Turn of the century detectives typically dispatched the bad guys with handcuffs or handguns – commonplace but effective best practices. In 1938 the aptly named Action Comics flipped that script with a new kind of crime fighter.
This depression era RoboCop didn’t just brush off bullets – he snatched up getaway cars with one arm while corralling bank robbers in the other. And he flew. Written by Jerry Siegel and illustrated by Joe Shuster, the mysterious crusader was a high profile hero with a low brow reputation – in spite of his Olympian physique and matinee idol looks Hollywood remained dubious until 1941 when Paramount rolled the dice with a series of animated shorts.
Produced by Max Fleischer’s studio and directed by his brother Dave, the cartoons were expressionist showcases featuring geometrically precise action sequences that felt retrograde and futuristic at the same time – wisely evoking Fritz Lang’s Metropolis rather than Shuster’s blandly conceived cityscapes.

Thanks to the Quentin Tarantino Archives I'm able to bring you a batch of 11 new pictures from Django Unchained with new looks at several members of the cast including Franco Nero who played the original Django in the 1966 Sergio Corbucci feature as well at Kerry Washington as Broomhilda von Shaft, Don Johnson as Spencer Gordon Bennet, Walton Goggins as Billy Crash and Samuel L. Jackson as Stephen, house slave to Leonardo DiCaprio's villainous Calvin Candie. It was also revealed, earlier today (via THR), that an eight-minute extended trailer for the film will play at the Lucca Movie event in Italy with talk still swirling that the film may premiere at the Rome Film Festival in November. Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, Django Unchained follows the recently freed slave Django (Jamie Foxx) who teams with the German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) to hunt down a trio...

On Saturday afternoon in Hall H at the San Diego Convention Center, Quentin Tarantino and the cast of the (admittedly, pretty terrific looking) "Django Unchained" presented an eight-minute sizzle reel of footage to a quite enthusiastic Comic-Con crowd. You know what? Let's just get to it: Here are the eight most badass things we saw at the "Django Unchained" Comic-Con panel.
Boy, that sizzle reel will awaken a very tired human being.
We'll get to the details of the sizzle real, but, as someone who has had very little sleep over the last fews day while covering Comic-Con, I left that panel with a burst of adrenaline. Good lord, whether you're a fan of Quentin Tarantino or not ... the man knows how to cut a sizzle reel.
Speaking of Quentin Tarantino ...
The man also knows how to play to the Comic-Con crowd; he's well aware that hese are his people.

While the "D" in "Django" may be silent, there was nothing but cheers at the Comic-Con Hall H panel for "Django Unchained" on Saturday. Quentin Tarantino's newest film follows bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) and freed slave Django (Jamie Foxx) as they track down plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). At the panel, fans were treated to en eight-minute sizzle reel of the film, along with plenty of laughs from Tarantino and the rest of the "Django" cast, including Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Walton Goggins, Don Johnson and Kerry Washington. Here are eight things that we learned at the "Django" panel: Quentin Tarantino is really happy he's finally getting to do a western. The director admitted that he'd been wanting to do a spaghetti western since he was 13 years old. But he also wanted to make sure that the western he did would be something different. "I...

This evening here in Cannes, the Weinstein Co. invited what must have been 30 or so journalists to screen extended trailers for Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master, David O. Russell's The Silver Linings Playbook and Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained. The trailers were screened in the order as listed above, which I would say was a calculated move getting us intrigued by The Master, softened by Silver Linings and going out with a bang with Django. Now let's dig a little deeper. The Master

Kurt Russell and Sacha Baron Cohen have dropped out of starring in Quentin Tarantino’s new movie “Django Unchained”.
Russell had the bigger part of the two, playing the role of ruthless henchman Ace Woody, a down right bastard who trains slaves to fight each other for the amusement of white men. The role would have been Russell’s first on screen since he appeared as ‘Stuntman Mike’ in Tarantino’s Grindhouse picture “Death Proof” five years ago. Russell actually replaced the originally cast Kevin Costner in the forthcoming western, who had scheduling issues with the Pa Kent role in “Man of Steel” and was probably uncertain of how his housewives favourite image might be effected in playing such a baddie.
As for why Russell dropped out? His camp ain’t saying. Variety broke the news last night.
Meanwhile Sacha Baron Cohen has also revealed that he won’t appear in the movie either.

In the final piece of the Django Unchained casting puzzle, Quentin Tarantino has secured Sacha Baron Cohen to play a small but significant role in his new black slavery/Spaghetti Western revenge film.
The versatile Brit is playing Scott Harmony, the as written overweight and shy 24 year old son of a rich daddy who buys him the slave Broomhilda in a bid to cure his confidence issues. Obviously Cohen is anything but overweight and he turned 40 this year so they’ll be a few tweaks from the screenplay and I’m sure the two eccentrics Cohen & Tarantino will have fun together crafting this character. His screen time will be minimal but as written it’s my favourite scene in the whole film (it revolves around a card game with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Calvin Candie) and Tarantino knows the part is a good one and has been searching for a memorable face to play it.

Django Unchained is written and directed by Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill) and stars Jamie Foxx (Ray) as Django, a slave turned bounty hunter searching for his wife Broomhilda, now played by Kerry Washington. Week after week, the casting of Quentin Tarantino's upcoming film Django Unchained is inching nearer to completion as we close in on its November production start date. Recently we learned that Kurt Russell would be replacing Kevin Costner in the role of Ace Woody, the right hand man of villain Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). Since then we've seen a few more smaller roles filled out by the likes of Don Johnson, M.C. Gainey and FX guru Tom Savini. Now this week yet another actor is reportedly in talks to join the film: Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Variety reports that he intends to take the part, but he has some scheduling issues to work out before he can fully commit. Word on the street is that the scheduling conflict has arisen from his press obligations for the bike messenger thriller Premium Rush, which hits theatres in January. However, just hours after this news story hit the web,...

The latest actor to flirt with Quentin Tarantino and his new anti-slavery 'Southern,' Django Unchained, is Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The actor reportedly wants to do the film, and is ready to take a role pending the resolution of some scheduling issues. One of those scheduling issues would have been press commitments for Premium Rush, but that movie was just pushed back to August, so that's one hurdle gone. Hit the break for some speculation on his role. Variety [1] gives up that info but doesn't have any details on what role he might play. There are a couple open roles at this point, but I hope Jgl ends up playing a young man named Scotty Harmony. The character is described as a meek little 'fatboy' in the script, but I think Levitt could do well by the character, even taking his physical difference into account. Scotty is the character to whom...

Miami Vice Catches Tarantino’s Django Unchained
It’s not exactly ‘Seven Degrees of Kevin Bacon’ but the latest addition to Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained does offer an interesting meeting between the big screen and small screen versions of Miami Vice as Don Johnson joins the Tarantino spin on the classic ‘spaghetti western.’

Don Johnson has been cast in Django Unchained. Don Johnson being cast in Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained (2012) illuminates another character in the western movie. Don Johnson will be playing “Spencer Bennett, a plantation owner who runs a string of ‘ponies’ — that is, pretty, young female slaves. It’s not a big role, but Johnson will get to factor in to one of the film’s early sequences as Django (Jamie Foxx) and dentist turned bounty hunter King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) begin their association.”

Writer-director Quentin Tarantino has been slowly putting together a solid cast for his upcoming "Southern" Django Unchained, which follows Jamie Foxx as a freed slave determined to rescue his wife from a sadistic slave owner (Leonardo DiCaprio). Tarantino recently added his Deathproof actor Kurt Russell to the cast as evil slave trainer Ace Woody, replacing Kevin Costner who recently dropped out, as well as Kill Bill, Vol. 2's Laura Cayouette as DiCaprio's widowed sister.
Deadline reports that the latest addition to the cast is Don Johnson, who will play a wealthy plantation owner named Spencer Bennett. Casting a veteran actor who hasn't been in many recent high-profile projects is typical of Tarantino, who rejuvenated the careers of actors like John Travolta (Pulp Fiction) and Robert Forster (Jackie Brown). Johnson recently appeared as the villainous Von Stillman in last year's Machete, directed by Tarantino's friend and frequent collaborator Robert Rodriguez.

After months of courting, Quentin Tarantino has finally roped Don Johnson for Django Unchained, the director's next romp in the genre sandbox.
The former star of TV's Miami Vice will join Tarantino's upcoming spaghetti western as wealthy, vile plantation owner Spencer Bennett, who may or may not force his female slaves into prostitution and his male slaves into Mandingo-style death matches as Leonardo DiCaprio's character does — but, if we're lucky, Johnson's Bennett will definitely bedeck himself in pastel leisure suits with rolled-up sleeves. (Editor's note: Young people, that's funny because those are the clothes that Johnson wore as Sonny Crockett on Miami Vice when you were just a toddler playing in your standard-issue sandbox.)
Boy, Johnson is making quite a name for himself these days playing hateful character roles. He was last seen on the big screen starring as a loathsome, racist sheriff in Machete, Robert Rodriguez's grindhouse homage.

Don Johnson has signed up for Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, but it took a hell of a lot of persuading. Tarantino has spent the past four months convincing Johnson to take on one of the script’s most controversial parts, and it seems he’s finally got his man. Despite the fact Johnson’s already played a racist in Robert Rodriguez’s Machete, Don considered Unchained’s Spencer Bennett even more irredeemable and was wary of taking on the role. Which is fair enough –...

Robert Rodriguez used 80s Miami Vice and Nash Bridges t.v. legend Don Johnson very much against type as racist son of a bitch in his Texas epic Machete and now Quentin Tarantino has the same idea for Django Unchained. Though this guy he’s set him to play sounds a thousand times worse and it took Johnson, despite seemingly being unpicky elsewhere (his recent film credits include an ‘uncredited’ appearance in When in Rome and a role in Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star!), four months of Tarantino calling him up to agree to take on the controversial part.

Deadline are reporting that Quentin Tarantino has apparently offered former Miami Vice and Nash Bridges star Don Johnson a part in his South-Western Django Unchained. Johnson would play a wealthy plantation owner named Spencer Bennett in the film alongside such acting luminaries as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Kurt Russell. Django Unchained follows:
…Django (Fox), a freed slave, who, under the protection and care of a German bounty hunter (Waltz) becomes a bad-ass bounty hunter himself, and after assisting Waltz in taking down some bad guys for profit, is helped by Waltz in tracking down his slave wife and liberating her from an evil plantation owner (DiCaprio).

Quentin Tarantino has cast yet another pop-culture icon of the ’70s and ’80s in what could be a career-reviving role: Miami Vice and Nash Bridges star Don Johnson has joined Tarantino’s slavery-era spaghetti Western Django Unchained as a villainous planation owner named Spencer Bennett, EW has confirmed. (Variety first reported the story.)
Along with rogues played by Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, and main baddie Leonardo DiCaprio, Bennett will face off against the eponymous slave-turned-bounty hunter (Jamie Foxx) and his German partner (Christoph Waltz) on Django’s quest to free his captive wife, a role not yet cast.

Quentin Tarantino continues to compile some of most underrated actors to date for Django Unchained. Not that Leonardo DiCaprio or Jamie Foxx is underrated. Now Deadline is reporting that Don Johnson is up for a role, but it his character will own a different kind of slave.
According to the report, Don Jonson will play as Spencer Bennett, a plantation owner who runs a string of ‘ponies’ – in laments terms young female slaves. Although Johnson’s role doesn’t weigh heavily on Django (Jamie Foxx) and King Schultz (Christoph Waltz), there is no doubt that they will cross paths.
One of the last major roles that have yet to be filled is that of Django’s wife, Broomhilda. Django Unchained should start shooting any minute now, with Samuel L Jackson, Dennis Christopher, Kurt Russell, Gerald McRaney, and M.C. Gainey in other roles. Django Unchained will release on Christmas Day, 2012.

Quentin Tarantino’s love for casting stars actors whose careers have turned a little lukewarm shows no sign of abating: he’s just hired Don Johnson to play a role in Django Unchained.Johnson will appear as Spencer Bennett, a wealthy plantation owner who oversees a group of “ponies”, a rather odious slang term for attractive black prostitutes. It is, therefore, a very villainous role, and according to Deadline, it took several weeks of persuasion for Tarantino to convince Johnson to take it. But even with the darker aspects, we’re a little surprised Johnson took much persuading, since his career has recently been in straight-to-video fodder, indie movies and some truly dreadful wide releases, including When in Rome and Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star. The dip was big enough that even Machete seemed like an improvement. In Django, the titular freed slave hero (Jamie Foxx) and bounty...

Director Quentin Tarantino has offered Don Johnson a role in his Spaghetti Southern Django Unchained, and they are currently in negotiations. The actor would take on the role of a character named Spencer Bennett, a wealthy plantation owner. Once everything is finalized Johnson will join the impressively awesome cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson and Kurt Russell.
The story follows the character Django (Fox), a freed slave, who, under the protection and care of a German bounty hunter (Waltz) becomes a badass bounty hunter himself, and after assisting Waltz in taking down some bad guys for profit, is helped by Waltz in tracking down his slave wife and liberating her from an evil plantation owner (DiCaprio). This film also deals with racism and is handled in a way unlike anything we've ever seen in a film before. According to someone that read the script,...

Briefly: It's a shame that Kevin Costner won't be in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained because of his commitment to The Hatfields and the McCoys, but Tarantino has lined up another well-known guy to take a role. Don Johnson will be in the movie, though he won't play the slave trainer role for which Costner was lined up. Instead, he'll play a totally different, but still nasty character. Johnson will appear in the movie as Spencer Bennett, a plantation owner who runs a string of 'ponies' -- that is, pretty, young female slaves. It's not a big role, but Johnson will get to factor in to one of the film's early sequences as Django (Jamie Foxx) and dentist turned bounty hunter King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) begin their association. Bennett is a pretty unsavory part, as are a great many roles in the movie, and Johnson is a good pick for it.

Django Unchained director Quentin Tarantino has offered the role of wealthy plantation owner Spencer Bennett to Don Johnson, and they are negotiating for Johnson to join a cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson and Kurt Russell. The picture shoots this fall with The Weinstein Company distributing domestically and Sony foreign. Tarantino is always good for a surprise or two when he goes beyond the obvious casting lists and taps talent from his memory banks, something he has done with the likes of John Travolta and the late David Carradine. Putting the former Miami Vice and Nash Bridges star into a villainous role here seems inspired. The liberated slave Django (Foxx) and his bounty hunter partner (Waltz) meet the evil plantation owner in pursuit of a bounty, and he turns the table on them. Tarantino has been talking to Johnson some time about the role.

Update: Deadline tells us more about Johnson‘s character. He’ll be playing “wealthy plantation owner Spencer Bennett,” who “oversees a stable of ‘ponies,’” or “a group of attractive young black slave prostitutes.”
In a strange bit of irony-tinged casting, ShowBlitz informs us of Don Johnson joining Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained. If you don’t realize just why this is ironic, remember that Django is led by Jaimie Foxx, who starred as Tubbs in Michael Mann‘s big-screen adaptation of Miami Vice. And Don Johnson was in… Miami Vice! He played Tubbs’ partner, Crockett, on the TV show! That’s mildly funny to me.
Anyway, ShowBlitz doesn’t note who he’s playing, yet the disproportionate amount of slave owners to slaves in the story leads me to the conclusion that he’s playing one of the former. The casting itself is hard to dispute, simply because nobody has...
