In real life, reporter Kathy Scruggs wrote the defamatory article that targeted Richard Jewell (and I believe obstructed justice in finding the real bomber) by leaking to the public that the FBI was investigating Richard Jewell as a person of interest in connection with the 1996 Centennial Olympic Park bombing; her article was published before Richard Jewell was informed of such investigation and the article set off a media-induced frenzy whereby news outlets essentially convicted Richard Jewell of the crime based on his character without a trial or being formally charged; Richard Jewell was ultimately proven to not be the bomber.
