Margot Robbie almost immediately achieved A-list status after being cast in Martin Scorsese’s Wolf of Wall Street. But after doing the Oscar-winning feature, she made sure her next film role couldn’t have been any more different.

Robbie hit a big breakthrough by portraying Naomi in Martin Scorsese’s Wolf of Wall Street. But with how memorable the part became, she was weary of being typecast for similar roles. One of the reasons she started her production company was to maintain variety in her career.
“When I was trying to make my name as an actress, creative roles for women were limited,” she once told Harper’s Bazaar. “I didn’t want to pick up another script where I was the wife or the girlfriend...

Margot Robbie has become one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood since her Wolf of Wall Street days. But there was one film she was seen as not big enough of a name to feature in.

Even Robbie underestimated how big of a star she’d become after starring in Martin Scorsese’s Wolf of Wall Street. At first, Robbie doubted she’d even end up in the movie.

With Evil Dead Rise now in theaters around the world, I had a chance to catch up with Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland, who told me all about their introductions to the original "Evil Dead" films and their on-set experience!
New Line Cinema and Renaissance Pictures present a return to the iconic horror franchise, “Evil Dead Rise,” from writer/director Lee Cronin (“The Hole in the Ground”). The movie stars Lily Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols (“Reminiscence”) and introducing Nell Fisher (“Northspur”).
Moving the action out of the woods and into the city, “Evil Dead Rise” tells a twisted tale of two estranged sisters, played by Sutherland and Sullivan, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

Matt Reeves may be planning his Batman film saga as a trilogy, but that doesn't mean we'll only be seeing his take on Gotham City inside those films. Spin-off films and TV series are in the works, which will highlight all the villains who make up Batman's rogues gallery; the Scarecrow, Clayface, and Professor Pyg have been mentioned as potential stars.
The spin-off furthest along in production stars Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin. Farrell had a supporting role in "The Batman," with Penguin (or "Oz" as he prefers) being the right-hand of crime lord Carmine Falcone (John Turturro). With his boss out of the picture, Oz is looking to become Gotham's new kingpin. The Penguin's club, the Iceberg Lounge, was also featured as a recurring setting in "The Batman," albeit reimagined from a high-class crib into an underground rave spot.

Chris Pine doesn’t have a to-do list, but that doesn’t mean his career choices aren’t intentional. Mostly, the actor and producer told IndieWire, he looks for projects with a single defining characteristic: They have to be great. Over the course of the past two decades, that’s led Pine to a variety of gigs, and the multi-hyphenate has managed to fit films like his current releases (adult-themed dramas “The Contractor” and “All the Old Knives”) alongside more mainstream stuff, like the upcoming “Dungeons & Dragons” feature and the “Wonder Woman” and “Star Trek” franchises.
As Pine readies to make the jump to directing, he’s hanging his career on something a bit more zen than you might expect from such a star. As he’ll explain, really, he’s just “following the giggle.”

For the first time in Oscar history, four women are running for governor of the music branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, Variety has learned.
Lesley Barber, Sharon Farber, Heather McIntosh and Taura Stinson are vying for the seat that will shortly be vacated by composer Michael Giacchino, who has been an Academy governor since 2015.
Laura Karpman became the first woman to serve as a music-branch governor in 2016, and she continues in that role. Charles Bernstein, who has served several terms as a music-branch governor, also continues to serve.
Canadian composer Barber is best known for her music for “Manchester by the Sea,” “Mansfield Park,” “You Can Count on Me” and “Late Night.” She recently collaborated with Mindy Kaling on the TV adaptation of “Four Weddings and a Funeral.”

A versatile filmmaker, who has moved from the world of celebrated Sundance moral dilemma indies like “Compliance” and “Z for Zachariah” into mainstream films, director Craig Zobel has shown an aptitude for shaping his filmmaking style towards the material. 2020‘s “The Hunt” was a big provocative satirical thriller, and it went for broke, but in his TV work, he really showed an affinity for balancing genre with the emotional human element.

Last summer, even before the public had gotten a chance to see it, humans-hunting-humans thriller “The Hunt” became a target for pundits on both sides of the gun control debate, when mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, prompted critics to consider the media’s role in glorifying violence. In response, Universal ripped director Craig Zobel’s movie from its Sept. 27 release date and rescheduled the thriller for spring 2020, making room for national mourning in the wake of the horrific events, only to turn around and use the controversy as an unconventional marketing hook.
While not nearly as incendiary as the early coverage made it out to be, “The Hunt” gives skeptics ample ammunition to condemn this twisted riff on “The Most Dangerous Game,” in which a posse of heavily armed liberal elites get carried away exercising their Second Amendment rights against a dozen “deplorables” — as the hunters label their prey,...

It’s a ripe premise for these unsettling times: A group of ordinary individuals find themselves in a twisted game of cat and mouse with life or death stakes in Damon Lindelof’s new social horror, “The Hunt.” The creator of “The Leftovers” has teamed up with powerhouse horror producer Jason Blum of Blumhouse to pen a chilling class warfare allegory that looks mighty real — and extremely bloody. Blumhouse offered a teaser last month to whet our appetites, and now the first official trailer offers a broader picture of the gruesome dangers to come. Most importantly, “Glow” star Betty Gilpin emerges as the film’s undisputed protagonist and murderous heroine, a good sign that “The Hunt” has its 2019 politics in the right place.
Here’s the official synopsis, which has not changed since the teaser trailer: “Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don’t know where they are,...

After keeping busy with the end of HBO’s “The Leftovers” and preparing for the release later this year of his “Watchmen” TV series, Damon Lindelof is making his return to movies with a social thriller with a killer twist. Lindelof has teamed up with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Studios for “The Hunt,” a social thriller about a high-end hunting trip with unusual targets: Humans. A newly released first trailer plays like a commercial for the psychotic luxury trip, with very little hint at the more sinister elements of the story.
Per the official synopsis: “Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don’t know where they are, or how they got there. In the shadow of a dark internet conspiracy theory, a group of globalist elites gathers for the very first time at a remote Manor House to hunt humans for sport. But the elites’ master plan is...

It’s been a difficult year for conversations about women in the film industry, with revelations about sexual assault changing conversations about the nature of the entertainment world that should’ve been resolved long ago. Fortunately, no matter the challenges facing the business of making movies, women get the last laugh in front of the camera. This has been a rousing year for female leads, and not only because we’re finally seeing a plethora of strong women characters dominating some of the best movies of the year. Setting aside that obvious need, some of the best performances of the year were simply memorable characters that looked and sounded like nothing we’ve seen before. Here are some of the biggest highlights.

Every Oscar season needs at least one unpredictable dark horse, and this year “I, Tonya” fits the bill. The movie has earned rave reviews since premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, and while the Best Actress race is more jam-packed than usual, you can’t count out Margot Robbie’s career-best work just yet.

“I, Tonya” retells the true story of disgraced ice skater Tonya Harding and her ex-spouse Jeff Gilooly, who infamously hired a man to break the legs of Harding’s biggest competitor, Nancy Kerrigan, at the 1994 National Figure Skating Championship. The act killed Harding’s future in ice skating. Sebastian Stan stars as Gilooly, while Allison Janney plays Harding’s overbearing and cruel mother.

“I, Tonya” will make you care about Tonya Harding for the first time in a long time. Moreover, “I, Tonya” will make you sympathize with Tonya Harding for the first time. Remembered for her highly contested role in attacking rival figure skater Nancy Kerrigan (when she’s remembered at all), Harding was one of the greatest villains the ’90s ever produced, up there with O.J. Simpson, the T-1000, and the guy who invented Crystal Pepsi. She was the perfect punchline for a country that always needs someone to laugh at; a country that hinges on the idea of upward mobility but would rather punch down than pull up. Now, thanks to the bitter and bleakly funny black comedy that “Lars and the Real Girl” director Craig Gillespie has made about the most sordid years of her life, Tonya Harding is finally getting a chance to tell her side of the story.

The end is finally upon us. “The Leftovers” airs its final episode this Sunday on HBO, and with it comes the close of one of television’s all-time great drama series. Over the course of its three-season run, “The Leftovers” has earned acclaim for Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta, as well as the ensemble cast, but it would be a shame to say goodbye to this series without spotlighting the men and women behind the camera.
“The Leftovers” and its point-of-view storytelling always allowed different directors to leave their mark on the series. Through memorable sequences and shots, these seven directors made “The Leftovers” an emotionally visceral and downright spiritual experience. It’s safe to say there won’t be another series like it for some time, but television is in good hands as long as these filmmakers are guiding it.

There’s no question that hordes of people will swarm to theaters to see “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” on opening weekend, and most of them will get their money’s worth — it’s yet another visually dazzling comic space opera about intergalactic heroes trading banter in their meandering quest to save the universe. Writer-director James Gunn was already onboard to direct a third entry before this one hit theaters, a signal that this vibrant formula works really well for a lot of people. Unfortunately, the enthusiasm for a big, flashy blockbuster like “Guardians” has the power to overwhelm everything else out there, and drown out memories of other first-rate science fiction storytelling from recent years that still deserves a larger audience. Here are a few of them worth checking out this weekend. Trust us — “Guardians” will be there next weekend, too.

There are many movies about horror in the woods, but “It Comes at Night” stretches that trope into a paranoid headtrip. Writer-director Trey Shults’ sophomore effort follows up on the promise of his tense family drama “Krisha” with another expertly-told look at family bonds jeopardized within the claustrophobic boundaries of a creepy home. This time, however, the stakes have gone beyond the challenges of addiction and estrangement to involve matters of life and death.
Once again, Shults has delivered a top-notch psychological thriller, but “It Comes at Night” builds an unnerving atmosphere around unspecified sci-fi circumstances. Its central premise involves the struggles of a family unit in the aftermath of a plague that seems to have wiped out much of civilization. That much may sound familiar, but it’s only a starting point for more unpredictable turns.

We all remember Tobey Maguire from years ago warming our hearts as Peter Parker in Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2. Then breaking our hearts with Spider-Man 3. Well, now Maguire has made a career recently producing films and not web-slinging. He's produced The Fifth Wave, Z for Zachariah, and Rock of Ages. Also recently he can be heard in the film Boss Baby, but now he's preparing to direct his first feature film based on Jo Nesbo's novel, Blood on Snow.
Blood on the Snow is about a fixer named Olav who works for an Oslo crime boss. Then he falls in love... with the Boss's wife.... who he's been hired to kill. Here's the full synopsis:
From the internationally acclaimed author of the Harry Hole novels—a fast, tight, darkly lyrical stand-alone novel that has at its center the perfectly sympathetic antihero: an Oslo contract killer who draws us into...

"Thank you for what you did. Not a lot of people would do that nowadays..." Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for a post-apocalyptic survival thriller titled Here Alone, which is pretty much just another zombie horror survival movie continuing the zombie trend. This one stars Lucy Walters as a woman surviving on her own, who encounters two other survivors that mess things up. Yes, this sounds way too similar to Z for Zachariah, which is probably why this hasn't picked up any extra buzz over the last year. The full cast includes Gina Piersanti, Adam David Thompson and Shane West. We initially posted a teaser trailer for this film last year, but then we forgot all about it until now. Still only looks okay. Fire it up. Here's the newest official trailer (+ poster) for Rod Blackhurst's Here Alone, direct from YouTube: After a terrible virus ravages human civilization,...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question:
Last Friday saw the release of Garth Davis’ “Lion,” the musical score for which is the gorgeous result of a collaboration between two giants of the neo-classical movement, Dustin O’Halloran and Hauschka. It’s just the latest indication that we’re living in a fascinating, vibrant time for movie music, and December boasts a number of films that will only add more fuel to that fire. With that in mind, we asked our panel of critics to name their favorite film score of the 21st Century.

Shot in NYC exactly one year to date, for his directorial debut, actor, playwright and now filmmaker Brian Shoaf landed Zachary Quinto, Jenny Slate and Jon Hamm while teaming with Sundance behind the scene technicians in cinematographer Eric Lin (I Smile Back, Equity) and Heather McIntosh (Z for Zachariah) for a drama that’ll likely be compared to Lars and the Real Girl or The Beaver for it’s more subversive make-believe elements.

Margot Robbie continues to strike while the iron is hot – adding to her growing collection of collaborations with Warner Bros, which includes a highly anticipated Harley Quinn movie. These projects are made possible through her newly minted production company, LuckyChap, and it is this organisation that will deliver an adaptation of the as-yet unpublished novel by Gin Phillips, Beautiful Things.
The novel itself does not hit bookstores until May 2017, but the excitement around it is such that Warner Bros quickly acquired the rights to turn it into a big screen feature film. With LuckyChap having a first-look deal with the studio – courtesy of Margot Robbie’s recent success – it is Beautiful Things that has caught the eye of the fledgling producer and her colleagues.

Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party is one of 2016’s finest releases, and that you probably missed it completely during a short run earlier this year shouldn’t point towards anything about the work itself. Its day-in-the-life coming-of-age film mold strikes familiar notes; more surprising is how it captures an almost-overwhelming number of issues (e.g. religious and sexual identity, suburban life, infidelity, jealousy, and group dynamics) with the ear of a skilled novelist and the eye of an accomplished formalist. It goes without saying that a) you should watch Henry Gamble, and b) the writer-director, Stephen Cone (also of Black Box and The Wise Kids), is one to watch. With that in mind, we’re very happy to unveil first details of his next project, Princess Cyd, which will begin production this week.

Thanks in part to a couple of “Star Trek” movies, Chris Pine is now one of the most recognizable faces at the movies. His mixture of old-school swagger and disarming charm helped introduce a new generation to Captain James T. Kirk, while keeping diehard fans at bay, and that appeal shows no sign of letting up: The latest “Star Trek” film has grossed close to $200 million worldwide this summer and it’s still going.
But while some stars anchoring franchises may stick close to the blockbuster routine, over the past year, that hasn’t been Pine’s only mode — or even the one that interests him the most these days. In last year’s minimalist post-apocalyptic drama “Z for Zachariah,” Craig Zobel directed Pine as one-third of a tense love triangle featuring three survivors on a farm who comprised the entire cast of the movie.

"You have a very nice setup here... A tent, food - from what I can tell, a car. Most people would kill for this stuff..." This new post-apocalyptic thriller just won the Audience Award at the Tribeca Film Festival that took place in NYC this month. It's called Here Alone and is yet another zombie post-apocalyptic survival movie (there have been quite a few recently), this one also involves a plot similar to Z for Zachariah where a young woman surviving on her own encounters two other survivors. As expected, this causes problems. The cast includes Lucy Walters, Gina Piersanti, Adam David Thompson and Shane West. I'm certainly intrigued, especially knowing that Tribeca audiences loved the film, but I still want to see more footage first. Chiwetel Ejifor is a very talented actor that we rarely see in big budget films. Compared to others in his field, he mainly keeps a low profile, sticking to films that are a part of the real world, films that aren't to crazy or out there. He was in a film about a nuclear apocalypse where everyone was dead, then a film where his a criminal, and also a film where he had to help save a man stuck on Mars. But he hasn't been in a movie like Doctor Strange, a film which will possibly turn the comic book movie genre over on its head.
Chiwetel Ejiofor was in an interview with Collider and talked about a number of films he has and is currently working on, such as Triple 9, Z For Zachariah, and Doctor Strange. So when talking about the upcoming comic book film, Ejiofor explained just...

"Would you be able to spare some of your crop?" Bull Dog Distribution has released a new UK trailer for the post-apocalyptic thriller The Survivalist, from writer/director Stephen Fingleton. Martin McCann stars as the Survivalist, a man living in the forest after an apocalyptic disaster has left most of the world in desperate search for food. Similar to the low key post-apoc thriller Z for Zachariah (which I recommend seeing - rent it on iTunes), out of nowhere two people (two women) show up at his place. This almost seems like the opposite of Z for Zachariah, which is about a woman survivalist found by two men. I'm intrigued. Here's the first full UK trailer for Stephen Fingleton's The Survivalist, found via The Film Stage: In a time of starvation, a survivalist lives off a small plot of land hidden deep in forest. When two women seeking food and shelter discover his farm,...

Hollywood has been flush with post-apocalyptic stories, but only recently have the stories started focusing on smaller units. Following in the footsteps of last year’s Z For Zachariah, Stephen Fingleton‘s The Survivalist centers on a trio of people struggling to survive in the wake of a famine. Unlike the picture-perfect leads of Z For Zachariah, these characters have all been pushed through the emotional grinder. They’re gaunt, paranoid, and only a step above feral.
Martin McCan is the titular survivalist, a tribal lone wolf whose face is evidence of years of a hardscrabble life. When an elderly woman and her teenage relative come knocking on his door, he reluctantly allows them to stay. But as the trailer shows, he may have been better off remaining a loner. Also starring Mia Goth, Andrew Simpson, Olwen Fouere, and Douglas Russel, watch the trailer below, and read our review here.

This is definitely the time of year when film critic types (I’m sure you know who I mean) spend an inordinate amount of time leading up to awards season—and it all leads up to awards season, don’t it?—compiling lists and trying to convince anyone who will listen that it was a shitty year at the movies for anyone who liked something other than what they saw and liked. And ‘tis the season, or at least ‘thas (?) been in the recent past, for that most beloved of academic parlor games, bemoaning the death of cinema, which, if the sackcloth-and-ashes-clad among us are to be believed, is an increasingly detached and irrelevant art form in the process of being smothered under the wet, steaming blanket of American blockbuster-it is. And it’s going all malnourished from the siphoning off of all the talent back to TV, which, as everyone knows,...

We all have our favorite movie sex scenes, from the erotic to the hilarious, and as actors are usually rather big film fans, they.re not above having their own. Margot Robbie, star of DC.s upcoming super villain team up Suicide Squad, has a particular favorite, which she just revealed. The star of movies like The Wolf of Wall Street, Z for Zachariah, and Focus is one of the actors featured in W Magazine.s February 2016 issue, and when asked, she revealed her favorite sex scene goes down in True Romance. The 1993 Tony Scott-directed, Quentin Tarantino-penned crime drama is more known for sharp wit and violence than eroticism, but there is a memorable sexual encounter, and it involves a phone booth. The scene in question takes place shortly after the quickie nuptials between Clarence Worley (Christian Slater) and Alabama Whitman (Patricia Arquette). From the aforementioned phone booth,...

The last few days of 2015 are spent in reflection about the year that's just wrapping up and in anticipation of the year just ahead, at least for me, and since we had our ten best list last week, this week it's time for the runners-up, the fifteen films that also filled out our year. As always, I look at this list and I think it would make a perfectly spiffy top ten if that's how things had shaken out, which is to say that the only real purpose of any of these lists is to remind you of more of the experiences that were worth having in a theater. There are plenty of good films that aren't on either of my lists this year. That doesn't mean I didn't like them or they're not good. It just means that these films meant more to me for some reason. For now,...

Remember in 2011 when Jessica Chastain went from unknown actress to Oscar nominee in the blink of an eye thanks to the whirlwind of release dates that had her starring in over six films in that calendar year? It was as great a calling card as you could ask for and while Chastain had a relatively subdued year (Crimson Peak, The Martian), other actors gave her a run for her money in the “how many projects can I appear on in one year” race. Not that it’s a contest, but we’re fan of lists here at Tfe even as we understand they’re more jumping off discussion points rather than monolithic assertions of quality or taste. And so find below a list of 15 actors who were extra hardworking and who you couldn’t have missed seeing as they were everywhere from superhero...
