Alec Baldwin just sort of happened all at once. For a long time, there were movies without Baldwin, and then suddenly, in 1988, there were five. He was an unfaithful slime of a husband in Jonathan Demme's "Married to the Mob," an unfaithful slime of a boyfriend in Mike Nichols "Working Girl," a creepy slime of a best friend in John Hughes' "She's Having a Baby," an ambitious slime of a radio executive in Oliver Stone's "Talk Radio" and an absolute gem of a dead man in Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice."
Baldwin was immediately pegged as a character actor with leading man potential, and got his chance to prove his worth in 1990 as Jack Ryan in John McTiernan's adaptation of Tom Clancy's "The Hunt for Red October." Ryan is a brilliant CIA analyst who correctly deduces that legendary Soviet submarine captain Marko Ramius (Sean Connery) has absconded...

Few works of pop culture have a higher barrier to entry than “On Cinema at the Cinema,” but even fewer are as rewarding to new viewers willing to invest countless hours of their lives. Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington’s longtime Adult Swim series is ostensibly a parody of syndicated movie review shows like “Siskel & Ebert & the Movies,” with the entirety of each episode taking place on a chintzy talk show set. But over the course of 12 seasons and countless spinoffs, it has evolved into something much, much weirder.
Each episode features Heidecker and Turkington hosting their own public access show about movies, with the two men reviewing films they clearly haven’t seen (a running gag is that every single film receives a perfect “five bags of popcorn” rating). But the real action begins when the reviews end, as they frequently devote a majority of their airtime...

Like Billy Idol in “Rebel Yell,” Sam Morrow cries for “more, more, more” in his hard-hitting new song “More.”
A slice of bluesy classic rock that Morrow and his band cut live on the floor at Kingsize Soundlabs in East L.A., “More” finds the Houston native ruminating on the difference between what we want in life and what we need. “Walk in, walk out, baby walk on,” he sings in the first verse, delivering the line with hints of Davis Essex’s Seventies smash “Rock On.”

Miki Rai wants people to know what it’s like to be in her shoes.
Or, rather, in her scrubs.
Rai is one of a growing number of healthcare professionals on YouTube and TikTok who share looks at their everyday lives. But while that sprang up as a growing trend during the pandemic, Rai has been making educational content about her job for years. She started on Instagram (where she currently has 625,000 followers), then expanded to YouTube because posting photos with captions wasn’t enough room to capture the day-in-the-life feel she wanted.
“There is a lot of misinformation as well as mystery about what healthcare providers do for a living, and I didn’t see content that reflected an accurate depiction...

Tulapop Saenjaroen's Squish! is showing exclusively on Mubi starting August 8, 2022, in the series Brief Encounters.Abstract Notes On Squish!1.I had a chance to read The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath many years ago. As I remember, I was immensely touched by it emotionally. Though I cannot recall the details and plot so well, there is one monologue that is still stuck in my mind ’til this day. Plath writes, "The only reason I remembered this play was because it had a mad person in it, and everything I had ever read about mad people stuck in my mind, while everything else flew out."Everything else is missing but the subject. The initial idea of Squish! is derived from my personal urge to question how depression is usually represented on screen and how it could possibly be done otherwise. It is often ironic when contemporary representations utilize depression as a “subject” while,...

The 2022 Golden Trailer Awards are led by Coda with 14 nominations — the most of any film — followed by The Matrix Resurrections, which starred Keanu Reeves, with 10.
Coda and Apple TV+ made history when the film captured best picture at the Academy Awards, a first for a streaming service after years of Netflix and other competitors long campaigned for such an honor.
Other multiple nominees include Top Gun: Maverick with five nominations; Dune with four; and Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and The Batman among the movies with three mentions.
The Golden Trailer Awards, which honor creatives who produce trailers and marketing content for new movies, TV and streaming series, will be held live in Los Angeles on Oct. 6 and will be hosted by comedian Henry Cho.

Romanian animator Anca Damian’s psychedelic, musical take on the Robinson Crusoe’s story, “The Island,” will be accompanied by an Ar exhibition inviting the audience to further explore its colorful universe, Variety has learned. A board-game based on her seventh feature has also been developed, mirroring its protagonists’ search for paradise in the film.
Set to bow at Rotterdam Film Festival, “The Island” was produced by Aparte Film, with Best Friend Forever handling international sales.
Despite referencing his most famous creation, Damian doesn’t care for Daniel Defoe’s 1719 novel, she says. “It was written a long time ago and it has no meaning now. It’s awful. The way Robinson Crusoe thinks that he is saving the so-called ‘savage’… The whole thing is unacceptable.”

Showcasing 11 horror comics from different artists with an emphasis on emotive textures and palpable palettes, the new horror comics anthology Shades of Fear is now on Kickstarter ahead of its September 2022 release, and we have a look at the amazing cover art by Maya McKibbin and release details for the ambitious anthology.
Here's what Shades of Fear contributor Jade Zhang had to say about her story, "How to Survive a Haunting":
"My vision for “How to Survive a Haunting” is to make it a bit of a love tribute to the classic tropes of horror. A decadent and macabre old house, a creepy baby, and a healthy smattering of body horror. I drew inspiration from Junji Ito’s "Glyceride," and the feelings of pure revulsion I'd get from that short. The haunted house is cruel and monstrous, it feeds off of the flesh and fear of the people living in it.

Around the time she was in the seventh grade, South African actor Thando Thabethe auditioned for the lead role in a school play. It didn’t pan out the way she’d planned — she landed a small part in the choir, “sort of singing ‘Kumbaya’ and not really doing much,” she recalls, with a laugh — but a spark was lit. “Even just being part of something that small at such a young age is what shaped me, knowing that this is something that I want to do for the rest of my life.”
That life-long dream now has Thabethe poised for breakout success. First comes a star turn as Constable Nandi Cele in the crime drama “Reyka,” an eight-part series produced by Serena Cullen Prods. and Quizzical Pictures for the South African pay-tv channel M-Net that Fremantle is distributing globally. That will be followed by a lead role in “Blood Psalms,...

There’s no better way to celebrate the spooky season than with Elvira, the queen of Halloween. The “Mistress of the Dark” is hosting a one-night, four-film marathon on Shudder as part of Elvira’s 40th Anniversary, Very Scary Very Special Special on Shudder. The evening will see the ever-so-lively Cassandra Peterson come full-circle, as she revisits a similar format to that of her beloved late-night television series, Elvira’s Movie Macabre. The show premiered in 1981 out of the CBS affiliate in Los Angeles, bringing “B” horror and science fiction to the forefront. Over the years, Peterson became a pop culture icon with appearances on various TV shows, spinoffs, and merchandise licensing bonanza. In 1988, she starred in her own movie, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, which is part of the streamer’s lineup. Rounding out this frightful good time will be old school classics House on Haunted Hill, The City of the Dead,...

Female directors hit another milestone tonight when The Crown‘s Jessica Hobbs won Outstanding Directing For a Drama Series and Hacks‘ Lucia Aniello Won Outstanding Directing For a Comedy Series, respectively. This marks the first time women have swept both directing categories in the same year.
Hobbs being recognized for directing the Season 4 finale of Netflix’s The Crown, marks only the fourth time in 67 years that the Emmy Award in the Outstanding Directing For a Drama Series category has been won by a woman.
The rarity of the occasion was not lost on Hobbs, who also was nominated in the category for The Crown last year

Holiday movies are great business, consistently bringing in female audiences and delivering big ratings to establish themselves one of the most lucrative programming genres. But along with their success, the holiday movies also have carried stigma over formulaic plots and characters and are not typically considered awards material.
Netflix’s Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square broke through that stigma to win the Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie at the Creative Arts ceremony Sunday.
Netflix pulled out the stops for Christmas on the Square, creating a winter wonderland at the Grove in August to promote the movie, which was also nominated — and won — for choreography. It worked as Christmas on the Square became only the second holiday movie after the 1977 The Gathering, starring Ed Asner and Maureen Stapleton, to win the Emmy for Outstanding TV Movie.

Director Erik Matti takes a closer look at the gritty reality of the Philippines in “On the Job: The Missing 8.” Inspired by true events and presented in Venice’s main competition, it shows a corrupt journalist seeking justice for his missing colleagues, as well as crime syndicates that temporarily release prison inmates to carry out political assassinations.
Originally intended for the big screen, this film and Matti’s 2013 thriller “On the Job” – shown at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight – have been reworked as a six-part HBO Asia Original series, which bows on Sept. 12 on HBO Go in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

The technical categories at the VMAs are often some of the most interesting and hardest to predict. Unlike the main categories, these are not voted on by the general public, but by special juries of music insiders. Let’s take a look at which videos could grab one or two Moon Persons on September 12.
SEEWho’s hosting the 2021 VMAs? Doja Cat gets the coveted gig Best Art Direction
This category seems to favor visually busy music videos with a lot going on. So I would say that, unless Lil Nas X sweeps all his technical nominations for “Montero (Call Me by Your Name),” “911” by Lady Gaga or “Best Friend” by Saweetie and Doja Cat seem to more closely resemble past winners. I will give “Best Friend” the edge just based on how creative that video is, but any of the three mentioned shouldn’t come as a surprise.

When you think of the current horror movie genre—which has had a pretty decent run over the last decade—certain creative names and properties come immediately to mind. In the case of three of the genre’s most successful franchises, Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring, that name belongs chiefly to director, producer, and co-writer James Wan. The Malignant filmmaker was the guiding force behind the genesis of all three film sagas, and he remains one of the most well-regarded filmmakers in horror cinema.
Wan has expanded his portfolio in recent years, directing Fast and Furious entry Furious 7 and diving headfirst into the DC universe with both Aquaman and its currently-filming sequel. But somehow between his two adventures with the King of Atlantis, Wan has managed to make a new horror thriller that both brings him back to his roots and points the way for his future in the genre: Malignant.
