Ethan Hawke is a four-time Oscar nominee for “Training Day”, “Before Sunset”, “Before Midnight” and “Boyhood”, but he’s never been recognized at the Emmy Awards. Until now?
Not only does Hawke play famed abolitionist John Brown on Showtime’s “The Good Lord Bird,” but he’s also on the Emmy ballot for writing and producing the limited series. That means he could get a whopping three Emmy noms for this project alone. Hawke was recently nominated as a lead actor at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, losing to Mark Ruffalo (“I Know This Much Is True”) both times. The good news for Hawke? Ruffalo is not eligible at this year’s Emmys since he claimed last year’s prize.

With Emmy nominations just days away, Gold Derby’s 31 Experts are furiously updating their predictions. “The Amazing Race” holds the Emmy record for the most wins in Best Competition Program (formerly known as Reality-Competition Program), taking home a whopping 10 trophies through the years. Since CBS’s popular reality TV show didn’t air within the Emmy eligibility period, it won’t have a chance to increase its numbers quite yet. Just how massive is that “Amazing Race” record? Current odds front-runner “RuPaul’s Drag Race” is Emmy’s reigning two-time champion (2018-19), so it still needs to win eight more times to catch up with it.

“Saturday Night Live” Season 45 may have been forced to shut down early due to the coronavirus pandemic, but that won’t stop Kate McKinnon from taking home her third career Emmy Award. Four of Gold Derby’s 31 Experts predict McKinnon will win Best Comedy Supporting Actress at the 2020 Emmys: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Lynette Rice (Ent. Weekly), Jazz Tangcay (Variety) and Ken Tucker (Yahoo). That’s good enough for second place on our odds chart, behind only Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), someone who’s also looking to add a third trophy in this category.

After two failed nominations in 2014 and 2015, McKinnon claimed Emmy gold the following two years thanks in part to “SNL’s” skewering of the 2016 presidential election between Donald Trump (Alec Baldwin) and Hillary Clinton (McKinnon). She portrayed an endless array of topical political figures those years, including Jeff Sessions,...

The Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress race is shaping up to be a nail-biter: Cate Blanchett (“Mrs. America”) and Regina King (“Watchmen”) are neck and neck in our odds — and each has 13 Experts backing them.
With 7/2 odds, Blanchett is slightly out in front to 37/10 for King. The former also has nine Editors and 14 of our top 24 users in her corner, while King has two and eight, respectively.
The only other contenders with No. 1 picks from Experts are Merritt Wever (“Unbelievable”), who has three and is in third place, and Shira Haas (“Unorthodox”), who has one (Rotten Tomatoes’ Debbie Day) and is in seventh place.
But this race has long been perceived to be between these two Oscar winners. King was out of the gate first with “Watchmen” having premiered on HBO in October, and she even won Best Drama Actress for her turn as Angela Abar/vigilante Sister Night...

Voting for the 2020 Emmy nominations ended on Monday, with 25,000 members of the Television Academy marking their ballots in dozens of categories. While the noms won’t be announced until July 28, our 31 Experts from major media outlets have already chimed in with their winner predictions. For Best Drama Series, they are split between no less than five shows: 26 predict a victory for HBO’s “Succession,” two choose Netflix’s “Ozark” and one apiece opt for Netflix’s “The Crown,” AMC’s “Better Call Saul” and FX’s “Pose.” Do You agree or disagree with our Experts’ Emmy predictions?

Netflix’s “Sex Education” was overlooked by the Emmys in 2019 for its first season, but the British dramedy about teenagers dealing with families, relationships and their overwhelming adolescent hormones was entered for consideration as a drama. In 2020 the show is back in contention, but this time in comedy categories, which could pay off for the whole show, but especially for Gillian Anderson.
Anderson is a contender for Best Comedy Supporting Actress for her performance as Jean Milburn, a sex therapist whose line of work and matter-of-fact sharing of her expertise often makes her relationship with her teenage son (Asa Butterfield) especially awkward. Among the show’s large ensemble cast, she’s the most familiar to Emmy voters. She earned four Best Drama Actress noms for “The X-Files,” winning in 1997, and then she contended for Best Movie/Limited Actress for the Charles Dickens adaptation “Bleak House” in 2006.

Even though Judith Light has been working in television for decades, she has yet to win a Primetime Emmy despite four career nominations: “Ugly Betty” (2007), “Transparent” (2016 & 2017) and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” (2018). The actress does, however, have two Daytime Emmys on her mantel for “One Life to Live” (1980 & 1981). Light is back in the awards discussion this year thanks to her role as New York State Senator Dede Standish on Netflix’s “The Politician,” and now one of our 29 Emmy Experts — Lynette Rice (Ent. Weekly) — predicts she’ll finally win.

Last year the TV academy forced FX’s “American Horror Story” to submit in the drama categories for the first time, since the “Apocalypse” season contained continuing storylines and characters from both “Murder House” and “Coven.” Because of the switcheroo, “Ahs” scream queen Jessica Lange was able to nab an Emmy nomination in Best Drama Guest Actress — a category she wouldn’t have been eligible for had the show stayed as a limited series. (Lange lost to Cherry Jones for “The Handmaid’s Tale.”) At this year’s Emmys, the exact same thing could happen to Andrew Scott for his one-and-done role on Netflix’s “Black Mirror.”

Not many people correctly predicted Luke Kirby‘s come-from-behind Emmy victory last year for Best Comedy Guest Actor. In fact, this “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” scene-stealer was in fourth place on our 2019 odds chart, behind Peter MacNicol (“Veep”), John Mulaney (“Saturday Night Live”) and Adam Sandler (“Saturday Night Live”). This year our Emmy Experts don’t plan on making the same mistake again — he’s in the runner-up position to win his second Emmy Award for the Amazon comedy. Of course, the odds-on front-runner is still Eddie Murphy (“Saturday Night Live”).
