Phil Elverum was feeling blocked. Not in any dire way — just in the way artists sometimes get when things are particularly busy. There was Covid to contend with, as well as the house he’d been building in bucolic Anacortes, Washington. Plus, he’s a single parent, a full-time job. The well hadn’t dried up, but it definitely needed a little rainwater to top it off.

The Amazon Prime Video series “The Summer I Turned Pretty” has made a splash with its loaded soundtrack. By now it is safe to say that “The Summer I Turned Pretty” and Taylor Swift go hand in hand because author and show creator Jenny Han has made it so.
The first season had five Swift songs ranging from her “Lover” album to “Fearless (Taylor’s Version),” and the Season 1 trailer debuted “This Love (Taylor’s Version)” from the yet-to-be-released re-recorded “1989.” Season 2’s teaser was set to “August,” and then the official trailer debuted “Back to December (Taylor’s Version)” shortly before “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” was released July 7. Only time will tell if Season 2 ties Season 1 for how many Taylor Swift songs it contains.
The sequel season’s summer-y soundtrack also contains hits from repeat artists Olivia Rodrigo, Tyler the Creator, Caroline Polachek and more. A Fleetwood Mac ballad punctuates a particularly emotional scene,...

Over the course of three albums, Rayland Baxter has sketched his own picture of lush Americana and oddball folk, singing songs about fishhooks and females along the way. With his latest release, Wide Awake, he presents his own version of classic pop-rock. It’s a sound that’s rich in tone, texture and the unique songwriting of a Nashville native who grew up watching his father, pedal steel legend Bucky Baxter, playing with some of the late 20th century’s most iconic frontmen.

Rayland Baxter was ready to get away from the world in the autumn of 2016. In this, the Nashville singer-songwriter was hardly unique, but in the three months that he spent living in an old rubber factory in rural Kentucky, with little more than a mattress, a guitar, and a Wurlitzer, Baxter did something with his political angst: he wrote an album.
“I knew I had a bunch of song ideas that I wanted to start getting going on, and I knew I wanted to go out to some place in the woods.

At long last, Dr. Dog's first album, Psychedelic Swamp, is set to see the light of day. After 15 years of watching bootlegs circulate on the internet, the Philly outfit have retooled their experimental cassette-only debut as a fully imagined studio album, comprised of the '60s-inspired psych-pop that made 2005's Easy Beat and 2007's We All Belong indie favorites. With original members of the collective in tow, the band returned to their Mt. Slippery studio for the project and, in a fit of energy, also recorded the new song "Bring My Baby Back," premiering here today. The band's description of "Bring My Baby Back" is pretty great. "This song is filled with things that nobody knew what to do with but just didn’t have the heart to throw away," says Toby Leaman, the band's bassist and co–lead singer. "It's like climbing out from the bottom of a junk drawer three stories deep,...

The Flaming Lips and some "fwends" have taken on the songs of The Beatles' "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band," and first up is an iconic little song with Miley Cyrus and Moby. Click here to listen to Miley Cyrus, Moby and Flaming Lips cover "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." Cyrus obviously bends her voice to fit the psychedelic trip on this one; but a trained singer singing purposely flat hurts my widdle hawt. It's nice to hear her step outside her wheelhouse, and, judging from the little blips of in-studio banter inserted at the beginning and end, she had at least a little fun. As you'll see the song is conveniently located on the pre-order page for the set, officially dubbed "With a Little Help From My Fwends," a title you will be embarrassed to say aloud, guaranteed. The Oklahoma-founded group has gone the way of PledgeMusic for this release,...

Philadelphia’s Dr. Dog will be back with a follow-up to 2012’s Be the Void on Oct. 1 via Anti- Records. The band will release its eighth studio album, B-Room, which “in its purest form, is a soul album.” Starting from scratch in almost every aspect, the group started the process by leaving their home recording base of “Meth Beach” after their lease was up, and constructing a brand new self-built studio inside a now-defunct silversmith mill. “The whole process of recording really started with building the studio,” said bassist-vocalist Toby Leaman in a statement. The Last Waltz is arguably the greatest concert film of all time.
Shot by Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese, the film documents the last concert performed by The Band as its original quintet in 1976 at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom.
Almost 36 years to the day after Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan and poets Michael McClure and Lawrence Ferlinghetti all joined Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm and Company for that legendary show, an all-star lineup will converge on The Warfield on November 24 to reenact that fateful evening.

Happythankyoumoreplease is the winsome directorial debut of Josh Radnor, who also wrote and starred in this ensemble comedy that drew resounding praise at 2010′s Sundance Film Festival, taking home an Audience Award. I recently had the chance to see this feature that proudly wears its heart on its sleeve, and instantly took to the film’s warm demeanor, vibrant characters and irresistible soundtrack. (Read my full review here.)
Shortly after Happythankyoumoreplease hit theaters, I had the chance to speak with Radnor, who proved to be as affable and loquacious as the character he plays on How I Met Your Mother. What began as an interview about his filmmaking process soon gave way to an intense conversation, in which we discussed the current trend toward cinematic cynicism and the state of film criticism. With so much to report, I’ve opted to break our interview into two parts.

For many, the Dave Matthews Band is summer. So, after a 20-year kinship with the band on the road, what exactly would a Dmb-less summer look like for devoted fans? Lucky for "Dave heads," they'll no longer have to ponder that prospect.
In 2010 the band announced they would be taking a hiatus from touring in 2011, but in the months that followed, an announcement was made that the multifaceted group — which includes Dave Matthews, Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard and Boyd Tinsley, as well as Rashawn Ross, Tim Reynolds and Jeff Coffin (who stepped in after the death of founding member LeRoi Moore) — would be headlining a four-stop, multi-act Caravan festival from June to September.
On February 22, members of Dmb's fan club, the Warehouse, received a cryptic "save the date" e-mail...

When Domino signs a band it's time to listen up, because there is a real good chance they're incredible. The label recently signed Chief, a 4-piece from Santa Monica, CA, consisting of Evan Koga, Mike Moonves and brothers Danny and Michael Fujikawa. I haven't yet heard all of their debut record "Modern Rituals," due out next week, but the little I have left me with mixed impressions.
Paste says they're "for fans of" Coldplay and Phosphorescent. I'd never even use those two words in the same sentence, let alone group the two bands in the same anything (Phosphorescent is lovely and soothes my inner man anger, but I'd rather drink turpentine and piss on a brush fire than listen to Coldplay).
It may be, like this seemingly incongruous comparison, that there is sometimes a dichotomy between the band's intentions and what gets finally produced. I couldn't reconcile two of the songs I heard,...

There are a lot of options at the cinema this weekend. There is no doubt about that. If you're looking for high-powered laughs, there's "Dinner for Schmucks," which stars Paul Rudd, Steve Carell and Zach Galifianakis in a knockdown, drag-out blast of physical yuks. For something a little more sensitive, there's the Zac Efron vehicle "Charlie St. Cloud," which reminds us all that life is for living (and not hallucinating your deceased little brother).
But we're going to be super-honest: The movie we're most excited about this weekend is "Cats and Dogs 2: The Revenge of Kitty Galore." The sequel to the 2001 digitally-animated animal showdown (the dogs won that particular battle, by the way). The new film sees the animals banding together to take on the titular Kitty Galore (voiced by Bette Midler and described as a "hardcore felinist") in a match of wits, stunts and lots of jokes about fur.

David Letterman sure threw down the gauntlet last week. The 63-year-old host of "The Late Show with David Letterman" proved that he can still swing with the younger crowd, as he devoted the entire Friday night (June 25) edition of his show to a visit by Jay-z and Eminem. Jigga sat down for a chat about LeBron James (among other things), Slim Shady read off the night's "Late Night Top 10 List" and they both adjourned to the roof of the Ed Sullivan Theater for a three-song performance that included Em's "Not Afraid," Hova's "On to the Next One" and the tag-team affair that is "Renegade." What will Letterman — and more importantly, the rest of the late night community — do for an encore?

A heartfelt homage to ageless songs On Twistable, Turnable Man, a hodgepodge of artists come forth to honor Shel Silverstein’s plaintive country songs and wacky children’s poetry with an affectionate, reverent tribute. The homage was co-produced by Bobby Bare Sr., one of Silverstein’s closest collaborators, along with his son, Bobby Bare Jr. The pair gives Twistable, Turnable Man an invaluable dichotomy of old and new, pairing artists like Dr. Dog alongside Ray Price to illustrate the enduring nature of Silverstein’s words. Silverstein’s language—sometimes whimsical, sometimes poignant, often both—is honored through the smoky drawls of Sarah Jarosz, the freewheeling lilt of...

Jonah Hill in Get Him to the Greek
Photo: Universal Pictures The first time I noticed Jonah Hill was his role as the foul-mouthed friend in Superbad even though he'd had roles in such films as Evan Almighty, Click and I Heart Huckabees before that, and, of course, his small roles in Judd Apatow's The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up. However, Superbad was three years ago and now Hill's built a solid resume of comedic roles and this summer even moves into more dramatic territory with Fox Searchlight's Cyrus and will follow that up with the straightforward drama Moneyball in 2011 for Capote director Bennett Miller and opposite Brad Pitt. This is all on top of a script he's co-writing for an adaptation of "21 Jump Street", which he will also star in. To say this 26-year-old has come a long way would be an understatement.

I'm exhausted, pretty sure I'm getting sick, and have a headache more often than not. I'd say this was related to the end of the semester, but I think it's just that May is approaching which basically marks the beginning of summer here in North Cuba and the change of seasons always does screwy things to me. I'm lucky enough to be fleeing town in Mid-May so I don't have to stick around part of for what one prominent South Floridian writer (Dave Barry) referred to as "Giant Armpit Season" which falls roughly between June and September. You can spot the tourists pretty easily those months because they're the ones outside. Also, they always look surprised when the afternoon monsoons roll up. Don't get me wrong, I love the whole jungle meeting the ocean sort of environment down here, but when it's so humid I have to grow gills to...

After being dominated for weeks by movie stars, the talk shows are all about music this week. There are some excellent excuses to stay up way past your bed time in the coming days, as there will be some electrifying performances from some of the best artists working. Sadly, David Letterman will be left out in the cold, as "The Late Show" only airs twice (on Tuesday, April 6 and Wednesday, April 7). That seems like an excellent excuse to tune in to "The Tonight Show," as Jay Leno welcomes Slash and Andrew Stockdale (performing the new single "By the Sword" from Slash's new solo album) on Tuesday, Corinne Bailey Rae on Wednesday and Train (whose "Hey Soul Sister" continues a dominant climb up the charts) on Thursday (April 8). Leno will also chat with the likes of David Boreanaz, Demi Moore and David Duchovny.
