Michael Winterbottom’s production company Revolution Films is opening an Italian outpost, Variety can exclusively confirm.
The production outfit, known for films and TV series including the Boris Johnson-inspired “This England” and the upcoming TIFF contender “Shoshana,” is in the process of setting up an office in the country, say sources with knowledge of the expansion. Longtime Revolution exec Melissa Parmenter will be running the new branch.
Revolution has increasingly been working in Italy in recent years and a source tells Variety the company is looking to make more films there. “Shoshana” (which was previously titled “Promised Land”) is set in Israel but was entirely shot in Italy. The film, which will premiere at TIFF on Friday, is set during the British Mandate of Palestine in the 1930s, when the daughter of an Israeli revolutionary (Irina Starshenbaum) falls in love with a British soldier (played by Douglas Booth).

Our faith sees the wedding day not as the place of arrival, but the place where the adventure really begins.”
The new season, which launches Nov. 15, will follow on the heels of Season 3’s plot, which ended around the late ’70s on Queen Elizabeth’s (Olivia Colman) 25th year...

Oscar-nominated helmer Jean-Pierre Jeunet (“Amélie”) directs. Guillaume Laurant and Jean-Pierre Jeunet are writing and Eskwad’s Richard Grandpierre and Frédéric Doniguian are producing.
German and English-language “Transatlantic 473” will be directed by Peter Thorwarth (“The Last Cop”). He co-writes with Stefan Holz and the plot turns on a hijacking with a supernatural twist.
“Munich” will also be in German and English. Ben Power is adapting the book, which is set in pre-Second World War Europe.

When the matriarch of a British-Iranian family goes missing in London, her loved ones find themselves on an offbeat spiritual journey to track her down, setting their old world traditions on a collision course with their new world surroundings.
Inspired by her own Iranian roots, “Mercy” is the feature debut of British-Iranian director Mandi Riggi. Andrew Eaton (“The Crown”) will executive produce, with a cast that includes F. Murray Abraham, Hiam Abbass, Emun Elliott, Sarah Snook and Yasmin Paige. The film was selected for Mia’s co-production market and pitching forum.
“Mercy” draws on Riggi’s upbringing in the U.K., where she lived until the age of 14, after her parents left Iran in the wake of the 1979 revolution. Though they arrived “with hope in their eyes” and plans for a better life, the director said the bittersweet decision weighed on them long afterward.

Exclusive: Veep pair Chris Addison and Will Smith have reunited to create a transatlantic fantasy detective series, Warlock Holmes (w/t).
The British multihyphenates are writing the series, which is described as Princess Bride-meets-Game of Thrones. The project already has a British broadcaster lined up and I hear that the project has been the talk of La as it is being pitched to U.S. broadcasters.

Visual effects firm Framestore is behind the acclaimed space movie, but is UK film making a giant leap, or is funding falling?
After picking up a galaxy of awards, the space thriller Gravity is tipped for further glory at the Oscars on Sunday. Welcome, gorgeous people, to the biggest night in British Film. We’re here at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and we’ll be liveblogging as the night rolls on.
12 Years a Slave, Gravity, American Hustle, Captain Phillips and Philomena have the majority of nominations and are all competing for Best Picture. It is an undeniably strong year for British Film and we’re grateful for a spotlight as wide and as bright as this one to be shone this evening.
If you haven’t already checked out our BAFTA competition, do so now - the prizes are worth £700. Blimey.
We’ll be updating this liveblog minute by minute until my fingers fall off with the most recent update being shown at the top of the top so do keep refreshing.
Great to have you with us.

Much like the media sensationalism around the Amanda Knox trial itself, there have been misleading reports that Michael Winterbottom’s new film The Face Of An Angel is an Amanda Knox exposé.
“It’s not a film about Amanda Knox,” Michael Winterbottom says emphatically about his new film, being sold at Efm by WestEnd Films. “The case in our film is a fictional case.”
“Once people see the film the talk about [Amanda Knox] will stop,” he adds.
It’s easy to see why there is some confusion, as Winterbottom acquired the rights to Angel Face: Sex, Murder and the Inside Story of Amanda Knox by the American journalist Barbie Latza Nadeau. But he uses that book just as a jumping off point for his original script (written by Paul Viragh).
Winterbottom’s story is about a British filmmaker (Daniel Bruhl) who goes to Italy to study the aftermath of a high-profile murder case. He meets the...

Investment in British film rises by 14%, taking it over £1bn for 2013, though cinema admissions have fallen
• Andrew Eaton: Why being British is no longer a handicap when it comes to films
The British Film Institute heralded a billion-pound UK film industry today, publishing figures that show that investment from overseas sources in film production in the UK rose by 14% to £1.075bn for 2013.
The rise was spurred on by 37 major international productions basing themselves in the UK, with everything from forthcoming Marvel blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy to starry dramas like The Monuments Men being at least partially made on these shores. Two of the most surefire hits of the coming years, in the next Star Wars movie and Avengers: Age of Ultron, are also set to be made in the UK.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the nominations for the British Academy Film Awards and Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" led the pack with 11 nominations including Best Film, British Film (who knew "Gravity" was a British movie?), Director for Cuaron, Screenplay for Cuaron and his son Jonas, and Actress for Sandra Bullock.
The biggest snub in my humble opinion was "Dallas Buyers Club" which appeared nowhere on the nominations list. Apparently, the British Academy did not deem Matthew McConaughey or Jared Leto award-worthy!
The BAFTA Awards will take place on Feb. 16 at the Royal Opera house in London. Will "Gravity" emerge as the victorious movie that night? And by the way, "Gravity" was my No. 1 favorite film of 2013!
Here's the complete list of BAFTA nominations:

Early this morning saw the announcement of the nominations for the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) awards for 2013. For the most part, they look like all of the other guild nominations we’ve seen over the past month or so (including all five director nominees who were just nominated for the DGA’s top award), but there are a few interesting differences to take note of.
First off, Philomena has a much stronger presence here, but given that it is a British film, it’s hardly surprising. You may also notice a lot of love for Behind the Candelabra, a film that was only shown on TV in the States, making it ineligible for theatrical awards.
However, aside from that, just about all the major players are here. Gravity leads the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Director, and Best Actress. 12 Years a...
