If you’re confused as to who is actually able to compete for the newly announced virtual Tony Awards this fall, you’re not alone. The Tony Awards Administration Committee announced a new cut off date of February 19, 2020. That means that the 2019-2020 Broadway season was cut incredibly short.
Musical races are most heavily affected by the shortened season. “West Side Story” will have to wait until next year to compete as it opened after the February 19th eligibility cutoff date. Other scheduled revivals of “Caroline, or Change” and “Company” were postponed due to the Broadway shutdown. As such there will be no Revival of a Musical category this year. Other categories, like Best Musical and Director of a Musical, will likely see their number of nominees reduced to three due to a limited number of contenders.
Luckily, there are plenty of plays in contention since many of these non-musical outings premiere in the fall.

In recent years, Roundabout Theatre Company has demonstrated a knack for pairing stellar actresses in revivals by acclaimed playwrights, including Annette Bening in Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons” (2019), Jessica Lange in Eugene O’Neill’s “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” (2016), and Diane Lane in Anton Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard” (2016).
That trend continues this fall with Marisa Tomei’s return to the stage in Tennessee Williams’s early-career play “The Rose Tattoo.” Set in a predominantly Sicilian community in a Gulf Coast town in 1950, the play centers on Tomei’s Serafina Delle Rose, a widowed seamstress who finds lust after her husband’s death with a man who resembles her late spouse.
This production of “Rose Tattoo,” which originated at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2016, officially opened on Broadway at the American Airlines Theatre on October 15. Trip Cullman directs the 18-member ensemble.

Imagine you’re invited to some netherworld, Southern Gothic-themed cocktail party peopled with Tennessee Williams heroines. There’s Amanda Wingfield and Blanche DuBois competing for pity with wilted stories of glory days, Maggie the Cat in her slip, stalking waiters, and lusty Maxine walking a leashed iguana and a cabana boy or two. Even among this look-at-me bunch, The Rose Tattoo‘s Serafina Delle Rose would be a spectacle, the brash, loud and vulgar center of attention outtalking everyone else, bragging about her long-dead husband’s bedroom talents, how the two got those colored lights going like even Stanley Kowalski would envy.
Now imagine Serafina portrayed by Marisa Tomei in prodigious Cousin Vinny Oscar-getting mode, and you’ll maybe get a sense of director Trip Cullman’s tonally raucous production of The Rose Tattoo, opening on Broadway tonight in a Roundabout Theatre Company presentation at American Airlines Theatre.

New York City has a musical quality to all of its chaos. Stand in the right spot in Manhattan and you can hear it. The Sound of Silence knows and embraces this. An independent drama that contains a wholly lived in feel, there’s a vibe her that gets under your skin in the best way possible. Rather hypnotic in its soundscape and overall style, there’s a lot more her than meets the eyes. In fact, if it weren’t for a few small flaws, this would be a rather remarkable film. The plot is deceptively simple. Peter Lucian (Peter Sarsgaard) is a “house tuner” in New York City, with the keen ability to figure out what sound in your home is throwing off your entire life. A thorough check of your apartment could lead to the need for a new toaster, for example, as the various electronic hums...

"The silence is full of sound." IFC Films has finally debuted an official trailer for The Sound of Silence, an indie drama that marks the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Michael Tyburski adapting his own short film (Palimpsest). This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and it's opening in select theaters in just a few more weeks for those curious about checking it out. The Sound of Silence stars Peter Sarsgaard as a successful "house tuner" in New York City, who calibrates the sound in people's homes in order to adjust their moods. But he meets a client with a problem he can't solve, no matter what he tries. The film is nicely described as "a serene contemplation of people living in their modern environment—and their desire to understand and even control it." The cast includes Rashida Jones, Tony Revolori, Austin Pendleton, Bruce Altman, Tina Benko,...

Robert Mapplethorpe shot flowers, children, celebs (Warhol, Capote, the young Arnold Schwarzenegger) and himself in high-contrast black-and-white that commanded attention. But what made him infamous and iconic were his portraits of nudes, often reduced to body parts (a hand, a torso, a black penis enveloped in white hands) and often in Bdsm positions that increasingly reflected his queer-world obsessions. A year after Mapplethorpe’s death, a retrospective of his work at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati was charged with obscenity simply for displaying his so-called “dirty pictures,” creating a...

Rising to prominence in a changing cultural landscape, Robert Mapplethorpe may have been just been in the right place at the right time. At the cultural vanguard he experienced both the free love era of the 1960s with Patti Smith–treated in the film as an impromptu ordeal he was thrown into likely to satisfy his parents–and documented the AIDs crisis as his subjects started to fade away. As a biopic, Mapplethorpe comes up short, falling into the kind of tropes artist pictures tend to plunge into, full of grandiose speeches foreshadowing what’s to come, perhaps a victim of low-budget indie filmmaking forcing compromises. Providing a Wikipedia overview of a complex career, the film chooses to provoke with Mapplethorpe’s images rather than totally engage with his conceptual practices.

A renegade Catholic boy raised by conservative parents in Queens, New York, Robert Mapplethorpe transformed some of the most blasphemous subjects on earth — gay sex, Satanism, bondage — into beautiful black-and-white images. In her first scripted feature, doc filmmaker Ondi Timoner (“We Live in Public”) effectively does the opposite, taking a queer art-world enfant terrible and filtering his life back into gritty 16mm color, attempting to convey the nuances that made him such an enigmatic figure. To her credit, Timoner doesn’t shy away from the hardcore bits, which means her film will have to go out unrated (or else suffer the damnation of an Nc-17), but neither does she capture what made the radical photographer tick.

Flesh and Bone, Season 1
Created by Moira Walley-Beckett
Aired Sundays at 8 pm Et on Starz
Over the past few years, Starz has made its mark on the tv landscape with numerous shows, from Spartacus to Party Down. Their latest series, from Breaking Bad writer Moira Walley-Beckett, delves into the world of ballet dancing. Titled Flesh and Bone, the miniseries explores the world from the perspective of the people associated with the American Ballet Company, and while there are some strong ideas and themes presented, the series unfortunately fails to develop them effectively.
The season’s focus is on power and control, most notably the type that is exerted over women by men. The effects that control has over different characters is by far the most compelling aspect of the season, starting from Claire’s attempts to get out of the control of the men surrounding her. This begins with the...

“A little pain is a fact of this life. To feel it is a choice. I choose no.”
Paul said it way back in the premiere: a ballerina’s job is to make the arduous look effortless. Full Dress takes that thought and runs with it, giving us a full hour of people trying desperately to cover up flaws, faults, and mistakes. Some of it, like Jessica’s desperate quest to cover up her embezzlement, is a nerve-fraying good time. The rest is yet another hour that hammers its theme home at the cost of any sort of sense of momentum. There’s a compelling idea for an episode buried in the mess, a sort of bloody, desperate rush to the finish line cemented by a deal with the devil, but the series has invested so little time in building up the tension of the impending ballet, in connecting the characters to one another,...

We have new images from Focus Features' Admission, starring Paul Rudd and Tina Fey. We've suspected the bad news for months but now, it's been confirmed that the Brotherhood series has indeed been cancelled by Showtime.
Brotherhood revolves around the lives of two brothers in an Irish-American neighborhood in Rhode Island. Tommy Caffee (Jason Clarke) is a family man and local politician while his brother Michael (Jason Isaacs) is a professional criminal who's involved with the Irish mob. Others in the cast of this gritty drama include Kevin Chapman, Annabeth Gish, Fiona C. Erickson, Brian Scannell, Kerry O'Malley, Fionnula Flanagan, Madison Garland, Billy Smith, Frank Ridley, Matt Servitto, Ethan Embry, Brian F. O'Byrne, Tina Benko, and John Fiore.
The series debuted on Showtime on July 9, 2006 and, despite some very positive reviews, Brotherhood didn't attract a lot of viewers; just 450,000. Showtime nevertheless renewed the show for a second season -- albeit one made up of only 10 episodes. They started airing in September of 2007 and the...
