“This crazy whirlwind of a season has finally come to an end,” declares Sam Eckmann as we kick off our final Tony Awards nominations predictions slugfest of 2024. We begin our conversation with the musical categories and the ever-challenging race for Best Musical. Sam and I both feel “pretty secure” about the top three shows – “Suffs,” “Illinoise” and “Hell’s Kitchen” – and we surprisingly concur on the final two slots, predicting “Here Lies Love” and “The Outsiders.” There are so many potential nominees in contention, though, that we cite our alternate picks as I opt for “Days of Wine and Roses” as my number six, and Sam goes with “The Notebook.” Watch our full Tony Awards video slugfest above.
You can also watch both of us giving our wishlist picks, pleading to Tony nomination voters to choose some people who might be under the radar. Watch that video here.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have, in less than 15 years, established themselves as the most exciting composers working in contemporary film.
Their first score was David Fincher’s masterpiece “The Social Network.” The score was a haunting, atmospheric triumph, and it won them Oscars, an even more impressive feat given the Academy’s historic anti-rock band bias. And what began as an exclusive collaboration with Fincher soon blossomed outward – they have worked with Pixar and Ken Burns, scored a prestige TV version of Alan Moore’s “Watchmen,” and an animated “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie. They can do it all, while remaining uniquely them.
They are unstoppable, too. This week “Challengers,” from Luca Guadagnino, is released alongside their soundtrack album. And they have a pair of scores still coming this year – for the big-budget Apple movie “The Gorge” and for Guadagnino’s “Queer,” starring Daniel Craig.

James Cameron has backed a new UK film studio and said it could act as a base for his technology training center, but the £750M ($927M) Marlow Film Studios still requires a planning greenlight and is proving controversial in its local area.
According to the Financial Times, the triple Oscar-winner has written to Buckinghamshire Council in support of the plans in the past few weeks and said it could be a potential UK and European base and training centre for Lightstorm3D, a company Cameron has set up to develop tools and technology for movies.
Cameron said the 22.5% of global box office the UK delivered in 2023 will “grow as a result” of Marlow, which is in Buckinghamshire, South East England.
“But embracing that opportunity necessitates support and boldness in thinking,” the Ft reported Cameron wrote. “The next iteration of screen storytelling requires a purpose-built working space of exceptional quality, and trained professionals.

Martin Scorsese is set to turn to his long-gestating Frank Sinatra biopic once he’s finished his Jesus Christ film, it seems. More here.
It took him a long time to make, release and promote Killers Of The Flower Moon, but Martin Scorsese is now planning to get back to a movie set. Two movie sets as it happens, with apparent plans to make his next pair of films back-to-back.
The man has more energy at 81 than I have at, er, my age. Proof? Well, we knew that he was planning to make a film about Jesus Christ, the fourth time he’ll have directed an overtly religious-themed feature. The plan with that is for it to be a much slimmer film than his last two features (The Irishman preceded Killers Of The Flower Moon of course).
But now we learn that he’s resurrected a long-time passion project (another one!

Let It Be, a documentary about The Beatles not commercially released since it was broadcast over 50 years ago, will be available to watch on Disney+ in May.
Any time is a good time to be a fan of The Beatles, but the last year had been particularly fruitful when it comes to new Beatles material, most notably the long awaited release of Now And Then, which is now officially the final ever Beatles song, which was subsequently used by Matthew Vaughn in Argylle. Oh, and Sam Mendes is set to direct four Beatles biopics too.
Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg and released in May 1970 amid the hysteria of The Beatles’ breakup, Let It Be has been unavailable for broadcast or public screenings for more than 50 years. The documentary will stand as a companion piece to Peter Jackson’s Get Out series.

Before Sam Mendes gets into production on his four separate yet connected Beatles biopics, another project featuring one of the greatest rock bands of all time is arriving with a fresh coat of paint. Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s 1970 film Let It Be, released around the time of the band’s breakup, was long unavailable for a half-century, and now thanks to Peter Jackson and team, it’s been restored for a release on Disney+ starting May 8.
“Let It Be contains footage not featured in the Get Back docuseries, bringing viewers into the studio and onto Apple Corps’ London rooftop in January 1969 as The Beatles, joined by Billy Preston, write and record their Grammy Award®-winning album Let It Be, with its Academy Award®-winning title song, and perform live for the final time as a group,” notes the press release. “With the release of The Beatles: Get Back, fan clamour for...

It must be the 1960s all over again because Beatlemania is running wild with no signs of stopping anytime soon. Fans of the legendary band have been enjoying something of a renaissance in recent years, between Peter Jackson's Disney+ docuseries "The Beatles: Get Back" in 2021, another Beatles-centric project that the director is reportedly working on, and, of course, the recent news that Sam Mendes will be giving the pop group the "Avengers" treatment with a series of four separate biopics in the near future. Now, it seems Jackson's efforts have directly led to yet another celebration of the Fab Four.

Oppenheimer duo Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas, and Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos all received awards in a surprise UK honours list published on Thursday (March 28) on the eve of the Easter break.
London-born British-American director Nolan was made a knight bachelor for his services to film, meaning he now carries the title ‘sir’, while his partner and long-time producer Emma Thomas received a damehood.
The duo recently collected the best picture Oscar for Oppenheimer at the 96th Academy Awards (alongside fellow producer Charles Roven), while Nolan was named best director on a night that saw the film win seven awards.

Throughout cinematic history, audiences have been enthralled by an array of villainous characters, ranging from the intellectually formidable to the utterly deranged. While many villains adhere to conventional tropes, there are those whose portrayal transcends cliches, etching a lasting impression on viewers’ minds.
Heath Ledger as the Joker in The Dark Knight
One such character is the Joker, whose many interpretations so far have showcased the immense talent of the actors who brought him to life. Cesar Romero’s portrayal in the 1960s Batman television series marked the character’s first appearance, setting a playful yet sinister tone. However, it was Heath Ledger’s portrayal in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight that truly redefined the role. Ledger’s depiction of the Joker as a symbol of chaos and anarchy resonated deeply with audiences and left an indelible mark.

Music movies are having a moment — if, indeed, they ever stopped having one. Take the pop-music biopic. There are times, like right now, when it surges in popularity, yet the form has never gone out of style. And music documentaries, a staple of the indie-film world, have only proliferated during the streaming era. This means that they have to compete for visibility, but a ton of them are getting made and (mostly) getting seen. They’ve become a happy epidemic.
A few, like “Amy” or “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?,” are popular and vital enough to have carved out a place in the culture — and, in the case of both those films, to have inspired the creation of a biopic. I have it on good authority that when you’re trying to put together a music documentary, the prospect of it spawning a biopic can be a key selling point.

It is fair to say that the line between sports and films is often blurred in Tinseltown. While athletes dabble in acting, actors often try their hand at sports. As an illustration, consider Conor McGregor, the Irish mixed martial arts fighter who just made his acting debut in the latest flick, Road House, helmed by Doug Liman.
His performance received high praise from moviegoers and critics alike, with some even suggesting he could be the next “Arnold Schwarzenegger”. Regardless, he may have stolen the show in the Jake Gyllenhaal starrer film, but he is far from ready to dethrone Dave Bautista. Not to be overlooked is the fact that the latter has an equally impressive acting resumé.

Billy Magnussen always understands the assignment. Whatever the medium or genre, the actor manages to stand out with an impressive range. He has literally played a Disney prince — twice! — in the film versions of “Into the Woods” and “Aladdin.” He earned a Tony nomination for his role as a dimwitted young lover in “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” and has stood out in ensemble films like “Game Night” and “The Big Short.”
But Magnussen also excels at playing the bad guy, such as the tech billionaire who installs a tracking device in his ex-wife in “Made for Love” to a Nazi officer in “The Survivor.” But never more deliciously than in “Road House,” a reimaging of the 1989 Patrick Swayze classic. The new version, hitting Amazon Prime Video this week, stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter who becomes a bouncer at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys.

“Oppenheimer” took home an impressive seven Academy Awards at Sunday’s Oscars, including the night’s top prize of Best Picture. The Universal movie also won Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy amongst a number of other awards. That is one below the total of eight wins we predicted for the film as “The Zone of Interest” beat the movie to win Best Sound. However, seven is still a huge tally and places “Oppenheimer” amongst the Best Picture winners to take home the highest amount of Oscars this century. In early 2021, Megan Ellison emerged from a self-imposed Hollywood exile and did something she hadn’t done in over a year: She signed on to back a movie, Nimona. There was a time when this would not have been remarkable, when Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures was producing five films a year and she was considered the industry’s own Medici, the premier patron of prestige cinema. But Ellison had backed away from Hollywood in 2019 after a series of missteps and become elusive even to some of her own executives. When her former distribution chief, Erik Lomis, asked her whether she wanted to look at some reels of Nimona, which was about to get axed in Disney’s closure of Blue Sky Animation, “I wasn’t really engaging in new film projects at the time,” Ellison said, answering THR’s questions by email. “But being curious, I said yes.”

Welcome to the Beatles Cinematic Universe. Continuing the current wave of music biopics — which just saw its most recent box-office triumph with Bob Marley: One Love — director Sam Mendes (Skyfall) has signed on to helm not one, but four separate Beatles biopics, all due in 2027. The movies, set to begin production next year, will each focus a single Beatle’s perspective, so John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and even Ringo Starr each get a turn in the spotlight.

Last week, it was revealed that American Beauty and Skyfall director Sam Mendes conceived and has signed on to take on the monumental task of telling the story of arguably the most popular rock band of all time, The Beatles. His epic concept was not to have just one biopic but to make four separate movies, with each film focusing on a member of the group. Not many details have been announced beyond that, but as Mendes pitched his idea to Hollywood, Sony Pictures would end up outbidding the other studios for the chance to release these movies.
The Hollywood Reporter now reveals that Sony head Tom Rothman is betting big on this project by releasing all four movies in the same year. Rothman told THR, “You have to match the boldness of the idea with a bold release strategy. There hasn’t been an enterprise like this before, and...

Days after Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love overperformed in its opening weekend at the box office, Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman stole a bit of the spotlight Feb. 20 in unveiling not one but four intersecting feature films from Sam Mendes about The Beatles, each focusing on one member of the Fab Four: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
“You have to match the boldness of the idea with a bold release strategy,” Rothman tells The Hollywood Reporter about the project that earned the Oscar-winning director a coveted signoff from the group’s selective label Apple Corps. “There hasn’t been an enterprise like this before, and you can’t think about it in traditional releasing terms.”

If you told me there was a plan in place to make four Beatles biopics — one each about John, Paul, George, and Ringo — and that they were going to be directed by Richard Linklater, I’d be suffused with curiosity and excitement. If you told me that those same four movies were going to be directed by Martin Scorsese, I’d be suffused with curiosity and excitement. If you told me that a quartet of Beatles biopics were going to be directed (one apiece) by Linklater, Scorsese, Greta Gerwig, and Todd Haynes, I’d be suffused with curiosity and excitement — and, in fact, that last option would make a beautiful kind of sense. When you think about it, why would anyone — even Scorsese, the poet of rock-operatic drama — want to direct all four Beatles biopics? Talk about hogging the spoils.

As a musical unit, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr enjoyed the most unique experience in popular entertainment. While Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra similarly spent the most exciting periods of their careers circumnavigating hordes of rabid fans, persistent, compulsory photo-ops, and suitcases of ticket sales cash, they still broke through as solo song interpreters. The Beatles, by contrast, became a global phenomenon as a group, and a very busy one, in and out of the studio, mostly writing their own music. In keeping with the musical unit’s consistent commitment to innovation, Apple Corps. and Sony Pictures announced a truly revolutionary take on their cinematic biographies. Director Sam Mendes will helm four separate films on the Beatles’ story, each told from the perspective of the individual players.
All four features will roll out theatrically in 2027. This may appear excessive, but it is the only way to cover the narrative properly.

Paramount received the best Valentine’s Day gift any studio could hope for when Bob Marley: One Love, the biopic about the legendary Jamaican musician, set a new midweek record for the holiday when jamming to $14 million and besting the $11.5 million grossed by The Vow in 2012.
But Valentine’s Day turned out to be only a warm-up act as the film transformed into an all-audience box office sensation in another win for the music biopic boom sweeping Hollywood. Iconic music artists — of which there is no shortage — are providing studios with much-needed IP as tried and true genres, namely superhero movies, lose their singing powers. Pop music phenoms come and go, fall in and out of favor and sometimes fade into total obscurity. Very few remain relevant a decade removed from their initial success, and you can count on maybe two hands the number of artists who can knock out a new song or reissue and top the Billboard charts 50-plus years after their debut.
And then there's The Beatles.
From the moment they scored their first number one hit in the U.K. with 1963's "From Me to You," The Beatles drew on their multitude of musical influences — blues, country, rockabilly, and the sui generis soul sounds pulsating out of Motown — to create perfectly constructed, infectiously catchy singles that earwormed their way into the fabric of your being. Within three years of breaking big in the U.S., they released the pioneering folk-rock LP "Rubber Soul," flirted with psychedelia and raga on the expansive "Revolver,...

Following the news that Mendes will direct four fab films about the Fab Four, our critic picks his fantasy lineup
Just when we were getting sick of the Marvel Cinematic Universe … Sam Mendes comes along with the Beatles Cinematic Universe. It’s a quartet of interlocking movies about the Fab Four, each centred on one band member, and with the fascinating promise of overlaps and Pov shifts, perhaps inspired by Lucas Belvaux’s triple-decker Trilogy pictures or Joao Canijo’s mirror image films Bad Living and Living Bad. Mendes’s moptop movies may tag quadrilaterally around key moments … Shea Stadium, the Maureen Cleave interview, Lennon’s death? But who to cast? Here is my fantasy lineup.

Hot on the heel of the announcement that filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos is to direct the remake of the Korean movie ‘Save The Green Planet’ BAFTA Winner, Emma Stone has entered into talks to join the cast.
Stone is thought to be up for playing a supporting role. The latest project would mark Lanthimos and Stone’s sixth collaboration. The pair first worked together on ‘The Favourite’ and will next have ‘Kinds of Kindness,’ an anthology film which also stars Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley. ‘Kinds of Kindness’ is slated to be released later this year and could world premiere at Cannes.
Originally a South Korean film directed by Jang Joon-hwan in 2003, the eccentric black comedy involves a disillusioned young man who captures and tortures a businessman whom he believes to be part of an alien invasion. A battle of wits ensues between the captor, his devoted girlfriend, the businessman and a private detective.

Sam Mendes, the man behind films like 1917 and Skyfall, is slated to helm four distinct The Beatles movies, each concentrating on a different band member. As a result, actors who can carry a tune and have a passable Liverpool accent may definitely be polishing their resumes in the hopes of landing an audition.
For those who are unfamiliar, The Beatles were an influential English rock band founded in Liverpool in 1960 by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The band was instrumental in the development of counterculture in the 1960s and the acceptance of popular music as an art form.

Having said that, Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, and Starr were iconic for a reason. Finding an actor with that unique blend of singing prowess, seductive good looks, charisma, and something extra that makes pop music icons stand out from ordinary individuals is going to be challenging.

The Beatles legends John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr will be the subject of a different upcoming feature film. The four separate films will tell the stories of each of them in standalone narratives. The films will be directed by the Oscar nominated filmmaker Sam Mendes. Sam plans to make four separate movies, one from each Beatles member’s point of view, reports Variety.
They will intersect to “tell the astonishing story of the greatest band in history,” leading up to their 1970 breakup, according to a press release. Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the families of the late John Lennon and George Harrison have granted full life story and music rights for the scripted films.
Sam said in a statement: “I’m honoured to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies.

“American Beauty” Oscar winner and “Skyfall” director Sam Mendes is taking on the most ambitious project of his career thus far. The “1917” filmmaker is setting up a quartet of Beatles biopics with Sony Pictures Entertainment, Deadline first reported.
The project will feature four theatrically released films, with one told from each member of the Fab Four’s point of view. It will be the first time the Beatles’ company, Apple Corps Ltd., and the members of the Beatles or their estates have granted full life and music rights for a scripted film, according to Deadline.
Mendes will direct all four interconnected films, which are slated for a 2027 release. Writers are in the process of being hired, and a release schedule will be announced at a later date. Mendes will produce through his Neal Street Productions banner alongside his partner Pippa Harris and Julie Pastor. Jeff Jones will executive produce for Apple Corps Ltd.

The thing about The Beatles is, they weren’t just the best band in the world. It’s that they were several different types of best-band-ever over the course of seven short years – first jangly mop-top chart-toppers, then harder-edged rock ’n’ rollers, then psychedelic superstars, with additional detours into folk-rock and more along the way. So the question is this: how do make a biopic movie about The Beatles? The answer is, that you make several Beatles biopics at once. That’s exactly the approach set to be taken by Sam Mendes – the Skyfall director is planning to make not one but four intersecting Beatles biopics, one following the perspective of each member, and all due in cinemas in 2027. We expect he’ll be working eight days a week to make it all happen.

When it comes to arguably the biggest acts in rock music history, how does one go about making a film adaptation that lives up to the legend? The King of Rock ‘N’ Roll, Elvis Presley, would get his own flashy, epic treatment courtesy of Baz Luhrmann’s visual flair in 2022. But for a band like The Beatles, how do you truly capture the journey in a feature film? Director Sam Mendes has the answer. You do four feature films. Deadline has the breaking story that the Skyfall, Spectre and American Beauty director will audaciously attempt to cover the story of The Beatles with four films, which will each concentrate on a member of the band.

Somewhere, my Beatles-adoring mom is going wild. After watching several of the most famous singers and bands in the world receive the biopic treatment in recent years, from "Bohemian Rhapsody" to "Rocketman" to "Elvis", it's now time for arguably the most legendary musical group of them all to get their time in the limelight once again. And no, 2019's "Yesterday" doesn't quite count.
After dominating the charts and becoming everyone's favorite music group on the planet for several years running back during the swingin' sixties, The Beatles deserve nothing less than the full red-carpet treatment. Sony apparently agrees, as the studio announced this morning that acclaimed director Sam Mendes will be setting his sights on The Beatles for a truly ambitious undertaking. See, this isn't just your run-of-the-mill biopic, mind you. According to the press release, the English rock band will basically be getting their own Avengers-style crossover. Yes, really.

Like a chimera of any intelligent person’s least-favorite storytelling models, we are (in the sense of a diagnosis) finally seeing the cinematic universe intersect with musical biopics. And where to start but the very biggest? Today brings the rather momentous news that Sam Mendes will direct a four-film Beatles epic that tells their story from each member’s perspective, arriving in 2027 via “an innovative [and groundbreaking] release cadence.” If that seems an odd term for movies, you’re correct; I’ve only ever seen it used for software, which is to say: an engineered product.
Though let’s not be too cynical just yet. The Beatles’ Apple Corps Ltd. are fully behind the project, which guarantees more of their music than any narrative feature yet. Mendes has certain ill instincts but, per his Bond pictures, can be a great keep-the-trains-running-on-time craftsman who hires the right people––imagine the Ed Sullivan Show...
