25 years ago “Strangers with Candy,” currently streaming on Paramount+, premiered on Comedy Central from the brains of Stephen Colbert, Paul Dinello, Mitch Rouse, and Amy Sedaris. Sedaris also starred as Jerri Blank, the 46-year-old bisexual junkie returning to high school as a freshman. The sitcom was structured like an after-school special with Jerri rarely learning from her past mistakes as she navigates the lessons of being a teenager all over again. I began watching the show in college, after recognizing it from flipping through the TV channels because Sedaris’ Jerri in passing freaked me out.
Its psychotic humor coupled with my own favorite genre — the high school comedy — was a perfect cyanide comedy cocktail. Aggressively offensive with an earnest heart of gold, “Strangers with Candy” was unlike anything I’d ever seen before and Amy Sedaris became my comedy hero.

“The Parent Trap” meets “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” with “Dicks: The Musical,” A24’s first forray into movie musicals. Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson star in the adaptation of their Off-Broadway show as two womanizing, misogynistic business salesmen who, when their companies merge, find out they are long-lost identical twins. The pair, then, hatch a plan to swap lives and get their parents back together, a task that proves much harder (and weirder) than they thought. Also starring Nathan Lane, Megan Mullaly, Megan Thee Stallion, and Bowen Yang, “Dicks: The Musical” will make its streaming debut on Friday, Feb. 2 on Max. You can watch with a 7-Day Free Trial of Max.

The Beekeeper (David Ayer)
It’s the time of year for smooth-brained relaxation. Moviegoers can recover from the holidays with the comfort of knowing Gerard Butler, Liam Neeson, or Jason Statham will be here to satisfy their mid-budget, action-programmer needs. Is it really the new year if one of those cherished Kings of January doesn’t appear on the release slate? There’s no Gerry or Liam, but the ever-reliable Statham dons a trucker hat and blue jeans to grit his way through David Ayer’s The Beekeeper, an overall valiant, occasionally fun attempt to take us out of Q1 doldrums. – Conor O. Curb Your Enthusiasm returns to Max this month in what’s being called the show’s final season (for now). If you’re not ready for the Larry David-centric comedy series to end, you can binge all eleven of the show’s previous seasons on Max right now before hitting the new episodes.
Tokyo Vice will also be back in February for season 2. Stars Ansel Elgort, Ken Watanabe, Rinko Kikuchi, Rachel Keller, Show Kasamatsu, and Ayumi Ito are joined by Kubozuka and Miki Maya this time around, as Jake Adelstein feels the danger closing in on him. Max also welcomes you to the premiere of the highly acclaimed (and highly depraved) Dicks: The Musical this month, as a couple of self-obsessed businessmen discover they’re identical twins and decided to bring their divorced parents back together.

Emmy winner Nathan Lane has joined Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the second installment of Ryan Murphy’s true-crime anthology series for Netflix.
Lane will play writer and investigative journalist Dominick Dunne who covered the Menendez brothers trial for Vanity Fair. Dunne is also known for his coverage of the O.J. Simpsons trial, which was the subject of Murphy’s Emmy-winning The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. Lane played “Dream Team” member F. Lee Bailey in the series, making this a return to the true-crime anthology genre and a reunion with Murphy.
On Monsters, Lane joins Nicholas Chavez and Cooper Koch, who play Lyle and Erik, respectively, as well as Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny, who portray their parents.

If there’s one takeaway from the LGBTQ narrative films that came into the world and across our screens this year, it’s the sheer variety of the stories there are to tell.
From real-world historical biopics and inspirational sports dramas, to tender love stories and raunchy comedies, there really was something for everyone this year. Captivating characters, fearless performances and narrative tapestries that defy convention and troublesome tropes all reigned supreme. As such, here are some of the best we got.
All of Us Strangers “All of Us Strangers” (Credit: Searchlight Pictures)
A new movie from the director of “Weekend” starring the Hot Priest from “Fleabag” and everyone’s favorite internet boyfriend should be enough to catch the interest of anyone listening — and “All of Us Strangers” lives up to that potential and then some. Chicago – Here we are again, the end of another year, and it’s time to momentarily look back. Thus opens the 10 Best Films Of 2023, the list that represents one soul interacting with the art of cinema. That soul belongs to Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com, Wbgr-fm and Wssr-fm.
So begins my list, with such a lofty and third person proclamation. By far, the story of the year is Barbenheimer (the same weekend release of Barbie and Oppenheimer), proving in the digital age that something weird and organic can take hold, and get more people to the theaters, celebrating a true movie event. Kudos to the movie celebrators who did both in one magic day.
I format my 10 Best to reflect the on-air reviews I do weekly on Wbgr-fm and Wssr-fm and New on Missourinet.com. Each of the 10 Best will be in the on-air or audio format for your listening pleasure.

As we wrap up our year-end coverage, IndieWire looks back at the people, projects, and ideas that defined 2023 — and what’s coming next.
If the antihero was the poster child for peak TV, then the downright off-putting and repulsive heroes of the story were ambassadors for film in 2023. Expulsion, waste, and self-destruction — bodily and psychic — were on the minds and in the guts of many of this year’s most divisive and in some cases beloved movies.
We’ve all seen the social media tagline that such and such “changed my DNA.” In a moment in which postures of self-deprecation and flagrant wallowing in our own soupy misery define internet expression, it’s only natural that the movies would respond — and the quote-unquote repulsiveness of such characters is borne out of a desire to transform, and maybe become, in the words of Radiohead, something happier, better.

Nearly two decades after The Lightning Thief was published, Percy Jackson fans are finally getting the faithful adaptation they’ve been waiting for with the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The show has a talented and stacked cast of actors that breathe new life into these characters and help transport us to a world where Greek gods, monsters, and everything in between are very real and very dangerous.
Here are the demigods, humans, gods, monsters, and more that you need to know in the world of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and the actors that bring them to life.
Walker Scobell is Percy Jackson
12-year-old Percy Jackson has always felt different from other kids his age. Adhd, a penchant for daydreaming, and an unlucky streak with bullies has gotten him kicked out of a number of schools, both private and public, but regardless he’s always felt safe...

Orlando: My Political Biography is an unlikely contender but you gotta love its boldness.
The Academy has released a couple of eligibility lists, including one for the Best Original Song race. Ninety-four different tunes have been submitted for the Oscar. It's three maximum for each movie, from which only two can be nominated for the same title. Barbie, The Face of the Faceless, A Good Person, The Little Mermaid, State of the Unity, and Wish have submitted three, while many other projects went for double trouble. There are no significant surprises in terms of omitted contenders, but some submission choices delight with their boldness, and others shock because their origin is so obscure. For example, I quibble with the one song chosen from Dicks: The Musical and Carmen. I'm also delighted that Orlando: My Political Biography threw its hat in the race and just found out...

Ninety-four songs and 149 scores have been deemed eligible in the music categories for the 96th annual Academy Awards, Variety has learned.
Voting began Thursday, with 390 members of the Academy music branch eligible to vote in this year’s competition. And for the first time in years, there appear to be no surprises or glaring omissions.
Any film can submit up to three songs, and the “Barbie” entries were as expected: Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made for,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and the Mark Ronson-Andrew Wyatt song “I’m Just Ken.”
Five other films submitted the maximum of three songs, including two from Disney: the live-action “The Little Mermaid,” with “For the First Time,” “The Scuttlebutt” and “Wild Uncharted Waters,” all by Alan Menken (who won Oscars for the original in 1989) and Lin-Manuel Miranda; and “Wish,” the Julia Michaels-Benjamin Rice tunes including “I’m a Star,...

From the heavenly heights of Bowen Yang as God in “Dicks: The Musical” to Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri beating the hell out of each other for “Bottoms,” 2023 was a near-biblical year for queer entertainment. Sure, LGBTQ film and TV had its fair share of sins — what with the “Red, White, and Royal Blue” butt prep scene and “Saltburn” bathtub of it all. Not to mention, we lost a handful of beloved TV series with the cancelations of “A League of Their Own” and the full-blown streaming removal of “The L Word: Generation Q” (among others). But all things created equal, it was a pretty fantastic year to be queer in Hollywood, with a slew of great new titles arriving in theaters and across platforms as diverse voices continued to break through to LGBTQ audiences.

As someone old enough to remember when the prospect of seeing people hump each other on screen was generally considered to be more of a feature of the film-going experience than a bug, I grew bored of social media’s never-ending sex scene discourse long before 2023 began. We all know the reasons why movies aren’t as carnal as they used to be, just as we’re all familiar with the theories about why younger audiences who came of age on the internet might see that as a good thing (e.g. the widespread belief that social isolation and the emergent focus on sexual abuse have made desire seem tantamount to violence). These self-evident truths have been the subject of a million quote-RTs over the last several years, and they will continue to haunt our cursed “For You” tabs until the hellscape formally known as Twitter finally implodes from the...

A24, an entertainment company that is quite popular with fans of both horror and arthouse dramas these days, has just secured a Pay 1 output streaming deal with Warner Bros. Discovery that will see all of their new releases heading to HBO, Max, and Cinemax after their theatrical runs. In addition to this, The Verge reports that A24’s entire existing movie library, a list of over 100 titles, will also be available to watch through HBO, Max, and Cinemax. A24 previously had a similar deal with Showtime.
Royce Battleman, executive vice president of content acquisitions at Wbd, provided the following statement: “Continuing our relationship with A24 to bring award-winning movies alongside recent fan-favorites to subscribers adds incredible value to the HBO and Max value proposition. The diverse range of stories that come from the A24 pipeline make this partnership so impactful for our audience.“

We knew A24 had a decision to make on its streaming ambitions. The indie distributor’s output deal with Showtime, struck in 2019, expired in November, leaving A24’s movies without a dedicated digital home. Free agency can be quite lucrative.
Weeks later, A24 signed with Showtime’s biggest rival, HBO, and its sister streaming service Max. Upgrade.
A December 6 announcement unveiled a multiyear, pay-1 output deal for new A24 theatrical movies to run exclusively on HBO and Cinemax, and stream only on Max. The deal also extended A24’s 2022 licensing agreement with Max for older films, which covered more than two dozen movies.
Some of the newer A24 fare heading to the Warner Bros. Discovery platforms in the pay-1 window include 2023 theatrical releases “Past Lives,” “Dicks: The Musical,” “Priscilla,” “Dream Scenario,” “The Zone of Interest,” “The Iron Claw,” and the restored re-release of Talking Heads concert film “Stop Making Sense.

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is set to dominate the original song race. Oscar voters will likely pick all three contenders from the blockbuster for the original song shortlist: Billie Eilish’s tear-inducing ballad “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s pitiful song of feeling inadequate “I’m Just Ken.”
Mark Ronson and songwriting partner Andrew Wyatt wrote the latter two, while Eilish partnered with brother Finneas on her tune. However, with only two nominations allowed in this category, it will be left to the music branch to decide which two they pick.
Lenny Kravitz eyes a spot on the list with “Road to Freedom,” a song he penned for George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin.” The soulful song’s horns and trombones are key to this composition, which accompanies the film’s end credits.

A24 has confirmed that they’re re-teaming with Halina Reijn, the director of their slasher satire Bodies Bodies Bodies, on a erotic thriller called Babygirl – and an impressive cast has already been assembled for the film. Here’s the line-up: Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos), Antonio Banderas (Desperado), Harris Dickinson (The Iron Claw), Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), and Jean Reno (Léon: The Professional).
According to Deadline, Reijn will be working from a screenplay she wrote herself. The story she crafted for this one centers on a successful CEO who begins an illicit affair with her much younger intern. Given the “thriller” part of the “erotic thriller” description, we have to assume that this affair goes terribly wrong in some way… probably in a way that involves more than just hurt feelings.

The contender to watch this week: “The Killer”
David Fincher‘s latest has divided critics, with The New York Times‘ Manohla Dargis calling it “boring” and NPR’s Justin Chang declaring it “perfectly paced.” But if you think about it, a lot of Fincher’s work has proved at least mildly polarizing. He often overcomes those divides by the time Oscar nominations are announced, yet “The Killer” might be too cold and grim even for a Fincher flick. Michael Fassbender, at his most effortlessly slick, plays a nameless hitman suffering the consequences of a rare botched job. Likely a film that some will find underwhelming due to its lowkey, mostly affectless style, it’s a rather impressive feat of narrative economy that manages to separate itself from the seemingly endless indie horror crop. Megan Thee Stallion is ready to start a new chapter. On Nov. 3, the "Her" rapper returned to music with her first solo single of 2023, "Cobra," which is also her first solo release since 2022's "Traumazine." Megan teased her resurgence on Oct. 12 when she posted a series of graphics on social media that featured a cobra, spelling out "Act One." She then shared the first snippet of her new single on Oct. 23, telling fans over its rock instrumental, "As a snake sheds its skin, we must shed our past, over and over again."
Per a press release shared with Popsugar, Megan's "Cobra" marks a "revitalized chapter in the Houston native's career" for several reasons. For one, the song is the first release under the Grammy-winning rapper's new independent music and entertainment entity, Hot Girl Productions, following her long legal battle with her former label, 1501 Certified Entertainment. Exclusive: Los Angeles-based Premiere Entertainment Group has acquired worldwide rights to romantic comedy Plan B, starring Emmy-award winner Jamie Lee (HBO’s Crashing) and Jon Heder.
Premiere Entertainment will launch worldwide sales of the film at the upcoming American Film Market with all territories currently available.
Directed by first-timer Brandon Tamburri, from an original screenplay by Tamburri and Jean Monpere, Plan B follows the story of Piper, a young woman who, against better judgment, decides to sleep with a successful businessman and tells him he’s the father of her unborn baby after a one-night stand with her awkward neighbor leaves her pregnant.
The Joke Zero and Future Proof Films pic is produced by DJ Dodd, Erika Hampson, and Tamburri. Cast also includes Oscar Nominee Tom Berenger, Shannon Elizabeth, and SAG Award Winner Kate Flannery (NBC’s The Office). Rounding out the ensemble cast are Michael Lombardi (FX’s Rescue Me), Subhah Agarwal (HBO’s Westworld), Daniel K. Isaac (Showtime’s Billions), NFL star Vernon Davis, and Danielle Perez (A24’s Dicks: The Musical).
Full Synopsis reads: After a fun night out, rebellious writer Piper (Jamie Lee) drunkenly sleeps with her awkward neighbor, Evan (Jon Heder), and winds up pregnant. When she attempts to tell Evan the news, Piper quickly realizes that he’s not the long-term guy for her and the baby. After receiving news from publishing exec Jane (Kate Flannery) that her dream of a book deal is coming to fruition, she needs to find a stable relationship – and quick. Going against the advice of her best friend Maya (Subhah Agarwal), Piper opts to keep the pregnancy a secret until she can find a more successful guy to sleep with and hopefully start a family.
After a few failed and comical attempts at finding a match, Piper stumbles into Cameron (Michael Lombardi), a financial advisor and regular at the café she works at. Everything appears to be going as planned as Cameron falls for Piper and is ecstatic about the pregnancy. Cameron introduces Piper to his parents Joe (Tom Berenger) and Diane and fends off advances from his flirty boss Anne (Shannon Elizabeth) along the way. While juggling her double life, Piper continues to bump into her neighbor Evan, who has no idea that he is the father of her soon-to-be-born baby. However, Piper’s evil scheme starts to unravel when she starts second-guessing herself, realizing that she could be making the biggest mistake of her life.
Carlos Rincon, SVP of acquisitions at Premiere Entertainment, negotiated the deal with producer DJ Dodd on behalf of Joke Zero and Future Proof Films.
“This film has been a labor of love for me, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Premiere is the perfect partner for us, and I’m excited to be working with them,” Tamburri said.
DJ Dodd, Owner of Future Proof Films, added: “We are very proud of the film we’ve made through the immense hard work of all of our cast and crew. Making this film has been a fun ride, and we can’t wait to introduce it to the world.”...

They’re impossibly fast and strong. Their skin is pale-white and ice-cold. They travel in pairs and they’re at the epicenter of campy, creepy gay culture. No, we’re not talking about the vampires of “Twilight” or “Dicks: The Musical” writers/stars Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp.
Meet Backpack and Whisper, Aka The Sewer Boys!
Born into this world as a one-off joke from an Upright Citizens Brigade sketch show a decade ago, they’re all grown up and now playing pivotal roles in A24’s gleefully unhinged musical comedy. It’s a genre first for the studio and, though the crusty cuties may remind you of iconic puppets from ‘80s and ‘90s films like “Gremlins” or “Labyrinth,” you’ve never seen anything quite like them on stage or screen before.
“I just remember that it was this big reveal that Josh and Aaron were like, ‘We have to show you the Sewer Boys,...

A24 has become a household name, even among general audiences, because of its penchant for finding unconventional stories that appeal to niche audiences. Many casual moviegoers have been frustrated by the patience required for the more substantial and less generic storytelling typically found within an A24 film, from recent entries like "The Green Knight" back to Jonathan Glazer's "Under the Skin." But when it comes to "Dicks: The Musical," the raunchy R-rated comedy from fresh-faced comedians and collaborators Aaron Jackson & Josh Sharp and "Borat" director/"Seinfeld" executive producer Larry Charles, you pretty much get exactly what has been advertised in the movie's zany trailer.
Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp star in "Dicks: The Musical," which they also wrote the script, lyrics, and book for, based on their own off-off-Broadway stage show that originated at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. Right at the top of the movie, bumper cards inform...

Patti LuPone — the Tony-winning, brassy Broadway legend with a penchant for strong opinions — let everyone know exactly how she feels about Abba and their hit “Mamma Mia!” musical in a new joint interview with Nathan Lane on Wednesdsay.
To hear her tell it on “The A24 Podcast,” LuPone has never even seen “Mamma Mia!” on stage or on film out of protest against the Swedish pop supergroup of 1970s fame.
“I’ve never seen ‘Mamma Mia!’ I’ve never seen any of the movies. Every time their music’s on, I turn it off,” LuPone said, detailing her hatred for the band. “I protest them.”
“How can you hate Abba?” Nathan Lane asked, shocked.
Turns out, it has to do with LuPone love of rock ‘n’ roll from the same era. The pop-dance stylings of members Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad just never sat right with her.

Have you watched the trailer for Dicks: The Musical? Even if you have, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Yes, there are musical numbers, many involving genital discussion, and they even have “Sewer Boys.” From Larry Charles comes a wild little film from A24. Inspired by the talents of Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson, the film also stars the legendary Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally. Both of these pros add a whole lot of crazy to this R-rated musical. Get ready for a whole lot of dick jokes, songs, and a few unmentionables.
I, recently, had an amazing time getting to speak with this insanely funny group. And yes, it was incredible to chat with Larry Charles (Seinfeld). First up it was Charles, Jackson, Sharp, and Bowen Yang. Mr. Yang plays God. It is discussed. And yes, it was kind of fantastic chatting it up with the four of them.
