Finally, some closure.
It was a good mix of light and dark as quite a few hanging storylines rightfully got resolved on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 8 Episode 16.
Also, recapping was artfully woven in throughout. I guess you have to do that with only a couple of episodes in a month and a half. Otherwise, people forget.
The fun part was watching Deeks and Kensi take down the two aging con artists hoping to prey on the residents of a nursing home.
O'Boyle and Ginger, played by Martin Mull and Debra Jo Rupp, seemed to view what they were doing as almost a public service.
O'Boyle: It's not a scam. They bequeath that money to us.
Ginger: These people have no families. Their inheritance just goes to the government.
O'Boyle: I say better us than them.

All of my fantasies about meeting and talking to Anna Karina have been set in France, at her home, under constant worry of arrest, having just knocked on her door without an invitation. I ask her questions and she answers them all with tears in her eyes: "What was it like to act for Jean-Luc Godard, the man you loved, even when you were fighting like cats and dogs, even when he broke your heart? And how, in God's good name, did you manage to create performances that never age, that show no sign of origin, no influence, that absolutely confound me in the best possible way? How did you do it?” These fantasies found nourishment in the assumption that the icon of the French New Wave was fairly reclusive, not wanting to be bothered, certainly not wanting to talk anymore about those films, that time, that man. So imagine...

Above: French grande for Volcano (William Dierterle, Italy, 1950). A few weeks ago, I featured the posters of Anna Karina; now it’s the turn of that other legendary Anna... La Magnani or “La Lupa”, the she-wolf, as she was known. Magnani is currently being fêted at Lincoln Center in an all-celluloid retrospective showing 24 of her films that runs through June 1 before traveling to Chicago, San Francisco, Houston and Columbus.Magnani became a star with her powerhouse performance in Rossellini’s Rome, Open City in 1945, and the indelible image of her chasing down the Nazi soldiers who have taken her resistance-hero husband, is one that seems to have informed her persona throughout her career. No sex-kitten, Magnani was the personification of the great actress, and in her posters she is almost always emoting. She is rarely shown smiling (look at her scowling at Ingrid Bergman—in real life she had good...

Since any New York cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

I know just how hagiographic it sounds when I say, and nevertheless say with full sincerity, that being in Anna Karina’s presence is sort of a shocking thing. The French New Wave’s feminine icon — perhaps the screen icon of ‘60s cinema, period, at least if her recent immortalization in innumerable GIFs could count for anything — has often seemed inscrutable: as quick-witted as she is goofy, as likely to indulge in cartoonish physical gestures as she is to display her preternatural beauty, and always hiding something behind the eyes. With that perception established, you might understand why, as she walked down the steps of BAMcinématek’s theater 3 for a Q & A following Jean-Luc Godard’s A Woman Is a Woman, the seemingly innocuous figure almost immediately elicited this thought from myself and, I’d imagine, several others: “Holy shit — that’s Anna Karina.”
That feeling will soon dissipate — not...

Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Mauvais sang is playing April 2 - May 1 and Mr. X, a Vision of Leos Carax April 3 - May 3, 2016 in the United States. When lighting cigarettes, characters in Mauvais sang (1986) never shield the flame from wind. The smoke doesn't dissipate, but slithers away in tendrils. The air hangs, heated by an overpassing Halley's Comet that turns the cobblestone streets into a fire-walk. The male characters conduct their business shirtless, sometimes wrestling with a homoeroticism more Greek than closeted. A city-wide suicide spree, exacerbated but maybe not caused by the AIDS-like retrovirus "Stbo", leaves alive only thieves, fare-hoppers, vandals, gangsters. They inhabit Jean-Pierre Melville's exsanguinated Paris, designed as a hermetic MGM backlot. Red leaks down the walls. Holed up in an old butcher's shop, three thieves plan their last big score: stealing a serum to Stbo. The money will allow...

As it turns out, there is such a thing as too much Dancing With the Stars, as evidenced by Tuesday’s episode.
Unlike most Tuesday installments of the ABC reality staple, this particular broadcast wasn’t just a wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am results show. Rather, it was another 120 minutes of “Hometown Glory”-inspired routines, which seemed to leave the contestants, the judges and even the hosts utterly exhausted.
If you’d like to play a retroactive drinking game for Tuesday’s two-hour show, feel free to take a sip anytime: (1) the judges are reminded that each couple had to practice two dances...

We were only five minutes in to the new series of First Dates when we cringed so audibly that someone passing by asked us if we were okay. And we weren't, because it was so horrendously awkward. But also, we were, because we were watching First Dates.
The moment that had induced such "oh dear God no" in us was simple: Liam asked his date Anna how old she was, only to say that he'd thought she was much older. And instead of backing out quickly at her shocked face, he only dug further, offering a specific age he had in mind: four years older than she actually was. Dear God, man.
But the good thing about First Dates is that it gives us all hope. So Liam could make the age snafu, and he could commit the crime of ordering his steak medium to well done, and he could...

30. The Lovers on the Bridge (1991)
Directed by: Leos Carax
A romance the way only Leos Caraz could do it. “The Lovers on the Bridge” is a love story between an alcoholic, drug-addicted street performer named Alex (Denis Lavant) and a vagrant painter named Michele (Juliette Binoche) who lives on the streets after a previous relationship ended. She now suffers from an unkown disease that is slowly making her blind. The two live on the Pont Neuf, the oldest bridge in Paris, closed for repairs for the duration of the film. As Michele loses more and more of her sight, she has to depend on Alex to get her through the days. After a treatment is discovered, Michele’s parents try to find her using posters on the street and radio announcements. Alex, realizing that her health would remover her dependence upon him, does everything in his power to keep Michele...

Ida director Pawel Pawlikowski on Jean-Luc Godard: "Some of the freedom I took with the continuity, which is trying to shoot the film in tableaux…" Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze

Soldate Jeanette
Directed by Daniel Hoesl
Austria, 2013
“The rich man may fall for a stock exchange ruse, but the poor man’s got nothing to lose.” In case you hadn’t gathered the sentiment of Soldate Jeanette around two-thirds of the way into its brisk 80-minute runtime, the man strumming his guitar at the dinner table says what everyone’s thinking, through his musical praise of a slender existence. The meal takes place at a farm, where former financial high-flyer Fanni (Johanna Orsini-Rosenberg) has escaped to start a new life, away from the hollow boardrooms and into the tangled textures of the forest, surrounded by beings with a detectable pulse, from humans to barnyard critters. Her last remaining wads of cash can be found in the nearby thicket, burnt to a crisp atop a bonfire.

"Dancing with the Stars" Season 16 is full of twists and there's an interesting on in week 5 -- each couple will have an extra pro dancer join in on the dance floor. This will probably help some couples. Others may still struggle. We have all of the dances and scores as they happen in this live blog.
Although some networks (most notably NBC) have pre-empted some scheduled TV, ABC decided to air its live "DWTS." Viewers probably need a break from coverage of the Boston Marathon explosions earlier in the day. Before there was any dancing, however, Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke-Charvet addressed the news. Barring major updates, it should all be dancing from here on.
In a cool intro, the stars and pros all entered the stage as part of a group dance. Nice variation on the stairs there.

GeekTyrant will once again be excitedly attending the Sundance Film Festival in 2013! They've released their full line up of competition films for the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary, as well as the out-of-competition Next <=> section.
It looks like there's a lot of great films for us, and anyone who is attending, to check out this year. I love going up to Sundance, it's always a great mix of different movies... some great, some good, some bad, and some that are completely awful. I'm always looking forward to seeing them though! There's kind of rush going in to watch a movie I hardly know anything about. It's a rare thing for me these days to be able to do that.
Below you'll find the full Press Release that includes all of the films that have been announced. Please look them over and let us know which ones interest...

Sixteen films are set to compete in the dramatic category at next year's Sundance Film Festival in January, with exactly half of those films directed by women - a new record for the festival which will be in its 29th year.
Approximately 113 feature-length films representing 32 countries were selected for Sundance for next year including 27 films in competition and 51 films from first-time directors. Many of the key categories were announced today.
While the Utah-based film festival only occasionally showcases films that have true mainstream crossover potential, this year sees more audience friendly fare in competition even it is still specifically targeting the art house crowd.
The fest in January this year was dominated by the rave reviews for its Grand Jury Prize winner "Beasts of the Southern Wild" which, upon moving to a more mainstream release, scored many accolades but just $13 million in worldwide box-office.

If you ever managed to see Shane Carruth‘s Primer, you’re probably a very confused person. That’s to say, the 2004 time-travel flick strove to be as realistic as possible, and by realistic, we mean completely mind-boggling. Saying that, Primer remains one of the most intriguing movies of the past decade (even if we still can’t figure it out), which means that the promise of a second movie from writer/director Curruth is something to be excited about.
Though it was rumored that the poor guy couldn’t get funding sorted for a second feature, it appears he finally got it made: Upstream Color will premier at Sundance 2013, presumably to grant everybody another headache with a bizarre-sounding story about two people who become a single organism.

Mostly populated by unknowns filmakers (at least to us), among the dozen titles in Sundance’s World Dramatic Comp we do find some familair auteurs such as Sean Ellis’ (from Cashback fame) who returns with Metro Manila, we have Srdan Golubovic’s Circles (see still above – a drama we thought might end up playing in Cannes earlier this year) and finally, Sebastián Silva whose latest Crystal Fairy (not to be confused with Magic Magic which also stars Michael Cera) will open the fest. Here are the twelve selections of which eleven are world preems.
Circles / Serbia, Germany, France, Croatia, Slovenia (Director: Srdan Golubovic, Screenwriters: Srdjan Koljevic, Melina Pota Koljevic) — Five people are affected by a tragic heroic act. Twenty years later, all of them will confront the past through their own crises. Will they overcome guilt, frustration and their urge for revenge? Will they do the right thing, at all costs?...

We are down to 12 Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars, with Pamela Anderson sent home last week from a bottom three that also included Bristol Palin, and, shockingly, Drew Lachey. Will Bristol and Drew be staring down the elimination gun once again, and who will will join them in the bottom three this week? What I want to know is can either of them manage to elevate their technique this week and defy the odds? Let's get on with the Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars Recap!
Before we get started, let's look at the scoring from last week one more time. It seems like at this phase of the contest scores don't matter at all. On last week's Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars, for instance it was Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy that were in the bottom three score wise, but not in the bottom three of the viewer's votes.

I meet Aaron Taylor-Johnson in a drably functional dressing room at Pinewood Studios at the end of his working day. Wearing a grimy grey sweatshirt and matching baggy shorts, he looks more like a skateboarder than a film star. He has just finished filming some action sequences for Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall, in which he reprises his role as Dave Lizewski, real-life superhero, in the sequel to the Matthew Vaughn-directed cult movie Kick-Ass. "I'm sorry I'm so grubby," he says, reaching for a towel. "I've just spent the day being thrown about a lot.

Christopher Andersen's biography of Mick Jagger is little more than an anthology of juicy gossip
Photographer Cecil Beaton knew where Mick Jagger's power resided. "The mouth is almost too large," he wrote. "He is beautiful and ugly, feminine and masculine. A rare phenomenon." In that mouth, granted pop-art immortality by John Pasche's Rolling Stones logo, you see Jagger's voracious, infectious appetite. Although he briefly delighted the left with a spasm of '68 radicalism during which he declared, unbelievably, that "there should be no such thing as private property", he had no real affinity for the utopian side of the 60s. He embodied instead the pushy, hard-charging aspect that said that the time for waiting was over and the time for taking was here. His raw desire had a certain brutal purity, and this Pe teacher's son combined it with a muscular discipline that ensured the band's improbable longevity. As...

Things had been fairly quiet on the Anna Karenina front for some time, and this week has seen a brilliant influx for those of us eagerly anticipating the adaptation.
Wednesday saw the release of the lovely first trailer and poster, promising a beautiful take on Leo Tolstoy’s original novel, with Keira Knightley looking fantastic in the lead.
And now a second beautiful poster has made its way online, similar to the first one we saw this week, but now in a quad poster form.
The scene is largely the same, but you’ll notice that the backdrop here now reads ‘Anna’, rather than her initials, ‘Ak’; and in the background are visible moments from the film – a duel at the far right, for example.
“The third collaboration of Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley with director Joe Wright, following the award-winning box office successes “Pride & Prejudice” and “Atonement,” is the epic love story “Anna Karenina,...

The U.S. Northeast experienced record-breaking heat Monday. The “Dancing with the Stars” ballroom hopes the sizzle stretches to Southern California for Latin Week.
The remaining nine couples look to bring hotness to the dance floor with Argentine tangos, salsas and sambas. More clothing comes off, though not Gavin DeGraw’s hat. On paper, this week should bring the Cuban, William Levy, back toward the top of the leaderboard, but he injured his right ankle over the weekend and needed an Mri.

Dancing with the Stars Week 3: Crying with the Stars! Plus, Jaleel White's Breakdown
If you tuned in to Dancing with the Stars, you may have used a lot of Kleenex. It was personal story night, and the tears were flowing on both sides of the camera. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as we watched most of the contestants cry during their rehearsal footage and then in the skybox during the scoring. It was a miracle they made it through their dances. The upside for the crying stars was being in tears meant they couldn’t answer Brooke Burke Charvet’s silly questions.
Katherine Jenkins is in first place with 29, while there is five way tie for last place. The dancing was exceptional all around; reminiscent of the season premiere. Everyone gave nearly spot on performances. Only William Levy and Cheryl Burke had a very...

Dancing with the Stars Week 2: A Night of Chaos
Dancing with the Stars Season 14 returned for Week 2 and yes, showed us that last week was nothing but a dream. What was bestowed on us tonight was nothing short of a nightmare. There were mishaps, the judges were all over the place, Len Goodman was insane, some song choices were horrible and the show even aired the wrong voting numbers for one couple! Dancing with the Stars could have changed its name to Dancing with the Chaos.
All started well when Roshon Fegan gave another stellar performance, this time mastering a quickstep which earned him two 9s. This boy has some serious skills. We may be looking at a finalist here. Len was happy and commended Roshon appropriately.
Then the trouble started. Sherri Shepherd gave what should have been a brilliant jive but she “missed a pass.” It was very apparent on camera,...

By the time I made it halfway through the "Dancing With the Stars" Season 14 premiere, I realized that this season, the scores are absolutely pointless.
The judges -- Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli -- all praised this year's contestants for having the best "Dancing With the Stars" debut on record, but were the stars really that good? Or is it finally time for new judges?
I'm thinking it's the latter. I still can't believe that not one celebrity received a total score less than 20. That's just ridiculous, especially since there were more than a few stars that deserved it (ahem, Gavin DeGraw, Melissa Gilbert and Martina Navratilova).
Tom Bergeron -- the true Mvp of the night -- mentioned that during rehearsals, each pair is critiqued by a group of stand-in judges and that Len, Carrie Ann and Bruno only come to play for the live shows. Maybe...

Dancing with the Stars Season 14 Week 1 Rankings - The Hottest Package of the Season
Season 14 of Dancing with the Stars is underway and the competition is nothing short of fierce. There was so much potential on the ballroom floor, this could be the best season yet! Everyone danced really well, but there was some amazing talent that will definitely make for a very tough season. Tough on the contestants, but enjoyable for diehard fans. Host Tom Bergeron even labeled this premiere the best in the history of Dancing with the Stars.
British opera star Katherine Jenkins and the actor behind America’s most loveable TV character Urkel, Jaleel White, tied for first place with a 26, one of the highest scores ever in a Dancing with the Stars season premiere. But, there was one break out star of the night and I think, of the season, and that is Telenova and JLo video star William Levy.

Skeletons, she-devils, and werewolves populated the ballroom on this week’s Dancing With the Stars, along with a robot cohost that, possibly experiencing a sugar rush from a “fun-size” Halloween candy, briefly strayed from her cue cards in a moment of giddy awkwardness. Thank heavens for emcee Tom Booo-geron, who presided over the festivities with the kind of campy glee that was absent for too much of the 90-minute telecast.

Giallo wannabe Faces in the Crowd stars Milla Jovovich – for once taking a break from either a) killing zombies and b) working with her husband – as Anna Marchant, a woman who witnesses a murder by the serial killer dubbed Tearjerker Jack. When Jack turns on Anna she manages to escape by falling off a bridge and banging her head – an injury which causes her to come down with a case of prosopagnosia, aka ”face-blindness.” Which means Anna cannot recognise her attacker, her husband, her friends, or anyone else for that matter, thanks to her new found inability to remember or identify faces…

I’ve always harbored a secret dream of seeing SuperNanny Jo Frost cast on Dancing With the Stars, but never moreso than during this week’s blowout battle between Maksim Chmerkovskiy and our maddening panel of judges. The thing is, though, I’m not sure who was more in need of some stern British discipline.

Entertainer, yes. Dancer, no.
Despite being one of the more-beloved contestants on “Dancing with the Stars,” a lack of ability was too much for Carson Kressley to overcome, and he and Anna Trebunskaya became the fifth couple eliminated this season.
Carson provided plenty of laughs – please, ABC, create a role for him as, say, wardrobe consultant! – and many memorable images (cartwheel, pirate, Jagger stylings). However, he went for pizzazz more than technique, especially the last two weeks.

Tonight, “Dancing with the Stars” transports us to the movies, with interpretations of famous film scores through tangos, foxtrots, paso dobles and a Viennese waltz. (It seems even “DWTS” couldn’t find a way to celebrate Columbus Day.) The audience features an Academy Award-winning Best Actress: Cher. How many times will producers flash to Chaz Bono’s mother? My guess: 15.

The Dancing with the Stars Season 13 cast is almost ready for prime-time, and we have a few new pros, some questionable “stars” and some unconventional pairings. In a new but not so surprising twist, they have bumped up three members of last season’s The Troupe to become front and center pros. Who didn't see that coming? Aside from our beloved long time pros getting tired and needing help with the pro dance segments, this is an opportunity for the show to break in new, younger blood to keep it fresh.
DWTS is sticking with their tried and true formula of athletes, singers, actors, talk show hosts, a controversial celebrity and the token “who?” cast member. And of course, within this group of “stars” is at least one season train wreck. Let’s break down the cast and dish on this a bit.
