Films from notables Nick Cave, Kevin Smith and Terry Gilliam, and another featuring Downton Abbey vet Dan Stevens are helping fill this weekend’s box office, despite studio blockbuster debuts for The Maze Runner and This Is Where I Leave You.
In all, 14 specialty films are debuting this weekend, at the front edge of awards season and the time of year when “serious” films hit the screens left and right. We have The Guest, with Stevens; The Zero Theorem by Gilliam; Smith’s Tusk; Tracks, the latest from the producers of The King’s Speech; and Cave’s doc 20,000 Days On Earth.
And, like a TV informercial, there’s more: the doc Pump, boundary-jumper Stop The Pounding Heart; and Swim Little Fish Swim. Just to fill out the marquees, we also have Tribeca-winning doc Keep On Keepin’ On; Flamenco, Flamenco; Hector And The Search For Happiness; Iceman; Hollidaysburg; and Not Cool.

Tracks sounds like a slog, the true story of Robyn Davidson (Mia Wasikowska) as she treks 1,700 miles across the Australian desert with four capricious camels and a black dog named Diggity. The journey, which spawned an article for National Geographic and a global bestseller, begins in April 1977 and lasts for nine arduous months. But hold on. The movie, which lasts a scant 112 minutes, is no mission for masochists. Tracks is an exhilarating adventure that opens up an unknown world to most of us and does it so well that we feel we're living it too.

John Curran's astute and tender Tracks stars Mia Wasikowska as Robyn Davidson with Adam Driver as photographer Rick Smolan and Rainer Bock as camel rancher Kurt Posel. Bock miraculously combines his roles in Michael Haneke's The White Ribbon, Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and Christian Petzold's Dreileben: Beats Being Dead and Barbara, into an Outback brute able to compete in attention with the growling beasts.
In New York, Curran and I discussed Wasikowska coming to him after Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive "in a state she needed to work through", an unrealised F Scott Fitzgerald's The Beautiful And The Damned project with Keira Knightley, The Wizard Of Oz, Stardust Memories, basic survival and basic relationships.

★★★★☆Tracks (2013), The Painted Veil director John Curran's award-winning outback drama starring Mia Wasikowska (Lawless, Stoker), tells the true story of Robyn Davidson, a young woman who in 1977 trekked across almost 2000 miles of treacherous Australian desert with only four temperamental camels and her loyal dog for company. Adapted from Davidson's bestselling book, Marion Nelson's screen adaptation opens with Robyn attempting to find work training feral camels. Her plan is to earn her own dromedaries for the trip. She also needs to be financed and this comes in the form of a deal with National Geographic Magazine who agree to fund Davidson's trek in return for exclusive pictures.

It is frequently argued that being a teenager is an awkward period in one’s life. The transition from child to adulthood brings with it a series of challenging physical, emotional and psychological transformations. That said, there exists what can be an equally challenging episode, one not so removed from the adventurous teenage years: being a twentysomething. After high school and university stands the first chapter in the rest of one’s entire life. What job is best? When will one marry? What does one want to do for the next few decades to earn a living, to fulfill one’s self and become a functioning human being? Famous Aussie adventurer Robyn Davidson struggled mightily with such weighty queries when she was 27 in 1977.

Romantic in the grandest sense, a visceral and hypnotic experience of idealistic aspirations set against the desolate beauty and danger of the Outback. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for stories about women doing adventurous things

Robyn Davidson's nine-month, 1,700 mile trek across the blazing hot deserts of Australia gets the big screen treatment in John Curran's Tracks, a film that sidelines big chest-beating emotions in favour of a low-key adventure tale.
In earlier incarnations director Sydney Pollack and Julia Roberts swirled around Davidson's best-selling memoir, but you can almost hear the Academy Awards cogs turning with headline Hollywood talent involved.
The Painted Veil's Curran, working from a script by Marion Nelson, instead pares back the story to its bare essentials, following Mia Wasikowska's determined Robyn throughout her journey while judiciously dropping in flashbacks to childhood trauma. It's this distressing moment that's underlined as the reason why Robyn chooses to reject people and head off into the sun-scorched wilderness with only four camels...

Though Venice Film Festival favorite "Tracks" won't be hitting theaters until May 23, get a taste of the wilds of the outback with a new poster for the film starring Mia Wasikowska and Adam Driver. Directed by John Curran ("The Painted Veil"), West Coasters can catch "Tracks" at the San Francisco International Film Festival later this month. (Poster below.) Written by Marion Nelson from Robyn Davidson's autobiographical book, "Tracks" stars Wasikowska as Davidson herself, a bona fide trailblazer who in 1977 at age 27 schlepped 1700 miles across the Australian desert with four camels and a dog. Adam Driver of "Girls" costars as National Geographic photographer Rick Smolan, who documented Davidson's journey. The sublime 24-year-old Mia Wasikowska has a great year ahead, with Jim Jarmusch's bloody good "Only Lovers Left Alive" opening next week, Richard Ayoade's "The Double" hitting in May, and David Cronenberg's "Maps to the Stars" wrapping up -- and potentially appearing at.

One of the young actresses who has seen her star rise in Hollywood over the past few years is Mia Wasikowska. With roles in movies such as The Kids are All Right, Jane Eyre, Lawless, and Stoker, as well as the tv show In Treatment, her presence in a project increases its interest. It was no different with her newest feature, titled Tracks. The film is directed by John Curran, and the screenplay is adapted by Marion Nelson from a book by Robyn Davidson. Wasikowska stars onscreen alongside Adam Driver, Emma Booth, and Jessica Tovey, and a new trailer for the film has now been released. The trailer can be seen below.

Director John Curran’s Tracks had solid showings at both Telluride and Venice film festivals, and with The Weinstein Company having snagged the epic Aussie adventure for Us distribution rights, a theatrical drop date should be forthcoming. For now, we at least get our first look in a new trailer. The movie is adapted from Robyn Davidson’s autobiography of the same name, telling the story of her solo trek through almost two thousand miles of Australian desert, from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean. With only the companionship of four camels and her dog, Diggity, during her adventure she met the unique folk you’d only find making a home of the desert and also, eventually, National Geographic photographer Rick Smolan, who documented her journey. Screenwriter Marion Nelson handled screen adaptation duties. Tracks has had a strangely long gestation period, as talks of now 47-year-old Julia Roberts portraying Davidson, who...

The latest trailer for director John Curran's "Tracks," about a young woman's treacherous journey across the wilds of the West Australian desert and starring the sublime Mia Wasikowska, has landed. Release date via distributor The Weinstein Company forthcoming. A hit at Venice and Telluride, this is Curran's first film since the tepid thriller "Stone" (2010). Before that, he directed the lush weepie "The Painted Veil" (2006) and the elegant adultery drama "We Don't Live Here Anymore" (2004). Written by Marion Nelson from Robyn Davidson's autobiographical book, "Tracks" costars Adam Driver (eep!). Julia Roberts was originally circling the role of Davidson, 27 at the time of the film's events, until Wasikowska nabbed it. Here's our Venice review of the film. Trailer below via Yahoo! Movies. It's a tad overdramatic, given the triumphant indie soundtrack, but see for yourself.

Robyn (Mia Wasikowska) spends two hardscrabble years in the Alice Springs area learning how to train and care for camels (feral herds of which number in the thousands in Western Australia) in order to prepare for her journey. Finally ready to embark with her animals, she realizes she is woefully underfunded and, despite her desires for self-sufficiency, accepts a fee from National Geographic in exchange for a written piece. Mia Wasikowska and Adam Driver are two of the most fascinating young actors working right now, and both have HBO to credit for their success. Wasikowska burst into the spotlight with Alice in Wonderland but had already gotten rave reviews for her striking turn on In Treatment, as suicidal gymnast Sophie. What a beautiful, beautiful film. That's the best way to put it. And that's the first thought that came to mind and stayed at the forefront of my thoughts while I was watching. The film Tracks, directed by John Curran, and follows the real-life story of Australian naturalist Robyn Davidson, who crossed 1,700 miles of the Australia Outback by foot by herself in 1977. Her journey was documented and published in National Geographic and this film gives us a dramatic recreation of it, following Robyn and her sunburned trip with three camels. Watch it is like floating through a beautiful dream journeying across the Australian Outback. Curran's Tracks, from a screenplay by Marion Nelson, stars the wonderfully talented Mia Wasikowska as Robyn Davidson, who was 27 at the time she decided to cross the outback. The film opens spending some time with her as she figures out her plans and decides to take the journey,...

Tracks, the true story of Robyn Davidson.s 2,700 km trek across the outback with four camels and her dog Diggity, will have its Australian premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival in October.
