Charlie Collier, after more than two decades in broadcasting and cable TV, has jumped ship from the traditional television biz — betting that TV’s future is all about streaming.
As first reported by Variety, Collier is leaving his post as CEO of Fox Entertainment, departing from the Murdochs’ fiefdom to head up Roku Media, where he’ll oversee content and ad sales for the Roku Channel starting next month.
For Roku, recruiting the high-profile TV exec who brought such hits as “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad” and “The Walking Dead” to the small screen can be viewed as a shift toward more strategic — rather than tactical — spending on original content. Not incidentally, Collier also is familiar with the content economics of the free-streaming space: Fox Corp. spent 440 million to buy Tubi in 2020, which has served as a monetization outlet for Fox TV programming.
The move signals that Roku plans to spend more on original content.

The 2022 Daytime Creative Arts & Lifestyle Emmy Awards took place on Saturday, June 18, at the Pasadena Convention Center, with big winners including syndicated talkers “The Kelly Clarkson Show” and “The Drew Barrymore Show,” as well as CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” and Netflix’s “Penguin Town.”
“Kelly Clarkson” picked up five awards, while “Penguin Town” was next, with three. Beyond syndication (with 10), Netflix was the big single network winner, picking up nine total, spread out among “Penguin Town,” “Cat People,” “Headspace: Guide to Meditation” and “You vs. Wild: Out Cold.” CBS and PBS tied next, with three each.
Also of note, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show’s” final season landed a Daytime Emmy for outstanding writing team for a daytime non-fiction program. And in its first season, Judge Judy Sheindlin’s new series “Judy Justice,” for IMDbTV (now Amazon Freevee) won for legal/courtroom program. (It also repped the first-ever Daytime Emmy for IMDbTV/Freevee.

“Weird Al” Yankovic has won five Grammys, sang countless parodies, and now penned his own biopic starring Daniel Radcliffe for the Roku Channel.
In a new teaser trailer for “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” Radcliffe belts “Like a Surgeon,” a riff on Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” and swigs whiskey onstage. The shirtless (and ripped) Radcliffe already made headlines for his transformation into Weird Al, complete with a mullet and Hawaiian attire. The first look images made (curly-haired) waves with Radcliffe’s campy take on Weird Al’s unprecedented style.
“Anyone got an accordion?” Radcliffe as Weird Al says in the teaser.
Roku Original “Weird” will dive into the “untold true story” of the famed parody rockstar. Eric Appel serves as director and co-wrote the film with Yankovic himself. Both also executive produce.
Produced by Funny or Die and Tango, “Weird” began filming in February 2022. The official description for the...

Daniel Radcliffe inhabits the frizzy-haired, mustachioed persona of “Weird Al” Yankovic in the new teaser trailer for the Roku original film about the parody artist, which is coming to the platform’s free streaming channel this fall.
Roku released the teaser for “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” produced by Funny Or Die and Tango, at its 2022 NewFronts presentation Tuesday. Yankovic co-wrote the film’s script with Eric Appel, who is also directing. The movie will stream on the Roku Channel this fall, with no release date set yet.
“Anyone got an accordion?” Radcliffe as Yankovic says dramatically in the trailer (watch below).
The teaser also shows the “Harry Potter” star bare-chested on stage taking a swig from a bottle of… something, and then spitting it into the air.
The movie is billed as a “untold true story” of Yankovic, documenting “Weird Al’s” rise to fame with early hits like...

Roku welcomed three food luminaries to its NewFronts presentation, announcing new original series with Martha Stewart, Emeril Lagasse and Milk Street Studios’ Christopher Kimball.
Stewart served as the host for the food initiative, delivering brief remarks and introducing her three series before bringing her “foodie friends” Lagasse and Kimball onstage.
Four decades after publishing her first cookbook in 1982, Stewart said she now makes content “for every screen imaginable.” In addition to Stewart’s three series, Lagasse and Kimball will each shepherd two. (Read full descriptions below.)
The shows will all stream on the Roku Channel, which is a gateway for a host of streaming options, including library fare, live channels and a growing roster of originals. Last week, Roku announced that the 5-year-old Roku Channel now has reach to households with 80 million people and is a Top 5 streaming channel among its 61.2 million active account holders.

November can be a slow month for streaming services. Amazon, however, is entering into 2020’s penultimate month with some steam.
Amazon is really beefing up its TV library in November 2020. Both Community (which arrives on Nov. 8) and Scrubs (Nov. 14) will be added to Amazon Prime this month and in the process complete the streaming trifecta: Netflix, Amazon, Hulu. That’s pretty impressive stuff for both shows. And then on the film side of things, November 1 sees the arrival of The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Twilight, and the Underworld franchise. Somebody didn’t tell Amazon Spooky Season was over and bless them for it.
As for the originals, Alex Rider is the most intriguing TV series here. That is based on the British spy novel series and premieres on Nov. 13 on IMDb TV (which is available to all Prime subscribers). That will be followed by Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series on Nov.

I’m always skeptical about television shows that aim to teach people how to cook a dish by following along with their TV sets, and the reasons for that skepticism only multiply when you’re watching it on DVD. At least when a program is airing off a cable or network channel on television it’s believable that someone has a TV in their kitchen and is following along with the steps while standing in front of the stove. A number of problems arise though, because usually the on-screen chef will have a number of ingredients already prepped or will jump ahead to the finished product while the at-home chef is still struggling to get the dish in the oven. When it’s on DVD however, you have to wonder how many people have a TV with a DVD player in their kitchen. Even if that’s not the point,...

Warning: We are about to alert you to a new food choice that could take down the entire bacon-worshiping Internet. This new creation comes to you courtesy of 'Today' (weekdays, 7Am on NBC) and Chris Kimball of 'America's Test Kitchen,' and it is called "bacon paste." Yes, bacon paste was just one ingredient in Kimball's chicken kebab recipe, but we can see it taking off in a way that will make chocolate chip cookie dough look like small potatoes.
"Now this is hot," said Kimball. "This is trending." Kimball and Matt Lauer made the paste for the chicken kebabs, to be mixed with some spices and used to marinate the chicken, using two pieces of bacon in a blender. "This is not that much fat," said Kimball. "For some people, it's just a little hors 'devour. And we run that for about forty-five seconds.

Long, long ago. Before The Barefoot Contessa had us dreaming of living in an amazing house on Long Island with lots of trendy gay friends and a financier husband who only comes home on Fridays to eat roast chicken; before Nigella Lawson invented gastroporn to lure straight men into the cooking channel web; and even before Julia Child would famously flip omelettes onto the floor of a PBS studio, there was the mother of them all: Fannie Farmer. In 1896, Fannie Farmer published The Boston Cooking School Cookbook which became an instant best-seller and the definitive reference for any well-to-do housewife in the Us (the less-well-to-do just ate potatoes and therefore needed no recipes beyond "boil water; add salt").
In the PBS special, "Fannie's Last Supper," the people behind "America's Test Kitchen" recreate a twelve-course meal for twelve from Fannie's 1896 book preparing the recipes using ingredients and methods available at the time.
