Hollywood is targeting local language production more than ever as studios and independent finance and production players align themselves with international partners.
Last week’s announcement that Fox International Productions head Sanford Panitch was departing for Sony sent shockwaves through the industry.
Panitch (pictured) is the undisputed king of the local language business and ruled over a thriving division that has reaped bountiful rewards since he launched it in 2008.
His new job in charge of international film and television at Sony starts on June 2. It signals a mandate to expand the studio’s global film platform by chairman of the motion picture group Tom Rothman, for whom Panitch worked in the Fox fold for many years.
For its part Fox shows no desire to abandon course. It is understood Stacey Snider and Jim Gianopulos are scouting for replacements and respected executive Michael Andreen, who enjoys strong ties with China, will oversee things in the interregnum.

Walk of Shame finally gets a release date, and will hit theaters and VOD on May 2nd. The Elizabeth Banks screwball comedy about the night that got away, which conveniently precedes the most important day of her life. The perfect film to label itself “outrageous,” this one has slight hints that there is more going on, but the trailer doesn’t seem too sure about giving those bits away.
We’re led to believe that we are very far into silly here, but the supporting cast makes you wonder if that can be completely true.

The film written by Dave Weasel and Noah Haidle, opens in theaters on February 1st. Tom Rosenberg, Jim Tauber and Sidney Kimmel produce. This latest poster's not bad, but not as good as the first one, or the Mexican poster we added recently. Also in the cast are Mark Margolis, Katheryn Winnick, Vanessa Ferlito, Addison Tilmlin, Bill Burr, Rich Gomez and Weronika Rosati. Val (Pacino) is released from prison after serving twenty-eight years for refusing to give up one of his close criminal associates. His best friend Doc (Walken) is there to pick him up, and the two soon reteam with another old pal, Hirsch (Arkin). Their bond is as strong as ever, and the three reflect on freedom lost and gained, loyalties ebbed and flowed, and days of glory gone by.

With the recent success of action films targeted at an older demographic, Lionsgate has decided to get in on the fun. The studio has finally scheduled a release date for its next film, which will follow in the footsteps of Summit Entertainment’s 2010 hit, Red.
Starring Academy Award winners Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, and Alan Arkin, Stand Up Guys is currently in production and tells the story of three ”retired gangsters who reunite for one epic night.”
If numbers from The Expendables 2, which features action heroes that might be considered “past their prime,” are any indication of box office trends, then I have no doubt that Stand Up Guys will be a success.
Although it might miss out on the attention from younger generations, the actors involved have enough clout to nab the interest of a wide array of moviegoers nonetheless.
With Red 2 on its way from virtually the same studio,...

As he’s currently shooting the Al Pacino, Alan Arkin, and Christopher Walken buddy comedy Stand Up Guys, a press release announces that Fisher Stevens — who, just a few years back, won an Oscar for producing the acclaimed documentary The Cove — will next helm an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel American Pastoral, which Lakeshore and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment are producing.
Originally written by Philip Roth — and adapted by John Romano (The Lincoln Lawyer) — the ’60s-set story follows Seymour “the Swede” Levov, an idealistic American do-gooder whose family is torn apart when his daughter, a rebellious girl, is arrested for illegal acts in protest of the Vietnam War. The moral quandaries created here sound right in line with Stevens‘ documentary, Crazy Love, or first narrative, Just a Kiss — and it’s in a period I’m wholly fascinated with, to boot. Let’s hope this one comes together with the right team.
