Hunter Page-Lochard in Les Norton (Photo credit: Tony Mott).
Hunter Page-Lochard has a ready answer when people ask why he speaks with an Ocker accent as Billy Dunne, the former pro boxer turned Kings Cross casino doorman in the ABC’s Les Norton.
While he is proud of his Aboriginal and American heritage, he says: “I don’t want to be labelled as an Indigenous character. I want to fit in the group of the people that I’m appearing with.”
From his first day on the set of the Roadshow Rough Diamond crime caper with Alexander Bertrand, Justin Rosniak and Steve Le Marquand, he sensed this show was going to be special.
“We found our groove and our characters by watching and flowing off each other,” he tells If. “As someone who had never done comedy before, I needed that confidence. Once we got together it was like, ‘Oh my God,...

Fadia Abboud with Hunter Page-Lochard and Alexander Bertrand on the ‘Les Norton’ set (Photo: Tony Mott).
For someone who for years had no aspirations to become a filmmaker, Fadia Abboud’s career has rocketed.
After co-directing an episode of Here Come the Habibs! with Darren Ashton, she landed her first TV drama gig on Australian Gangster, Roadshow Rough Diamond’s miniseries for the Seven Network.
From there she segued to directing three episodes of the same producers’ comedy-drama Les Norton starring Alexander Bertrand, David Wenham, Rebel Wilson, Justin Rosniak and Pallavi Sharda, for the ABC.
When Roadshow Rough Diamond’s John Edwards and Dan Edwards were setting up Australian Gangster with the creator Gregor Jordan, they realised Jordan would not be able to direct all four episodes of the saga which stars Bertrand as a Sydney criminal.

Alexander Bertrand in ‘Les Norton.’
After landing his first lead role in Roadshow Rough Diamond’s Australian Gangster, Alexander Bertrand set his sights on playing the title character in the same production house’s Les Norton.
That was no sure thing: Despite his performance as the Sydney crime figure in the upcoming Seven Network drama, the actor had to fight hard to win the Norton role in the ABC series based on Robert G. Barrett’s Australian novels set in the 1980s.
“There were five or six people up for the role, including a couple of heavyweight Hollywood names,” he tells If. “I had to do a couple of call backs.”
Jocelyn Moorhouse, who co-directed the 10-part series with Fadia Abboud, David Caesar and Morgan O’Neill, loved Australian Gangster and championed his cause.
“Jocelyn told me she put on the brass knuckles and went into bat for me,” he says.

Screen Australia says it has not mismanaged its finances by spending its annual production funding in just six months - a state of affairs which it says reflects the strength of the local film industry.
The government screen agency revealed in mid-December 2012 that it had spent its entire annual $42 million drama production allocation due to the unprecedented number of quality feature film and television projects seeking support. The shock announcement was reminiscent of the agency's abrupt decision to cut its investment cap in 2009 while several films were mid-financed. That decision.threw several major Australian productions into dissaray including The Tree and the biggest box office hit of.2010, Tomorrow When the War Began (Omnilab Media had to increase its investment at the last minute to ensure production).
Overspending on such a scale has never occurred before, even going back to the era of Screen Australia.s predecessor funding arm, the Film Finance Corporation.

For the fourth series of Underbelly, we’re taken back to the mean streets of the 1920-30s when Darlinghurst was nicknamed ‘Razorhurst’ and two women ruled the streets. Colin Delaney steps back in time.
It wasn’t too hard to make Sydney’s Eveleigh St. terraces and Redfern’s infamous ‘block’ look run down and dilapidated. But build a couple of extra facades, roll in some beautiful old cars, bring in a few kids with grubby faces plus a few loitering, rugged old chaps and you’re thrown back to Darlinghurst in the hell-raising ‘20s. Gentrification has taken a turn for the worse: this is Underbelly: Razor.
This new Underbelly series is the true story set in the 1920s and ‘30s when madams Kate Leigh (Danielle Cormack) and Tilly Divine (Chelsie Preston Crayford) were bitter rivals and running all types of the vice on the streets of Sydney.

Analysis: A year after "Thelma and Louise" came "The Living End", an independent film which had a similar premise but made the protagonists two gay HIV+ men. It was raw, intense and signalled the arrival of a new talent in the form of filmmaker Gregg Araki. In the subsequent two decades, he's delivered several trippy films involving young, good-looking omnisexual people having lots of graphic sex and dealing with some wacky cobbled together plot shenanigans.

Before Australian writer/director David Caesar became a filmmaker, he was a truck driver.

A decade later, after making his mark with explosive bank robbery black comedy Idiot Box and one of Sam Worthington's first Aussie hits, Guy Ritchie-esque gangster movie Dirty Deeds, as well as lots of TV, Caesar came back to that first script, Prime Mover, and set about transforming it into a film closer to what he now wanted to make.
