Ed Harris — recently seen starring alongside Kristen Stewart in “Love Lies Bleeding” — is getting back behind the camera to direct his own adaptation of Kim Zupan’s acclaimed novel “The Ploughmen.” Owen Teague, currently playing the lead in “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” Nick Nolte and Bill Murray have come on board to star in the neo-noir crime thriller, which will go into production in Montana this Fall. Amy Madigan and Lily Harris are also set for the film.
“The Ploughmen” will mark Harris’ third feature as director after his Western “Appaloosa” and multi-Oscar nominated “Pollock.” Described being in the vein of “Hell or High Water” and “Wind River,” the film is set in the wilderness of Montana, where a strange friendship develops between a haunted young deputy sheriff and a notorious old murderer. John Gload (Nolte) is a killer so adept at his job that only now has he been apprehended.

Four years ago, actor Dave Franco made his feature directorial debut with the horror film The Rental, which happened to star his wife Alison Brie. Now Deadline reports that Franco and Brie are set to share the screen in the upcoming horror film Together, which they will also be producing, with first-time feature filmmaker Michael Shanks writing and directing.
Tango, Picturestart, and 30West are providing the financing, while Picturestart, Tango, 1.21, and Princess Pictures produce alongside Franco and Brie.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Deadline was able to learn that Together is about “the horror of co-dependency, told in a unique way.” Of course, they’re not ready to tell us just how the film will be approaching this subject matter in a unique way.

Actors and married couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco previously collaborated on Franco’s feature directorial debut, The Rental, in 2020. Now, the pair are set to co-star in a new horror film, Together.
Variety reports that the horror movie feature hails from first-time writer/director Michael Shanks.
Together will explore “the horror of co-dependency told in a unique way,” though additional plot details remain under wraps at this time. That Brie and Franco are married should add an interesting layer to the co-dependency horror, which might fall under the “unique” descriptor of this horror feature.
Brie appeared in Scream 4 before starring in Franco’s The Rental, which saw two couples celebrating a weekend getaway, only to face grueling terror when an imminent threat forces them to expose well-kept secrets. The couple also appeared together onscreen in ensemble comedy The Little Hours and A24’s The Disaster Artist.

Filmmaker Jeff Baena has consistently defied expectations over his career, taking audiences on wild rides that often veer from the comedic, to thrilling, to deeply unsettling—often within the same movie. His latest, Spin Me Round, brings his all-star comedy world repertory to Italy for a tale of sun-dappled Tuscan romance gone way, way wrong. For the second film in a row, Baena co-wrote the script with lead Alison Brie, following their first successful writing collaboration on the 2020 psychological thriller Horse Girl.
Brie stars alongside Alessandro Nivola, Molly Shannon, Aubrey Plaza (a two-time Film Independent Spirit Awards host and winner!), Lil Rel Howery, Tim Heidecker and Fred Armisen. The film tells the story of Amber (Brie), a restaurant manager...

Molly Shannon Is Game for Anything, from Getting Bruised by Florence Pugh to Returning to Host ‘SNL’
It seems there is nothing Molly Shannon cannot do. She can zing in a stylized satire like “The White Lotus” and a broad comedy like “The Other Two.” She also grounds her comedic sensibility with great emotional depth in intimate dramas, as she did in “Private Life” and “Other People.” And it’s no surprise that she brings her unique oddball sensibility to quirky indie comedies like “The Little Hours” and “Year of The Dog.” Her resume reads like a fairly comprehensive roster of interesting comedy and independent film over the last two decades.
Shannon’s latest dramatic outing is Zach Braff’s drama “A Good Person,” in which she plays opposite Florence Pugh in another heavy lift. Despite the loaded circumstances, Shannon finds a way to bring levity to the film’s darker moments.

Aubrey Plaza is on a roll. It took a while for her to find her way after "Parks and Recreation" ended and her time as April Ludgate came to a close. Appearing alongside Robert DeNiro in 2016's "Dirty Grandpa" didn't quite catapult her to megastar level, and while 2017's "Ingrid Goes West" was a memorable entry in her filmography, she seemed to fade from the spotlight after her brief flirtation with next-level stardom.
But a consistent output of strong performances in indies like "The Little Hours," "An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn," and "Addicted to Fresno" have demonstrated Plaza's versatile talents and tireless work ethic. And now things have picked up even more, and Plaza is, according to GQ, "leveling up." 2022's "Emily The Criminal" saw her deliver a surprisingly raw performance as an embattled catering company worker turned fraudster. Aubrey Plaza is best known for her comedic roles. After earning acclaim as the deadpan April Ludgate in Parks and Recreation, Plaza has since tickled us in movies such as The Little Hours, Life After Beth, and the darkly comic (but bloody brilliant) Ingrid Goes West. More recently her roles have gotten darker with the stunning Black Bear and this indie outing Emily the Criminal.
Directed and written by John Patton Ford, Emily the Criminal revolves around the titular character who, after an unknown criminal conviction, struggles to find a good job – scraping by as an independent contracted delivery driver. With mountains of debt, she is persuaded by a colleague to take on a somewhat illegal job committing credit card fraud.
Plaza gives an astonishing performance as Emily. She wears the frustrations on her face whilst never openly revealing the true make-up of Emily’s character. She skilfully reveals this...

Aubrey Plaza has opened up about “weirding out” Robert De Niro when the pair worked together in 2016’s “Dirty Grandpa.”
The actor and producer addressed years of swirling rumors about “being weird” and spoke about her commitment to her films at every stage of the process during a London Film Festival ScreenTalk session hosted by Leigh Singer, ahead of the release of Plaza’s new film “Emily The Criminal”.
Reflecting on her working relationship with the “Raging Bull” actor (the two actors played lovers in Dan Mazer’s gross-out comedy), Plaza clarified that any way De Niro could have been offended by her behavior would have been due to her staying committed to her character.
“I didn’t really have a relationship with him off camera because he’s him,” Plaza said when asked about how well she and De Niro knew each other. “I didn’t have time to get to know him,...

[Editor’s note: The following story contains some spoilers for “Spin Me Round.”]
It’s difficult to dispute Aubrey Plaza’s versatility. From embarking on a credit card-swiping crime spree in “Emily the Criminal” to just maybe being the new Lara Croft in a “Tomb Raider” reboot and even taking apart the very concept of acting in “Black Bear,” Plaza has gone out of her way to deconstruct any attempts at typecasting her.
So when “Spin Me Round,” the fourth collaboration with longtime creative partner and husband Jeff Baena, placed Plaza back in Italy after “The Little Hours” and upcoming Sicily-set Season 2 of “The White Lotus,” it was clear no one knew what to expect of her character. And boy, does Plaza keep us on our toes in the dark comedy that simultaneously subverts rom-com expectations and tells an all-to-true #MeToo story enhanced by a subtly slimy flavor that infects what should be a lush Tuscan getaway.

Spin Me Round, which Baena also directs and produces while Brie stars and produces, follows a woman who wins an all-expenses-paid trip to Italy through the Italian restaurant where she works, setting up an adventure after she meets the restaurant chain’s wealthy owner.

Just when it seems every production under the sun seems to be jetting off to Italy, “Spin Me Round” writer-director Jeff Baena looked for another angle: to dismantle the fantasy facade of the romanticized nation, and then, well, spin it. Baena’s “Spin Me Round,” which he co-wrote with lead star and frequent collaborator Alison Brie is part coming-of-age story and part slap in the face of the “expectation versus reality” memes, all wrapped up in a #MeToo mystery.

Netflix and Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Blade 2, Hellboy) have teamed up for new anthology series “Cabinet of Curiosities,” a collection of live-action stories that Netflix says “is meant to challenge our traditional notions of horror.”
“From macabre to magical, gothic to grotesque or classically creepy, the eight sinister tales — including two original works by del Toro — will be brought to life by a team of writers and directors personally chosen by the Shape of Water filmmaker.”
Netflix has announced today that the series will debut Tuesday, October 25, launching a special four day, double episode Netflix & Chills Halloween event. Two all-new “Cabinet of Curiosities” tales will debut daily through Friday, October 28, when the entire collection of eight stories will be available to Netflix members around the world.
“With Cabinet of Curiosities, we set out to showcase the realities existing outside of our normal world: the anomalies and curiosities.

There are a number of reasons to recommend Spin Me Round, a winning comedy about the manager of an Olive Garden-style restaurant who gets chosen to attend a training program in Italy. The film features a shockingly stacked supporting cast of comedy titans: Aubrey Plaza, Tim Heidecker, Molly Shannon, Fred Armisen, Lil Rel Howery, The Office’s Zach Woods, Looking’s Lauren Weedman, and High Maintenance’s Ben Sinclair. The latest from director Jeff Baena, whose strange and wildly diverse filmography includes Life After Beth and The Little Hours, Spin Me Round stood out as one of the better comedies in a strong SXSW lineup earlier this year––even its Harlequin romance novel-aping poster is a gem.
However, the top reason to see Spin Me Round—it is not even close, really—is Alison Brie landing a starring role perfectly suited for her talents. The Glow star co-wrote the script with Baena,...

This August is the month of Aubrey Plaza. Just a week after her crime drama Emily the Criminal arrives in theaters, her comedy Spin Me Round will debut. The SXSW selection, led Alison Brie alongside Plaza, comes from writer-director Jeff Baena and ahead of the release, the first trailer has arrived.
Also starring Alessandro Nivola, Molly Shannon, Tim Heidecker, Ayden Mayeri, Zach Woods, Ben Sinclair, Fred Armisen, and Tim Heidecker, the film follows Brie’s character who is flown to an Italian immersion program on her company’s dime. What starts as a romantic getaway devolves into chaos. With a font liberally nodding to Woody Allen, the Italian adventure looks like some light, fun summer fare before the season winds down.
See the trailer below.
Spin Me Round arrives in theaters and on VOD on August 19.

"Listen - I think something weird might be going on." IFC Films has revealed the full-length official trailer for a wacky indie dark comedy film titled Spin Me Round, the latest creation from indie filmmaker Jeff Baena and actor Alison Brie. This first premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, and also played at this year's Seattle Film Festival. Brie & Baena previously made Joshy, The Little Hours, and Horse Girl together - they've got quite a collaboration going. Flown out to an Italian immersion program on her company's dime, what starts as a romantic getaway devolves into chaos in this wild new comedy. The film stars an impressive ensemble: Alison Brie, Alessandro Nivola, Molly Shannon, Tim Heidecker, Ayden Mayeri, Zach Woods, Ben Sinclair, Fred Armisen, and Aubrey Plaza. This looks good! I'm curious to find out what is going on with this guy and all the mystery. Seems like kooky fun!

Move over, Brad Pitt/George Clooney, Ryan Gosling/Emma Stone, and dare I even say Al Pacino/Robert De Niro. Make way for the unstoppable force that is the Alison Brie and Aubrey Plaza team-up.
We've had the pleasure of watching both talented actors play off one another in 2017's "The Little Hours," the irreverent little comedy that put a hilariously modern twist on 14th century subject matter. Not content to strike gold only to let that collaboration turn into a one-and-done deal, filmmaker Jeff Baena decided to follow that up with a brand-new project and bring along Plaza, Brie, and even Molly Shannon for the ride.

"Pull up a chair, and mangia!" IFC Films has unveiled a first look teaser for the wacky indie dark comedy titled Spin Me Round, the latest from filmmaker Jeff Baena and actor Alison Brie. This is obviously riffing on Olive Garden, the most bland Italian restaurant you can find in America. I am curious to know what goes down after she lands in Italy and learns what's really going on.

“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” (Lionsgate) could very easily have been a one-joke movie, but Nicolas Cage playing a less successful and more venal version of himself is just the launching point for a clever and engaging film about fame, the movies and male bonding. When “Cage” accepts a gig to appear at the birthday of a nefarious Spanish billionaire (a hilarious Pedro Pascal), it’s one surprise after another both for our hero and for the audience.
Also available:
“Ambulance” (Universal Pictures Home Entertainment): Michael Bay puts the robots away for this heart-thumping caper starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
“The Bad Guys” (Universal Pictures Home Entertainment): Animated anthropomorphic villains seek some redemption in this Dreamworks comedy.
“The Contractor” (Paramount Home Entertainment): Chris Pine stars as a desperate veteran who gets tied up with an underground paramilitary force.
