Exclusive: Voltage Pictures has taken worldwide rights to American Boogeywoman, based on the early life of one of America’s most notorious female serial killers, Aileen Wuornos. Charlize Theron won an Oscar for playing her in the 2003 film Monster.
Currently in postproduction, the film stars Cobra Kai star Peyton List as young Wuornos and is written and directed by horror filmmaker Daniel Farrands.
List is joined by veteran genre actor Tobin Bell (“Jigsaw” from the Saw franchise), Lydia Hearst (The Haunting of Sharon Tate), Nick Vallelonga (Green Book), Swen Temmel, Meadow Williams, and Andrew Biernat (Shadow’s Edge).
Based on Wuornos’ early life in 1976, the film follows America’s most notorious female serial killer in Florida when she marries Lewis Fell, an older wealthy yacht club president only to inflict mayhem...

Like its title character, Babe, released a quarter-century ago, is the story of an underestimated little thing that went on to stupendous achievements.
It began as the 1983 Dick King-Smith children's book The Sheep-Pig, about an orphaned piglet who demonstrates a knack for herding sheep. In 1986, director George Miller (Mad Max) was on a flight from Sydney to London when a woman next to him laughed as she read the book. It's remarkable that an actress who starred in Gone With the Wind, won two Oscars and lived to 104 made her biggest impact on Hollywood by winning a lawsuit.

For those of us unlucky enough (or not made of money) to have grabbed one of the many limited physical versions of retro-shooter Ultracore, Inin Games have finally released the game digitally across all the major consoles – surprisingly including the Ps Vita! We’re looking at the Nintendo Switch version which, given the platforms current home to a myriad of indie games and retro re-releases, seems like the perfect home for a game born out of the 16-bit era.
Programmed by Digital Illusions (aka Dice) all the way back in 1994 for release on the Sega MegaDrive and Commodore Amiga, The 16-bit giants in the UK, Ultracore was sadly cancelled by publisher Psygnosis who, it seems, feared the game would be outdated in a time when 32-bit gaming was very much on the horizon. Originally title Hardcore, the games code apparently sat languishing on the devs hard drive until it was...

It’s a brand new month, and though it might seem like all hope is lost for 2020, at least streaming services have kept us occupied with plenty of stuff to watch. And like most platforms, Amazon Prime is dropping a ton of new movies on day one of July so that you can fill up your list and stay glued to your television. Not every flick releasing today is a winner, but you’re likely to find at least a handful of things you’re going to be dying to see.
For starters, Buried is an underrated Ryan Reynolds thriller launching on the service today, and if you can manage to sit through an hour and a half of a film that takes place entirely within a coffin, you’ll find a hell of a riveting experience. This extraordinarily tense pic tells the story of an American civilian truck driver...

On the FX/Hulu miniseries Mrs. America, Rose Byrne portrays feminist activist Gloria Steinem, and the performance just might bring her an Emmy nomination. However, the first actress to play the Ms. magazine founder was Kirstie Alley — and she did it as a Playboy Bunny.
The waitress position had been created by Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, who founded that magazine in 1953. (At its peak in 1972, the glossy sold 7.1 million copies a month, and annual profits were $12 million, or $70 million today.) NBC has given an eight-episode straight-to-series order to Connecting, a coronavirus-era comedy, from Blindspot creator/exec producer Martin Gero, his frequent collaborator Brendan Gall and Universal Television.
Connecting marks Gero’s first sale under the major overall deal he signed with Uni TV this spring. He pitched the idea at the start of his deal and quickly sent material that showed enough promise for the network to greenlight it to series.
Written and executive produced by Gero and Gall, Connecting is an ensemble comedy about a group of friends trying to stay close (and sane) through video chats as they share the highs and lows of these extraordinary times. Universal Television, a division of NBCUniversal Content Studios, is the studio.
This is the latest coronavirus-themed comedy series to head into production. Netflix has Social Distance, an anthology series from Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan; Freeform picked up...

As we get deeper into the summer, entertainment offerings are bound to start slimming – particularly in this pandemic era. Perhaps there’s no greater example of the oncoming drought than Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2020.
Though the new options may be few and far between on Amazon this month, at least they pack a bit of a punch. In the case of Hanna season 2, that punch is quite literal. Esme Creed-Miles returns as the titular precocious super soldier. You can check out our review here. Beyond that, there are two intriguing Amazon original movies. The first is the Rosamund Pike-starring Radioactive and that arrives on July 24. Then there is the Dave Bautista film My Spy on July 26.
With HBO Max now on the scene, Amazon Prime is sure to lose some of its library titles. That can already be seen in the relatively sparse offerings for July.

With so many streaming services to choose from, it can often be difficult to find the right one to spend your hard-earned dough on. That being said, Hulu has remained among the most exciting and content-heavy platforms alongside Netflix, really cementing itself as one of the most appealing options out there in recent years thanks to its collection of original content and very, very deep library of licensed films.
Like every other streaming service, they bring us new titles every month and July is looking to be quite a good one. Especially if you’re a horror fan. Admittedly, Hulu has always been pretty reliable when it comes to this particular genre, and that’s a reputation they seem intent to keep, as next month will bring us the likes of The Devil’s Rejects, Freddy vs. Jason, Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, House of 1000 Corpses, The Ninth Gate, The House That Jack Built...

Amit Rahav will never forget seeing himself for the first time in full wardrobe and hair and makeup as Yanky, the Hasidic Jew he plays in the Netflix miniseries “Unorthodox.”
“It was wild because I’m very secular and it is quite the opposite of my daily life and style,” Rahav says on this week’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket.” “Once I put on the clothes and the payot [the sidelocks that Hasidic men grow], I suddenly felt right. In some way, I got to know the character much better.”
Based on Deborah Feldman’s 2012 memoir of the same name, “Unorthodox” stars Shira Haas as Esty, Yanky’s new young wife, who flees her religious community in Brooklyn for a secular life in Berlin. “I read it very quickly because it’s so good,” says Rahav, 24. “It was very important for me to know [Feldman’s] point of view and where she comes from.

While it seems that for the foreseeable future charity fundraisers will occur online, the practice of putting them on television began in 1949 when Milton Berle hosted the first "telethon" (a portmanteau of "television" and "marathon").

His involvement with the telethon began with his friendship with Damon Runyon, a writer whose characters were the basis for the musical Guys and Dolls. Iconic daytime medical drama “General Hospital” is being forced to switch up its schedule, joining a growing list of shows which have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
ABC has announced that the show will now air four episodes per week, Monday through Thursday, instead of its usual five. Starting this Friday April 3, the network will air “Flashback Friday” editions, or reruns, of “General Hospital” in the place of original episodes.
Each “Flashback” episode will feature an introduction from a “General Hospital” star. This week’s episode, the 56th anniversary special which aired in April 2019 and featured a tribute to the hospital’s past, present and future, will be introduced by Laura Wright.
“General hospital” premiered on ABC almost exactly 57 years ago. The anniversary on April 1 will continue its run as both the longest-running American soap currently in production, and the longest-running scripted TV drama currently in production.

Javiera Mena’s queer chileno disco is timeless — and so is her glossy new single, “Flashback.” It’s the singer-songwriter’s first solo outing since the release of her previous album, Espejo, which was named one of Rolling Stone‘s Best Latin Albums of 2018.
In the Hugo Rubiano-directed clip, Mena plays a cyberpunk sci-fi protagonist, lost in a virtual reality of her own design. “Si me encanta este loop/Yo vivo en el pasado y no está bien,” she sings wistfully, embracing her nostalgia for a love lost, then pushing it away.

Among network groups, Disney’s suite of ESPN networks led all companies, with 58 nods. Among individual networks, Fox — fueled by Super Bowl Liv — had the most with 39.
Ironically, the announcement comes as sports events have come to a halt — leaving sports networks to vamp via classic games and other means.
“We look forward to celebrating our community and the wide range of outstanding achievement across all facets of our industry,” said Justine Gubar, executive director of the Sports Emmy Awards.

“You can’t kill me! I died seven years ago!” It’s very much to the credit of Matthew Modine that he persuasively sells this melodramatic scrap of dialogue, and every other aspect of his trickily written lead character, in “Backtrace,” a better-than-average VOD-centric thriller that likely wouldn’t work nearly so well without the veteran actor’s totally committed performance. Sylvester Stallone and Christopher McDonald are along for the ride, but in roles that keep them largely consigned to the sidelines until the inevitable climatic shootout. Throughout most of the movie’s running time, Modine is tasked with the majority of the heavy lifting, and he handles the burden admirably.
Of course, he does get a little help from co-stars Ryan Guzman, Meadow Williams and Tyler Jon Olson, cast as conspirators who smuggle Modine’s character, MacDonald, out of a prison psychiatric ward. Seven years earlier, MacDonald and two...

"Stay sharp. These guys will kill for what they're after." Lionsgate Premiere has debuted an official trailer for an action crime thriller titled Backtrace, starring Sylvester Stallone as a detective. This cops & robbers flick is about an amnesiac criminal, played by Matthew Modine, who is the lone surviving thief of a violent armored car robbery. He's given a drug that forces him to relive the life he's forgotten, in order to find the money he hid. The film's full cast includes Ryan Guzman, Meadow Williams, Christopher McDonald, Colin Egglesfield, Lydia Hull, Tyler Jon Olson, Sergio Rizzuto, and Swen Temmel. We've seen so many of these throwaway action movies, and they pretty much all look the same every time. So much screaming and intensity and gunfire in this glimpse. As always, at least the trailer is free to watch. Here's the new official trailer (+ poster) for Brian A. Miller's Backtrace,...

Director Brian A. Miller is to Bruce Willis what Peter Berg is to Mark Wahlberg, the difference is that unlike the Wahlberg/Berg pairing which pumps out movies that get theatrical releases and which people actually see (regardless of quality), the Miller/Willis pairing has resulted in a couple of mediocre cop dramas that few have seen.
The latest of Miller's cop movies is called Backtrace and though it doesn't star Willis, it does have another ageing action star at the helm: Sylvester Stallone.
Stallone stars as Sykes, a detective on the hunt for a bank robber suffering from amnesia, played by Matthew Modine, who has been sprung out of a maximum security facility by another group of bad guys who give Modine an experimental drug in an effort to bring back his memory of whe...
