Kier-la Janisse's Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies has been educating people in London, New York and Montreal for a few years now on the wide variety of forms and subjects in horror films. And there are two excellent classes upcoming in London for anyone who wants to delve deeper into the genre. On Thursday November 9th, the Institute is welcoming Robert Morgan (Bobby Yeah, 'D is for Deloused from ABCs of Death 2) and Chris Shepherd (Dad's Dead, Silence is Golden) to discuss horror animation. Animation of the horror variety might not be common, but some of the best short animated films of recent years are horror, with monsters, dark places, and scares abounding in the argubaly far greater imaginative form that can be achieved...

I’ve got a stop-motion animated short film here for you to watch today called Bobby Yeah, and it’s easily one of the strangest and most demented things you will have watched in a while. If watching weird gross stuff makes you feel uncomfortable, you might want to skip this one because it definitely take you on a trip through crazy land.
Bobby Yeah is a subhuman creature who experiences a series of increasingly bizarre, nightmarish encounters after stealing a malevolent baby’s prized pet.
The short comes from Robert Morgan and as deranged as this short is, it was definitely a unique and fascinating film. Check it out if you think you can handle how bonkers it is.

The ABCs of Death 2 now officially has a release date and it is just in time for Halloween. The film will be released by Magnet and Drafthouse Films on VOD on October 2nd and a limited theatrical run a few weeks later on the 31st .
The sequel is a follow-up to 2012’s horror anthology The ABCs of Death and, like its predecessor, will contain 26 short horror films by some of the genre’s greatest minds. As expected with so many shorts, the original was a bit of a mixed bag. There were certainly some incredible shorts like D is for Dogfight directed by Marcel Sarmiento, T is for Toilet by Lee Hardcastle, U is for Unearthed by Ben Wheatley, X is for Xxl by Xavier Gens, and the disgusting L is for Libido by Timo Tjahjanto. Hot on the heels of their ambitious horror anthology The ABCs Of Death, Drafthouse producers Ant Timpson and Tim League decided that the world needed another collection of horror shorts spanning every letter of the alphabet – and adventurous horror fans much like myself rejoiced. The ABCs Of Death 2 was greenlit, the directors were selected, and the inevitable waiting game began.
I tried on numerous occasions to extract as much information as possible from contributing artists – Jerome Sable, Aharon Keshales, Navot Papushado were tight-lipped in our interviews – but it looks like Magnet and Drafthouse are ready to start opening the floodgate of horrors hiding amidst these 26 short stories that are ready to shock, scare, and revolt viewers in ways the original didn’t dare.

Producers Ant Timpson, Tim League, and Magnet Releasing have announced the winner of The ABCs Of Death 2’s “Search for the 26th Director” – Robert Boocheck’s riotous M Is For Masticate.
The original ABCs Of Death, comprised of 26 alphabet-themed ways to die from the biggest names in horror, invited filmmakers from around the world to submit their own T-themed deaths – with one exceptional entry being chosen to appear in the final film. Time and money and a cast prevented me from making my own ABCs of Death 2 short (called “M is for Money”), but it didn’t stop hundreds of others from submitting their take on the letter “M” to the horror anthology produced by Ant Timpson, Tim League, and Magnet Releasing.

The sequel to last year's epic extreme-horror anthology The ABCs of Death is now underway, and the producers have now revealed the full lineup of filmmakers participating in this installment, again with each one assigned to a letter of the alphabet. 25 directors have now been selected, with the 26th to be again chosen from fan submissions. Magnet Releasing, along with returning producers Ant Timpson and Tim League, have expanded their search beyond the horror genre this time, and their newest directorial recruits include Julian Barratt from the cult UK series The Mighty Boosh, Todd Rohal (The Catechism Catalysm, Nature Calls), Manborg creator Steven Kostanski, Argentina's Alejandro Brugués (Juan Of The Dead), Japan's Hajime Ohata (Henge), UK commercial director Jim Hosking, and Chris Nash of the mega-grossout Skinfections shorts. These new additions join the previously confirmed lineup of Álex de la Iglesia (The Last Circus, Day Of The Beast), Rodney Ascher...

Whether you liked The ABCs Of Death or not, it was pretty hard to believe a franchise wasn’t being born in the same way V/H/S took off. The formula is simple: give 26 different directors one letter from the alphabet each, give them a $5,000 budget, and let them create a short film centering around a death. While the process of putting everything together is grueling I’m sure, the effort for our directors is rather minimal compared to feature filmmaking, and it’s pretty safe to say one of these films can be churned out every year.
Now that everyone’s had a chance to see The ABCs Of Death, producers Ant Timpson and Tim League are already gearing fans up for The ABCs Of Death 2, releasing the entire list of directorial participants for their upcoming sequel. I know, I feel like I just watched the first one yesterday,...

Horror Anthology films are back. There is no doubt about it. Last year, we saw two of them – both from the same distribution company of Magnet Releasing – in V/H/S (review here) and ABC’s of Death. This year, we will see the follow-up to the former film, V/H/S. However, we will have to wait for ABC’s of Death 2 until 2014. While I consider ABCs of Death to be ”Fantastic Fest: The Movie”, the actual product wasn’t anywhere near the gratification one gets from the festival. Read the Press Release below for all the loose details. I’m really happy Jerome Sable is included on this director list as he someone I think everyone should look out for. You can even read our interview with Sable here.

Looks like audiences need further education - The ABCs of Death is getting a sequel. The anthology, featuring 26 shorts (each one a story about death, focused around a letter of the alphabet) by some of the brightest new horror directors of the time, will expand past horror directors. Of course, that doesn't mean that horror directors won't be prominently features. Genre favorites like the Soska Sisters (American Mary), Marcus Dunstan (The Collection), and Larry Fessenden (Habit). Howdy folks, Jeff here with another update from up North at the Toronto After Dark 2012 Film Festival! Saturday was the third day of the festival, and as is customary, it was also Tadff’s “Zombie Appreciation Night.” Essentially, the festival programmers put two zombie-related films on the bill for the evening screenings, and they work with the Toronto Zombie Walk to integrate the two events, giving an admission discount to those dressed up as the undead.
First, however, was Tadff’s Shorts After Dark program, which showed during the afternoon and featured nine different shorts from all over the globe. Unlike the shorts that precede most of the feature screenings, these shorts are not solely Canadian-made. As with most short programs, you usually find a mixture of themes, and there are almost always a few that you love, and a few that you really don’t like. This year seemed to be pretty animation heavy.

Today, AFI 2012 announced its complete lineup, after previously debuting its New Auteurs, Young Americans, Galas and Special Screenings we finally get a look at the Midnight, Breakthrough, Shorts, and deliriously good World Cinema Selections.

The four Midnight titles all played in Tiff 2012’s Midnight Madness selection, and here we see John Dies at the End making a stop here after originally premiering at Sundance. The theme for this year’s B-Movie, Underground and Trash Film Festival, held in the city of Breda in the Netherlands, is “Apocalypse.” So get ready to watch the world end dozens of different ways on Sept. 5-9 at various venues around the city.
The fun kicks off on the 5th with the German movie Hell by director Tim Fehlbaum. If you didn’t know, “hell” means “bright” in German and, given that title, this flick is set appropriately in a post-apocalyptic future where global warming has decimated the planet and surviving tribes battle for water and food.
Other post-apocalyptic visions include Milan Konjevic’s Zone of the Dead starring legendary zombie killer Ken Foree; Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro’s Bazillian underground hit Beyond the Grave about a world where magic and madness rule the world; and Rob van Eyck’s bizarrely twisted Afterman and Afterman 2.

The Artist ended up taking home seven awards including Best Film, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Original Music and Best Costume Design. This really isn't that surprising, I have a feeling this movie will end up sweeping the Oscars as well. It's also not surprising that Meryl Streep took home the award for Best Actress. It always seems like she's always surprised when she wins, but the rest of us all know it's coming. Maybe she's just acting surprised. Then of course Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy won a couple of awards, unfortunately Gary Oldman didn't win Best Actor.

The British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) took place on Sunday night, with "The Artist" coming out the big winner by taking awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor and three others. Meryl Streep won best actress for "The Iron Lady." She lost a shoe on the stairs up to the stage, giving presenter Colin Firth the chance to play Prince Charming and kneel before her to replace it. "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" won for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best British Film, but even though Gary Oldman was nominated for Best Actor, he lost the award to "The Artist" star Jean Dujardin. The 2012 Orange British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) were held tonight at which The Artist was named Best Film along with six other awards including Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Original Screenplay and Actor (Jean Dujardin). The film also took home awards for cinematography, costume design and original music. None of this comes as much of a surprise as The Artist is now, and has been for some time, considered the front-runner for Best Picture at the Oscars and has slowly been gaining steam in other categories including director and actor, especially as Dujardin has been charming American and international audiences with his latest Funny or Die skit and an appearance on "Saturday Night Live". In other awards, Meryl Streep won for Best Actress, adding more fuel to the competition between her and The Help's Viola Davis, a film that found itself in the winner's circle with Octavia Spencer winning Best Supporting Actress.

Well the 2012 BAFTA Awards are over (unless of course you’re watching them on a catch-up service) and the event was filled with very little surprises – The Artist repeated its success from both the Richard Attenborough Film Awards and the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards and my bet (despite my love for his competition) for the Outstanding Debut Award, Paddy Considine, did walk away with that award. Of the awards Real surprises, I’m so happy for Christopher Plumer, who walked away with the Best Supporting Actor award for Beginners, and Octavia Spencer who won the Best Supporting Female award for The Help (although like many I thought that would go to Carey Mulligan for Drive).

The 2012 Orange BAFTA ceremony tonight was, as expected, dominated by Michael Hazanavicius’ silent black-and-white love story The Artist.
Taking home seven awards in total, including ‘Best Film’, ‘Best Director’, ‘Best Actor for Jean Dujardin’, ‘Best Original Screenplay’, ‘Original Music’, ‘Cinematography’ and ‘Best Costume Design’, The Artist won almost every category it competed in.
Although Dujardin was a surprise over George Clooney for Best Actor, there was no shock for Best Actress with the BAFTA going to Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady, which was also honoured for the extraordinary Make-up & Hair category.
In the supporting category The Help’s Octavia Spencer won Supporting Actress and Christopher Plummer won Best Supporting Actor for Beginners, as expected.
Outstanding British Film and Adapted Screenplay went to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy with Senna (Documentary, Editing) and Hugo (Production Design, Sound) also winning two Baftas.

Although the Brits had better nominations than over here in the states for their celebration with the year in film, they still went with fairly predictable choices. Michel Hazanavicius’s The Artist led the night, taking home seven awards including Best Film, Director, Actor and Original Screenplay. Expect a similar pattern at the end of the month for the Academy Awards. Meryl Streep also took home Best Actress after seemingly strong contention with Viola Davis for The Help.
It was great to see Senna take home Best Documentary and Best Film Editing, as well as Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy win Best Adapted Screenplay and Outstanding British Film. There was some surprise with The Skin I Live In beating out A Separation for Best Film Not In English. Check them all out below (winners in red) and we’ll see you for what is shaping up to be a dreadfully boring Oscar night.

So there we have it. The 2012 BAFTA Awards have now drawn to a close. The Artist had an amazing night taking seven awards including that of the award for Best Film. Michel Hazanavicius’s black and white silent film also took awards for Best Actor, Original Music, Cinematography, Costume Design, Original Screenplay, Best Director and Leading Actor. Simply amazing!
Senna came away with two out of the three awards it was nominated for including Best Editing and Best Documentary which was a new category for this year.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy won two awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and Outstanding British Film but a rather big surprise was that Shame directed by Steve McQueen and starring Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan left empty handed. The full list of winners is below.

Drive was among our favourites on this year’s nominations list, but did it walk away with a BAFTA? Here are those winners in full…
Looking down the lengthy list of BAFTA nominees there’s one thing that immediately springs to mind: 2011 was a great year for movies. And while awards ceremonies don’t always focus on the films that truly deserve exposure, it was great to see Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive – this site’s favourite film of the last 12 months – given the attention it deserved, with no fewer than four nominations (assuming we can count properly, that is).
We were pleased to see We Need To Talk About Kevin so prominently featured, too, since it was sorely overlooked by the Academy in its Oscar shortlist – that the BAFTAs would champion a British-made film isn’t much of a surprise, of course, but Lynne Ramsay and Tilda Swinton richly...
