Ed. Note: On Nov. 28, Joe Holcombe and his wife, Claryce, who lost eight family members in the church massacre in Sutherland Springs, Texas, as well as the unborn child of one of them, filed a lawsuit against the United States government, claiming negligence.
The suit states that the Air Force failed to enter shooter Devan Patrick Kelley’s name in the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s database after he pleaded guilty to domestic assault five years ago. According to the suit, had the Air Force entered Kelley’s name into the database, he would not have been able to obtain firearms.

Set inside a sterile American supermarket and starring several different aisles worth of anthropomorphized groceries, this is an R-rated cartoon in which the hero is a weenie named “Frank,” a Twinkie is an actual twink, and the villain is literally a douche. This is a movie so ugly it makes “South Park: Bigger,...

Did the Democratic National Convention peak on Night 1?
Michelle Obama will certainly be a tough headliner to follow, thanks to a profoundly personal speech that talked plainly about her own experiences as First Lady, laid our her rationale for why Hillary Clinton deserves to be president, and threw more shade than an oversized beach umbrella on Republican nominee Donald Trump — without ever mentioning him by name.

Below are five of the more provocative passages from Obama’s speech — which seemed to unite even the most divided Democrats into fits of thunderous applause.

The spring's big comic-book movies feature the superhero trend du jour of good guys fighting one other: Batman takes on Superman, Team Captain America versus Team Iron Man. But these all-star team-ups — specifically, Warners/DC Comics' Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Marvel/Disney's Captain America: Civil War — are in a fight of their own, and not just to see who can come up with the more unwieldy title.
For years, DC had the prolific, and sometimes even Oscar-nominated comic book franchises, while its chief competitor's characters were...

I had no idea that the Armored Combat League existed until I came across this short documentary Harlem Knight Fight. It centers around a man named Damion Digrazia, the captain of the New York chapter of the league.
It’s basically a medieval-inspired fight club in which people dress up in their real metal suits armor and beat the living shit out of each other! This is no joke. These guys are serious and it’s Mma fighting with the contestants wearing heavy-ass armor.
The doc shows off footage of what these fights look like and they are freakin’ intense! A lot of these contestants get seriously injured and I’m surprised no one has died in combat yet. These guys aren’t wielding foam weapons, they are metal axes, swords, and various other things and they are hitting each other freakin' hard!
The doc also tells the story of how Digrazia,...

Miracles from Heaven means well, and I mean that sincerely. It promises an uplifting, feel-good story about the nobility of paying-it-forward, doing right by your neighbors and the power of faith and adversity against the hardships of the world. And believe it or not, it doesn’t necessarily feel like a gospel lesson in the process.
Unlike its hokey, sermon-heavy evangelical cinematic peers like God’s Not Dead or Heaven is for Real, there’s an honest, hard-wrought underlining integrity to the film earned by respectable performances from Jennifer Garner, Martin Henderson, Kylie Rogers John Carroll Lynch and Eugenio Derbez.
It’s melodramatic at times, sure. In fact, a lot of the time, as its never truly prone to subtlety. But there’s an occasional moment of raw emotional intensity, or genuinely affecting physical turmoil, that doesn’t often feel as cheap or manipulative as you’d think. In the right contexts,...

Risen is a modest but engaging riff on the old post-crucifixion Easter legend as told through the eyes of a non-believer. In 33 Ad Jerusalem, Roman occupiers are under threat of a Jewish uprising. The Jews claim a Nazarene named Yeshua (aka Jesus – played by Clifton Curtis) is the Messiah, so Pontius Pilate (Peter Firth) promptly has him crucified, then orders Roman officer Clavius (Joseph Fiennes) to witness the execution and help dispose of the body. Three days later Jesus’ corpse has vanished from its cave tomb, though the entrance was blocked with a boulder and watched by guards. Pilate orders Clavius and Lucius (Tom Felton), to find Jesus and his disciples at all costs, for fear that if they don’t quickly produce a corpse, the Jews will rise up. Thus begins a manhunt of biblical proportions.

Stephen Colbert hosted another edition of The Hungry for Power Games last night on The Late Show, paying tribute to the fallen Republican candidates who dropped out after the New Hampshire primary, while also introducing a new co-host, Caligula, who, quite frankly, stole the whole show. However, in between the many moments where Caligula shined, Colbert was able to poke fun at the departing candidates in some truly wonderful ways. First up was Rick Santorum, who Colbert called “a Sunday School teacher that assigns homework.” The Late Show host mentioned how Santorum had decided to withdraw from the race back on February 3,

Bear Story [Historia de un oso] – Chile – 11 minutes
While Gabriel Osorio Vargas‘ Chilean short film Bear Story tells the tale of a sad, lonely old bear, it does ultimately prove uplifting. Here’s a creature tinkering tirelessly in his shop to put the finishing touches on what could very well be his life’s work and yet any and all success or failure is met with silence. There’s no one else in his small home to celebrate or lament—just the indentations of two bodies on his mattress permanently displaying that love and company existed not too long ago. How did it come to this? We’ll never know and that’s a wonderful thing. Instead we discover that love’s strength—strong enough to render distance and death harmless. His...

Love. That’s a pretty big four letter word there. The biggest of the four letter words, dare I say. And that word covers a lot of categories, be it platonic love, romantic love, familial love, and all the other kinds of love they taught you about in Sunday school.
And that’s exactly what you’ll find in Grandma, a film written and directed by Paul Weitz and starring Lily Tomlin and Julia Garner. Tomlin plays Elle Reid, the grandmother of Garner’s character Sage, who is a pregnant teen on the run from her mother who kicked her out for becoming pregnant in the first place. Sage shows up at Elle’s house, asking for money for an abortion, and that’s how the whole story begins. In an enthralling sequence of events, we follow the two on their journey as they reconnect with themselves and with everyone around them.
