Paul Atreides is a complicated character. By the end of "Dune: Part Two," the heir to House Atreides is ascending in power and clearly on a path to unleash war across the Dune galaxy. This twist in the boy-turned-messiah's story is sobering. It doesn't completely align with the books, either — and it turns out that director Denis Villeneuve was well aware of that fact. In an interview with ScreenRant, Villeneuve explained the intention of having Paul "break bad" by the end of the two-part adaptation of the first book of author Frank Herbert's iconic sci-fi series:
"When Frank Herbert wrote the book, and then when the book came out, he was disappointed by how people perceived Paul Atreides. At the time, he felt that people were talking about Paul as a hero, and for him, he was an anti-hero. He was a dark figure. The book was a warning...

Deadline Hollywood's latest financial deep dive reveals a striking trend in 2024's most profitable films: animation reigns supreme. While social media commentary bemoans the lack of originality in movies these days, particularly in regard to the number of sequels being produced, their wallets are painting a different picture.
Leading the charge, unsurprisingly, is Inside Out 2. The critically lauded sequel has not only captured hearts but also dominated box office receipts, translating directly into colossal profits and cementing its place as the year's most lucrative release.
Disney's animated dominance continues with Moana 2 securing the coveted second spot. In a fascinating turn of events, this highly profitable sequel was initially conceived as a Disney+ television series. However, a strategic pivot by CEO Bob Iger saw it sail onto the big screen, a decision that has clearly resulted in a treasure trove of box office riches and proves that Iger was...

Florence Pugh doesn’t understand why actresses are also expected to be models.
The Oscar-nominated actress opened up during a recent Who What Wear cover story about how the expectations in Hollywood have changed, such as reports of needing a high social media follower count for auditions and how actors can’t just work as actors.
“It’s so shit,” Pugh said. “It’s not the same thing. It’s not the same thing at all. I had this conversation recently with a friend.… It’s just mental that red carpets are even an expectancy of someone that is not…. That’s not even their job.… They don’t model. They are good at being on a camera that is this close with that face, and they know how to show how raw their soul is on the flick of a switch. That’s their talent. Their talent isn’t anything beyond that.

It's a movie that isn't about the usual baddies versus goodies. “It's actually about something very common, and it hopefully has many different parts of it that we can all see ourselves in,...

Hollywood has long been a reflection of shifting cultural tastes, technological advancements, and financial priorities. Yet, some of the highest-grossing films that were released last year in 2024 have brought to light a troubling trend within the film industry: an over-reliance on familiar franchises, reboots, and sequels, instead of embracing original narratives.
While these films continued to dominate the global box office, they raised important concerns about the diminishing creativity and risk-taking in Hollywood’s blockbuster approach.

Last night, at 2:17am, every child from Mrs. Gandy’s class woke up, got out of bed, went downstairs, opened the front door, walked into the dark, and never came back. Watch the official trailer for Barbarian director Zach Cregger’s Weapons, in theaters on August 8, 2025.
Here’s the brand new official synopsis from New Line Cinema: “When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.”
Much like Barbarian, Cregger’s new movie is cloaked in a web of darkness, with even this trailer refusing to spoil pretty much anything about the movie. All we know is the basic gist of the storyline, with the trailer teasing that it’s only the beginning of this nightmarish mystery.

This year, the Oscar season prayer has a name, and it is “Sinners.”
With “Sinners,” writer-director Ryan Coogler, one of Hollywood’s most quietly seismic forces, steps into a genre long neglected by the Academy, and once again, reshapes the game. A slow-burn psychological horror film, “Sinners” is not just a pivot for Coogler — rather, it’s a proclamation.
For more than a decade, Coogler has been Hollywood’s quiet revolutionary — symbolizing, for the Black community, a figure akin to our very own Christopher Nolan. From chronicling the final hours of Oscar Grant’s life in “Fruitvale Station,” to reviving the “Rocky” franchise with “Creed,” to breaking barriers with the cultural juggernaut “Black Panther,” Coogler fuses personal and political storytelling with mass appeal like few others.
Now comes “Sinners,” a certified box-office hit and critical darling that stands to redefine both Coogler’s career and the Academy’s stale boundaries around horror.

Zach Cregger’s (Barbarian) next movie Weapons has been described as a “horror epic” for a while now, and it’s an ambitious branding that the filmmaker is fully embracing in a new chat with Entertainment Weekly this week. Inspired by Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, of all things, Weapons is said to be “more ambitious in every way” than Cregger’s feature debut.
The plot of the mysterious Weapons, which will be released in theaters on August 8, 2025? Entertainment Weekly details, “The moment the clocks turned 2:17 a.m. on a seemingly random Wednesday morning, 17 children in the fictional Pennsylvania town of Maybrook woke from their beds, exited their homes, and ran into the night. They never came back.”
“That mystery is going to propel you through at least half of the movie, but that is not the movie,” Cregger teases. “The movie will fork and change and reinvent and go in new places.

Warner Bros. maintained its commanding presence at the box office this weekend, with “Sinners” and “A Minecraft Movie” leading both domestic and international charts. “Sinners,” directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, added $45 million in its second weekend in North America, reflecting a 6% dip from its $48 million debut. The vampire thriller has now amassed $122.5 million domestically and $161.6 million worldwide against a $90 million production budget.
The film’s endurance has been unusual for the horror genre, which traditionally sees sharp declines after opening weekends. Boosted by premium formats, “Sinners” has performed strongly on IMAX screens, generating $12.3 million globally over the weekend and bringing its IMAX total to $20.6 million. Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX, credited the film’s success to its cultural momentum, likening it to cinematic events such as “Oppenheimer” and “Dune: Part Two.”

Warner Bros. has dominated at the box office in April as “A Minecraft Movie” and “Sinners” continue to shatter expectations.
Over the weekend, “Minecraft” collected $37.8 million overseas and $60.5 million worldwide in its fourth weekend of release. Meanwhile, “Sinners” added $13.5 million internationally and $58.5 million globally in its sophomore outing. For the second consecutive weekend, Warner has nabbed the No. 1 and 2 spots on international, domestic and global box office charts. It’s an especially promising reversal in fortunes because the studio suffered a rough start to 2025 with the theatrical flops of Robert De Niro’s “The Alto Knights” and Bong Joon Ho and Robert Pattinson’s “Mickey 17” (and that’s after ending last year with the misfire “Joker: Folie à Deux”).
“A Minecraft Movie” has grossed $436.6 million overseas and $816 million globally, ranking as the biggest Hollywood movie of the year to date. Top foreign markets include the United Kingdom ($67.1 million), Germany...

Timothée Chalamet Movie Transformation (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Timothée Chalamet’s rise has been as dramatic and stylish as one of his red carpet-looks. He started as the indie scene’s favorite artsy boy, soft-spoken, floppy-haired, and constantly heartbroken in sun-drenched landscapes. Fast forward a few years, and he’s now leading box office juggernauts, riding space worms in Dune: Part Two, and rapping his way through chocolate factories in Wonka.
Somehow, he managed to stay both a fashion icon and a total goofball (we’re still not over Lil Timmy Tim). With collaborations spanning from Greta Gerwig to Denis Villeneuve, he has officially entered that rare actor zone where people will show up just to watch him stare moodily into the distance. So, whether you’ve been following him since Call Me By Your Name or hopped on the hype train post-Interstellar, it’s time to rank the hits, the near-misses,...

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament has returned, and as you’ll see from the most profitable films of 2024 that we’re about to disclose, a movie’s game doesn’t end at the box office. Rather, its downstream revenues and subsequent home windows must be taken into account. Streaming continues to be a wildcard: While traditional motion picture studios such as Disney, Warner Bros, Sony, Paramount and Universal rely on lucrative pay two and pay three streamer deals to catapult their slates into the black, those streamers who’ve embraced theatrical (specifically Amazon MGM Studios and Apple Original Films) have a clandestine metric as to how they evaluate a movie’s post-cinema success. By traditional studio P&l standards, some of those releases would be considered flops. Given that, Apple and Amazon are excluded from this year’s survey. The Most Valuable Blockbuster series runs later rather than sooner as...

In a major shift for Oscar voting protocol, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that members will now be required to confirm they’ve watched all nominated films in a category before being allowed to vote in that race.
The initiative, aimed at strengthening the integrity and credibility of the awards process, combines digital tracking through the Academy Screening Room with member-reported viewings — building on a structure already familiar to Academy voters.
How It Works
Beginning with the 98th Academy Awards, ballots during the final voting phase will only unlock for members who have verified they’ve watched all nominated films in a given category. This requirement applies across all 24 competitive Oscar categories, from best picture and the acting races to costume design and the newly introduced award for casting.

Having completed two full weeks in theaters worldwide, A Minecraft Movie continued its stupendous box office run despite facing competition in the form of Ryan Coogler’s Sinners this week. The movie slipped to the number two spot on the domestic box office charts, but continued to maintain its stronghold overseas, thanks to its broad appeal. A Minecraft Movie passed a couple of major milestones at the global box office this weekend, having already passed the $300 million mark domestically a few days ago. It’s the top-grossing Hollywood film of the year, and a much-needed shot in the arm for Warner Bros. after a disappointing start to 2025.
With nearly $350 million domestically and another $376 million from overseas markets, A Minecraft Movie has earned a combined global total of $720 million so far. The movie has now overtaken hits such as Dune: Part Two, Fast X, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Produced...

Hailee Steinfeld just pulled a cinematic heist in Sinners, not even the lead, yet she’s the one everyone’s obsessed with. Her performance? Raw, unfiltered, and borderline feral in the best way possible. Fans are already quoting her lines, tweeting about that one intense scene, and wondering why she isn’t headlining every major film out there.
Meanwhile, Zendaya, who’s been landing huge roles left, right, and center, still hasn’t delivered that one legendary performance. You know, the kind that shuts everyone up and wins Oscars?
Despite all the screen time and hype, she’s yet to prove she’s got the same acting firepower. And next to Steinfeld’s breakout chaos in Sinners, the contrast is painfully obvious. It’s not about who’s more famous, it’s about who brings it. And right now? Steinfeld just brought the whole house down, fangs and all.

Star Wars Celebration is finally winding down after Lucasfilm delivered some exciting looks at future movies and TV shows. One of the biggest projects to have some exciting developments was The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is coming to theaters on May 22, 2026. Star Wars has delivered some iconic merch over the years for droids and creatures, and the latest subject of gear is Grogu, the adorable green Force user who first debuted in The Mandalorian. At Celebration, Collider's Maggie Lovitt sat down with The Mandalorian & Grogu writer/director Jon Favreau and Star Wars visionary Dave Filoni, and asked what a potential popcorn bucket for the film could look like. Favreau mentioned that the potential for toys and collectibles factors into character designs, but that they haven’t reached a verdict on the popcorn bucket. Favreau told Collider (at 5:06 in the video above):
“That's a great question that has not been reached yet.

Artificial or not, Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos has some ideas on how artificial intelligence could make films “better.” During the company’s first-quarter earnings call on Thursday, Sarandos said that he believes that the real opportunity for AI in filmmaking is if they can help films be “10 percent better,” not just “50 percent cheaper.” Sarandos cited James Cameron’s recent comments about how the technology could cut production costs in half.
“There’s a ton of excitement about what AI can do for content creators,” Sarandos said on the call. “I read the article too about what Jim Cameron said about making movies 50 percent cheaper. I remain convinced that there’s an even bigger opportunity if you can make movies 10 percent better. So, our talent today is using AI tools to do set references, pre-vis, VFX sequence prep, shot planning, all kinds of things today that kind of make the process better.

While the Trump administration has sparked uproar in the European Union over the president’s aggressive new trade policy, it’s also fueled tensions between the U.S. and European film industries.
Jacques Audiard (“Emilia Perez”), Costa-Gavras (“Z”), Audrey Diwan (“Happening”) and Claude Lelouch (“A Man and a Woman”) are among the French filmmakers who have called out the the offensive led by the American film community against EU regulations, including the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (Avms), which forces foreign streaming services to invest a portion of their revenues into local productions.

Trump Rhetoric Rallies Canadians
Poilievre implosion: Ahead of the Canadian election on April 28, I took a deep dive into how media and culture have unexpectedly played a significant role in a rollercoaster race. Admittedly, perhaps not as much of a role as Donald Trump, whose constant goading of his northern neighbor has managed to enrage almost the entire country. His tariffs, in part, led to Liberal Prime Minister and election candidate Mark Carney to pledge major support for Canada’s public broadcaster, CBC/Radio-Canada, and turn what is usually a lesser battle zone into one that’s becoming a major talking point. Both Europe’s most right-wing nation and its second hottest destination for international shoots, Hungary has shocked the world with its recent ban on LGBTQ+ public events. But Hollywood is not yet ready to give up on the country’s generous tax incentives.
An amendment to the constitution passed on Monday by the Hungarian parliament codifies a law passed in March that made it an offense to hold or attend events that violate Hungary’s “child protection” legislation, which prohibits the “depiction or promotion” of homosexuality to minors under 18.
The Hungarian government will use measures to enforce the ban including the use of facial recognition software to identify those attending LGBTQ+ public events — such as Budapest Pride — and infractions can come with fines of up to 200,000 Hungarian forints ($546).
It’s not Hungary’s first anti-lgbtq+ law. Back in 2021, the country’s parliament passed a law forbidding the dissemination of content...

Had anyone predicted that Jason Momoa would one day be known for his comedic roles in big-budget tent pole films, especially after his breakout role as the vile Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, they'd have been laughed out of the room. But here we are now, with Momoa having delivered A Minecraft Movie, yet another hit film in which he isn't playing the brooding action hero that he was once predicted to become. In fact, this is the third major franchise film of his career, following his two Aquaman movies and Fast X; and this is if you ignore his failed Conan the Barbarian reboot and the first Dune.
Thanks to these recent hits, Momoa's career box office haul has now passed the $5 billion mark worldwide. His biggest hit remains the first Aquaman movie, which grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide. A Minecraft Movie recently overtook the $439 million lifetime global haul...

Hollywood Box Office: Top 10 Films After Q1 ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
The first quarter of the year has ended, and we entered the second quarter this April, which started with a bang with A Minecraft Movie. The Hollywood box office has been slower this year, and this has happened even with big-budget films like Snow White and Captain America: Brave New World. As we enter Q2, let’s rank the top 10 highest-grossing Hollywood movies of the year so far at the worldwide box office. Despite being a box office failure, Snow White is also among the top 10, and there are a lot of other films to release this year, and the ranking will change as well. Keep scrolling for more.
Based on research, the first quarter or Q1 is mostly slower in comparison to the other quarters of the year. It is lagging behind major film releases following the December holiday rush.

Several years ago, Hollywood took a stand against North Carolina’s controversial “bathroom bill” Hb 2 and its successor Hb 142 targeting transgender people by pulling production out of the state, including the high-profile decision by Netflix to move what became one of its biggest YA hits, Outer Banks, to South Carolina.
Film and TV studios are now facing a similar moral dilemma with Hungary, a country that has become a leading European filming location. Two of this year’s Best Picture nominees, Dune: Part Two and The Brutalist, were shot there.
Fast-tracked anti-lgbtq legislation last month that banned LGBTQ+ public gatherings — including the annual Budapest Pride — and sparked street protests, was codified this week with a constitutional amendment. It passed overwhelmingly at the Hungarian parliament, which is controlled by a coalition led by populist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

It passed overwhelmingly at the Hungarian parliament, which is controlled by a coalition led by populist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
This is the latest in a string of moves targeting the LGBTQ community...

Stern Pinball has announced its latest pinball machine, which takes us back to the granddaddy of giant monsters: King Kong.
King Kong: Myth of Terror Island will find players joining “Ann Darrow, Jack Driscoll, and Karl Denham on their journey to the mysterious Terror Island, which results in King Kong traveling back to New York City with disastrous (and fun) consequences.” The custom-sculpted King Kong reacts “to player action through a new animatronic animation system, swinging his arms and torso to assert his dominance. Summon him by hitting the custom sculpted Gong bash target, but beware, when pinballs are locked into a New York City train car, an agitated King Kong will destroy and flip it over to start King Kong multiball.“
The description continues, “Encounter and escape danger as players enter ‘The Pit’ on Terror Island. Guarded by a custom-sculpted giant spider, this area magnetically grabs and attacks the ball,...

Found footage freaks, get hype, because we’re getting it in spades with the new viral marketing campaign for Zach Cregger’s Weapons. Yesterday, New Line Cinema released a series of creepy Ring camera-style images and videos through their social media accounts. Plus, they launched the website MaybrookMissing.net to cultivate a strange mystery around Cregger’s latest feature. And from what we’ve seen so far, Weapons looks downright chilling.
The website is something out of the early 2000s, perfect for cultivating that air of truth around Weapons. Without that sleek, polished feel typical of a movie website, this looks like something made by a small-town journalist trying to establish their local paper’s digital footprint. It’s very The Blair Witch Project, which set the standard for viral marketing campaigns before its release in 1999.
On its home page, the website states:

A Minecraft Movie has unquestionably been the biggest success story of the year so far at the domestic box office, and after opening with over $160 million, the latest video game adaptation kept up the pressure during its second weekend. A Minecraft Movie hauled in another $78 million at the domestic box office this weekend, a 52% drop from its debut that still helped lift it to a $283 million domestic total. The film has also collected $273 million from international markets for a $557 million global total. This $557 million not only makes A Minecraft Movie the second-highest-grossing movie of the year, but it is also enough to make it one of the top five highest-grossing movies of Jason Momoa’s career, surpassing even Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
A Minecraft Movie broke all sorts of records during its opening weekend. The film’s $162 million debut was the highest of any video game movie ever, and...

A couple weeks after making its mark at CinemaCon with footage that was described as being “batshit insane,” Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have officially kicked off the marketing campaign for director Zach Cregger’s (Barbarian) Weapons with a mysterious image.
This first look teaser image for the upcoming “horror epic” – which has been compared to Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia – is a simple photo of an alarm clock set to 2:17am, which is an important time in the world of Cregger’s Weapons. That’s precisely when every kid in town wakes up, gets out of bed, walks outside in the dark and never comes back home.
And that’s really all we know about Weapons at this time, which will be released by New Line in theaters on August 8. Check out the teaser image below and expect more very soon.

Even before Hereditary and Midsommar director Ari Aster’s most recent film, Beau Is Afraid, was released back in April of 2023, there were rumblings that his next project would be a “western noir dark comedy” called Eddington. This is a project Aster would be circling back to, because at one time he thought Eddington was going to be his first feature. Soon enough, it was confirmed that the “contemporary western that takes place during the pandemic” would be his fourth film – and just last week, it was announced that Eddington will be screening at the 78th Annual Cannes Film Festival in May before receiving a theatrical release on July 18th. With its Cannes screening swiftly approaching, a trailer for the film has dropped online, and you can check it out in the embed above. A poster has also been unveiled; that can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Days after A24 released the first image from Ari Aster’s Eddington, the film got another exciting look. The first trailer for Eddington has officially been released, and it will serve as the follow-up to Beau Is Afraid, the 2023 mind-twisting psychological thriller starring Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Ryan. Aster will reunite with Phoenix for Eddington, which also stars Emmy nominee Pedro Pascal and two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone. The film is a contemporary Western following a standoff between a small-town sheriff and a mayor that sparks a powder keg of a matchup in the small town of Eddington, New Mexico. The trailer is set almost entirely on social media, with characters from the film providing their input on socioeconomic issues like the Covid-19 pandemic. Eddington will also star Austin Butler, who recently featured in Dune: Part Two, and Luke Grimes, the Yellowstone veteran who is also known for his work on Fifty Shades of Grey.
