After nearly three decades, “Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel” is coming to an end at HBO.
The investigative sports series has been hosted by Bryant Gumbel since 1995.
“Since day one at ‘Real Sports’ we’ve consistently tried to look beyond the scoreboard and focus instead on the many societal issues inherent in the world of sports,” Gumbel said in a statement. “In the process, we’ve had the opportunity to tell complex stories about race, gender, class, opportunity and so much more. Being able to do so at HBO for almost three decades has been very gratifying. I’m proud of the imprint we’ve made, so I’m ready to turn the page. Although goodbyes are never easy, I’ve decided that now’s the time to move on.”

Netflix may have agreed to a licensing deal to import HBO originals recently, but its latest moves might have Warner Bros. Discovery crying foul and looking for a referee. The world’s largest streamer has announced it has secured the rights to a new docuseries following the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team. The show will feature veteran champions like Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe — who recently announced that 2023 would be her last World Cup — 18-year-old newcomer Alyssa Thompson, as well as U.S. Women’s World Cup Team first-timers Sofia Huerta, Lynn Williams, and Kristie Mewis.

It took the calendar hitting March, but the heart of awards season has finally arrived. The Oscar nominations are announced on March 15, days after the BAFTA Awards reveal its 2021 nominees. On March 24, the Producers Guild of America will hand out the 2021 PGA Awards, an often very reliable Best Picture indicator. Here’s everything to know about the 32nd annual PGA Awards, including the date of the ceremony and who is nominated.
When are the PGA Awards?
The 2021 PGA Awards will be announced on Wednesday, March 24. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the event was delayed and shifted to a virtual setting. Said PGA presidents Gail Berman and Lucy Fisher in a joint statement earlier this year, “Our 2021 PGA Awards will look different than previous years with a shift to a virtual presentation, but we’re excited by the opportunity to put on our show in a more accessible, personal, and entirely new way.

Over the weekend, the guilds really chimed in with their awards, potentially shaping the Oscar race in a big way. We saw the Ace Eddie, the Producers Guild of America, and the Screen Actors Guild hold their ceremonies, each of which impacted things, to one degree or another. As always, Ace, PGA, and SAG have some of the most direct crossover with Academy members, so what they think does hold water. Are any one of them the be all, end all? No, but they cumulatively represent a lot of what potential Oscar voters are thinking at the moment. So, you must give them credence. The big winner of the weekend was La La Land, though Hidden Figures has now created some interesting new dynamics to the race. That film took advantage of La La Land not being in SAG’s Best Ensemble lineup, beating out Moonlight for the prize. La La Land...

The Producers Guild of America has just finished handing out there awards with an extremely disappointing result: Adam McKay’s forgettable, didactic banking manual of a film known as The Big Short has taken the top prize, meaning it is now the frontrunner for the Best Picture Oscar.
As you know, the PGA and the Academy have agreed on the best film of the year 19 out of 26 times, including the last eight years in a row, but there’s still hope. The last film to win Best Picture with only five nominations was The Departed, but this is clearly not something of that caliber.
Then again, the Academy could just throw it something it doesn’t deserve, similar to when they...

In the trailer for Amazon's "The New Yorker Presents," a collage of short documentaries, scripted live-action, animation, comedy, poetry, and cartoons based on content from the 90-year-old magazine, the series promises, in essence, to reinvent what's long been called the "newsmagazine" program. Read More: "'Serial,' 'The Jinx,' 'Making a Murderer,' and the Rise of the Prestige Docuseries" The ranks have thinned in recent years, as the likes of "Dateline" (NBC) and "20/20" (ABC)—no more than true-crime pulp, at this point—have left the real reporting to "60 Minutes" (CBS) and "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" (HBO), but "The New Yorker Presents" suggests something of a sea-change. The interest in non-fiction programming is once again on the rise, and Amazon is itching to tap into it. Part of this task is translating the magazine's reputation for journalistic excellence into film form, which...

A regular feature on the HBO series "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel," Wanda Sykes stepped behind the "special commentary" pulpit to deliver a tongue-in-cheek, biting critique of violence within the Lgbtq community - specifically, where professional athletes are concerned - as only the comedian can. It's what she refers to as "the gay perspective on sports headlines." This episode of "Real Sports" aired last night on HBO. Watch and listen: ...

As Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel continues to mark its 20th anniversary with the help of comics, Billy Crystal wondered how to explain athletes’ bad behavior to his sports-loving grandchildren. “The truth is, in this age of Instagram and Facebook and Snapchat, we know way too much about athletes – and it’s their fault,” said Crystal, who last appeared on Real Sports when it premiered two decades ago. “They push a button and self destruct. I love Mickey Mantle. Would I…...

HBO's Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel has won a civil suit brought against it by Mitre Sports, the UK-based sports equipment maker that accused the show of defaming it in a 2008 broadcast. The episode explored the use of child labor in sweatshop conditions in India to produce the company's soccer balls. The jury in U.S. District Court in Manhattan voted 11-0 today in favor of Real Sports, finding that the show "did not broadcast in a grossly irresponsible manner false or…...

On Friday, HBO finally beat a defamation lawsuit over a Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel report on child labor in India. The lawsuit was brought in 2009 by Mitre Sports International, which claimed that its reputation as a leading advocate against child labor was damaged in a report that featured children stitching Mitre soccer balls. The trial lasted a month, but it took the jury less than six hours to clear HBO of wrongdoing. The jury decided that HBO wasn't grossly irresponsible in its report. HBO says in a statement, "We are delighted with the jury’s decision, which confirms what

Nine years after HBO producers began research about child labor in India, a jury is now set to deliver a report card on whether the network conducted responsible journalism. Mitre Sports International, one of the biggest soccer brands in the world, is suing HBO over a Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel report titled "Children of Industry" that aired in 2008 more than 100 times. The report was 22 minutes long and spotlighted young boys and girls stitching soccer balls for pennies or less, sometimes to pay off debts their parents had accrued. Disclaimer: You probably need to enjoy Chris Rock's stand-up to enjoy his explanation of why Major League Baseball is hemorrhaging both black fans and black players. And you might want to care about baseball to begin with, too. Because this very interesting argument, which Rock made for HBO's Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel, is told in monologue fashion, is peppered with expletives and sounds perfectly reasonable. "I'm an endangered species—a black baseball fan," he launches right in. The Brooklyn-raised comedian and filmmaker reminisces about the New York Mets' 1986 World Series win, featuring assists from Darryl Strawberry, Doc Gooden, Kevin Mitchell and Mookie Wilson, back when "20...

Ever since "The Hurt Locker" triumphed over "Avatar" at the 2010 Producers Guild Awards, it has been rather obvious to me that this precursor announcement is the skeleton key to understanding how the Oscar vote will likely play out. Why? Because — as we've noted a number of times — the PGA is the only group that shares the preferential ballot system the Academy employs. So what won this year? "Birdman" won, that's what. And for those who were chalking this up as a boring, telegraphed Oscar season… So, what does this mean for the rest of the season? It means, clearly, "Birdman" could well be poised to take the Best Picture Oscar next month. I, for one, thought "The Imitation Game" would be the one to unseat "Boyhood" this evening and assert itself as the industry favorite. I even thought "American Sniper" had an outside shot. I wasn't looking at "Birdman," though,...

Bryant Gumbel took aim at sports journalism in general during a panel for HBO’s “Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel” at the Television Critics Association on Thursday, slamming much of sports coverage as “terribly sycophantic.”
“You know, there’s so little of it practiced unfortunately, it seems to me,” Gumbel replied when asked about how sports journalism has changed over the years. “So much of what passes for sports coverage, in my opinion, is terribly sycophantic. We tend to not ask the same difficult questions of people in sports that we do of politicians or business people or even people in the entertainment industry.

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) added to the industry mix Monday morning with a list of 10 nominees to keep the awards season grist mill churning. "Gone Girl" popped up again, and it shouldn't be a surprise. It's one of the year's biggest hits. And speaking of hits, I had a hunch "Nightcrawler" would find a place after becoming such a well-liked, profitable success. There it sits. The question for both of these films is whether this on-going industry/guild love ends up translating to Oscar recognition. After the "Dragon Tattoo" rush a few years ago, I'm pretty much wait-and-see on stuff like this. Absent from the list was anything out of the Marvel Studios comic book factory, notable as both "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" were both on the top tier of box office earners in 2014. The former currently maintains the throne, though it...

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) have announced their film and television nominations for the 26th Annual Producers Guild Awards, with winners set to be announced on January 24 and they couldn't have come at a better time... for me at least. I have been spending the last couple of days working on my 2015 Oscar predictions, finally adding predictions for the categories I had not yet set live and putting final touches on those I've had live since March of last year. The Oscar nomination ballots close this coming Thursday, January 8 and you better believe I'm looking at this list to get a better idea of what the industry is thinking. Overall, there aren't any real surprises, though one film continues to make a strong big for a nomination, that being Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler, which has continued to perform well in the precursor nominations. We also see a nomination for...

Paired with its documentary feature nominations, the PGA announced this Monday morning which television shows, specials, and digital series that will compete in the 26th Annual Producers Guild Awards. The PGA Awards nominations honor a little bit of everything, including "Breaking Bad," "Cosmos," "Last Week with John Oliver," "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," and the third season of YouTube’s "Video Game High School." Can’t blame the guild for shallow picks. The PGA Awards major TV category, Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, went to the award-devouring programs we know and love. "Game of Thrones," "Breaking Bad," "House of Cards," "True Detective," and "Downton Abbey," will all compete for top honors. On the comedy side, the PGA honored the entire spectrum of laughs: The genre-bending "Louie" and "Orange Is the New Black" facing off against sitcom staples "Modern Family" and "The Big Bang Theory," with "Veep" making fun of them all...
