Emmy winning English actress Jean Marsh passed away yesterday as a result of complications from dementia. She was 90.
She terrorized many ’80s kids as the head-switching princess Mombi in Return to Oz and the evil queen Bavmorda in Willow.
Marsh’s other genre roles include with Alfred Hitchcock‘s Frenzy, haunted house classic The Changeling, Dark Places opposite Christopher Lee, and the Twilight Zone episode “The Lonely,” in which she played a lifelike robot.
She also co-created and starred in the acclaimed period drama “Upstairs, Downstairs,” for which she won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
Other notable roles among Marsh’s 100+ credits include “Doctor Who,” Cleopatra, and The Eagle Has Landed.

Jean Marsh, who played Bavmorda, the evil queen in 1988’s Willow, and the head-swapping Mombi in 1985’s Return to Oz, has passed away.
Through her work in both Willow and Return to Oz, Jean Marsh left a genuine mark on young viewers, playing a biting antagonist that embodies the evil spirit which presses down on our heroes. Yet, her brief appearance via archival footage for the short-lived Willow series was a most welcome tribute. She would even earn a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress for Willow. And that she could stand out in Return to Oz – a movie crammed with nightmarish images – really says something.
Other notable big screen roles for Jean Marsh include 1980’s The Changeling, Alfred Hitchcock’s Frenzy (1972), horror film Dark Places (1973), and Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s epic Cleopatra (1963).
While most of us here may remember Jean Marsh for her work in film, she was predominantly featured on the small screen.

The fans want it, the actors involved with both franchises want it, and studio higher-ups at Marvel and Sony have promised that it will happen some day. Even so, after six movies featuring the characters releasing under the Sony Pictures banner over the past few years, we have yet to see Venom and Spider-Man interact on the big screen.
Despite rumors that Tom Hardy and Tom Holland were set to show up in each other's franchises at various points, the closest we've come to any kind of crossover is Eddie Brock getting (briefly) zapped to MCU’s Earth-616 thanks to Doctor Strange’s botched spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
While speaking to The Playlist, Hardy confirmed that there were early plans in place for some kind of Spidey/Venom crossover movie, and it came very close to happening.

Christopher Judge was arguably the most recognizable aspect of "Stargate Sg-1." As a '90s kid who remembers the show being on-air around the late-90s/early-2000s, I can say that while I knew nothing about the show itself (my only knowledge of the franchise was Roland Emmerich's 1994 "Stargate" movie ) I vividly recall the image of Judge's Teal'c and his golden forehead tattoo. The Jaffa warrior and his unique look was just part of the general cultural scenery of the time.
Now, having become more familiar with "Sg-1," it's become clear just how important to the series Judge's character was. Judge was a series lead but he also wrote three episodes: season 6's "The Changeling," season 7's "Birthright," and season 8's "Sacrifices." He also reprised the role of Teal'c in two episodes of the sequel series "Stargate Atlantis" and in the direct-to-dvd movies "The Ark of Truth" and "Continuum.

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Survivors", an underrated episode, the U.S.S. Enterprise arrives at a remote colony on the planet Delta Rana IV, responding to a distress call. Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) finds that the entire planet is dead, an uninhabitable desert wasteland. Mysteriously, however, there is a single house left standing, located in a small, inhabitable bubble. Several Enterprise crew members beam down to investigate and find a well-maintained lawn surrounding a completely untouched manse. The officers are greeted by Kevin and Rishon Uxbridge (John Anderson and Anne Haney), a kindly elderly couple who welcome them inside for tea.
The Uxbridge's do not seem to fully acknowledge that the rest of their planet has been completely wasted. They said they witnessed an attack by aggressive aliens called the Husnock but were unaware they were the only survivors. The longer the Enterprise says, the stranger things become.

Stream the haunting new adaptation, plus a never-before-seen extended version, starting Friday, Feb. 21.
I absolutely loved “Nosferatu”. It’s everything a horror remake should be - respectful of the original while making its own mark. Bill Skarsgård’s voice as Nosferatu is unreal - guttural, chilling, and completely inhuman. The whole movie is just the right kind of creepy, never leaning on cheap jump scares but instead building tension through eerie visuals, unsettling silence, and incredible performances. Few remakes actually live up to their predecessors, but this one does. And very soon, it’ll be added to my list of best Dracula movies to stream. You can stream “Nosferatu” exclusively on Peacock starting Friday, Feb. 21.

One of the most enduring heroes in all of science fiction is James Tiberius Kirk, protagonist of "Star Trek: The Original Series" and its accompanying films. Iconically played by William Shatner for much of the character's history, Kirk's legacy has spread into subsequent "Star Trek" shows and movies. While actors like "Star Trek" 2009's Chris Pine and "Star Trek: Discovery" cast member Paul Wesley have provided their own modern depictions of Kirk, Shatner's confidently assured captain is still the gold standard for the character. As the captain of the USS Enterprise, Kirk leads his crew to explore the galaxy and spread the United Federation of Planets' ethos of peaceful coexistence.
For the foundations of what makes Kirk such an effective sci-fi character, there are plenty of "Tos" episodes highlighting his qualities and Shatner's performance. These range from showing the more action-ready side of the venerable Starfleet officer to his more vulnerable and compassionate moments.

Star Trek has a good deal of leeway when it comes to killing someone off. Alien planets, high technology, and general outer space weirdness provide every conceivable reason for a fatality. It can often present an intriguing mystery for the crew to spend an episode or two solving. Explanations require some delicacy in order to fit with canon and make logical sense, but beyond that, there's no limit to the plausible explanations for how someone might die.
Even so, no franchise is perfect, and the sheer volume of stories that Star Trek has told over the years means that explanations sometimes fail. On more than one occasion, characters have been killed off in ways that help the plot work, but make very little sense in retrospect. Most of the time, it comes with a reasonable trade-off, and the ensuring story is strong enough to justify the plot hole. Despite that,...

Quick Links What is Changeling About? What is the True Story Behind Changeling? Clint Eastwood Shows Empathy With Changeling Changeling Deserved Better
There are very few feelings as goosebump-inducing as when a movie fades to black and an afterword fades in. After 2 hours of living in this fictional world, a truth bomb is dropped on the viewer. Everything depicted in the film they just watched actually happened. The five simple words "based on a true story" carry so much weight that filmmakers have even begun lying about it. Films like The Strangers and Fargo claim to be based on true stories when, in fact, they are completely fabricated from beginning to end. Those two films are fantastic in their own right, but they can never quite match the exhilaration of seeing a genuinely true story flawlessly and faithfully translated to the silver screen. There are a lot of fantastic contenders...

Year after year, one genre continues to pull audiences into the lobbies of cinemas around the world. While its stars might not often be up for major awards, they are heroes to the fandoms who have their own terms for the best in the biz. With so many subgenres, horror has something for everyone. Although directors like Peter Medak and Nicolas Roeg began exploring the sub-horror-genre of family trauma decades ago in their films The Changeling and Don’t Look Now, respectively, the last decade has ushered in a brand-new lineup of directors exploring close-to-home themes. In 2018, Ari Aster made his feature-length directorial debut with one of these projects, a movie that will stick with viewers long after the credits roll. Are you filled with intrigue? Well, luckily, Aster’s breakthrough pairing with A24, Hereditary, is coming to one of the most popular streamers, as it will celebrate its Netflix debut...

While The Twilight Zone remains the most iconic anthology series of all time, the best Tales from the Crypt episodes stand up well with a very different feeling. Unlike the original anthology series, which focused on morality tales and a look at horrific stories, Tales from the Crypt told its horror tales with a wink and a grin. The main focus of the series, opened each episode by the Crypt Keeper, was to deliver horrific, demonic, and disturbing tales, but always with a look at making horror fans smile with a mix of humor and irony in each episode.
Tales from the Crypt also shares much in common with The Twilight Zone in bringing fans some familiar faces signing on for single episodes and delivering performances they never got the chance to deliver when they appeared in more mainstream movies and television shows. Faces like Demi Moore, Lance Henriksen, Kevin Dillon,...

Though Venom: The Last Dance performed a lot better than previous Ssu movies Madame Web and Morbius, it still ended up finishing its theatrical run as the lowest-grossing film of the Venom trilogy.
The Kelly Marcel-directed superhero flick took in just under $140 million domestically and another $333 million from overseas markets for a global total of around $472 million. With a reported budget of around $120 million, this is far from a bad result for Sony Pictures, but it doesn't come close to the $850 million the original Venom made in 2018, and also falls just short of Let There Be Carnage's $500 million.
This was Sony's final Venom movie (supposedly), but the studio is rumoured to have big plans for the villainous Knull and Agent Venom.
The Last Dance hits Digital platforms this week.
It's much better news for Universal's Wicked, which is now 2024’s fourth-biggest domestic release behind Inside Out 2...

Venom: The Last Dance may not have made as big a splash at the box office as the previous movies in the franchise, but the final part of Sony Pictures' trilogy is proving difficult to knock off the top spot.
The Last Dance took in $16.2 million from 3,905 North American theaters, which was enough to fend off competition from A24’s horror thriller Heretic and Lionsgate’s family friendly The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.
The studio's latest Ssu movie - which sits at 41% on Rotten Tomatoes - has now grossed $279.4 million overseas and $394.2 million globally on a relatively modest budget of $120 million.
This might well be the last Venom movie, but a recent rumor claimed that Sony is developing an Agent Venom film.
In the comics, Agent Venom was Peter Parker's former bully turned friend Eugene "Flash" Thompson, who bonded with the Venom Symbiote after losing his legs in service of his country.

Sony Pictures made it clear that Venom: The Last Dance would be the final part of a trilogy, and while the movie did appear to wrap-up Eddie Brock and his Symbiote pal's story, we may now know how the studio is planning to keep the franchise going.
According to scooper Daniel Richtman, an Agent Venom movie is in development.

Sony Pictures has released a new TV spot for Venom: The Last Dance, and it gives us a first official look at the team of Symbiotes that assembles towards the end of the movie to battle the Xenophage.
Though some of these Symbiotes are named - Juno Temple's Doctor Payne becomes Agony, for example - others seem to be amalgamations of characters from the comics, or possibly brand-new creations. One does definitely seem to be based on Toxin, however, and the final two appear to be versions of Phage and Lasher.
Check out the new teaser below.
The review embargo for The Last Dance lifted last week, and the critical consensus was not overly positive. Though some are referring to this final instalment in the franchise as the best of the trilogy, the movie held at 37% on Rotten Tomatoes for a while before rising to 39% based on 158 reviews.

The bungling of Trick ‘r Treat by Warner Bros. — shelving it after well-received festival screenings before unceremoniously dumping it straight to DVD in 2009 — is well-documented, but had it received a traditional theatrical release and underperformed, there’s a chance it may have never entered the cultural zeitgeist. Instead, its authentic cult roots allowed it to blossom into the contemporary classic we celebrate today.

Tom Hardy personally requested his longtime friend to take on the directing duties for Venom: The Last Dance. Hardy and Kelly Marcel have collaborated on the Venom trilogy for over seven years. In this latest installment, Marcel had the opportunity to make her directorial debut, an achievement in which Hardy had a role to play.

Marcel and Hardy were friends even before they worked together on Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. They met each other when Hardy hosted an acting workshop near the video rental shop in London where Marcel worked part-time in the late 2000s. He brought her in to do uncredited rewrites for his 2008 British film, Bronson.

Sony Music Masterworks today announces the release of Venom: The Last Dance (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) with music by composer Dan Deacon.
Available everywhere now, the album features an original score composed by Deacon for the final film in the Sony Pictures Venom trilogy. Combining dynamic, emotional orchestral movements with bold, action-packed synthesized sequences, Deacon’s score is the perfect musical accompaniment to the final chapter of the franchise. Venom: The Last Dance debuts in theaters nationwide today from Sony Pictures – tickets here.
Of the score, Dan Deacon says, “Comic books were core part of my childhood and some of my fondest memories of being a kid. I was 7 and an avid comic collector when Venom first appeared. I got immediately obsessed with him and the symbiote backstory. Returning bottles and cans for 5¢ each, I saved money to collect as many earlier appearances and key books as I could get my hands on,...

When it comes to ’80s horror, classics like The Shining, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th often steal the spotlight.
But for every iconic slasher and haunted hotel, there’s a treasure trove of forgotten horror films waiting in the shadows, ready to be rediscovered.
These aren’t the movies everyone talks about at Halloween parties — they’re the ones you stumbled upon at the video store, rented on a whim, and then never forgot.
(Universal Pictures/Screenshot)
From blood-soaked summer camps and sinister sororities to mind-bending nightmares and haunted mansions, the ’80s delivered a golden era of inventive, over-the-top horror.
And while Freddy and Jason were busy hogging the limelight, there were plenty of other creepy gems flying under the radar.
Whether you’re looking for gory slashers, supernatural chills, or just something gloriously weird, TV Fanatic has got you covered!

This winter, Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie will be vying for her third Oscar nomination. The movie star previously won Best Supporting Actress for Girl, Interrupted in 2000 and was nominated for Best Actress for The Changeling in 2009. Now, she's going for another Best Actress nod for her surely spectacular performance in the upcoming Netflix movie Maria.
From director Pablo Larraín and writer Stephen Knight, Maria made its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in August 2024, when the film was acquired by Netflix for distribution in the United States. So far, the film has been well-received by critics, currently holding a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes before its streaming release in December.
Netflix will release Maria in the United States on Wednesday, Dec. 11 following a limited theatrical release over the Thanksgiving holiday on Wednesday, Nov. 27. Additional territories will receive the movie in 2025 when it's released theatrically in Italy, the United Kingdom,...

With Venom: The Last Dance set to hit theaters this weekend, Sony Pictures has released the first couple of clips from the threequel.
The first sees Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) enter a casino, as the symbiote excitedly uses the last of their cash on a slot machine (he doesn't react well to losing). The second clip is a little more revealing, as we learn that Doctor Payne (Juno Temple) has seemingly managed to separate Eddie from his alien pal.
The review embargo for The Last Dance lifted last night, and the critical consensus was not overly positive. Though some are referring to this final instalment in the franchise as the best of the trilogy, the movie has now dropped to 37% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 71 reviews.
This places the movie higher than 2018's Venom (30%), but significantly lower than Let There Be Carnage, which sits at a more respectable 57% on the review aggregator.

An image and a brief promo clip from Venom: The Last Dance have leaked online (there's a good chance they're from the same teaser), giving us a new look at the villainous Knull. We also get to hear the God of the Symbiotes speak for the first time.
Possible spoilers ahead.
We're not sure how big a plot point this will be, but Knull is believed to be holding the All-Black the Necrosword in this still.
In the comics, All-Black was an extremely powerful weapon created by Knull and tempered inside the head of the Celestial now known as Knowhere. The sword was imbued with the power to slay gods, and has been wielded by a number of characters, including Gorr the God Butcher.
The new footage is only a few seconds long, but we do get to hear Knull (Andy Serkis) speak for the first time.

Pop megastar Megan Thee Stallion, real name Megan Pete, played herself for a guest appearance in the third episode of Marvel Studios' She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Disney+ series, before returning for a twerking session with the Emerald Amazon (Tatiana Maslany) in the post-credits scene.
This sequence came in for criticism after being deemed a bit too silly/goofy by some, but others felt it was perfectly in-keeping with the tone of the series and were able to have fun with it.
Now, Stallion has joined forces with another Marvel character for a new teaser promoting this month's Venom: The Last Dance.
In the video, Megan and Venom growl at each other for a bit while sticking their tongues out. We'll let you decide if it's funny or not! We also have a new "One Week" TV spot.

Angelina Jolie will receive the Maltin Modern Master Award at the 40th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the festival announced on Wednesday. Her latest film, “Maria,” which was directed by Pablo Larraín and in which she plays famed opera singer Maria Callas, will be released in select theaters on Nov. 27 before streaming on Netflix on Dec. 11.
The Maltin Modern Master Award is named after film critic Leonard Maltin, who has been a moderator at the Santa Barbara film festival for many years, and it recognizes an “individual who has enriched our culture through accomplishments in the motion picture industry,” according to the festival. “Angelina Jolie makes bold choices, both as an actress and as a director,” Maltin said via statement. “She sets the bar high in both disciplines and always comes through.”

Despite negative reviews and a mixed response from the majority of comic book fans, the previous Venom movies both performed very well at the box office. Could the final instalment in the trilogy, this month's Venom: The Last Dance, buck the trend?
Updated box office tracking is in, and according to Deadline, Sony Pictures' threequel looks set for a $70 million opening weekend when it arrives in theaters on October 25.
While this wouldn't be a bad debut by any means and would still be the second best opening of 2024 for a comic-book feature after Deadpool & Wolverine's $211.4 million (not that there was much in the way of competition out there), it would mark the lowest opening of the franchise. The first Venom took in $80.2 million in 2028, while the more positively-received sequel, 2021's Let There Be Carnage, made $90 million.
We really don't see Venom 3 flopping given the popularity of the earlier movies, but if it underperforms,...

If you thought that horse from the trailer would be the only animal that gets taken over by the Symbiote in Venom: The Last Dance, think again!
Sony Pictures has released a new TV spot for the upcoming Ssu threequel, giving us a first official glimpse of Venomized frog and fish (Vrog and Vish?), along with another look at Venom taking down some goons.
It looks like we will only see these Venomized aquatic creatures in a brief sequence with the Symbiote jumping from host to host, which probably isn't going to be much of an issue for many fans - unless you happen to be more interested in the adventures of Frog Venom than Eddie Brock... which might well be a possibility, come to think of it.
Check out the new teaser along with some other recent promotional material at the links below.

The final trailer for Sony Pictures' Venom: The Last Dance dropped the surprising reveal that Knull is going to be introduced in the threequel. Though the character's face was obscured, recent rumors have claimed that Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings; Black Panther) will take on the role via motion-capture.
Sony/Marvel are believed to have big plans for this powerful villain going forward, but what can we expect from his big-screen debut?
According to Mttsh... not very much!
The scooper is reporting that The God of the Symbiotes won't have a significant role in Venom 3. In fact, Eddie Brock/Venom (Tom Hardy) won't even encounter the character in the movie. Knull will appear in a couple of scenes in space (possibly imprisoned on Klyntar), and will also be a part of the post-credits scene.
Details on the stinger are sparse, but there are whispers that it could lay...

‘Tis the season to draw viewing inspiration from all things Halloween, and haunted houses are one of the key staples of the holiday. And for good reason, too, as few things are as inherently terrifying as an invasion of the very place where you’re meant to feel safest: your home.
Dealing with a paranormal presence isn’t quite as easy to deal with as masked maniacs or a more tangible threat. It’s often a fear of the unknown that induces the most nerve-fraying anxiety, and a haunted house is full of unknowns. This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to one of horror’s most foundational subgenres: the haunted house movie.
These five titles range from classic haunted house fare to modern frights that reinterpret what a haunted house can be. All aim to induce maximum frights, perfect for this Halloween season.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

A surprisingly clever riff on a familiar recipe, Prime Video’s “House of Spoils” seems like a dark fairy tale you could make better yourself — at first. Part “The Bear” and part “The Witch,” this supernatural horror outing follows a nameless Chef (Ariana DeBose) in an allegory about ambitious women that lacks bite but isn’t without its own special sauce.
Writer/directors Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy broke out with their tenacious crime thriller “Blow the Man Down” in 2019 and show a well-earned confidence in this imperfect but still occasionally enchanting first-time genre effort. The duo’s second feature builds on a bare-bones concept that feels more rudimentary than rustic much of the time, and yet, the filmmakers’ decisive presentation is enjoyable enough as an entrée served straight to streaming.

The actor who has reportedly been cast as the villainous Knull in Venom: The Last Dance was revealed last night, and we may now know how he will bring the character to life on screen.
Since this is something the studio may be attempting to keep under wraps until the movie is in theaters, we're still being careful about (potential) spoilers.
According to Daniel Richtman and several other online scoopers, Knull will played by none other than Andy Serkis.
Serkis - who directed Venom: Let There Be Carnage - is "expected to reprise the role in future Sony/Marvel projects, which means we could be seeing a whole lot more of Knull." This gels with previous rumors that Knull will be the main villain of Spider-Man 4, with Venom (Tom Hardy) joining forces with Peter Parker (Tom Holland) to battle the potentially world-ending threat.

The rise of spirtualism, mediums, and séances in the 1800s is an endlessly fascinating topic, especially when you consider that, for all of the people that were committing fraud, what if some of them were really contacting the dead? Having read the first issue of Séance in the Asylum, I am very excited to read more, and I was just as thrilled to catch up with Clay McLeod Chapman to talk all about the new series.
The mid-late 1800s are such a fascinating time when it comes to mysticism and the occult. What inspired the idea behind Séance in the Asylum?
I had two guiding lights for Séance in the Asylum. First, I’ve always been a fan of the Fox Sisters. I’m dying to write something for them, about them, some day. I had a feature in development for years and it just fizzled… but I’ve been...

Despite mostly negative reviews, the Venom movies performed very well at the box office, and it looks like Sony Pictures' trilogy-capper, Venom: The Last Dance, might end up being an even bigger success than both previous instalments.
According to BoxOfficePro.com's long-range forecasts, Venom 3 could be looking at a domestic opening weekend in the $80M – $120M range. There's obviously a lot of room between those numbers, but should The Last Dance's debut come in on the higher end, it will surpass its predecessor's openings and could potentially claim one of the best box office bow's of 2024.

The final trailer for Venom: The Last Dance has arrived, setting the stage for Tom Hardy's last outing as the fan-favorite villain-turned-superhero, and finally revealing the film's ultra-powerful villain: Knull.
No word on who's playing the God of the symbiotes or the extent of his role, but it does look like we'll be getting a comic-accurate depiction. As for his goal in the threequel, it sounds like he'll be hunting Venom down and sending every symbiote in his arsenal after the dynamic duo, in an attempt to retrieve something important, which we're going to guess is the All-Black (or the Sony's Spider-Man Universe version of it), although we'll have to wait and see.
After that, there's plenty of new footage in the trailer to enjoy, especially lots of gnarly new symbiotes. While characters like Toxin seem like a given to pop up, it still remains up in the...

Grief is a common theme in horror as it is one of the most terrifying aspects of being human that everyone will inevitably have to face. We are hardwired to prolong, or at least not think about our mortality, and films that explore our deep-seated collective fear of losing our loved ones will almost always cut deep. This fear must resonate deeply with both Martin Scorsese and Guillermo del Toro, as they both have named the 1980 haunted house classic The Changeling as one of their favorite horror films. Starring the phenomenal George C. Scott, The Changeling is a moody and atmospheric meditation on the trauma of losing one's family. It is clear from the first few minutes that George C. Scott's protagonist, John Russell (Scott), is suffering a deep break from reality as a result of a tragedy that no father or husband should ever have to face. The film...

Another day, another small-town mayor refusing to acknowledge that his town could be in grave danger. That's the gist of newly ordered-to-series Widow's Bay, an upcoming 10-episode horror-comedy set for Apple TV+.
1428 Elm has learned that the show will be created by Katie Dippold, best known for writing The Heat, starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. Filmmaker Hiro Murai (Atlanta) will direct the pilot episode.
Apple didn't share much else about Widow's Bay just yet, unfortunately, except that it will be produced in-house by Apple Studios and the series is set in a cursed New England town. As mentioned above, something supernatural starts to threaten town residents but the mayor refuses to believe anything is wrong. Sounds like maybe the mayor from Amity Island relocated.
Dippold is credited as the showrunner and creator of the new series, which she also executive produces. Murai will executive produce as well, alongside Carver Karaszewski and Claudia Shin.

“Angelina! Angelina! Angelina!”
The Venice Film Festival loves its movie stars, and Angelina Jolie was the toast of Italy on Thursday night. The actress wept during an eight-minute standing ovation at the Sala Grande Theatre at the world premiere of “Maria,” Pablo Larraín’s biographical drama about the Greek opera singer Maria Callas.
The outpouring of love and emotion brings to mind another standing ovation in Venice that launched the Oscar campaign for Brendan Fraser in “The Whale,” as he sobbed through the applause that cemented a career comeback in 2022.
Jolie was similarly taken by the rapturous response, wiping away tears and at time turning her face away from the cheering as she was overcome by emotion. She hugged Larraín and the cast of the film, which is sure to be an Oscar contender, putting Jolie in the best actress race for the first time in 15 years.
Netflix will release “Maria” later this year.

Angelina Jolie has staked her claim to be part of the Best Actress Oscar conversation here at the Venice Film Festival following her well-received performance in Maria.
Pablo Larraín’s biopic follows the life story of the world’s greatest opera singer, Maria Callas, during her final days in 1970s Paris.
Jolie in a press conference today said she spent seven months preparing for the role: “Everybody here knows, I was terribly nervous,” she said of learning to sing opera. “I spent almost seven months training because when you work with Pablo you can’t do anything by half. He demands, in the most wonderful way, that you really do the work and you really learn and train.”
Critics have perhaps been more enthusiastic about Jolie’s performance than the film itself, which could prove challenging for the actress’s Academy prospects, but Netflix picked the film up this week...

"He's dead, Jim" is a famous phrase from Star Trek spoken by Dr. Leonard McCoy, used bluntly to report deaths. McCoy said this iconic line only four times on Star Trek: The Original Series, though it became well-known. Some variations of "He's dead" were spoken more frequently, often by McCoy, the ship's Chief Medical Officer.
Several iconic phrases from Star Trek: The Original Series have made their way into the pop culture lexicon, including, "He's dead, Jim." Most often spoken by Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley), this phrase was Bones' rather blunt way of reporting a death to Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner). While "Live long and prosper" and "Beam me up, Scotty" may be the most famous of the phrases to originate from Star Trek, some variation of "He's dead" was spoken more times throughout the series than either of those lines.
