In addition to turning heads with its Rebirth initiative last year, DC made a bold statement by launching a new imprint known as Young Animal. Sprung from the mind of Gerard Way (yes, the guy from My Chemical Romance), it’s granted quite the new perspective on the DC Universe. Some books in the line offer fresh takes on lesser known characters, while others serve up something new like Mother Panic. To be honest, that one has captured my attention more than any other because Gotham City could probably be considered my second home, but that’s a conversation for another day.
If one title could be considered what one would call a “flagship book” though, I’d have to say that it’d most certainly be Doom Patrol. Not only is it written by Way himself,...

You needn’t be gifted or amazing, just follow this advice.
Whatever your opinion of his Amazing Spider-Man movies, there’s no denying Marc Webb’s proficiency as a director. He’s been filming in some capacity since he was a kid and spent many years after college honing his craft helming music videos (regular clients included Green Day, Ashlee Simpson, and My Chemical Romance) before making his feature debut in 2009 with the hit romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer.
Now, following his two Spidey installments, he’s back to directing smaller movies, two of which arrive this year: Gifted, which opens in theaters on Friday, and Amazon’s The Only Living Boy in New York, which first hits cinemas in August. In the following collection of tips to aspiring filmmakers, he shares advice on working on different scales, making mistakes, the importance of collaboration, and giving actors freedom.

As far as “unsolved mystery” horror films go, The Axe Murders Of Villisca is nothing more than generic at best. Why prey on such a famed case in – wait, let’s rewind quick. Are you even aware of this tragic Iowa slaughterfest? Let’s revisit June 9th, 1912. According to legend, a family was brutally murdered at night by a axe-wielding maniac who was never arrested. One by one, the Moore family was beaten to death – some with the axe’s bluntest side, others hacked and slashed. A traveling Presbyterian minister confessed to the murders, claiming he heard windmills in his head before blacking out – but no convictions were made, and the deed went unpunished.

While Dillon Francis has won over listeners with his hard hitting moombah rhythms and his knack for creating dancefloor hits, his enduring comedic charm has served as a primary reason fans have come to love the DJ. Who could forget his hilarious antics as DJ Hanzel, or his one-sided conversations with his pinata Gerald? The fun doesn’t stop there though, as Francis has just unveiled his latest character: Emo Preston.
As you might expect from the name, Emo Preston is a downtempo character with an “idgafos” sort of apathy to the world. In his own words, Preston explains that he loves both crying and My Chemical Romance, all with his bangs pushed aside in a manner that would make teenage Myspace users circa the early 2000’s proud. Check out a montage of Emo Preston clips below.

Steve Aoki is bringing back an emo classic with a fun electronic twist. The DJ was sought after by former rock band My Chemical Romance to remix one of their signature tracks, “Welcome to the Black Parade,” and the result is something much better than you’d expect.
Aoki essentially turns the epic pop-rock opera into dance party fodder, with synths, drops and drums galore. The song was pretty dark and somber to begin with, but this remix somehow makes it even more eerie as Gerard Way’s vocals linger beneath the frantic instrumentation.
Aoki and My Chemical Romance may initially sound like a strange combination, but he’s got a thing for rock music. After all, Fall Out Boy featured on his record, Neon Future I, and he also remixed Blink-182’s single, “Bored To Death,” last summer. The pairing with My Chemical Romance was a perfect match, and the remix shows it effortlessly.

Next month will mark ten years since My Chemical Romance released their now-iconic album, The Black Parade. With songs like “Teenagers” and “Famous Last Words,” the record has cemented itself as an essential album within the genre, so obviously, it’s cause for celebration. Rock Sound Magazine will be releasing a tribute album for The Black Parade, featuring various artists covering each one of the songs on the record, and today we get to hear Twenty One Pilots’ rendition of “Cancer.”
My Chemical Romance’s “Cancer” is a heartbreaking song to begin with, and probably one of the most emotional songs in the band’s catalog. Somehow, Twenty One Pilots have managed to make the song even darker than it already is, and nobody could have taken the track over better than they did. We look back at an often-overlooked part of the Ghostbusters legacy: it's Extreme Ghostbusters...
There was a time when no one cared about Ghostbusters. It was the late 90s - the pre-Pokemon, post-Mighty Morphin Power Rangers days to be exact. Nobody’s kid was exactly clamouring for a sequel, reboot, or a Ghostbusters continuation of any kind - except for Dan Aykroyd, who was practically lobbying for a third instalment while sitting front row at the Ghostbusters II premiere. Which is why we have this: an awkwardly timed, tonally disruptive Ghostbusters animated series.
Enter a brand new cartoon that picked up the sticky, ectoplasm-covered mantle of The Real Ghostbusters and wore it slightly askew to evoke that wholesome sense of 1990s irreverence: Extreme Ghostbusters.
Living up to its name, Xgb was extreme indeed. One glance at its radically inclusive team line-up is all you need to notice that.

Not too sure about Harley Quinn’s skimpy, “Daddy’s Lil Monster” get-up in Suicide Squad? Well, it’s not been used as a shortcut; in the pre-production phase for the supervillain team-up, Margot Robbie, director David Ayer and the costume department actually went through every major costume Harley has had. Talking to Hello Giggles, Robbie explained that they didn’t land on the look she sports in the film without serious consideration.
“Oh, we tried on every variation of the costume. I cannot emphasis enough how many outfits, and how many variations of the Harley Quinn costume we tried. We tried the court jester costume, we tried the corset and skirt, we tried leather pants, we tried literally every type of costume possible for her. I really love where we ended up.”

Despite the fact that "All I Want for Christmas" was recently dethroned from its spot atop the "Most-Played Christmas Songs in Retail Stores" list, replaced by The Shins' version of "Wonderful Christmastime," there's no denying that Mariah Carey's tune is the most enduring addition to the Christmas canon from the past quarter-century - at least. Now director James Gunn, who selected the record's songs and even wrote them into the script, has shared a playlist for a new mixtape, Awesome Mix Volume Zero, which features music by more contemporary artists, like Andrew W.K., the Old 97's and Lyrics Born, than the Seventies-centric artists of its predecessor.

But sometimes you end up losing an incredible album track, or debut single, for the sake of a newer album track that sucks. Unless you wait...

2013 was a big year for comics, both mainstream and independent. DC celebrated Superman’s 75th birthday with the launch of the much hyped (and delayed) Superman Unchained by superstar creators Scott Snyder and Jim Lee. There were also the big crossover events “Trinity War” and its follow up Forever Evil which will continue into 2014. This year also marked the return of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman and other great Vertigo series, like Scott Snyder’s The Wake and Jeff Lemire’s Trillium.Marvel celebrated the X-Men’s 50th anniversary with the time-traveling event “Battle of the Atom” and the launch of Brian Wood’s X-Men, which featured an all female lineup. Marvel had its share of big events (Age of Ultron, Infinity), but it also found room for quirky, offbeat books, like Hawkeye, Young Avengers, and Superior Foes of Spider-Man. 2013 was an especially huge year for Image Comics. It enlisted big name creators like Matt Fraction,...

On Sunday at 6:25pm, Channel 5 is screening the third of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films. With two fantastic Spidey films in the bag, they couldn't mess this one up... could they?
• Peter Bradshaw's review of Spider-Man 3

"Why would I want to push you away? I love you!" - Peter Parker
When Spider-Man was released in 2002, it almost singlehandedly laid the groundwork for the current superhero boom. Smart, funny, bold and kinetic, its influence can still be felt in everything from Batman Begins to The Avengers. 2004's Spider-Man 2 went even further; roping in Michael Chabon to enrich the themes and deepen the characters in a way that's pretty much become standard for modern comic book films. And then came Spider-Man 3.

Kids In Glass Houses emerged in the wave of post Blink 182 pop-punk bands alongside You Me At Six, Simple Plan, All Time Low and Fall Out Boy. Hooks were falling from every pore as the albums ‘Smart Casual’ and ‘Dirt’ gained them increasingly more airplay and recognition. Then came the third album; ‘In Gold Blood.’ Hooks were still everywhere but the tone became more serious as the band seemed to be keen on moving towards a new direction. Frontman Aled Phillips said; “It’ll be a concept record, a big, grown-up rock record. It’s going to document a journey. I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s looking to be our most ‘mature’ album.” However it turned out that the album’s concept was to wear feathers at Sonisphere and try to be more like Lostprophets, and that’s never a good thing.

New comic book Wednesday has come and gone. The dust at your local comic shop has settled. An eerie silence descends as you finish reading your last superhero book of the week. Now it's time for something a little more sinister. Welcome to Bagged and Boarded: comic reviews of the sick, spooky, twisted and terrifying!
Breath of Bones: A Tale of the Golem No. 1
Horror comic mainstay Steve Niles (30 Days of Night) brings a new skew to the horrors of the Holocaust. Breath of Bones takes place in a small European village right before the Allied Forces storm Europe. A young boy, living with his grandparents, befriends a fallen pilot as his grandfather gives him a very important artifact: a tiny clay golem. This is the classic Jewish folk tale of the Golem made of clay that comes to life.

Even as Zack Snyder prepares to unleash "Man of Steel," the powerhouse director and producer has a comic book movie of a decidedly different bent in the pipeline.
The brand new trailer for next year's "300: Rise of an Empire" hit the web today. The movie sees Israeli born relative newcomer Noam Murro taking the reigns from "300" director Snyder, who stayed on as producer. Lena Headey was of course rightfully the subject of one of our "Hot People Looking Hot" features recently and she's returned as Queen Gorgo. Of course, most of the characters in "300" (spoiler alert) didn't make it to the final frame, so we've got a mostly new cast of oiled up beefcakes doing battle in this one.
Mortal-turned-god Xerxes (after whom the graphic novel was named) is once again played by Rodrigo Santoro. Xerxes leads an army of Persians on an invasion, which must be fended off by Greek general Themistocles,...

Not many bands can draw a crowd from so many generations. From 6 year olds in banners bigger than they are to teens with My Chemical Romance tattoos to middle age punks with Bad Religion jackets they are all being represented here today.
All Time Low are essentially a Blink 182 tribute band to the kids who were too young for the three piece. Their perky pop with guitars is entertaining enough although unoriginal. The more upbeat ‘Time Bomb’ and ‘Lost In Stereo’ go down best in a half empty stadium. Jack Barakat, per usual, lowers the tone with butt and your mum jokes and it just feels unnecessary and a tad creepy.
With a back catalogue like the Kaiser Chiefs it’s hard to not get a crowd singing. Ricky Wilson is on form running from corner to corner of the stage and up the frame work like a hyperactive child.

Has Twilight left us with vampire fatigue? As Byzantium emerges, James argues that there are plenty of stories left to tell in the lore...
Remember the My Chemical Romance song, Vampires Will Never Bore You? You probably don't because that wasn't the actual title of the track. Nevertheless, there's no reason why the theatrical rock troupe can't remix Vampires Will Never Hurt You with revised, more upbeat lyrics for a new cultural zeitgeist in order to assist the ailing undead.
The coffin-dwellers are suffering a public image crisis and an exhilarating, affirmative pop anthem would be the perfect thing to rally spirits. It might also attract armies of impassioned, hyper-emotional adolescents going through their teen goth rebellion phase. A mass macabre awareness campaign is called for and the vampires need fresh blood and fresh resolve to bare their fangs with fierce determination.

For hours -- sometimes days on end -- we’d spend our weekends and sneak in school nights to play video games. It was all for the love of adventure, our constant need to win, and often times we’d fallen in love with the characters we controlled. Yeah, some of them were animals, but that really didn’t matter when it came to matters of the heart. Even today those video game characters have continued to cause a hormonal overload in us because thanks to evolution, they’ve gotten even better looking. But even when some of them were pixelated guys and gals, they were still hot stuff.
10. Ms. Pac-Man
That little bow, those red boots. She can take on all the balls and then some.
9. Sora of Kingdom Hearts
While you might’ve went into "Kingdom Hearts" crushing on Mickey, you left yearning for Sora.

Going into this comic, I had no idea what to expect from the frontman of Slipknot and Stone Sour and an artist who doesn’t have a page on Comic Book Database. Gerard Way of recently broken up My Chemical Romance won an Eisner for Umbrella Academy, but Corey Taylor’s storytelling sputters in his comic book debut. The plot is by the numbers, and there are several lines of dialogue that even Hayden Christensen would refuse to utter. (“And then there was a ray of hope”, “It was gonna be a long journey”, “All that’s left to do is walk”) Conflict is introduced and then dialed back. Not even a good cliffhanger can salvage this story. Richard Clark and Dan Jackson’s solid work with landscape, colors, and some of the character...

With the recent breakup of My Chemical Romance and the reuniting of the Jonas Brothers, the dynamic of sibling bands has been frequently on my music radar these days. Sometimes the family relationship can strain a band and other times, it aids in keeping an outfit intact. Whether the rivalries occur or not, the music industry has undeniably been affected by the in-sync ways of these blood bonded bands. Oasis, The Kinks, Bee Gees, Acdc, The National, Tegan and Sara, Beach Boys, Jackson 5, and The Black Crowes have family connections within them and despite some notable tension (cough, cough Oasis), I believe their nature has been a key factor [ Read More ]

My Chemical Romance have posted a message on their site saying they've broken up. There's a quick sweep of nostalgia — "We've gotten to go places we never knew we would. We've been able to see and experience things we never imagined possible" — followed by a no-explanations-right-now kicker: "And now, like all great things, it has come time for it to end. Thanks for all of your support, and for being part of the adventure." The New Jersey rockers released four studio albums; 2006's The Black Parade is still solid. Update: Here are 2,200 mystical words from front man Gerard Way, ostensibly explaining the breakup.

New York — The chemistry is over: rock outfit My Chemical Romance has disbanded.
The New Jersey-based band announced Saturday that "it has come time for it to end." The foursome thanked fans in a statement and said the experience was "a true blessing."
My Chemical Romance's sound is a mix of alternative, punk rock and pop. Band members released their debut album in 2002 but really made a splash on the music scene in 2004 with the platinum-selling "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge." It featured the top-40 hit "Helena."
They followed that with another platinum effort in 2006, "The Black Parade," earning their first top-10 pop hit with the song "Welcome to the Black Parade."
The group said they've "shared the stage with people we admire, people we look up to, and best of all, our friends."
Group members included vocalist Gerard Way, bassist Mikey Way and guitarists Ray Toro and Frank Iero.

If you, Shockya readers, decide to form a band, I suggest auditioning your siblings. There is an undeniable charm about “family” bands. Just knowing the outfit is a group of brothers and/or sisters, I automatically think “aw” and typically once the band plays, the music is so naturally in-sync it’s hard to forget. My “family bands are awesome” case can be further supported by memorable albums from Kings Of Leon, Oasis (before the Gallagher brawl), Veronicas, Jackson 5, Inxs, Bee Gees, My Chemical Romance, Radiohead, AC/DC and 30 Seconds To Mars. I think I’ve made my point. Los Angeles rock band, Canto, will hopefully fall into these legendary sibling footsteps. [ Read More ]
