Oscar Snubs: 10 Actors Denied Their Worthy Oscar Best Actor and Best Actress Awards (In No Specific Order) Ethan Hawke
With four nominations and a league of amazing films under his belt, it is both a shame and a surprise that we haven’t seen an oscar in Ethan Hawke’s hands. Wearing many hats, Hawke is known for directing and writing alongside his acting career. My first introduction to Ethan Hawke was Reality Bites, also starring the intriguing Winona Ryder and Ben Stiller.
Quite a poignant film for these trying times, as the theme revolves around young adults trying to forge their path in a world where entry-level jobs are unpromising--even with a degree it seems bleak to find a respectable career coming out of college. A greasy-haired Ethan Hawke is the ultimate 90’s grunge heartthrob, a coffee-house guitarist filled...

Happy Awards Season 2021! The biggest night in the film industry, the Academy Awards, is not too far off at this point, with preliminary voting already underway, and the official nominations being announced in just one week. The recent Golden Globes (even with all their internal misfires) gave us a general indication of what kinds of films we should expect to be recognized, with the likes of 'Nomadland', 'Judas and the Black Messiah', 'The Trial of the Chicago 7', 'Minari', and 'Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom' appearing to be early favorites for the major awards. Every year there are many movies that release around the same time of year, close to awards season, all vying to get a coveted nomination. Some of these films are described as “Oscar bait” films, a term used to describe a few different kinds of films that all have one thing in common--their appeal to Oscar voters. These films fall under four categories: the historical drama, the musician biopic, the melodrama, and the quirky indie comedy.

Winning an Oscar by making us laugh. What a way to make a living!
What makes a performance “Oscar-worthy”? Many often leap to sustained emotional investment or comprehensively immersive transformations as the benchmark for success at the Academy Awards. But if the Oscars celebrate the performances that elicit the strongest emotional responses then why do show-stopping comedic performances so often receive the cold-shoulder? There is a relatively easy answer to this question found within the progression of American film across the past half-century. Cinema throughout the 1930s, 40s, and 50s saw the proliferation of genre filmmaking, with behemoths like the musical, western, epic, and comedy reigning supreme. During these decades, all of these styles saw success both popularly as cherished classics amongst the general public, and prestigiously as consistent award show champions.

The Oscar for Best Picture may be the highest honor that a film could earn, but the Academy members who vote on the matter are anything but infallible--in fact, some of them don’t even watch the nominated movies at all. Audiences are often disappointed by the pick for Best Picture, but subjectivity mandates that there will always be some reasonable dissent--that said, this article will look back at some of the most widely agreed upon upsets that warrant a closer inspection.

Could it be true? Was it there? Is it missing now?
Fact or fiction?
Introduction
The Mandela Effect gets its name from the misremembering of the death of the former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. A Healthline article describes the occurrence of people remembering Mandela dying in the 1980s when he actually died in 2013. The occurrence of this is broken down to collective false memories and confabulation. An event occurs and is misinterpreted by a number of people, then is cemented as fact in their minds.
Examples of the Mandela Effect include the peanut butter company Jif. Many people remember the company as Jiffy. Another example is The Berenstain Bears. A number of people remember picture books from their childhood as The Berenstein Bears. There is a...

The dramatic, and partly fictional retelling of the sinking of the Titanic - which took place early in the morning on April 15th, 1912 - has a warm place in the hearts of audiences around the world. The film is directed by James Cameron, known for his emotional, yet gorgeously cinematic filmmaking techniques and storytelling skills. The film's cast includes the illustrious Leonardo DiCaprio starring alongside his love interest, Kate Winslet. In addition to these actors, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Francis Fisher, and Gloria Stuart are all seen on screen during the 3 hours and 14 minutes of the film. These actors join together in a grand and moving film that accurately portrays the events of the Titanic’s ill-fated voyage through the eyes of the fictional characters invented by James Cameron himself. ‘Cocaine Bear’ is the new creature feature from Universal Pictures that seems as chaotic as the premise. Elizabeth Banks makes an absurd concept palatable for even the weary. Opening with the contents of fourteen billion dollars worth of cocaine spilling out of the plane, into the Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia. A black bear gets into the stash, unleashing it on a rampage against campers, criminals, and cops. The film is an amusing concept as most of us are already intrigued by the thought of a bear on drugs. Those that share the wonder will be intrigued to follow the cast of characters on their journey to escape the bear while she goes on a rampage. The concept alone makes it a comedy horror film that shouldn’t be taken too seriously, but not certainly not slept on. Rarely do we, as avid TV watchers with all of our cynically savvy, deeply ingrained familiarity for the dramatic structures of television storytelling, get to witness an act of perfectly executed, purely emotional storytelling inside a single episode of television; that is precisely what we got in the extraordinary third installment of HBO’s ‘The Last of Us.’ An even rarer occurrence in popular television is when a highly anticipated show that fans have been desperately waiting to see for years decides to swerve, and take its audience into a completely unexpected tonal and emotional landscape. This third episode of ‘The Last of Us’ Season One, entitled ‘Long, Long Time,’ fleshes out, enriches, and infinitely deepens the backstory of the pre-existing character of Bill, with a titanic-level of empathy and affection that even the most committed fans could never have anticipated. During their stay, they are approached by a group of four strangers to take them into captivity, forcing them to choose between saving the world or saving each other. Although M. The Four Seasons is a world-renowned hotel collection that promises only the best for its guests. The first location opened up in 1961 in a town in Toronto with an innovative new approach to the luxury hotel model. Architect Isadore Sharp wanted his new hotel to approach luxury travel with a guest-centric worldview. He would be entirely focused on what the guest would experience, and everything else about the hotel, no matter how beautiful or amazing in its own right, would revolve around this. It’s proven to be a successful way to run a hotel collection, as the Four Seasons has expanded significantly since then. Its first decade only saw three locations open: now, there are 124 properties internationally. Things to do: Subscribe to The Hollywood Insider’s YouTube Channel, by clicking here. Anna Kendrick has been well-known for playing quirky characters and for playing a hopeless romantic in rom-coms who gets herself in uncomfortable situations in order for her character to find true love. She earned her stardom by playing Bella’s friend Jessica in ‘Twilight,’ and she has often reappeared in other ‘Twilight Films.’ After that, she received other film roles and eventually starred with George Clooney and Vera Farmiga in the movie ‘Up in the Air,’ and received her Oscar nomination for the supporting character of Natalie Keener, a woman who fires people over the internet while Clooney played as the protagonist who fires them in person. However, she still ended up playing rom-com roles in movies such as ‘Pitch Perfect’ where she played Beca. However, Mary Nighy’s powerful directorial debut ‘Alice, Darling’ will make executive producers think twice about casting Anna Kendrick in romantic comedies.

The epicenter of the film industry has been Hollywood for the majority of history. The industry has grown and waned, eras have come and passed, but the love of Cinema has always been constant. Netflix delivers a brand-new Spanish comedy about four middle-aged amigos overcoming their toxic masculinity. With an ensemble cast, ‘Machos Alfa’ (titled ‘Alpha Males’ in English) tells four different stories about machismo, sexuality, fidelity, and patriarchy. The series is clever and uses a modern setting that doesn’t overwash the plot with social media as other shows do in their attempt to be relevant. It tackles the issues with its realistic characters and plots. The characters and their issues are believable and do not fall victim to much melodrama. Directed by a woman, Laura Caballero, the series is a lighthearted show that avoids aggressively illustrating feminism. There have been some shows that cover melodramatic stories such as ‘‘The Slap,’ which has been famous for portraying a family drama that shows from one small scene where a male adult slaps a couple’s misbehaving child which causes family tension and other harbored negative secrets. The hit comedic show ‘Pen15’ has this absurd humor of showing two female actresses who are in their thirties that play seventh-grade middle-schoolers and experience their struggles of fitting in as teenagers in the 2000s. In this new full-length comedic film ‘The Drop,’ the ‘Pen15’ star Anna Konkle and Jermaine Fowler (who appear in Coming 2 America and Sorry to Bother You) both play a young adult couple who attend a wedding on a tropical island. One of them holds a newborn baby and accidentally drops it. The baby seems perfectly unharmed, but the witnesses, which are their friends,...

Darren’s Cinematic Style ‘The Whale’ is a new arthouse film from the stylistic director Darren Aronofsky. ‘The Whale’ has already won seven awards and premiered at Venice Film Festival. If you are familiar with his work, you know that you are going to get some real hard truths within the experience. This film features some great performances while telling a story of a man pushed to the brink of existence through his unhealthy lifestyle. Darren has been making films about this type of tough material for over thirty years now. When I first experienced ‘Requiem for A Dream,’ I could not get it out of my mind. It was a view inside an area of life I had no experience with. This is an important aspect of the way he makes films, something I certainly admire and respect. Photo: Oscar worthy powerhouse performance by Charmaine Bingwa in 'Emancipation'
‘Emancipation’ broadens Will Smith’s filmography to a place that fans have yet to see the superstar in yet. Adapted from the famous photo titled ‘Whipped Peter’ that exposed the cruelty against American slaves that showed the world the severe scars on an ex-slave due to whipping, ‘Emancipation’ is a historical action drama telling the tale of a slave named Peter and his long journey escaping to freedom from a Louisiana plantation. The film takes an interesting plot change throughout. Going from a survival chase thriller to a historical war-epic once reaching the scene the film was adapted from, the film’s plot feels lackluster sometimes. Two of the big reasons for that are the long runtime of over two hours and the sense of no progress for the duration of the movie. The war section of the...

It is safe to say now that, looking back on it, 2019’s ‘Joker’ was a film that made a number of enemies before any friends. From the film’s conception, there was always talk that a Joker film could bring about violence from unhinged viewers. A lot of this fear likely stemmed from the infamous 2012 Dark Knight Rises movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado. Despite the initial hate and pushback the film received before it even hit theaters, Todd Phillips breathed new life and story into a genre, the superhero genre, that was desperate for a change to the norm. 2019’s ‘Joker’ was both a box office and critically acclaimed success, Joaquin Phoenix being praised for his portrayal of the supervillain. Now, with the announcement that a sequel is on its way, what does Phillips’ team have in store for the highly anticipated sequel: ‘Joker: Folie à Deux...

Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jurassic Park’ has been a recognizable film that has been successful in the year of 1993, along with his Oscar-winning movie ‘Schindler’s List.’ ‘Jurassic Park’ influenced other blockbuster films to experiment with special effects and computer animation to exceed audiences' expectations and also remind them that it is always exciting to watch a movie with great visuals. The film even gave Spielberg the opportunity to direct ‘The Lost World: Jurassic Park,’ which had more dinosaurs and computer animation. The critically-acclaimed director may not have been behind the camera for ‘Jurassic Park III,’ but Joe Johnson was. Around the late 2010s to early 2020s, three more sequels were made: ‘Jurassic World’ (2015), ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ (2018), and ‘Jurassic World Dominion (2022).’ Things to do: Subscribe to The Hollywood Insider’s YouTube Channel, by clicking here. ‘Empire of Light’ is a new movie written and directed by Sam Mendes. Based on an entirely original script, it follows Cinema manager Hilary (played by a tragic and often terrifying Olivia Coleman) as she navigates severe depression, a budding romance between her and her new employee (an affectionate Michael Ward), and battles against both internal and external threats to her existence. There’s plenty to love about this movie about movies. For instance, Sam Mendes is at it again and has directed this film communicating the story’s grandeur in mind: his shots highlight every extreme. From the temporary beauties that act as a respite in Hilary’s life to the lows of her life that she is forced to deal with on a frequent if not daily basis, his shot composition covers it all. Aiding in this endeavor is legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins. Deakins...

David Letterman has interviewed thousands of people throughout his forty-year-plus career. ‘Night at the Museum’ has been a beloved comedy for children. In 2006, 20th Century Fox released the first entry to the series which focused on a night guard named Larry Daley who secures a job watching over the American Museum of Natural History since he was desperate to find a job. However, he discovers that the manikins and other objects that symbolize historical figures have come to life every night. The movie was praised for its astonishing special effects, which have made the film a lot more creative in having its children viewers enjoy learning about the fictionalized versions of historical individuals and their humorous and wacky interactions with the guard. Immediately following the release of the hit 2018 animated film, ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, a sequel has been anticipated by both Spider-Man and general Marvel fans alike. The original film garnered a number of awards, including the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, so a sequel was always inevitable. However, considering not only the success but the clever writing and fantastic visuals of its predecessor, can a sequel to ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ really hold a candle to the original? The Predecessor After a hiatus following the portrayal of Spider-Man by Andrew Garfield in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’, Spider-Man had finally returned to blockbuster status with the release of ‘Captain America: Civil War’. Tom Holland’s portrayal of Spider-Man put the masked web-shooter back on the big screen, following this introduction with a new Spider-Man origin film, ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ in 2017.
