And the award for best writing in a comedy/variety talk series goes to… Last Week Tonight With John Oliver.
The WGA Awards were handed out late Sunday and, in an announcement that likely surprised absolutely no one in the crowd, Last Week Tonight was recognized—yet again—for best writing in a Comedy/Variety Talk Series.
A total of 15 writers shared in the accolade. In addition to Oliver himself, senior writers Daniel O’Brien, Owen Parsons, Charlie Redd, Joanna Rothkopf, and Seena Vali and writers Johnathan Appel, Ali Barthwell, Tim Carvell, Liz Hynes, Ryan Ken, Mark Kramer, Sofia Manfredi, Taylor Kay Phillips, and Chrissy Shackelford all share the award.
This marks the second year in a row that Oliver and company have taken home the big prize, and the seventh time the WGA has recognized their excellence overall.

The David Hemingson-scripted Alexander Payne dramedy The Holdovers and Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction were the big film winners at the strike-delayed 2024 Writers Guild Awards, which were handed out Sunday in Los Angeles and New York.
Jefferson — who also was honored with the WGA West’s Paul Selvin Award — followed his Oscar win for Adapted Screenplay as the WGA’s weird, wild and elongated Awards season wrapped with simultaneous ceremonies on both coasts. Hemingson scored a modicum of revenge for losing the Original Screenplay Academy Award to Justine Triet and Arthur Harari for Anatomy of a Fall.
The latter script, however, wasn’t eligible for a Writers Guild Award. That’s because, unlike other guilds, the WGA deems ineligible any scripts for movies not produced under its Minimum Basic Agreement or a bona fide collective bargaining agreement with various affiliated countries.
Later, the Documentary prize went to Errol Morris...

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah was somewhat of a surprise winner for the main late-night Emmy.
But it was made slightly easier after Last Week Tonight with John Oliver was moved out of the Outstanding Talk Series category (he won Scripted Variety Series).
Noah, who left The Daily Show more than a year ago, accepted the award.
He thanked a litany of his former team, as well as Jon Stewart, who was also in the category with The Problem with Jon Stewart, for bringing him to The Daily Show, as well as showrunner Jen Flanz, “this woman rode with me through the trenches”.
“I told you we’d beat John Oliver if he wasn’t in our category. We did it, we got rid of John Oliver. This story has been so long, so crazy, so wonderful. I want to start by thanking the crazy Africans who followed me to this country,...

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver beat Saturday Night Live and A Black Lady Sketch Show to win the first ever Emmy for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series.
John Oliver’s HBO show continued its Emmy win streak, winning its eighth straight Emmy, having won seven years in a row in the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category.
The TV Academy shook up the categories last year, launching Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, alongside Outstanding Talk Series and moved Oliver into the former, going head to head with SNL, which had won the award for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series six years in a row starting in 2017.
Oliver, who was handed the award by Stephen Colbert, his Strike Force 5 co-host, and After Midnight host Taylor Tomlinson, started by thanking his staff, although pointed out that some of them were still in New York “burning down a bar there”.

After Writers Guild of America waged a protest regarding the Television Academy‘s decision to move the outstanding writing for a variety series or special categories out of the upcoming Emmy telecast, the TV Academy has reversed course.
In a joint release sent out today, the Television Academy, Fox and the WGA said they were “happy to announce they have reached an agreement to include the Writing for a Variety Series category in the 75th Emmy Awards telecast airing live on Fox on January 15, 2024, at 8pm Est / 5pm Pst.”
Because this year’s Primetime Emmys has moved the variety special (live) category into the telecast (it was on the Creative Arts show last year), the TV Academy was likely looking to keep the telecast capped at 25 awards, so something had to fall out. And in this case, it was the variety writing field that originally got pushed to the Creative Arts ceremony.

Exclusive: Fresh from helping the pūteketeke become the Bird of the Century, John Oliver has another reason to celebrate.
HBO has renewed Last Week Tonight for a further three seasons, taking the weekly show through 2026.
The new deal, which runs through Season 13, comes as the tenth season of the late-night show is coming to a close later this month. The show had a truncated season as a result of the writers strike – airing just over two-thirds of its normal episode count as a result of the labor action – but Oliver still managed to explore timeshares, psychedelic therapy, homeowner associations, abortion rights, the Israel-Hamas war, dollar stores and the Tennessee Adult Entertainment Act as well as most recently organ donation.
His crowning achievement this season, however, was his campaign for the pūteketeke. The New Zealand contest had to be delayed for a couple of weeks due to the overwhelming number of...

In the nearly eight years John Oliver has been helming HBO’s “Last Week Tonight,” the comedian has developed a number of tactics for holding an audience’s interest. Most prominent is the passion driving his direct-to-camera reports, often resulting in hyperbolic headlines claiming “John Oliver Eviscerates X,” or “John Oliver Destroys Y.” Jokes can be deployed as decisive exclamation points to these stories, as well as pace-setting commas that break them up. “And Now This…” videos add a random edge, helping shift from one hefty topic to the next with levity and style. Special guests drop by regularly enough to entice starry-eyed viewers, but not often enough to feel like a celebrity parade. Studio segments that move Oliver out from behind his desk are rare, but they’re always memorable. Sometimes the set even talks back to its host.

The Amber Ruffin Show and A Black Lady Sketch Show have both secured Emmy writing noms for the first time – noticeably helping to improve the diversity of the category.
The Peacock series and the HBO show will compete in Outstanding Writing For A Variety Series against HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and NBC’s SNL.
A somewhat curious note of this category is that Ashley Nicole Black will compete against herself, having been involved in writing on both The Amber Ruffin Show and A Black Lady Sketch Show.
It marks The Amber Ruffin Show’s first Emmy nomination since the weekly show launched last year. However, it is not Ruffin herself’s first nom, having been nominated in this category for her work, alongside her head writer Jenny Hagel, on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Octopuses — and definitely not octopi, we’ll let John Oliver explain why — are freaking majestic geniuses, according to this “Last Week Tonight” web-exclusive video. And yet, as the HBO host correctly called out, the sea creature does not get nearly enough credit. For what? Every. Single. Thing.
The clip, uploaded on Sunday, when Oliver was off again for his continuing summer hiatus, should probably terrify viewers as much as it wows and informs them. Why? Well, octopuses are Clearly just biding time to take over the Earth.
Watch the video above and you’ll pretty quickly see what we mean.
“Look, look, America — and to some extent, the world. All I’ve been trying to say with this piece — and in a way, my entire life — is that octopuses are cool,” Oliver wound down his 10-minute tribute. “Cats have dominated the internet for far too long and it is past...

John Oliver dedicated the vast majority of Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight” to educate HBO viewers on Asian-American history. He treaded lightly on the way in.
“Before we start, I fully recognize the history of white people on TV generalizing confidently on this subject isn’t great,” Oliver acknowledged up front.
Much of the 27-minute segment was dedicated to the concept of the “model minority,” a phrase often attached to Asian Americans with generally good intentions, but one that also dismisses a member’s individuality and applies undo pressures upon those in the group.
Before Oliver got there though, he helped (white) viewers actually understand just how wide-ranging the term “Asian American” even is. Currently, Asian Americans make up about 7% of the overall U.S. population. It is the fastest-growing racial group.
And if you wanted statistics on income, well, he’s got those too.

HBO host calls Fox News personality “one of the most prominent super spreaders” of Covid-19
John Oliver used pretty much his entire “Last Week Tonight” episode Sunday to implore viewers to get the damn Covid-19 vaccine already. The HBO host ripped some other popular media personalities — Tucker Carlson, Alex Jones and Joe Rogan, who has been discouraging that message — in the process.
Oliver called it “generally dispiriting” that we’ve gone from a coronavirus-vaccine supply issue to a demand shortage. Why are people not getting the series of shots? Oliver has a theory.
Like, “this f—ing guy” Tucker Carlson, whom Oliver referred to as “one of the most prominent super spreaders” of the deadly virus.

John Oliver took on the bankruptcy process last night, when “Shark Tank” star Kevin O’Leary got credit for being a total jerk.
On an episode of the ABC series “Shark Tank,” Kevin O’Leary called an entrepreneur who had previously filed for bankruptcy “radioactive.” The HBO “Last Week Tonight” host then turned that TV clip right around.
“Well hold on, because that is a terrible lesson,” Oliver said. “And you, Kevin O’Leary, are hardly one to be calling someone’s decisions ‘radioactive,’ given that you invested in companies with business models like, ‘Put your face on a potato,’ ‘Look like an idiot on a unicycle’ and Toygaroo, the Netflix for toys, whose mascot always looked like it was searching for a place to take a s—. And, which interestingly, filed for f—ing bankruptcy. So I’m sorry Kevin, but to me, that makes you radioactive. I’m out.

John Oliver didn’t waste any time ribbing New York City mayor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight” episode about nursing homes, calling the facilities “the absolute last thing you want Andrew Cuomo to be handling, tied comfortably with literally anything else.”
That zinger came from the very first line of the HBO host’s 20-plus-minute segment. Given the topic at hand, things got a bit more somber from there.
“The truth is, Covid just exposed what we’ve basically known for years,” Oliver said. “That the way the elderly and disabled are treated in far too many of these facilities is with, at best, indifference, and at worst, abuse and neglect.
Sadly, a nursing home resident’s level of care could very much be dependent upon who is footing the bill.
“If Medicare is paying, the risk is you could be billed for unnecessary treatments,” Oliver said last night.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver continued its dominance in the Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series category.
The HBO comedy show beat TBS’ Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, NBC’s Late Night With Seth Meyers, CBS’ Late Show with Stephen Colbert to win the award for the fifth year in a row.
The British comedian accepted the award on behalf of his team using one of his son’s “creepy” toys in lieu of an actual Emmy.
“I’d like to thank my writers, obviously, who work incredibly hard all year round and this year has been particularly challenging,” he said. “I’d like to thank the Emmys for not holding the Emmys in person this year because of the, you know, thing. Thank you, we will cherish it forever.”

HBO has renewed late night series, “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” for three more seasons, taking it through 2023.
“For the past seven years, John and his incredibly talented team have taken on topics that are both in the public mind and off the beaten path, always managing to shed new light on these subjects with intelligence and searing humor,” said Casey Bloys, chief content officer for HBO and HBO Max. “We are beyond thrilled to continue this relationship for three more years.”
“Last Week Tonight” returns with new episodes on Sept. 27. The series has been filming remotely amid the coronavirus pandemic. Unlike many other late-night series, “Last Week Tonight” has not set a return date to its New York studio.

John Oliver is sticking with HBO for another three years after the premium cable network renewed Last Week Tonight through 2023.
It seems ‘Business Daddy’, Oliver’s pet-name for WarnerMedia parent company AT&T, is happy to stay in business with the Brit comedian.
The show, which is produced by Avalon and Oliver’s Sixteen String Jack Productions, is currently in its seventh season, having recently aired its 200th episode. The deal, announced by HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys, will take the show through to its tenth season.
It comes as Last Week Tonight, which takes a satirical, if sometimes rather weird and wonderful, look at the week in news, politics and current events, is the favorite to take home another Emmy, having won the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category every year since 2016.
The series, which is currently on hiatus until September 27, airs on HBO on Sunday nights at 11pm.

John Oliver will be bringing his biting satire to HBO for at least three more years.
The premium cabler has announced it has renewed “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” for three more seasons, taking the British comedian’s run through 10 seasons and through the year 2023.
News of the pickup comes around two weeks after Oliver aired his last episode on the Republican National Convention and the protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin over the police shooting of Jacob Blake. Season 7 also saw Oliver cover the coronavirus pandemic, which forced “Last Week Tonight” out of its CBS Broadcast Center studio back in March, police brutality, and the George Floyd protests.
Casey Bloys, chief content officer for HBO and HBO Max, unveiled Oliver’s new deal.

The WGA Awards boosted a pair of movie screenplays into Oscar frontrunner status on Saturday night, handing its marquee Original Screenplay award to Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won for Neon’s Parasite, and its Adapted Screenplay award to Taika Wiatiti for Searchlight’s Jojo Rabbit. Both of the winning scripts are nominated for Oscars on February 9.
This year the guild wasted no time in its 72nd edition, awarding its marquee prizes early in the night in simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York. It was the Primetime Emmy Awards, and it was a night of surprises—like Fleabag‘s win for Best Comedy Series, and the total shutout for perennial favorite Veep—and expected wins, like Game of Thrones taking Best Drama Series, and love for Saturday Night Live resulting in two trophies. John Oliver also doubled up, winning Variety Talk Series as well as Writing. In the Limited Series race, Chernobyl prevailed, taking three trophies including the top prize.
Perhaps the most drama, of course, came from the ever-evolving battle between the vanguard of prestige cable, HBO, and the upstart streamer fast becoming the new establishment, Netflix. Coming into tonight, the two were nearly neck-a-neck with Creative Arts wins, but HBO, which had a narrow advantage, cemented its lead with 34 wins to Netflix’s 27. “Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver is okay with missing some stories — after all, the very nature of his Sunday night HBO series and the increasingly busy news cycle it covers ensures that he’s always going to be, in his words, “late to everything” — but there is one story the British comedian is sad to have skipped during the four-month break between the fifth and sixth seasons of show. And no, it’s not political. It is, however, the kind of thing he and his team could have had a ton of fun with.
At a Monday morning breakfast in New York City with assorted members of the press, Oliver was asked about which news stories caught his attention during his hiatus, and he had one quick answer. “The really honest answer to that is, there was a story about a British family terrorizing New Zealand, did you hear about that?...

Late Show with Stephen Colbert writer Ariel Dumas apologized yesterday for tweeting about her happiness in helping to ruin Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s life. Considering Kavanaugh had just secured a lifelong gig on the Supreme Court, the “ruined life” tweet was, as Dumas later said, an attempt at sarcasm.
But did Dumas go too far – in apologizing? Many of her fellow comedy writers are coming to her defense. One even pledged “fire and fury” from Dumas’ fellow female comedy writers if the CBS Late Show writer is “financially” punished.
“Every comedy writer supports you,” tweeted Danny Zuker, executive producer of ABC’s Modern Family. “How great would it be if the people trolling you were this outraged over a woman being sexually assaulted?
Kathy Griffin tweeted Monday that Dumas is “a comedy writer, being held to a higher standard than the President of the United States. Love you @ArielDumas, f*ck the haters.

While the 2018 Emmy Awards did a good job of spreading the wealth this year, there were still multiple nominees who walked away with a handful of trophies. Mega-producer Ryan Murphy won Best Limited Series for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” as well as Best Directing after four consecutive losses for other programs. But Amy Sherman-Palladino was the biggest winner of the live ceremony, taking home not one, not two, but three Emmys for producing, directing and writing “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” This is on top of her win at the Creative Arts Emmys last weekend for Best Music Supervision. Despite launching multiple critically acclaimed series over the years, these are Sherman-Palladino’s first Emmy wins.

This year, the WGA and the Academy differed dramatically. While the WGA deemed “Moonlight” and “Loving” as Original Screenplays, the Academy considered both as Adapted; only “Moonlight” landed a nomination.
At the WGA, as at the BAFTAs, Barry Jenkins’ script for “Moonlight” competed for the Original Screenplay Award against both Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea” and Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land.” Unlike the BAFTAs, Jenkins emerged the winner over Lonergan, a sign of strength for “Moonlight,” which is nominated for eight Oscars.

Musical cements status as Oscar frontrunner.
Fred Berger, Jordan Horowitz and Marc Platt performed what looked very much like a rehearsal for another awards show at Saturday’s 28th annual Producers Guild Awards in Beverly Hills.
The La La Land producers beat out a strong field that included Arrival, Moonlight, Fences, Manchester By The Sea and Lion to claim the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.
Given the track record of the PGA Awards as a bellwether of Academy Awards success, Berg, Horowitz and Platt have three hands on the biggest prize of them all heading into Oscar night on February 26.
While the best picture Oscar winner and the PGA’s Darryl F. Zanuck Award winner are often one and the same, last year’s PGA champion The Big Short lost to Spotlight on Oscar night.
In other key theatrical awards, the Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures award went to...

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) handed out top film honors to the screenplays of "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "The Imitation Game" Saturday night. On the television side, "Louie" and "True Detective" were favorites, winning two prizes each. So if "The Imitation Game" is to go on to Oscar glory, it will have to compete with Chazelle's popular film for the first time this season at the Feb. 22 Academy Awards ceremony. Additionally, presumed Best Picture frontrunner "Birdman" was not eligible for WGA (making it still significant competition with "Grand Budapest" in the original category), nor was "The Theory of Everything,...
