There are many standards by which we can measure the influence of the Mad Max franchise. The series consists of five excellent movies, all made by Australian filmmaker George Miller and a host of co-creators. The series launched the career of Mel Gibson who, until his hate-mongering came to light, was one of the most engaging movie stars of the 1980s and ‘90s. And it defined the idea of the post-apocalypse so much that revved-up machinery and bondage gear has become the de facto look of the end of the world.
At their center, though, the Mad Max movies are deeply personal stories about two things: the way humans destroy themselves with their own inventions, namely the motor cars and the gas they guzzle, and the way communities and even empathy endure in the Wasteland.
Although Miller helms each of the entries, the franchise has evolved over its 45-year existence.

For many in Hollywood’s television and movie industry, life has become about holding on.
The pandemic and double strikes have taken their toll on the entertainment industry. And the recovery that many had expected has proven messy, at best.
And now, Hollywood veterans — in production, development and whose businesses support the industry — are facing the unimaginable reality that their dreams of making a long career in Hollywood may be coming to an end — or to a moment when they are forced to consider a pivot to a different life.
TheWrap talked to working folks in the industry to understand their personal stories. They include producers in unscripted TV, an award-winning hairdresser, a TV director, a senior vice president for development, a dolly grip and a sound supervisor. [This story contains spoilers from the FX limited series Clipped.]
Adapting true narratives is often a tricky proposition. And it gets even trickier when it’s as unbelievable and unprecedented as the fallout from 80-year-old Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling’s viral racist comments against Black people back in 2014 — just as Instagram and Twitter were in their infancy, and TMZ and Kardashian culture was extending their cultural imprint.
All of that fuels the FX series Clipped, which ended its limited series run on Tuesday.
Having as its guide the ESPN 30 for 30 podcast The Sterling Affairs from Ramona Shelburne (the ESPN writer also served as an executive producer on the series) was both helpful and challenging for Gina Welch, the creator and showrunner for the TV adaptation, whose impressive credits as both writer and producer include Feud and Ray Donovan.

Spoiler Alert: This article includes details about the series finale of “Clipped,” now streaming on Hulu.
The emperor with no clothes is still the emperor. That’s the ugly truth that FX’s “Clipped” arrives at in its series finale.
After Donald Sterling (Ed O’Neill) fails to block his wife Shelly (Jacki Weaver) from alleging her husband is mentally incapacitated and taking control of their family trust, Donald concedes to the sale of the Los Angeles Clippers to the rambunctious ex-Microsoft exec Steve Ballmer. With that, Donald also stops fighting against his lifetime ban from the NBA, imposed against him after TMZ publishes an audio recording of Sterling delivering a racist tirade to his assistant-mistress V. Stiviano (Cleopatra Coleman) chastising her for publicly associating with Black people.
For waving the white flag, the Sterlings are awarded $2 billion in the sale of the Clippers: an exponential return on the $12 million...

It seems like any time a younger version of a character appears on screen, we can’t help but immediately compare with the one we’re more familiar with. How often have you said, “That looks nothing like them!”? And while digital de-aging can be done to achieve the desired outcome (depending on the age gap), modern technology has offered yet another way: yes, we’re talking about artificial intelligence. And that’s just what was used to get Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Brown in Furiosa to match as closely as possible.
Appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show (via Variety), Anya Taylor-Joy said that Furiosa presented the opportunity for the filmmakers to try something out. “George Miller had the idea very early on. The audience was already getting used to a new Furiosa,” referring to herself taking over the role as a younger version of Charlize Theron’s character. “He...

The Anya Taylor-Joy starrer Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was released earlier this week to positive responses. Though the film seemed to have had a less-than-stellar opening at the box office, most fans seemed to have been impressed with George Miller’s return to the Wasteland. The film is a prequel/spinoff to Mad Max: Fury Road.
Taylor-Joy replaced Charlize Theron in the prequel as a younger Imperator Furiosa. The film follows Furiosa’s childhood in the Green Place and her eventual admission into Immortan Joe’s Citadel. However, a much younger Furiosa was played by Alyla Browne, whose features were reportedly fused with Taylor-Joy’s with AI.

If you’ve seen “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and noticed an uncanny resemblance between child actor Alyla Browne, who plays the titular character as a child, and Anya Taylor-Joy, who assumes the role as the story skips ahead several years, you’re not alone.
The reason, it seems, involved more than its skillful casting. Director George Miller additionally employed artificial intelligence in the making of his post-apocalyptic prequel to 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which Warner Bros. opened in the U.S. on Friday.
“George Miller had the idea very early on,” explained Taylor-Joy in an interview on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” “The audience was already getting used to a new Furiosa [Charlize Theron in ‘Fury Road’]. He wanted the transition from both actors [Browne and Taylor-Joy] playing her to be seamless. And so I did two days of the craziest things you could ever possibly imagine. And they mixed our faces together.

George Miller’s world-building spectacle is an assault on the senses that’s given a human heart by its remarkable star
“The question is: do you have it in you to make it epic?” Garrulous and utterly deranged despot Dr. Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) is making small talk with Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy), who is in no mood for idle chatter. The moment comes towards the end of the movie; by this point in the film, Furiosa is a single-minded, flint-eyed avenger with a customised power tool for an arm. It’s a great line, which Hemsworth delivers with a lip-smacking relish. But given the barnstorming action onslaught that has preceded the exchange, it’s a question that is probably redundant. This is a George Miller picture, after all. Epic is all part of a day’s work. But even by the standards of the previous films in the Mad Max series,...

Plot: Stolen from her people as a child and forced to witness her mother’s execution, young Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) sets out on an epic quest for vengeance against the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth).
Review: George Miller’s Mad Max series contains not one but two of the most incredible action movies ever made. Sure, there’s Fury Road, but there’s also The Road Warrior. Both are masterpieces of their genre, so the bar has been set pretty high for Miller’s return to the Wasteland. The early reviews seem overly concerned that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga isn’t a replay of Mad Mad: Fury Road, with it telling an epic, fifteen-year tale, the likes of which has never been attempted in the series before. From the 1979 original onward, all the movies told relatively compact stories, so Miller and co-writer Nico Lathouris deserve praise for doing something different.

When George Miller released "Mad Max: Fury Road" in 2015 (our review here), he completely revolutionized action films forever. The long-awaited fourth installment of his post-apocalyptic Ozploitation franchise, "Fury Road" was over three decades in the making, but before Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron ever pressed their boot leather to the gas pedal of a war rig — there was Miller's script for "Furiosa." Almost entirely written before production began on "Fury Road," Miller outlined a thrilling epic about the life of Imperator Furiosa before she crossed paths with "Mad" Max Rockatansky.
Now, Miller has brought that story to the big screen, a prequel to "Fury Road" and an immersive dive into the life story of one of cinema's greatest characters of the last 20 years. Thanks to the extensive behind-the-scenes oral history of "Fury Road," we know that Miller is a meticulous director who storyboards out his films within an inch of their life.

Since their beginnings in 1979, George Miller’s hyper-jacked Mad Max movies with Mel Gibson had not received a single Oscar nomination, not even for Tina Turner’s great signature song “We Don’t Need Another Hero” in 1985’s Beyond Thunderdome. But then, 30 years later, when finally the fourth and Gibson-less edition appeared, the snooty Academy got on board and gave the newly regenerated Mad Max: Fury Road 10 nominations including for Best Picture and Director. It won six of them, virtually sweeping the crafts categories.
Nine years later comes a prequel, Furosia: A Mad Max Saga, and Miller, now seemingly ageless at 79 (he was 34 when the first one came out) has perhaps given birth to the greatest Max yet, a wheels-up, rock-and-rolling epic that delivers the origin story of the title character Charlize Theron picked up in Fury Road when she was about 26.
That movie only covered about three days total.

Alyla Browne may only be 14 years old, but in the short time she’s been acting she’s somehow managed to assemble one of the most ridiculously star-studded on-screen family trees.
In Hulu’s “Nine Perfect Strangers,” she played Nicole Kidman’s daughter. In Amazon Studio’s “The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart,” she was Sigourney Weaver’s granddaughter. Meanwhile, in George’s Miller’s fantasy “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” she appeared as a young Tilda Swinton.
But the fast-rising Australian is about to top all of that. In “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” she plays the Imperator Furiosa as a child, meaning she’s not just the young Anya Taylor-Joy, but the young Charlize Theron as well.
“It’s absolutely insane,” notes the teen, now juggling her studies with her first trip to Cannes for the world premiere of the one of the year’s most highly anticipated films.

Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy would’ve had a different actor playing a crucial role in the film. During a recent interview, director Stephen Sommers revealed that he tried to cast a famous Star Wars actor in the film. The character of Ardeth Bay in the film was initially written for an older actor and Sommers tried to cast Darth Vader actor James Earl Jones in the role. The director also considered Roscoe Lee Browne in the role, but both actors were busy with other projects.

Sommers then had to rewrite the character to be played by a much younger actor and cast Israeli actor Oded Fehr in the role. The character returned once again in the sequel film, The Mummy Returns, in 2001.

Gigi Hadid attended the Met Gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday in a floor-length gown with flowers attached.
Hadid stunned in a white gown by Thom Browne, appropriate for the theme, Sleeping Beauties: Awakening Fashion.
“It’s always a privilege to watch Gigi come to life,” Browne told Vogue. “She is a true talent that shines at whatever she does. I wanted her look to embody the fragility and immense work that you see in Andrew [Bolton]’s exhibit, blooming on the carpet and into The Metropolitan Museum of Art.”
Hadid has been modeling for about a decade and shares a son with ex-boyfriend Zayn Malik, formerly of One Direction.
She has a younger sister, model Bella, and she could not attend the event with her big sister – Bella has been recovering from Lyme disease.

As is house tradition, Thom Browne’s 2024 Met Gala crew posed for a pre-carpet group photo, shared exclusively with The Hollywood Reporter.
The Thom Browne class of Met Gala 2024 group includes Cynthia Erivo, Rebecca Ferguson, Gigi Hadid, model Alton Mason, NBA pro Ben Simmons, Jaden Smith, Steven Yeun and — making a rare red carpet appearance together — Queen Latifah and her partner, choreographer/producer Eboni Nichols.
They gathered for their class photo at The Pierre New York hotel, wearing pieces that tackled the night’s “The Garden of Time” dress code and also speak to Browne’s laser-sharp vision and effortless cool. On display among the group of nine are nature details, plaid and a whole lot of black and white.

Singer-songwriter Judee Sill packed a lot of living into her 35 years, much of it hard. Drugs, reform school, losing her father when she was just 8. Of her mother she said, “She was mean on top of being dumb.”
In her late teens, in the early 1960s, she got involved with a bad hombre in Southern California and they pulled off a few armed robberies. In one incident, she reportedly told a guy behind a liquor store counter, “Okay, mother sticker, this is a fuck up!” Humor she did not lack.
As a child Sill learned piano at an upright in a saloon owned by her dad. She mastered other instruments, including bass and guitar. In juvenile hall – where she was sent after an arrest for forging checks – she played the organ. Somehow, through cracks in the unpolished concrete of a difficult youth, a flowering talent emerged. She could draw, she could sing,...

Dogwoof has boarded international sales for “Thom Browne: The Man Who Fell to Earth,” the first feature documentary about the fashion designer. Dogwoof will present the film to buyers in Cannes this month.
“Thom Browne: The Man Who Fell to Earth,” a working title, marks Dogwoof’s third collaboration with director Reiner Holzemer and producer Aminata Sambe following 2016’s “Dries,” an intimate portrait of the fashion designer Dries Van Noten, and 2019’s “Martin Margiela: In His Own Words,” about one of the most revolutionary and influential fashion designers of his time.
“Thom Browne: The Man Who Fell to Earth” follows the ascent to fashion stardom of Browne, whose career is based on the unconventional single concept of the tailored gray suit. His fashion line has garnered A-list collaborators and fans on the way such as Michelle Obama, Billie Eilish, Zendaya, Cardi B and David Bowie, who famously wore Browne’s...

Writer/Director Kiah Roache-Turner wears his influences on his sleeves in the throwback creature feature Sting. A mysterious object from outer space crashes into a New York apartment amidst a raging blizzard, where the mysterious spider inside it is discovered by a girl named Charlotte. Charlotte dubs her new pet Sting, unaware that it’s not from Earth and comes with an insatiable appetite for human flesh. As the spider’s reign of terror increases, so does Roache-Turner’s commitment to capturing the mayhem through stunning practical creature effects, which makes this film worth the price of admission.
It’s not just the spider’s pet name, derived from The Hobbit, or the effects by the 5-time Academy Award® Winner Wētā Workshop, led by Creative Director Richard Taylor, that calls the work of Peter Jackson to mind here. It’s also the film’s sense of humor, from the opening...

Having already cracked a tube of conversation with Sting director Kiah Roache-Turner in our mega-sesh last week we turned our attention to his young star, Alyla Browne. We gave Kiah the night off and let his star share her thoughts on this horror flick. Watch his face though when we tell him what they did at Panic Fest over the weekend when his film opened the festival. Miss Browne plays Charlotte, the young girl who must save her family from an over-sized mutant spider. She's a young star on the rise, and will appear soon as the young Furiosa in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Sonic The Hedgehog 3. So we wanted to know such things as, how is she around spiders, why did...

Zendaya is looking as stunning as ever as she continues her Challengers press tour.
Today (April 10), the cast was in London, England at the premiere, held at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square. As you can see from Zendaya‘s look, her custom design had tiny tennis rackets in the fabric, keeping in theme with all of her press looks for the movie.
Zendaya was joined at the event by her co-stars Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist along with director Luca Guadagnino.
Challengers stars Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach and a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court. Married to a champion on a losing streak (Faist), Tashi’s strategy for her husband’s redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against the washed-up Patrick (O’Connor) – his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend.

At a dinner celebrating Thom Browne’s 20th anniversary and his just-launched capsule collection at Saks Fifth Avenue, the designer told the guests — who included Diane Keaton, Janelle Monáe, Logan Lerman and Danai Gurira — that the night felt like a homecoming.
“L.A. is almost my second home … I do feel like I had five really formative years here that I still hold dear to this day,” Browne explained during a toast at Mr. Chow restaurant in Beverly Hills Thursday night.
Years before he launched his label, the designer of now-iconic suits that have redefined suiting had trekked to Los Angeles while searching for a professional passion. The late interior designer Paul Fortune, whose clients included Sofia Coppola and Marc Jacobs, befriended Browne and later offered his guesthouse as a residence. It was there, adjacent to a pool under the California sunshine, that Browne began to contemplate his future.

La chimera.Around 1655, a group of rural laborers were excavating a field in Norfolk, England, when they dug up a collection of ancient urns, small clay vessels filled with ashes, bones, and various grave goods: combs, tweezers, brass plates, and a blue opal, possibly once set into a ring. More than a thousand years before, this field had served as a cemetery, and if not for an agricultural accident, it would have remained unknown. The find so impressed the scholar, doctor, and writer Sir Thomas Browne that he began his 1658 Urne-Buriall with the following: “Nature hath furnished one part of the Earth, and man another. The treasures of time lie high, in Urnes, Coynes, and Monuments, scarce below the roots of some vegetables.” He marveled at the survival of these fragile vessels, which, though “in a yard underground, and thin walls of clay, [have] out-worn all the strong and specious buildings above it,...

With their comic Minor Threats, actor and comedian Patton Oswalt and TV writer Jordan Blum found unexpected success with their title focused on the travails of underappreciated and overlooked D-list villains.
Now, a background character in the comic that is about background villains is getting his moment in the spotlight.
From the World of Minor Threats: Barfly teams up the duo, who created Hulu’s stop-motion Marvel series M.O.D.O.K., with comics author Kyle Starks and artist Ryan Browne, the illustrator of indie hit Eight Billion Genies. It tells a coming-of-age story about an insect monster-man, seen previously as a silent but oh-so-cool-looking humanoid fly in a punk jacket in certain panels of the Threat comics. Now, he is searching for his identity in the criminal underworld of Twilight City. Dark Horse Comics is publishing the four-issue mini-series starting in July.

Selena Gomez will play Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming biopic based on the superstar singer’s 2013 memoir Simple Dreams.
The Only Murders In The Building star and executive producer gave credence to the months-old internet rumors about the project today by posting a photo of the memoir as an Instagram Story. Deadline’s sister publication Rolling Stone later confirmed the casting.
The movie is in pre-production, with James Keach and Ronstadt’s longtime manager John Boylan co-producing. Additional casting and release date have not been announced.
An unconfirmed report of Gomez’s involvement in the biopic surfaced last July, but the Ig Story today moved the possibility into the definite.
Keach directed the 2020 film Linda and the Mockingbirds, a documentary chronicling a road trip undertaken by Ronstadt, Jackson Browne and a group of younger musicians to the Mexican town of Banámichi in the state of Sonora, the birthplace of Ronstadt’s grandfather.

With credit surely partly due to the “Timothée Chalamet effect,” menswear hit new levels of creativity and expressiveness this year. “There’s a sense of zero fucks given,” says stylist Michael Fisher (who last year made tailored skirts a red carpet staple on client Oscar Isaac).
The risk-taking and loosening up of silhouettes, say stylist duo Wayman + Micah comes down to the fact that “the men in Hollywood just want to have just as much fun with looks, not to mention the trends of androgyny and unisexual dressing in our culture having an influence on acceptability.”
Flaunting Sheer
Instead of an obvious no-shirt approach, many male stars embraced sultry layering by pairing suits and sweaters with sheer shirts.
“You’re still getting body but not overt body,” says stylist Fisher, whose client Tom Blyth (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) wore a gossamer Ami Paris tank with cardigan in November.

At Monday night’s Cfda Awards at the American Museum of Natural History, Thom Browne, the current chairman of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, made the case that fashion has a place even amid times of world crisis.
In a powerful speech that kicked off the evening, Browne noted that Cfda members “thought carefully about the appropriateness of a fashion celebration in a time like this. But tonight is about so much more than celebrating individuals,” he said. “We’re coming together as a collective to champion creativity, diversity and inclusion in our American industry.”
