The Czech queer short "Peacock" won Best DirectorWith the Academy Award short nominees opening in theaters today, it's a good time to note that the Sundance short film jury handed out their awards this week. This year's jury of three was Key & Peele's Keegan-Michael Key, MTV's chief film critic Amy Nicholson, and Amazon Studio's Gina Kwon. Since Sundance is a qualifying festival for Academy Awards you might hear the name of some of these shorts again in about a year. One of last year's big winners, for example, was World of Tomorrow by Don Hertzfeldt. That's an Oscar nominee right now for Best Animated Short.
The 2016 Short Film Winners are as follows:
Grand Jury Prize Thunder Road (USA, Jim Cummings) an officer eulogizes his mother. Cummings is a producer/director with some shorts under his belt.
U.S. Fiction The Procedure (USA, Calvin Lee Reeder) a horror short about a captive man.

Opening on August 28th is director Craig Zobel’s Z For Zachariah. In the wake of a nuclear war, a young woman survives on her own, fearing she may actually be the proverbial last woman on earth, until she discovers the most astonishing sight of her life: another human being. A distraught scientist, he’s nearly been driven mad by radiation exposure and his desperate search for others. A fragile, imperative strand of trust connects them. But when a stranger enters the valley, their precarious bond begins to unravel. The film stars Margot Robbie, Chris Pine, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Having its initial screening at the Sundance Film Festival in January, Sasha Bronner of the Huffington Post wrote, “Zobel balances danger, suspense and the more delicate nuances of love expertly, leaving us unsure of both the threats outside the house as well as the danger within.”
The film features a score composed by Heather McIntosh (Compliance,...

Varèse Sarabande will release the Z For Zachariah – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally August 28 and on CD on September 4, 2015.
The album features the original music composed by Heather McIntosh (Compliance, Manson Family Vacation).
“This is my second time working with Craig Zobel, so our director-composer language is pretty well developed,” explained McIntosh. “With our last collaboration [Compliance], the ensemble was super minimal, super biting, but minimal. This time we wanted to push ourselves with the score and it’s thematic development. Really go for it, you know? Though it is a chamber work, we wanted the sound to be full and orchestral.”
McIntosh had the opportunity to write for organ in a scene where Margot Robbie’s character plays the instrument on screen. “We knew that we needed to get the tone of this right. It needed to feel like a timeless hymn and also be a defining theme for Ann.

Calvin Lee Reeder is a cinematic madman, a total original whose work is polarizing in the extreme and certainly not for everyone but those who love his stuff - myself very much among them - really love his stuff. Any new project from Reeder is a cause for celebration and so to hear that after a pair of Sundance selected features (The Oregonian and The Rambler) he's got a pair of new short projects ready to go back to back ... well, that's something worth supporting. From the Director, Calvin Lee Reeder, on The Procedure:"A little while ago, I was inspired by an X-Files episode to create a mysterious and ridiculous experiment in which a man is abducted and held captive in a little room, then...

Underground movies don’t typically lend themselves to commercial interruption, what with their narrative experimentation and their devotion to artistic sensibilities over more profitable concerns. Plus, home media viewers are becoming more accustomed to streaming business ventures that are based financially solely on subscriber fees and not advertiser dollars, e.g. Netflix and Amazon Prime.
Still, there might be a time when a home viewer will be in the mood for something a little more off the beaten path and not want to pay for an additional subscription over what is most likely an outrageous Internet bill — and want to view that off-beat media legally.
So, in that scenario, sometimes Hulu becomes a good option for viewing an oddball movie that screened at an underground film festival — if one doesn’t mind the intrusive ads. Below are five incredible flicks that deserve to be seen, no matter what the option is.

Charles Pinion exists at a unique transection of the modern underground film scene.
A pioneer of the Analog Video Feature Film movement. (That never materialized.) Interaction with the Cinema of Transgression, but not a part of it. Screened back-to-back features at the then-nascent Chicago Underground Film Festival.
He’s been there. He’s done that.
To date, he’s made just three feature films. (Although, hard at work on finishing up his fourth.) And all three — Twisted Issues, Red Spirit Lake and We Await — deserve to be freshly rediscovered and recontextualized. These films put out vibes that stretch out and can be felt in work by makers such as Calvin Lee Reeder, Bob Moricz, Waylon Bacon and others, whether they were specifically influenced by them or not.
All of Pinion’s films can be purchased on DVD from the filmmaker’s website. Gross. Surreal. Unsettling. If that’s your bag...

Saturday Morning Mystery, dir. Spencer Parsons (Amazon | Itunes) Saturday Morning Mystery is one of the best, most original horror movies in recent memory. Director Adam Wingard has received rave reviews for his R-rated, home invasion horror-comedy You’re Next, which screened at several film festivals over the past couple of years and will be released August 23. But his often gore-drenched creative sensibility — and twisted sense of humor — is not everyone’s cup of Darjeeling. In the spring of 2007, for instance, the then just the 24-year-old Wingard appeared on the premiere episode of Fox TV’s On The Lot, a much-hyped but now little-remembered, Steven Spielberg-produced filmmakers’ competition with the first prize of a million-dollar development deal at Dreamworks. As Wingard recalls, he...

Named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” in the summer of 2007, no filmmaker has stuck to his guns like Calvin Lee Reeder. Embodying everything that makes Independent filmmaking dangerous and boundary pushing, Reeders’ short films and features dare audiences to think in a way mainstream cinema will never achieve, and his latest film The Rambler is absolutely no different. Delving into something full of mummies, gore, dark humor, and an endless journey, Reeder will no doubt challenge viewers to interpret the actions on screen in their own way, leaving a highly ambitious story completely up for full dissection.
I recently had the chance to chat with writer/actor/director Calvin Lee Reeder, and the result was an extremely honest dialogue about the inner workings of Independent cinema and how less and less filmmakers are willing to take that gamble on a surreal cinematic experience that explores the unknown.

The Rambler – A man who knows not where he’s going, or what to expect, yet he blindly follows the road ahead and every adventure it may bring. He doesn’t have a purpose, a care in the world, a destination, or even a good reason for the life he leads, he just, well, he just is. Sounds like a kooky premise for a film, eh? A mysterious man who wanders from city to city, getting in to all sorts of trouble just for the sake of weirdness? Well, yes and no. Yes in the sense that abstract film watchers absolutely have one of the strangest stories I’ve ever witnessed to indulge in, but no in the sense that we never know what the hell is actually going on. I mean, this “Rambler” doesn’t give a shit about his life, why should we?

Aimlessly Devoted To You: Reeder Culls More Stars and Less Sense for Sophomore Film
More proof that horror as a genre has been hedged out of midnight movie programming in favor of meandering strangeness is The Rambler, the sophomore feature of Calvin Lee Reeder. Rather than expanding on the mindf*ck bizarro-world shtick that characterized his polarizing 2011 debut, The Oregonian, Reeder seems more eager than ever to agitate, confound, and blow through our conditioned notions of film narrative. Fans of his first film can rejoice, but the rest of us should be praying for the return of David Lynch. Films by directors such as Reeder, who is obviously influenced by the likes of the grand master himself, only highlight how genius someone like Lynch is at making the grisly and bizarre as compelling as it is incomprehensible.

Sundance is always on the move. Skywalker and George Lucas himself are refocusing on the indies and choosing sound design as their point of entry.
Sundance Institute and Skywalker Sound recently announced that the Sundance Institute Music and Sound Design Labs at Skywalker Sound will take place at Skywalker Ranch in 2013 and 2014 and also listed the artists that will participate in the 2013 Labs. This is the first time the two organizations will collaborate to support independent filmmakers and film composers and marks a significant expansion of the Institute’s existing Composers Labs to include sound design.
The Institute has hosted its Composers Labs at Sundance Resort for fiction feature films since 1999 and documentaries since 2005, allowing composers and independent filmmakers to collaboratively explore the process of writing music for film. Fellows also participate in workshops and creative exercises under the guidance of leading film composers and film music professionals acting as Creative Advisors.
Keri Putnam, Executive Director of Sundance Institute, said, “Hosting the Composers Labs at Skywalker Ranch allows an expansion of the program to include sound design, giving further insight into the powerful ways that sound and music can impact independent films. We are deeply grateful to the Skywalker team for working with us to provide our Fellows with the tremendous benefit of accessing this legendary facility”
Josh Lowden, General Manager of Skywalker Sound, said, “We’re very excited to formalize this relationship. Sundance Institute is virtually synonymous with independent film, and Keri and her team have done an amazing job to honor the Institute’s legacy. Twenty-five years ago Skywalker was founded by a filmmaker for filmmakers, and we have never forgotten our roots. We continue to believe in independent filmmaking, and are thrilled to deepen our relationship with the Institute by hosting these Labs at Skywalker.”
The Composers Lab for fiction feature films is a joint initiative of the Institute’s Film Music Program and Feature Film Program, and the Composers Lab for documentaries is hosted by the Film Music Program and Documentary Film Program and Fund.
Peter Golub, Director of the Sundance Institute Film Music Program, said, “Skywalker Sound is a leader in the field of post-production and sound design, and their world-class facilities offer the ideal environment for our Composers Labs. Lab fellows will have access to Skywalker’s sound designers and mixers for ongoing collaboration, as well as the state-of-the-art facility during their stay.”
Artists and projects selected for the 2013 Sundance Music And Sound Design Lab – Documentary (June 3-10) are:

Calvin Lee Reeder has made the kind of movie where more effort seems to have gone into the cast's wardrobe than their dialogue. As the title character, who's never given a proper name, Dermot Mulroney is always clad in cowboy gear—hats, boots—as well as aviator shades (even at night). He seems meant to be channeling Gary Cooper, or at least Timothy Olyphant on Justified, but he just looks like he got lost en route to a fashion shoot. At the start, the rambler gets released from prison, then fired from a job at a pawnshop, where he can't handle firearms due to the conditions of his parole. On a road trip to his brother's Oregon farm, he meets a man who tries to record people's dreams onto VHS tapes, but only succeeds in blowing up their heads. The Scanners refe...

Fresh from destroying the minds of festival goers in the Us and abroad, Calvin Lee Reeder's latest mind-melter, The Rambler, is now preparing for a limited theatrical run. Who would've thunk? The film is not only non-linear, it is anti-linear, taking to task the dogma of logic and slavishness to reality in a way that will repulse and engage in equal measure. We're happy to have the latest trailer for the film as well as the first theatrical dates for The Rambler, beginning on June 7th in advance of its home video/VOD debut on June 25th. I absolutely love Reeder's work and definitely would like to see the film again, so I'm happy that Dallas is back on the schedule. If you are in one of these...

Never thought I'd see the day when a Calvin Lee Reeder film would end up on Blu-ray, but here we are. On June 25, Anchor Bay will release Reeder's Sundance and SXSW audience-dividing nightmare, The Rambler, on Blu-ray and DVD. I just caught the film at Dallas Iff last week, and it looks pretty fantastic on the big screen, so I'd imagine it'll look amazing in HD as well. An amusing note to me is the fact that Dermot Mulroney's name on the cover is at least as big as the title of the film. That's the kind of star power we're dealing with!In addition to this home video release, The Rambler will see limited theatrical release in North America on June 7th. No word on...

The feature film slate for Austin's South by Southwest festival (SXSW) was revealed last week, but as most genre fans know, the real cinematic treasures are lurking in the festival's midnight lineup. As SXSW Programmer Jarod Neece put it: "This year we scoured the globe and brought back a batch that we knew would truly satisfy the gore hounds of SXSW. Full of scares, sex, madness, laughs, chills and major mind f--ks, we hope there's a little something for everyone."
Browsing the titles, it's hard to tear our eyes away from a film called "Big Ass Spider" (directed by Mike Mendez of "The Gravedancers"), but the addition of Rob Zombie's "Lords of Salem," sequel "V/H/S/2," a movie from "Splice"'s Vincenzo Natali ("Haunter"), and vampire tale "Kiss of the Damned" from Xan Cassavetes certainly helps.

The South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival has revealed the films that will make up this year's anticipated Midnighters section, as well as the complete short film lineup. Feauturing four world premieres and three U.S. ones, the nine Midnighters selections include Rob Zombie's "The Lords of Salem," the hyped sequel to last year's "V/H/S," Calvin Lee Reeder's follow-up to "The Oregonian," "The Rambler," and Adam Wingard's Toronto favorite "You're Next." "We work year-round searching for films that will wow our audiences at Midnight. This year we scoured the globe and brought back a batch that we knew would truly satisfy the gore hounds of SXSW," said SXSW Senior Programmer & Operations Manager Jarod Neece in a statement. "Full of scares, sex, madness, laughs, chills and major mind f*cks, we hope there's a little something for everyone." Below are...

It's been a long time coming, and I'm actually kinda late to announce it, but Calvin Lee Reeder's colossal mindfuck nightmare, The Oregonian, has finally hit DVD, and how!The Oregonian is out now in a very limited edition of 300 from Factory 25. The edition includes not only the DVD, but also a 7" of the soundtrack, a newsprint poster of the awesome green furry monster poster, and exclusive new art. The disc itself includes a short from the director titled Little Farm, as well. The Oregonian was in my Top Ten Feel Bad Films of 2011 list, and it definitely deserves that spot. It is an atonal drone of a film designed to unsettle and disturb, and that job it accomplishes in spades. With...

Starting production this week in The Raid 2: Berandal, the sequel to the Indonesian action hit The Raid: Redemption, which is one hell of a film. Kinetic, unforgiving and wildly entertaining, director Gareth Evans’ action spectacular made waves last year and due to its success, a sequel was ordered up. Picking up only a few hours after the first film, shooting on the sequel is now underway and along with a press release, we also have a few stills from the set of the film, which is undergoing a 100 day shoot.
Considering The Raid: Redemption is one of my favourite actions films ever, I couldn’t be more excited for the sequel. Some of the scenes that Evans and his team constructed for the first film still blow my mind. One of the biggest success stories over the past year and half has been Gareth Evans’ The Raid, released as The Raid: Redemption in the Us. So naturally, there’s a lot of anticipation surrounding the sequel, The Raid 2 (released as The Raid 2: Berendal in Indonesia).
The original film debuted at Tiff back in September 2011, won the Midnight Madness Award, and went on to theatres in the spring of 2012. And since then, it’s gained pretty much overnight cult status as one of the best action/martial arts films in recent memory.
Production has officially begun, with Gareth Evans once more directing from his own script, and leading man Iko Uwais returning to take the lead.

The Rambler
Writer/Director: Calvin Lee Reeder
Cast: Dermot Mulroney, Lindsay Pulsipher, Natasha Lyonne, James Cady
Official Synopsis: Upon release from prison, a solitary man known only as “the Rambler” embarks on a mysterious journey en route to reconnecting with his long-lost brother. Traversing treacherous back roads, lost highways, and isolated small towns, he unearths a multitude of bizarre and wickedly depraved slices of Americana.
Performances
Dermot Mulroney anchors the film as the wandering lead character, and he fits perfectly in Reeder's strange cinematic world. Though he's been acting in films since the late 80s, he's rarely played a lead part; that pressure doesn't seem to be an issue for him here, since his performance is one of the film's highlights. Lindsay Pulsipher plays a hypnotic love interest who may or may not actually exist, and she's worked with Reeder enough times to be comfortable acting in his unique vision.

The official one-sheet for writer/director Calvin Lee Reeder’s The Rambler is here in honor of the film's midnight premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, which is taking place January 17-27 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah. Dig it!
The film premieres at Sundance on Monday, January 21st, and the eye candy comes courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, who recently caught up with star Dermot Mulroney. “It’s a very phantasmagoric impressionistic film," he told the site. "It’s shot beautifully, and this really great young hot-shot director put together images and thoughts and really spiritual and some might say psychic elements that turn into this really psychedelic mind-blowing Western style film. There’s no real sign posts in the story. He’s a rambler; he runs into some freaky people; and effed-up shit happens. I mean, I’m answering these questions in an oblique way...
