Exclusive: Anonymous Content, Red Bull Studios and Rise Films have partnered to produce new documentary feature The Balloonists following Swiss explorer Bertrand Piccard and English balloonist Brian Jones. BAFTA and Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker John Dower has come aboard to direct the project and Anonymous Content’s AC Independent will oversee sales.
The Balloonists follows the unlikely duo of Swiss explorer Piccard and British flying instructor Jones who, in 1999, took on the world’s leading aeronauts and ultra-rich adventurers in a race to become the first people to fly nonstop around the world in a hot air balloon. Many in the aviation community believed this to be an impossible feat, after years of failed attempts by balloonists from across the globe. More than most racing sports, ballooning is subject to the capricious whims of nature. An aeronaut must learn to accept the unexpected and respect their position in the hierarchy of the natural world,...

Infamous mystery man D.B. Cooper is at the center of a new Netflix documentary about the enduring legacy behind his 1971 headline-grabbing supposed disappearance.
“D.B. Cooper: Where Are You?!” debuts on the streamer July 13. The official logline reads: “In 1971, a skyjacker parachutes off a plane with a bag of stolen cash — and gets away with it. Decades later, his identity remains a compelling mystery.”
Cooper demanded 200,000 and four parachutes after hijacking a flight out of Portland, Or, in the middle of the night. He then jumped out of the aircraft and was never seen (or caught) again. Cooper has become a sort of folklore anti-hero, with commentators musing on his “badass” persona that made him “kind of a god.”
Dubbed an “anti-hero individualist thinker,” Cooper has been at the center of numerous conspiracy theories, with the FBI saying that now “citizen sleuths” may have cracked what really happened to Cooper.

Netflix’s three-part documentary on Sophie Toscan Du Plantier, the French film and TV producer who was killed while at her isolated holiday cottage in West Cork, Ireland, in 1996, is to premiere on June 30.
Sophie: A Murder In West Cork is produced by Lightbox and will bring together contributions from her family, including her son Pierre-Louis Baudey, with that of Ian Bailey, the man at the center of the investigation.
My Scientology Movie director John Dower is attached to helm the project, while the executive producers are Simon Chinn, Jonathan Chinn, and Suzanne Lavery. Sarah Lambert produces.
Lavery and Chinn said: “Sophie was much more than a victim of a murder. She was a mother, a daughter, a sister, a filmmaker and a writer. Whatever actually happened on that cold December night in 1996, the story is one of a collision of worlds, cultures and characters and it was that which drew us to it.

Happiest Season (Clea DuVall)
Happiest Season, Hollywood’s first major lesbian Christmas rom-com, has everything you’d expect from a Christmas movie: snow; sweaters; mismatched family members coming together under one roof; characters saying they hate Christmas and then succumbing to holiday cheer; conflict; satisfying resolution. Director and co-writer Clea DuVall embraces cliches, but filtering them through a lesbian perspective allows old tropes to gain new context. Family dysfunction carries extra weight when viewed through the lens of heteronormativity. The happy couple’s falling-out hits deeper because it’s wrought with the anxiety of coming out. Their fairytale ending feels all the more precious because it’s hard won,...

The Mystery of D.B. Cooper is a surprisingly smooth ride. You would think, with all the suspects and twists the story takes, it would run into some heavy turbulence. But director John Dower and his crew navigate the story of the only unsolved airplane hijacking in U.S. history artfully.
Dower sets the tone of the times before the documentary leaps into the wild. He intercuts an interview with the stewardess on the legendary flight with period airline advertisements and clips from informational shorts. What a difference the flying experience was in the early ‘70s. The food looks edible, there appears to be ample leg room, and airline stewardesses’ weight was monitored more than boarding passengers. There were no metal detectors or security to speak of. By the mid-1970s, hijackings to Cuba became fodder for late night jokes and air travel mishaps became their own film subgenre.

The FBI officially closed the D.B. Cooper case in 2016, forty-five years after he hijacked a plane, extorted $200,000, and jumped somewhere between Seattle and Reno. It’s the only unsolved case of air piracy in the United States and the fact it remained open for so long was reason enough for the bureau to cut its losses and put resources dedicated to its numerous dead-ends elsewhere. Cooper would be in his eighties or nineties at this point anyway, if he’s even still alive—a long shot for some who don’t believe anyone could’ve survive the rough terrain he’d have needed to walk through in the dark upon a hypothetically safe parachute landing. So what would a concrete answer truly provide? Closure? Isn’t the mystery the appeal?

As the final season of “Mad Men” weaved its way toward its beguiling and transcendent anti-climax of an ending, people on the internet began speculating that advertising maverick Don Draper would actually turn out to be D.B. Cooper, the pseudo-anonymous sky pirate who hijacked a 727 out of Portland in the fall of 1971 and eventually jumped out of the plane with $200,000 in ransom money, never to be seen again. To this day, it remains the only unsolved crime of its kind in U.S. history, and “Mad Men” ultimately had no interest in speculating about who “D.B. Cooper” might really have been.
While it’s true that Don Draper (née Dick Whitman) was a human disappearing act with a flair for reinvention and a surplus of the god-like confidence required to pull off a mid-air heist, it’s hard to imagine a less satisfying or plausible conclusion to one...

"Cooper figured it out! And he got away with it... I wanna be a Cooper." HBO has debuted an official trailer for a compelling true crime documentary titled The Mystery of D.B. Cooper, from Emmy-nominated doc filmmaker John Dower. It examines the well-known case, which is largely regarded as the greatest unsolved heist in American history. In November of 1971, a man hijacked a Boeing 727 from Portland, got a $200,000 ransom, then jumped out into the wilderness with a parachute. His whereabouts or his identity have never been discovered. Drawing from a combination of recreated and archival footage, as well as exclusive interviews with those most connected to the infamous case and its likeliest culprits, this edge-of-your-seat documentary also explores how the heist inspired copycat hijackings and elevated Cooper to "legend" status. The Mystery of D.B. Cooper paints a "dynamic portrait of a fabled fugitive" whose unparalleled story became folklore.

On Nov. 24, 1971, night before Thanksgiving, a man identified as Dan Cooper hijacked a Northwest Orient Boeing 727 flight bound for Seattle. He told the pilots to circle around a few times before he parachuted out with $200,000, never to be heard from again. A team of 40 FBI agents, criminologists, journalists, and attorneys worked the case for decades. In 1972, 15 copycat hijackings were pulled. The last D.B. Cooper wannabe hijacked a plane on July 11, 1980. He demanded $600,000, two parachutes, and the assassination of his boss. A stewardess gave him a valium and he settled for three cheeseburgers. In 1981, Treat Williams played the elusive criminal in The Pursuit of D. B. Cooper. The FBI officially closed the case in 2016, citing a lack of strong leads.
But filmmaker John Dower will launch an investigation into the only unsolved airplane hijacking in U.S. history almost 50 years after the disappearing act. The Mystery of D.B. Cooper...

Exclusive: The BBC and HBO are co-producing a feature-length documentary on the unsolved mystery of plane hijacker D.B. Cooper, nearly 50 years after he vanished without a trace in 1971.
The Mystery Of D.B. Cooper is helmed by John Dower — an Emmy-nominated director who made Louis Theroux film My Scientology Movie — and the producer is Minnow Films, which has won BAFTAs for documentaries including 7/7: One Day in London and The Detectives.
The film seeks to unravel the mystery surrounding D.B. Cooper, who boarded a Northwest Orient Airlines plane in November 1971 and hijacked the flight while it was still on the tarmac. He claimed to have a bomb in his briefcase and demanded four parachutes and $200,000, which he exchanged for the 36 passengers on board.

Taking a just-fresh-enough approach to justify another trip to the deep "Isn't Scientology bizarre?" well, John Dower's My Scientology Movie sends journalist Louis Theroux on a straight-faced mission to let the organization's muckity-mucks speak for themselves, knowing full well that's never going to happen. The backup plan in this case involves not just the usual interviews with prominent apostates, but an intriguing use of actors to re-create some of the stories we've been hearing for years about what it's like to be in the inner circle. Those whose curiosity wasn't sated by Alex Gibney's highbrow Going Clear will appreciate this...

BBC journalist Louis Theroux explores the Church of Scientology in his new documentary, “My Scientology Movie.” “Following a long fascination with the religion and with much experience in dealing with eccentric, unpalatable and unexpected human behavior, the beguilingly unassuming Theroux won’t take no for an answer when his request to enter the Church’s headquarters is turned down,” reads the official description of the film.

While last year’s Going Clear was a widely-discussed, biting look into the controversial religion of Scientology, this year ushers in maverick documentarian John Dower‘s own look into the shrouded world of the church. His film, titled very simply My Scientology Movie, has now been treated with a trailer. Filmed in a more classically cinematic way than many documentaries, the almost anti-cinéma vérité stylings gives the film a shared look to many modern comedies rather than its own true peers in the non-fiction realm.
We said in our review: “My Scientology Movie is exactly what it promises to be: a personal journalistic rattrap that’s not quite as comprehensive as Gibney’s film. Directed by John Dower (who remains off camera), the film melds performative elements to create a kind of unintentional buddy comedy. "We have their attention." Following Alex Gibney's fascinating investigative film Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, Magnolia has debuted an official trailer for a documentary titled My Scientology Movie, starring documentary "maverick" Louis Theroux, mostly seen in his own TV series from the UK. Theroux heads to Los Angeles and begins his own investigation into the Church of Scientology, encountering all kinds of wacky people and aggressive resistance. This one is a bit different than Going Clear in that it's a personal story about one guy hoping to get his own peek inside Scientology, but of course they won't let that happen. This definitely does look "entertaining", I'm just wondering if it reveals any new info on this "cult". Here's the trailer (+ poster) John Dower's documentary My Scientology Movie, direct from YouTube: Inspired by the Church's use of filming techniques, and aided by ex-members of the...

Feature trailer is now below for 'Louis Theroux: My Scientology Movie,' created in collaboration with director John Dower and two-time Academy Award® winning producer Simon Chinn (Searching for Sugar Man, Man on Wire).
Following a long fascination with the religion, and with a lot of experience dealing with eccentric human behaviour, incomparable British broadcaster Louis Theroux won’t take no for an answer when his request to enter the Church of Scientology’s Los Angeles headquarters is turned down. Theroux’s insatiable curiosity motivates him to understand what life inside the Church is really like, and with the aid of former second-in-command at the Church, Mark ‘Marty’ Rathbun, he uses actors to replay incidents people claim they experienced with high profile members such as Tom Cruise and leader David Miscavige.
'My Scientology Movie' will get a limited Irish & UK release on September 8th.

Journalist and program maker Louis Theroux is fascinated by religion and has extensive experience in dealing with eccentric and extreme behavior . He is not throwing in the towel if his request is denied to visit the headquarters of the Church of Scientology .
Inspired by the film techniques used by the Church itself, and aided by former members , he hires actors to play after Tom Cruise and Scientology leader David Miscavige and thus gain insight into the process of the organisation.
In a bizarre twist Theroux discovered that the Church at the same time making a movie about him. The central problem of making a film about secretive organizations and pyramid schemes like Scientology or Herbalife is that they can retain some control of the narrative by simply remaining quiet while intimidating SPs (Scientology’s term of Subversive Persons) from the sidelines. They should know better than to chase after BBC reporter Louis Theroux, perhaps best known in the U.S. for his show Weird Weekends. As a gonzo journalist, he’ll go to any lengths for his story, including making a cameo in a porn flick (he remained clothed). Sharing the same dry British sensibilities as Nick Broomfield, they both search for truth in the absurdity and make works that are intentionally and unintentionally hilarious as they attempt to explain what certain folks in power would prefer they didn’t.

The Church of Scientology has become the big bad of documentary filmmakers. Last year brought us Going Clear, a movie that delved into the bizarre history of Scientology and the strange, terrifying figure of its current leader David Miscavige. This year brought us a book by former Scientologist and actress Leah Remini, reigniting interest in the notoriously secretive and notoriously litigious group. Now, My Scientology Movie, from British journalist Louis Theroux and director John Dower, takes us ever deeper into the weird world of Scientology and the people that…make movies about Scientology.
As the title suggests, My Scientology Movie takes a novel approach. Rather than making a straight documentary, Theroux and Dower take their inspiration from Scientology’s love of big, lavish productions and decide to produce huge reenactments of alleged abusive events.
After being turned down for interviews by everyone within the Church, Theroux brings in the most...

- We Got This Covered
Probably because it’s completely barking mad, we seem to be endlessly fascinated by Scientology. The religion/cult, discovered/made up by sci-fi author L. Ron Hubbard, has been the subject of endless speculation in its half-century history, partly thanks to its secretive nature. But despite it counting a number of major movie stars among its ranks (or more likely, because of that fact), cinematic investigations of Hubbard’s creation had mostly been limited to John Travolta’s propaganda movie flop “Battlefield Earth.” But things have changed of late. Paul Thomas Anderson’s thinly-veiled story of the founding of the religion, “The Master,” was followed within a couple of years by Alex Gibney’s scintillating exposé documentary, “Going Clear,” which was released earlier this year. Now, we get another non-fiction examination of the phenomenon, with John Dower’s “My Scientology Movie,” fronted by the well-known British journalist/presenter Louis Theroux and produced by.

Take an epic sporting event, cut together the highlights and interviews with the athlete (or athletes) and coach (or coaches), and you have an instant crowd-pleaser, because the crowd already been pleased once and knows it will be again. I expected Thriller in Manila to be that documentary until the build up of "the greatest fight of all time" between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier unexpectedly wheezes, as a 63 year old, nearly incoherent Frazier walks into his decrepit Badlands of Philadelphia gym. With one shot of the little, cluttered room he lives in upstairs, the tone shifts to the unapologetic telling of Joe Frazier's side of the story.
