Kurt Russell has been doing the press rounds for the Godzilla series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and if there’s one thing that this press tour has made very clear, it’s the fact that people loves to talk to Russell about John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing (watch or buy it Here). The latest ones to bring up The Thing him were the folks at GQ, and this time Russell took the opportunity to reveal that he wasn’t a fan of the sombrero Carpenter had his character MacReady wear.
Russell told GQ (with thanks to Syfy Wire for the transcription of the video), “I went into wardrobe … and when I was in there, I noticed, sitting over on this chair by itself, was this enormous sombrero. And finally, at some point, I said to the wardrobe person, ‘What’s the deal with the sombrero?’ And they said, ‘Oh,...

For 41 years, people have been discussing and debating the ending of John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing (watch or buy it Here). People who worked on the movie can’t even seem to agree on what was happening in the final scene. Cinematographer Dean Cundey thought he had given away the answer, but then Carpenter came in and said Cundey had “no clue” what he was talking about. So the mystery remains. And for star Kurt Russell, it’s fun to hear that people are still talking about that ending.
Russell is currently doing the press rounds for the Godzilla series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and the ending of The Thing came up during his interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Russell said (with thanks to Screen Rant for the transcription), “We talked about that, the ending of that movie, John and I, for a long, long time. We...

Legendary filmmaker John Carpenter is currently doing the press rounds to promote his TV series Suburban Screams, which is available to watch on the Peacock streaming service. (You can read our review of Suburban Screams Here). We’re forty-one years down the line from the release of John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing (watch or buy it Here), and fans are still wondering what exactly was going on with the last two characters in the final scene of the film. Of course, Carpenter knows – and he says that he’s the only one who knows. While cinematographer Dean Cundey has previously said that he specifically lit the scene to indicate which of the two characters had or hadn’t been assimilated by “the thing”, Carpenter refuted his claim during an interview with ComicBook.com, saying that Cundey “has no clue” what was going on in that moment.
Cundey presented what fans refer to as the “eye gleam theory”. He said that the characters were lit in a specific way throughout the movie so that the ones who were still human would have a gleam of light in their eyes.

Legendary director John Carpenter first worked with the great character actor Keith David on his 1982 film The Thing (watch or buy it Here), which has gone on to earn a reputation as being one of the best horror movies ever made. Six years later, they collaborated again on the cult classic sci-fi thriller They Live (watch it Here)… and then, apparently, they went thirty-five years without seeing each other in person. Recently, they finally crossed paths again – and David marked the occasion by sharing a picture of their reunion on social media. You can check it out at the bottom of this article.
David didn’t provide any information on what brought them back together. Carpenter did recently reveal that he has directed a TV series called Suburban Screams, which filmed in Prague while he directed it from the comfort of his own home. It didn’t require much movement,...

John Carpenter's "The Thing" may be widely regarded as a sci-fi horror masterpiece nowadays, but it suffered a gruesome reception when it was first released in the summer of 1982. Critics savaged it, citing everything from lack of characterization to excessive gore; Vincent Canby of the New York Times dismissed it as "instant junk" while Roger Ebert called it a "great barf-bag movie." Opinions of film critics don't always correlate with the tastes of the film-going public, of course, but audiences also stayed away in droves. While "The Thing" made a small profit, it was far from the box office hit that executives at Universal expected.
The frosty reception also brought Carpenter's excellent early run to an end, after "Assault on Precinct 13," "Halloween," "The Fog," and "Escape From New York" established him as a major genre filmmaker whose movies also made decent bank. Thankfully, "The Thing" didn't disappear without...

Much has been made of "The Thing," John Carpenter's 1982 box office bomb-turned-genre darling. Whether it's Bill Lancaster's adapted script of John W. Campbell Jr.'s 1938 novella "Who Goes There?," Rob Bottin's gnarly special effects (with an assist from dog-Thing creature designer Stan Winston), or Carpenter's meticulous direction that's light on the jump scares and heavy on the dread, the result is now considered one of the great gargoyles in the horror movie pantheon. Though the story is about an alien organism infiltrating an Arctic research post, and though there are plenty of tentacles about, the narrative is largely character-driven as paranoia and mistrust grow among the isolated cadre of men, led by Kurt Russell's pilot, R.J. MacReady.

After all of the frightening things that John Carpenter has brought to life on screen, it's hard to imagine the filmmaker being intimidated by anything. But even doing things for the first time scared the "Master of Horror" early in his career. Carpenter caught Hollywood's attention in 1978 when he re-invented the slasher genre with "Halloween." After a couple of TV movies, he followed his massive success in horror with another thriller, "The Fog." But a few years later in 1982, Carpenter would tackle his first big-budget studio project, the sci-fi horror film "The Thing."
It was the first of three loosely connected films that would become known as Carpenter's "apocalypse trilogy." A remake of the 1951 Howard Hawks film "The Thing from Another World" and an adaptation of the John W. Campbell, Jr. novella "Who Goes There?" in "The Thing," a group of scientists stationed in Antarctica is stalked by an alien...

John Carpenter’s 1982 film The Thing (watch or buy it Here) is widely considered to be one of the greatest horror movies ever made – but when it was first released, The Thing was a box office failure that was torn apart by critics, who accused Carpenter of being a “gore pornographer”. So we decided to dig into the making of this flop-turned-classic with a new episode of our Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, which you can check out in the embed above.
Carpenter directed The Thing from a screenplay by Bill Lancaster, which was based on John W. Campbell Jr.’s 1938 novella Who Goes There?, which has previously been brought to the screen as the 1951 film The Thing from Another World. Carpenter’s film has the following synopsis:
In remote Antarctica, a group of American research scientists are disturbed at their base camp by a helicopter shooting at a sled dog.

When John Carpenter’s The Thing hit theaters back in June 1982, the only thing scarier than the film were the reviews. Vincent Canby of The New York Times called it “instant junk” while Cinefantastique featured The Thing on one front cover alongside the question, “Is this the most hated movie of all time?”
Yet, if anything, the past 40 years has seen The Thing become one of the most beloved sci-fi horror movies of all time, influencing everything from Stranger Things to Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. To paraphrase Die Hard 2, it was simply a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, with Carpenter’s sci-fi led gorefest arriving alongside Blade Runner on June 25 of its year, just a few weeks after the family friendly alien fun of E.T.

Military ensemble pictures work well when the excitement is all about the job and working under pressure: Charlton Heston, Stacy Keach, Ned Beatty and even David Carradine are excellent in this credible story about a near-impossible rescue of submariners trapped 1400 feet below. It’s a solid Navy disaster scenario, unusually authentic and realistic — until the dramatists require actor Ronny Cox to act like an emotional idiot. Those U.K. disc producers do it justice with some excellent extras, including a piece with a Navy specialist who worked with the rescue craft seen in the movie… and who later became a well-known film historian, author and film series organizer.

Exclusive: SAG-AFTRA’s national election committee has dismissed a plethora of post-election protests that were filed by the losing candidates and their supporters in the union’s recent election in which Fran Drescher, running on the ruling party’s Unite for Strength (Ufs) slate, was elected president, and Joely Fisher, running on the opposition Membership First slate, was voted in as national secretary-treasurer, defeating Anthony Rapp.
Matthew Modine, who was defeated in his second bid for the presidency, was one of several MembershipFirst candidates who filed protests, though Fisher, his victorious running mate, did not challenge the outcome. Other complaints were filed by SAG-AFTRA members Peter Antico, Adam Nelson, Chuck Slavin, David Clennon, Samantha Hartson and Kevin Cannon.
“We have carefully reviewed and considered the protests, the parties’ submissions, the Election Policy, the SAG-AFTRA Constitution, and applicable federal election law,” the committee said in its decision. “We conclude that there...

Emmy-winning actor David Clennon said in an op-ed today that he declined an audition for a new Netflix series because he didn’t want to work with two Israeli producers previously involved in a television show that casts Palestinians in a negative light.
In an op-ed for TruthOut.org, Clennon said creative executive producers Avi Issacharoff and Lior Raz were involved in the Israel television series Fauda, which depicts a Hamas terrorist being hunted by a Rambo-like soldier from the Israeli Defense Forces. When Clennon was approached to audition for the Netflix series with the working title Sycamore, he began doing some investigating.
When he discovered the involvement of Issacharoff and Raz, he decided not to audition for the Netflix role of Martin Wexler, an American politician. The show plans to start filming in September in New York and Tel Aviv and is described as a political espionage thriller.

The new trailer for It: Chapter Two arrived today, and with it a lot more updates on the horror sequel. We’ve already heard from Jessica Chastain and the inclusion of more blood in the movie, while the reception to the preview so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Now, we’ve learnt that Bill Hader slipped in a tribute to John Carpenter’s The Thing as part of his role as the adult Richie Tozier in the film.
Speaking at a San Diego Comic-Con event, Hader admitted that one particularly notable piece of improvisation made it into the final cut. When recording additional dialogue for the sequel, he had to improvise different reactions to a so-far unknown (but likely pretty bizarre) scene and the actor went with the classic line from The Thing: “You’ve got to be fucking kidding.”

Costa-Gavras’ superlative political thriller begins with a skeptical attitude, but soon pulls viewers into the depth and breadth of a monstrous political crime aided and abetted by our own U.S. government. Sissy Spacek and Jack Lemmon headline a strong cast, in a story that our State Department called a pack of lies — until the truth became undeniable.

Fans of thirtysomething were treated today to a reunion of the creators and cast of the landmark drama series that aired on ABC from 1987 to 1991. Creators Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick were joined onstage at the Atx Television Festival in Austin by actors Polly Draper, Timothy Busfield, David Clennon, Melanie Mayron and Peter Horton to talk about a show, which, at the time, was different than anything on the air.
During that particular era of TV, Herskovitz says the landscape was filled with doctor, police and lawyer franchises. He admits he and Zwick weren’t looking to do TV at the time as they were more steeped in film. Even so, they created a simple show about the relationships between baby boomers in Philadelphia.
“It wasn’t written like a TV show,” said Draper. “It was different from what I have seen before. This bridged the gap [betwen film and TV] and changed the whole course of TV history.

John and Matthew are watching every single live-action film starring Meryl Streep.
#10 —Molly Gilmore, a married woman who, against her better judgment, falls in love with a married man.
John: Falling in Love is my favorite movie. Well, not exactly. I only just watched it for the first time, so I can’t exactly gauge the extent of my affection. But I’ll repeat: Falling in Love is my favorite movie. It’s hard not to fall in love (sorry) with a movie where Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro have an affair in 1983 New York City, aided by best pals Dianne Wiest and Harvey Keitel. After a chance encounter at the beautiful Manhattan bookstore Rizzoli on Christmas Eve, the two meet again months later, care of the blessed Metro North, and eventually have their desires and marriages tested. Character deaths, screwdrivers, and blow-up dolls: John Carpenter’s The Thing had some fasinating scenes cut before release...
The following contains spoilers for The Thing.
Critically mauled on release and largely overlooked in cinemas, John Carpenter’s The Thing has only grown in stature since 1982. What were once condemned as deficiencies - its graphic gore and violence, icy tone and low-key characterization - are now generally regarded as positives. Its simple story about a group of scientists and misfits who encounter a shape-shifting alien in their Antarctic outpost, The Thing has aged remarkably well for a 35-year-old film: Rob Bottin’s practical effects are still extraordinarily imaginative, and fans still debate the finer points of its action today. Who sabotaged the fridge full of blood samples? Were MacReady and Childs still human at the end?

Thirty-five years later, questions remain about the ultimate in alien terror. “The Thing” features an ambiguous ending — what becomes of MacReady and Childs after the screen fades to black? — and a pivotal sequence that answers a number of important questions while raising another: Who sabotaged the blood bank? Collative Learning takes a look in its latest video.

The scene in question finds the besieged residents of Outpost 31 using a blood test in an attempt to figure out who among them has been infected by the Thing. Collative Learning’s obsessive examination of this central mystery is like something out of “JFK,” with John Carpenter’s sci-fi/horror classic becoming its own kind of Zapruder film, and following along with it is almost as confusing as it is revealing.

Now the stacked lineup is set to squeeze in two more: HBO’s “The Comeback” and the 30th anniversary of “thirtysomething.”
Lisa Kudrow, who co-created, executive produced and starred in “The Comeback,” will join fellow co-creator Michael Patrick King, cast member and producer Dan Bucatinsky, and cast member Laura Silverman for a reunion panel on the cult favorite. By now you'll have had the chance to catch David Fincher's Gone Girl in cinemas, and you might be wondering what will happen to Rand and Marybeth Elliott's Amazing Amy book series in the wake of their daughter's exploits.
The pair (played by David Clennon and Lisa Baines in the film) managed to make - and lose - a fortune writing children's books based on an idealised version of their daughter, but there's certainly no sugarcoating the actions of Amy Dunne by the time the credits roll.
Now, courtesy of 20th Century Fox, we're getting a playful glimpse into the future with the above mock book cover, designed by artist Kirk Van Wormer.
This might well be the kind of provocative book to solve the Elliotts' crippling financial woes and replenish their daughter's trust fund!

When you control perception you control reality. You become a submerged rudder that secretly steers opinion to your desired location, while society is unaware that their destination was predetermined by an outside source. David Fincher’s latest film Gone Girl emerges itself in the gratuitous glory of playing with this idea. Fincher has crafted a well-dressed B-movie that takes hitchcockian thrills and adds the right pinch of social commentary. Gone Girl is a mystery thriller in every sense of the word, but it doesn’t stop there—it is clearly after more.
Fincher is once again adapting an acclaim novel, but this time he gets an assist from screenwriter Gillian Flynn who is also responsible for penning the novel.

20th Century Fox released their new drama/thriller flick, "Gone Girl" into theaters this weekend. I just watched it,and thought that it was quite interesting with a wicked crazy storyline, hardcore drama, and more. Its stars: Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Kim Dickens, Patrick Fugit, Carrie Coon, and David Clennon. In the new flick, character Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) has major problems with his wife ,Amy Dunne (Rosemund Pike) to the point of violence. He also cheats on her with a hot 20 something. So, one day, Nick returns home to find a smashed coffee table. His wife Amy is missing. Her disappearance creates a media frenzy, and his awkward behavior on camera is interpreted as evidence of psychopathy and guilt. If that weren't enough, he learns that Amy was preggers and the circumstantial evidence mounts against him, causing him to become the prime suspect for her supposed murder.

'Gone Girl' weekend box office: Biggest David Fincher opening weekend ever? For Nick Cave in Jane Pollard and Iain Forsyth's documentary 20,000 Days On Earth and Stanley Kubrick with Errol Flynn in Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland's The Last Days Of Robin Hood, Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita played a principal role. In David Fincher's case, it was not Humbert Humbert or Lolita but the unknowable Clare Quilty who made him understand an aspect of character development.

Adapting one of the most talked-about books to emerge in recent years, David Fincher has taken on an impressive challenge with Gone Girl, and it’s understandable that the Oscar buzz is already surrounding the film.

And after recently dropping four new teaser posters, Fox is giving us another look with the theatrical trailer, as promised.
