It’s not often that a debut director leaps into the awards conversation. But Regina King, who won a supporting actress Oscar for 2019’s “If Beale Street Could Talk,” got voters talking by coordinating a quartet of strong performances in a timely and entertaining period piece.
Directing Kemp Powers’ play adaptation “One Night in Miami” brought star power to an embattled fall festival season, landing high-profile slots at the Venice, Toronto, Zurich and London film festivals, catapulting the film and the helmer into the awards race, earning the ensemble a SAG nomination.
“It is not lost on me that the respect that I’ve garnered as an actor definitely carried over as a director,” King said in Variety’s Directors on Directors discussion. “And I know a lot of young directors or women directors who don’t have that walking in.”

Amazon plans to release “One Night in Miami” later this year and sees the film as a potential awards contender. As announced earlier Thursday, “One Night in Miami” will have its worldwide debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
Amazon nabbed the film after a competitive bidding war between a number of studios. Chris Pine is in negotiations to star in a reboot of “The Saint,” based on the 1920s book series written by Leslie Charteris.
The movie follows Simon Templar, better known as The Saint, a Robin Hood-esque criminal and thief for hire who goes on a globetrotting adventure.
Dexter Fletcher (“Rocketman”) will direct the film and Seth Grahame-Smith wrote the script. Lorenzo Di Bonaventura is producing along with Brad Krevoy and Mark Vahradian. Robert Evans, who served as a producer on the original film and died in 2019, also helped produce.

Exclusive: Glee alumna Vanessa Lengies has been cast as a series regular opposite Josh Peck in Turner & Hooch, Disney+’s reboot of the classic 1989 buddy-cop comedy feature. The TV series, which has a 12-episode order, comes from Matt Nix and 20th Century Fox TV.
Like the movie, the hourlong series centers on Scott Turner (Peck), who now is a U.S. marshal — versus the police detective played by Tom Hanks in the movie. When the ambitious, buttoned-up marshal inherits a big unruly dog, he soon realizes the pet he didn’t want may be the partner he needs.
Lengies will play Erica, the chief trainer at the Us Marshal K-9 facility. When she’s with a dog, her cute awkwardness disappears and she is a natural leader. Erica is less comfortable with people, especially cute guys like Scott Turner (Peck), who is oblivious to Erica’s interest in him.
