Hitting theaters on June 16th is the long-awaited film, The Flash.
The film was screened at CinemaCon on Tuesday and below are some of the reactions.
The Flash is hands down one of the best superhero films of all time. No joke, The Flash is the ultimate movie going experience as it has a little bit of everything! Action, emotion, heart, humor and plenty of nostalgia. Ezra Miller is phenomenal as dual Barry Allens. Michael… pic.twitter.com/F7SHA30vZM

Just saw the first ever public screening of The Flash at CinemaCon. It is a dazzling trip thru time as the DC universe indeed flashes before our eyes. Not just a great new addition to DC but a wild and surprising tribute to what came before. A triumph for Ezra and Keatons return.

I’m honestly floored it’s this good.

The Flash has finally released a full trailer, one that leans as heavily on its Batman connections as it possibly can. That’s no surprise, considering that this movie prominently boasts the return of Michael Keaton to the role of the Dark Knight for the first time in 30 years, a feat that even the most fervent DC fans would have once considered impossible.
And despite the very public troubles of star Ezra Miller, the uphill battle of public perception that films tied to the soon-to-be-defunct Dceu face, and the dawning of a new era under DC Studios chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran over the next few years, The Flash got a serious vote of confidence from Warner Bros. with an early screening at CinemaCon in Las Vegas and a press event in Los Angeles that yielded positive reactions. Don’t know if you’ve heard, but Batman is in The Flash movie. Although the film stars Ezra Miller as the Barry Allen of two worlds, the movie also features not only Ben Affleck’s Batman of the Snyderverse but the return of Michael Keaton as the Dark Knight.
With his appearance in the canceled Batgirl movie all but buried, The Flash will mark the first time Keaton has donned the cape and cowl since 1992’s Batman Returns. But a Batcave shot included in a recent TV spot for the film hints at a longer legacy for Keaton’s Batman, one that we unfortunately didn’t get to see back in the heyday of the Burtonverse.
In the teaser, we get a brief glimpse at several Batsuits, giving us a better look at the unseen history of Keaton’s Batman. Some of these suits are familiar — two of them...

Check out the stellar new trailer for The Flash.
Directed by Andy Muschietti, Ezra Miller reprises their role as Barry Allen in the DC Super Hero’s first-ever standalone feature film.
Worlds collide in “The Flash” when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?...

Formative Friendships in Armageddon Time
The 1980 backdrop of James Gray’s semi-autobiographical drama feels familiar: A celebrity turned politician challenges the establishment, racial tensions simmer and socioeconomic disparities loom large. And one comforting time-honored aspect endures: Queens sixth-graders Paul Graff (Banks Repeta) and Johnny Davis (Jaylin Webb) dress alike. “Because they’re best friends,” says costume designer Madeline Weeks, who kept the cast in late-’70s wardrobe, conveying the era’s pre-fast-fashion consumer mindset.
Paul, from a middle-class, two-parent Jewish family, and Johnny, a Black boy confronting the daily trauma of racism at school (and in the world at large), bond over their creative aspirations. Paul fantasizes of being a “famous artist,” while Johnny yearns to join NASA and see a Sugarhill Gang concert. “Johnny and Paul love style,” says Weeks. The last few years have seen Marvel Studios push the boundaries in terms of their costume designs, reinventing familiar looks while adapting new clothing from the comics. However, each Phase of the MCU has boasted a standout suit, which not only includes plenty of character-driven details, but also looks amazing and heavily draws from the source material.
When judging a costume therefore, it’s important to take into account the artwork on the page, how those attires actually interact with the narrative, their functionality on screen, and how iconic they have become. Each of these costumes bring something unique to the wider wardrobe of Marvel, and are standout pieces because of the nuanced choices the incredible costume designers made; a team of people that continue to be the unsung heroes of the entire franchise.

Sam Mendes’ “Empire of Light,” a love story and ode to cinema houses, is dividing critics after playing at the Telluride and Toronto film festivals earlier this month. However, Searchlight Pictures remains confident in its awards prospects.
“Empire” is among this season’s divisive films, including “Bardo” from Alejandro G. Iñárritu and “The Son” from Florian Zeller. However, one of the agreed-upon highlights of the film is the quality of the actors’ performances — notably Oscar winner Olivia Colman, breakout star Micheal Ward and veteran actor Toby Jones.
As categories become upended with the news of Michelle Williams campaigning for lead actress, instead of supporting, Ward’s campaign is cementing its strategy early by seeking supporting actor consideration for this awards season, Variety has confirmed. Playing Stephen, a young ticket-taker that begins a love affair with Hilary (Colman), a middle-aged woman coming out of a mental health episode, Ward holds his...

It has been another strange and uncertain year for Hollywood, with the pandemic hitting cinemas hard and streaming services rising to hold the fort. It has also been a year in which we’ve seen a growing diversity in front of, and behind the camera, with an increasing focus on new voices and new stories being told.
Last year saw Bong Joon-ho ‘s Parasite achieve Oscar greatness and, for a brief pre-covid moment, it seemed that the world of cinema was beginning to embrace a wider world. The 2021 BAFTAs showed signs this was continuing with Minari, Another Round and Promising Young Woman taking home a clutch of awards each.
This year’s American Academy Awards will be a strange affair, certainly one to remember.
Here is the full list of nominations with Winners in bold.

“Mank” is the only film in contention at the 2021 Oscars to break the double digit barrier in the nominations count. This Netflix period picture reaped a leading 10 bids. In a six-way tied for second place with, appropriately enough, six nominations apiece are “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” All seven of these films are up for Best Picture. That race is rounded out by five-time contender “Promising Young Woman.”

The films in contention for the 2021 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Emma,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Mank,” “Mulan,” and “Pinocchio.” Our current odds show “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (16/5) to be the frontrunner, followed in order by “Emma” (39/10), “Mank” (4/1), “Mulan” (9/2), and “Pinocchio” (9/2).
This is the sixth time that Alexandra Byrne (“Emma”) has competed for this award. Only 12 others have received as many or more nominations for their costuming work. She previously prevailed in 2008 for “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” after first earning a bid in 1999 for the film’s predecessor, “Elizabeth.” She was later recognized for her work on a third film that included Queen Elizabeth I as a main character: “Mary Queen of Scots” (2019). Her remaining two bids came for “Hamlet” (1997) and “Finding Neverland” (2005).

The race for makeup and hair is particularly noteworthy this season. It includes transforming Viola Davis into the pioneering blues singer of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” turning Glenn Close into the fiery Appalachian grandmother of “Hillbilly Elegy,” adding floral flourishes to Anya Taylor-Joy’s titular matchmaker in “Emma,” meticulously recreating Hollywood’s Golden Age in black-and-white in “Mank,” and creating a unique wooden look to the titular puppet of “Pinocchio.”
But with the Academy tilting toward transforming real-life people in recent years, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” is the favorite, especially after its sweep of the coveted Muahs Guild Awards. Plus, Davis is the favorite in the Best Actress race. She landed her fourth Oscar nomination — the most of any Black actress — as the sexy, subversive Rainey. And the actress was boldly uncompromising in demanding verisimilitude with the help of gold teeth, charcoal-like makeup, and a wig made of horsehair. She tapped her personal makeup stylist,...

In preparation for Autumn de Wilde’s Emma, costume designer Alexandra Byrne spent her time researching her favorite time period for clothing. “The reason I like this period is that it’s the beginning of fashion plates being published for women,” Byrne says. “The combination of the fashion plate and looking at the original garments lets you understand them as clothes rather than costumes.” Based on the Jane Austen novel of the same name, and starring Anya Taylor-Joy in the eponymous role, Emma follows Emma Woodhouse, a young woman who spends her time meddling in the romantic lives of those around her. Here, Byrne digs into her fresh, personality-focused approach to a well-loved period story.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Costume Design with a win on April 13 at the Costume Designers Guild Awards. It prevailed in the period design race over two of its Oscar rivals — “Emma” and “Mank” — plus “Judas and the Black Messiah” and “One Night in Miami.”
Its closest Oscar competition could be “Mulan,” which won the fantasy/sci-fi prize at the CDG Awards on Tuesday; the fifth Oscar nominee, “Pinocchio,” was not in contention here. The other CDG winner was the contemporary film “Promising Young Woman.
In its 22-year history, the CDG has previewed only 10 of the Oscar winners for Best Costume Design; seven of these have been period pictures and three have been sci-fi or fantasy flicks. Updated Designing the costumes for Emma, the Autumn de Wilde-directed adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic period novel, was a balance between staying true to the era (the early 1800s) while leaving room for some creativity and artistic license, says Oscar-nominated costume designer Alexandra Byrne.
“To design a period film, you need to know and research the period, so that you can make decisions to enable the storytelling from a point of view of knowledge, as opposed to a point of ignorance,” she said during Focus Features’ panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees awards-season event. “Autumn [de Wilde] wanted to know everything about the period, she wanted the comedy and the humor to come from period, it was our job to really understand it. We’re not here to be museum archivists, we’re here to tell a story, but I think you can only do that truthfully if you...

The unconventional 74th BAFTAs held its first of two ceremonies tonight, with eight awards handed out in the craft categories, plus the Outstanding Contribution to Cinema prize. Scroll down for the list of winners. The main awards take place tomorrow (April 11).
Host Clara Amfo opened proceedings by paying tribute to the late Prince Philip, who died yesterday at the age of 99. The Duke of Edinburgh was BAFTA’s first president 60 years ago, beginning a line of Royal patronage which continues with his son Prince William, who had been scheduled to make an appearance during the awards tonight and tomorrow but has pulled out after yesterday’s news.
Rocks was the first winner this eve, with Lucy Pardee scooping the award for Casting. The UK indie movie was nominated for a leading seven BAFTAs this year, joint most with Nomadland, which is a hot favorite for the Best Film prize tomorrow.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was the big winner on the opening night of the 2021 BAFTA Film Awards, taking home two golden masks from a possible two.
Night 1, hosted virtually by radio and TV presenter Clara Amfo, was a mostly craft-centered affair which also yielded wins for “Mank,” “Tenet” and “Sound of Metal.”
The first show was originally scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. local time, but according to sources the BBC made a late decision to push the broadcast by an hour. Amfo opened the show by reading a tribute to Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, who died Friday at the age of 99.
“On behalf of BAFTA, we are extremely saddened by the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, on Friday. The Duke was BAFTA’s very first president over 60 years ago and was the first of a line of royal patronage all...

Of all the Oscar nominees for costume design, Autumn de Wilde’s “Emma” served as the most colorful fashion statement. Indeed, the incisive Jane Austen adaptation, starring Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”) as the titular heroine, wields color as a blunt instrument of female empowerment. “It was such an organic, creative process, with a lot of serendipity,” said Alexandra Byrne (Oscar winner for “Elizabeth: The Golden Age”).
De Wilde brought out the best in Byrne by taking her out of her comfort zone and letting her play with an infusion of color like a box of macarons. “Emma” takes place at the dawn of the 19th century, when England underwent a radical shift in female fashion during the Regency period. Byrne took a deep dive into the liberating period, visiting museums to get a better understanding of the garments up close, before reproducing the right fabrics and figuring out the best color combinations.

Dazzling duds dominate the Oscar race for costume design this year.
Ann Roth landed her fifth nomination and potential second win for “Ma Rainey’s Black
Bottom”; the costume designing legend only had a few scarce pictures of the real-life Rainey to use as research but she managed to bring the Godmother of Blues to life.
As Rainey, Viola Davis rocked a show-stopping blue velvet dress over a rubber suit, which gave Davis a big- ger frame similar to the real Rainey. Chadwick Boseman’s dapper Levee also had to make a big impression, especially his shoes, as those items stand in for more than just nice footwear.
“Mank’s” Trish Summerville is a debutante at Oscar’s ball this year. Despite having worked in black and white before on projects — she dressed Justin Timberlake and Jay Z for the “Suit & Tie” music video — the David Fincher-helmed film marks...

Tues. April 6 L.A. County Public Health Issues Updates Guidelines for Filming
As Los Angeles County continues to see Covid-19 case rates, hospitalizations, and deaths continue to decline and the county enters the Orange Tier of the State’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy framework, new protocols have been issued to lift some local activity-specific restrictions.
With craft services and dining, indoor dining is now allowed at 50% capacity (maximum 200 people), but outdoor dining is still strongly recommended and single serving meals are still required. With sit-down meals, the guidelines suggest “Dining must occur only in designated dining areas. It is recommended to have cast and crew eating in shifts with fewer people. Seating for sit-down meals must be large enough to allow for physical distancing of at least six (6) feet between persons eating and should be done outdoors.
Live audiences indoors are limited to 50 people and they may not be members of the general public.

Double Oscar nominee Leslie Odom Jr. was among the craftsmen and craftswomen at Variety‘s Artisans Awards offering advice on how to get into the field they work in. Odom Jr. said, “Starting with the education is key, and starting in the theater is key for me.”
The “One Night in Miami” actor, songwriter and theater performer was honored at the seventh annual Variety Artisans Awards alongside co-writer Sam Ashworth for their original song contender “Speak Now.”
The tribute evening took place in a virtual ceremony on Monday that streamed on the Santa Barbara Film Festival website. Variety’s Senior Artisans Editor Jazz Tangcay moderated conversations with the Artisan Award recipients.
Sbiff Executive Director Roger Durling kicked off the evening by introducing the honorees. He said, “We celebrate this evening, below-the-line talent at the heart of filmmaking,” told viewers who watched the event from the festival’s online streaming platform.

Early on during the pandemic, it became obvious to Santa Barbara Intl. Film Festival executive director Roger Durling that the 36th edition of the festival would be like no other, and not in a good way. But he was hoping that by pushing the event back more than three months from mid-January to spring 2021, he’d be able to mount a hybrid event with some form of indoor screenings.
When that became unfeasible, he pivoted to a seated, socially distanced outdoor event at a Santa Barbara park. Build-out plans were drawn up and budgets were calculated. Then California experienced a dramatic surge in Covid-19 cases in November, and it became clear that the city would never approve their permit request.
“For 24 hours, I was pretty distraught,” recalls Durling. Then someone suggested turning the parking lots at Santa Barbara City College into a drive-in, “and all of a sudden it became super-exciting.

Of all the live-action movies nominated for Oscars on March 15, the one with the earliest release date was Autumn de Wilde’s “Emma.” The Jane Austen adaptation starring Anya Taylor Joy opened 13 months ago, in February 2020, before much of America and the world underwent Covid lockdown. But the vibrant film was cited with two nominations, for Best Makeup and Hairstyling and for Best Costume Design, the latter a sixth nod for Alexandra Byrne (who won in 2008 for “Elizabeth: The Golden Age”).
“My sixth, oh you make me feel very old,” Byrne said to TheWrap with a sharp laugh. “But that’s Ok. It is my sixth and I’m proud that they’ve all been very different. That’s the most exciting bit. That’s the thing I love most about it.”
As if to prove the point about her range, Byrne was reached on the phone at the end...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled its nominations Monday morning for the 93rd Oscars, through Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas. AMPAS’s David Rubin started the pandemic-delayed Oscars by validating Deadline’s scoop that most of the event will be held in Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, with some of the event being held in the Dolby Theatre, its usual locale.
The nominations for the Oscars, which will hold its ceremony April 25 live on ABC, had its share of surprises, and the most noticeable thing is the diversity that is reflected in the Academy’s efforts over several years to broaden the perspective of its voting members. Coming off the recent scandalous showing by the scandal-mocked HFPA for not even having a single voting Black member, it seems a step in the right direction.

The Academy Awards love period dramas and historical adaptations, at least in the Best Costume Design category. They love movies in which actors and actresses sport garments from the past so much that it's always unlikely that movies set in the present will be nominated, no matter how great the work is. Contemporary outfits? Not for us! Historically accurate costumes? Oscar worthy! Even in the realm of sci-fi they have an aversion to the contemporary (via the future), fantasy movies which are more likely to recall the past with their medieval vibes, are more likely.
That said, sometimes period costume design can be really stunning. Such is the case with the latest movie adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic Emma might gain. The first feature from director Autumn de Wilde is working against an early release, but 2020's lack of gorgeous actors dressed in lavish costumes might...

The smart, adamant and sometimes brutally honest forum posters did not mince words when it came to their reactions to the 2021 Critics Choice Awards film winners on Sunday night. The ceremony had many cheering but left just as many infuriated when it came to the night’s winners and losers on the film side of the 26th annual Critics Choice Awards. What were the upsets that left them with their jaws on the floor? Which winners were the most deserving? Which losses were posters not able to get over?

Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” swept the Latino Entertainment Film Awards on Sunday, taking home four awards, including best picture, director, cinematography and editing.
The awards, which are voted on and presented by the Latino Entertainment Journalists Association, also honored Oscar-nominated actor Rosie Perez with the Rita Moreno Lifetime Achievement Award and the Latino Activism Award. In a pre-taped speech, Perez thanked the Leja and spoke about her work as an activist.
“It’s weird getting an award for it to be quite honest – because I don’t do it for that. I do it just to help make the world a better place for everyone,” Perez said.
“The Prom” and “Hamilton” star Ariana DeBose was given the Latino Breakout Award. “I believe fervently in representation and I’m really proud to be even be a small part of the expansion of how we are viewed in this entertainment industry. We are a vast,...

Research may be the cornerstone of any historically accurate project, but it’s only when artisans know the rules that they can break them. The costume designers behind some of this year’s period films allowed their research to guide them in balancing context with storytelling.
Oscar-winning costume designer Alexandra Byrne immersed herself in the1800s setting of Focus Features’ “Emma” starring Anya Taylor-Joy. It was a time when ladies fashion magazines were just entering circulation; the fashion plates included in each issue were engraved and then hand-colored. As with fabric dye lots, each varied slightly depending on which artist completed the work.
Like those artists, the women of the villages would then reinterpret the designs based on their own sewing skills, finances and tastes. “Twenty women could look at the same fashion plate image and you’d get 20 interpretations,” says Byrne.
But it’s not enough to research magazines of the period,...

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pieces, including last year’s winner “Little Women.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Costume Design.)
By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 of the most recent 71 Best Picture champs also won this award. Among these was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004). Fantasy films such as this often boast Oscar-winning costumes, including 2019 winner “Black Panther,” and recent champs “Alice in Wonderland...

What will the costume design branch of the Academy favor this year? Will it be the lushness of period, or will voters favor something else, something contemporary? Or will they pick a winner who lands in the history books?
Whoever they choose, there are a plethora of eras to select from. David Fincher’s “Mank,” n will most likely nab a wealth of craft nominations and maybe even go home with Oscar in several categories.
Costume designer Trish Summerville is no stranger to Fincher’s world, having worked on “Gone Girl” and “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” Summerville brought the glitz and glamour of old Hollywood with gowns and suits to “Mank.” Her costumes on the grand black-and-white “Mank” have been garnering awards buzz since the first photos were released. And many consider her the front-runner in this category.
Besides, it’s well-known that Hollywood loves stories about Hollywood,...

Nominees for the 23rd annual Costume Designer Guild Awards (to be livestreamed April 13 on Twitter @CostumeAwards at 5:30 pm Pt / 8:30 pm Et) include Oscar frontrunner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and other period contenders “Emma,” “Mank,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” and “One Night in Miami.”
Contemporary nods went to “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),” “Da 5 Bloods,” “Promising Young Woman,” and “The Prom.” And the sci-fi/fantasy nominees included “Dolittle,” “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey,” “Mulan,” “Pinocchio,” and “Wonder Woman 1984.”
Netflix was the big winner with five nominations, followed by Warner Bros. and Universal/Focus Features with three. Disney scored with “Mulan,” Amazon with “One Night in Miami,” Lionsgate with “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” and Roadside Attractions with “Pinocchio.”
And it’s a great display of diversity with five Black-themed films.

Four of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the Oscars reaped bids on March 4 for the Costume Designers Guild Awards. “Emma,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Mank” contend here in the period picture category against “Judas and the Black Messiah” and “One Night in Miami.” Another likely Oscar contender, “Mulan,” vies here in the sci-fi/fantasy race against “Dolittle,” “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey,” “Pinocchio” and “Wonder Woman 1984.”
Our fifth Oscar nominee, “News of the World,” can take heart that the guild often overlook films that go on to contend at the Academy Awards. Indeed last year’s Oscar winner for Best Costume Design, “Little Women,” was snubbed by the CDG as were two of the other nominees, “The Irishman” and “Joker.” The guild honored one of the other academy nominees, “Jojo Rabbit.”
In its 22-year history, the CDG has previewed only 10 of the Oscar winners for Best Costume Design.

The Jane Austen adaptation “Emma.” was released before the outbreak of coronavirus in the U.S., but costume designer Alexandra Byrne’s is a near-certain lock for an Oscar nomination when the list is revealed March 15.
The prolific British designer, whose credits range from “Elizabeth” to “Guardians of the Galaxy,” was praised for the women’s wardrobe in “Emma.,” for the vivid pastels of the fabrics and the clothes that, as Byrne told TheWrap, “have the power of sugared macarons.”
But men’s fashion in “Emma.” was also a large part of Byrne’s job. The wardrobe and the dressing of male characters in the film is a serious undercurrent, though the absurdly high and starched collar of Vicar Elton (played by Josh O’Connor of “The Crown”) is also used for comic effect. The collar, Byrne explained to TheWrap, is historically accurate.
