Climate change is getting worse day after day, and every uncomfortable conversation we’ve been putting off for decides is waiting for us just over the horizon. Caitlin Cronenberg’s debut feature Humane dives headfirst into that messy, chaotic crisis we’ve built for ourselves, in a chamber piece that has one affluent family forced to make the ultimate decision. It’s a classic thriller set-up with a premise ripped from the headlines of tomorrow’s newspaper, and a great cast of character actors ready to rip each other apart as soon as shit hits the fan.
The world of Humane is not unlike our own. With dwindling resources and increasingly inhabitable conditions, it’s like looking 5 minutes into the future. A future where fresh vegetable and meats are prohibited, and standing for any length of time in direct sunlight with no protection is practically a death sentence. But in...

There’s a nice trio of specialty films to highlight this weekend from Joanna Arnow, Uberto Pasolini and Caitlin Cronenberg’s feature directorial debut.
Joanna Arnow’s micro-budget comedy The Feeling That The Time For Doing Something Has Passed world premiered in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. It follows a thirtysomething New York woman as time passes in her long-term casual Bdsm relationship, low-level corporate job, and quarrelsome Jewish family. Arnow writes, directs and stars. And that’s Bdsm, as in bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism.
The helmer is thrilled to see her feature (after 2017’s i hate myself :), and a handful of well-received shorts) launch a theatrical run, with Magnolia distributing. “That’s how I dream of my movies being seen,” Arnow tells Deadline. “It’s also so important to see comedies (on the big screen) Shared laughter with strangers is quite beautiful and healing in a way.

For the longest time, Caitlin Cronenberg wanted no part of the director’s chair. As a highly successful photographer who’s shot everyone and everything — including the much-publicized cover art for Drake’s fourth studio album, Views — she had no interest in following in the footsteps of her father, David Cronenberg, and older brother, Brandon Cronenberg. But everything started to change when Schitt’s Creek star Annie Murphy gave Caitlin a call about a low-pressure directing job that would ultimately whet her appetite en route to her feature directorial debut, Humane.
“It was very much thrust upon me by my friend Annie Murphy from Schitt’s Creek. She was doing a web series [The Plateaus] and needed a fake music video … and over the course of that process, I realized that directing felt very natural to me,” Cronenberg tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And when I did a short film called The Endings...

Two years after it premiered, one of our favorite shows of 2022, “The Outer Range” returns this summer (read our review). Something of an unusual but welcome mix of “Yellowstone” family drama and existential “X-Files” sci-fi, “Outer Range” star Josh Brolin as a rancher in Wyoming fighting for his land and his family, who discovers something unfathomable on its outskirts. Brolin also makes his directorial debut with season two’s penultimate episode
The mindbending series also features an outstanding cast including Imogen Poots (“Baltimore”), Lili Taylor (“Manhunt”), Tamara Podemski (“Reservation Dogs”), Lewis Pullman (“Top Gun: Maverick”), Tom Pelphrey (“Ozark”), Noah Reid (“Schitt’s Creek”), Shaun Sipos (“Reacher”), Isabel Arraiza (“The Little Things”), Olive Abercrombie (“The Haunting of Hill House”), and Will Patton (“Horizon: An American Saga”), among others.

Roadside Attractions has snagged U.S. rights to the comedy Summer Camp, starring Diane Keaton (Annie Hall), Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell) and Alfre Woodard (12 Years a Slave), on which we were first to report. Written and directed by Castille Landon (Perfect Addiction), the film is slated for release in theaters on May 31.
Summer Camp tells the story of Nora (Keaton), Ginny (Bates), and Mary (Woodard), who have been best friends since being inseparable at summer camp. As the years have passed, they’ve seen each other less and less, so when the chance to reunite for a summer camp reunion arises, they all take it, some begrudgingly and others excitedly. Each of their lives might not be where they’d imagined, but one thing is for sure — Nora, Ginny, and Mary need each other, and summer camp reminds them why.

A Stephen King horror story about a malevolent (sort of) doll almost sounds like something that could've been written specifically for James Wan to turn into a movie. But while the filmmaker behind "Saw," "Insidious," "The Conjuring," and "Malignant" is indeed involved in adapting "The Monkey" -- a short story King wrote for Gallery magazine in 1980 before later including it in his 1985 collection "Skeleton Crew" -- for the screen, he's only lending his services as a producer.
Instead, "The Monkey" is being written and directed by Osgood "Oz" Perkins, son of "Psycho" actor Anthony Perkins and the mind behind such creepily atmospheric and inventively stylized horror pictures as "The Blackcoat's Daughter," "I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House," and "Gretel & Hansel". Osgood Perkins is also currently riding high thanks to the buzz around "Longlegs," his upcoming occult serial killer horror-thriller that boasts one of the most intriguing trailers in recent memory.

Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted – The Pop Tart Story looks like it might be something interesting. The movie revolving around how Kellogg’s and Post came up with an idea that would go on to change the world seems to be heading in the right direction. But it was not at all an easy run for some cast members. Especially Jerry Seinfeld. The Seinfeld star had a nice experience on set except for his interaction with one star – Hugh Grant. He couldn’t help but lament what a pain it was in the end.

Before Robert Pattinson’s The Batman introduced Colin Farrell as the Penguin, DC fans got a much more terrifying take on the character by Danny DeVito. He is the exact reason why Pattinson finds Tim Burton’s 1992 film, Batman Returns, as one of the most disturbing things even now. Michael Keaton’s second Batman film was also one to take a dark turn as a DC superhero movie.
Robert Pattinson in and as The Batman
Pattinson followed in the footsteps of George Clooney, Christian Bale, and Ben Affleck to play the latest iteration of Batman. James Gunn’s Dcu is set to introduce another Batman, a casting that has yet to be announced.

It’s only one minute long, but at least Warner Bros Pictures’ first Beetlejuice Beetlejuice teaser trailer shows the reunion of Michael Keaton’s Beetlejuice and Winona Ryder’s Lydia Deetz. That’s all anyone can ask for in a teaser for a film that’s been three decades in the making.
Two-time Emmy winner Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek) reprises her role as Delia Deetz, alongside Beetlejuice newcomers Jenna Ortega (Wednesday) as Lydia’s daughter, Astrid, and Justin Theroux (Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi) as Rory. The sequel’s cast also includes Monica Bellucci (Spectre), Arthur Conti (House of the Dragon), and Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe (Poor Things).

Will “The Bear” rule the Emmys even harder the second time around? What will succeed “Succession”? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here with their first Emmy predictions of the season.
It feels like the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards were just yesterday — and that’s because they basically were. The delayed ceremony took place in January and “The Bear” dominated with six awards, including Best Comedy Series, for a total of 10 wins for its debut season. And for Season 2, it will have a shot at pulling a “Schitt’s Creek” by claiming all seven comedy categories at the main ceremony as reigning supporting actress champ Ayo Edebiri has moved to lead. But can she hold off the last two Best Comedy Actress champs, Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) and Jean Smart (“Hacks”)? Smart is undefeated for the Max series, which returns with its third season on May...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, in our Season 4 premiere, we survey the comedy field.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s time for the premiere edition of Emmy Experts Typing. For Season 4 of our weekly conversation series, the stakes have never been higher and the guest stars are bigger than ever? Ok, not really — at least in the drama categories, hey-o! But we’ll spend the next several months cycling through the top races in comedy, drama and limited series, starting today with the shows that prove music laughter is the best medicine. Or, well, maybe not since “The Bear” is the runaway favorite already here and very well could repeat its 2023 (2024) Emmy wins in 2024 (2024). We’ve all been there: You’re ready to call it a night and be alone, but a guest can’t seem to take the hint that you’d like them to get going. Over the years, many television shows have featured a houseguest who, for one reason or another, just won’t leave. Coined “The Thing That Wouldn’t Leave” on Saturday Night Live in the 1970s, the trope can commonly be spotted in sitcoms like Friends, Schitt’s Creek, and Yes, Dear. The guest often remains oblivious until the host finally snaps — like when Arthur’s D.W. famously quips, “Can I ask you a question? Why don’t you go back to your own house and stop bothering us?!” Usually the guest is grating, but harmless, and the whole thing is played for a laugh.

The sitcom “Girls5eva” follows the attempted comeback of a fictional girl group that peaked in the early 2000s, now reunited as middle-aged women. But headed into its third season, it’s “Girls5eva,” not just Girls5eva, that’s trying to start anew. After two critically acclaimed, if evidently little-watched, seasons on Peacock, the show has been resurrected by Netflix, which has bankrolled a fresh batch of episodes and made the entire back catalog available to its massive audience of over 260 million global subscribers — many of whom will encounter “Girls5eva” for the first time as a Netflix original.

To date, only three programs throughout television history have swept the top seven Primetime Emmys categories for series, lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, writing and directing. The lucky three are: miniseries “Angels in America” (2004), comedy series “Schitt’s Creek” (2020) and drama series “The Crown” (2021). At the upcoming 2024 Emmys, “The Bear” is hoping to join this esteemed list — and it’s all thanks to a savvy category switcheroo from one of its fan-fave stars.
Recently the FX dramedy about a Chicago beef restaurant claimed six of the top seven Primetime Emmys for its first season: comedy series, lead actor Jeremy Allen White as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, supporting actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach as restaurant manager Richard “Richie” Jerimovich, supporting actress Ayo Edebiri as sous-chef Sydney Adamu, and both writing and directing for Christopher Storer. “The Bear” was not eligible in the lead actress category, so it couldn’t win there and complete the sweep.

Hollywood, California – March 08: Eugene Levy is honored with Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame timed to the global premiere of Apple TV+’s “The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy” on March 08, 2024 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Eric Charbonneau/Getty Images for Apple TV+) Considering it took him until he was 30 years old to get his first TV role, as a regular player on the sketch show Sctv, Eugene Levy seemed like he would be an unlikely candidate for a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. Yet, sure enough, at the age of 77, he’s achieved that honor after achieving both fame and acclaim in the American Pie movies, Christopher Guest’s series of mockumentary films, and, of course, the Emmy Award-winning comedy Schitt’s Creek Currently starring in his own reality series, The Reluctant Traveler, Levy talked about what it means for him to be honored with his Walk of Fame star.

The duo are also part of the cast of Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice 2,” and Keaton was raving about the sequel when he spoke with SiriusXM’s “The Jess Cagle Show” this week.
