Máiréad Tyers’ first on-screen role straight out of drama school was in Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast.” “You don’t really see me in the film at all,” she says. “[But] I’m so proud of it.” A year later, she wrapped her first leading role in U.K. Disney+ original comedy “Extraordinary.” In the show — basically a flatshare sitcom with a twist — Tyers plays 20-something Jen, who is messy, funny and the only person in the world without a superpower.
But Jen can also be selfish and occasionally obnoxious – mostly to her flatmates Carrie (Sofia Oxenham), Kash (Bilal Hasna) and, erm, Jizzlord (Luke Rollason) — and Tyers’ superpower is making her not just relatable, but likeable. So much so that the show, which was created and written by newcomer Emma Moran, has been renewed for a second season, which drops today on Disney+ and on Hulu in the U.S.

Numbers have begun rolling in for this mid-summer weekend and as expected Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is looking to drop the 60% we predicted on Thursday. If that number holds it would be about a 5% steeper decline than 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which may not sound like much until you consider that Skull opened with over $100 million (or $126.9 million when you account for its 4-day Memorial Day gross.) So when Crystal Skull dropped to number 2 in its second week to the ladies of Sex and the City, it was still able to manage over $44 million, Dial of Destiny will be lucky to see $28 million in its second week.
If there is a glimmer of hope for Indy to maintain its pole position it is that horror films tend to be very front loaded and because of that, Insidious: The Red Door may win the Friday box...

Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
Sharon Horgan has seen success in her day. After cracking through in 2006 with the cult favorite and two-time BAFTA nominee “Pulling,” the England-born, Ireland-raised writer and actor co-created a sharp-tongued and moving modern rom-com in “Catastrophe,” the Prime Video and Channel 4 original that landed Horgan her first Emmy nomination. Since then, she’s created a three-season series for HBO (“Divorce”), earned two additional BAFTA nods (for “Motherland”), and launched a production company, Merman, with offices in New York, Los Angeles, and London.
Now she leads “Bad Sisters,” a black-comic thriller for Apple TV+ about five siblings who swore to protect each other after their parents’ untimely death — and how that promise gets tested when they decide...

One of Sharon Horgan’s goals in an already illustrious career as a showrunner and actor (including beloved British series such as “Pulling” and “Catastrophe”) was to create more varied, interesting roles for women. AppleTV+’s “Bad Sisters” allowed her the chance to do it five times over, in a twisty, addictive yarn about siblings who band together in the aftermath of a creep husband’s mysterious demise. (He’s not called “The Prick” in the show for nothing.)

First, congratulations on making probably the funniest drama series of all time. The narrative genre lines really do seem to be blurring on TV, don’t they?

In her Apple TV+ series Bad Sisters, which just won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Drama, Sharon Horgan examines the lengths that five sisters are willing to go to in order to protect each other. Much like her previous series Catastrophe, which earned her a comedy writing Emmy nomination, and Pulling, Horgan also stars in Bad Sisters.
Inspired by the Belgian series The Clan, the story begins with a funeral. When the abusive husband of one of the Garvey sisters, Grace, dies, it is presumed a suicide until his life insurers launch an investigation to prove ill intent. Naturally, they suspect the sisters,...

Ricky Gervais and Sharon Horgan’s agent has said creatives should “be careful what they wish for” when considering whether to launch production companies.
United Agents vet Duncan Hayes told a BBC Comedy Festival audience that his constant challenge is “steering” creatives towards writing and directing over getting too involved with their businesses, which can be incredibly time costly.
Gervais runs Derek Productions and Horgan is the co-founder of Merman TV, and both have devoted much of their time to building up their indies over the past few years.
“Sometimes Sharon has a lot of plates to spin,” said Hayes. “She is running a successful indie and has lots of scripts to write. It can feel a bit ‘be careful what you wish for’ when you have the weight of your own production company.”

Prime Video has acquired the rights to “Wild Isles,” the nature documentary series narrated by David Attenborough, through a deal with distributor Banijay Rights, Amazon announced on Thursday. All five episodes will be available Friday, April 21, a day before Earth Day on April 22.
The docuseries caused a stir in the U.K. when a reputed sixth episode was not shown. The Guardian reported in March that it was withdrawn to avoid upsetting conservative politicians and press, who objected to the project being funded by the World Wildlife Fund.
BBC, however, denied the existence of the additional installment: “This is totally inaccurate, there is no ‘sixth episode.’ ‘Wild Isles’ is — and always was — a five part series and does not shy away from environmental content. We have acquired a separate film for iPlayer from the Rspb and WWF and Silverback Films about people working to preserve and restore the biodiversity of the British Isles.

Amid a mass exodus of longtime “SNL” cast members over the summer, one of the most unexpected was Melissa Villaseñor, the show’s ace celebrity impersonator and one of the most reliable laugh-getters during her 2016-2022 tenure.
Aside from the announcement of her departure, no further details were provided, leaving fans to wonder why she bolted. But in a new interview with The Daily Beast’s “Last Laugh” podcast, Villaseñor revealed that her exit was amicable and was her choice — she had started suffering panic attacks due to stress and stepped away to focus on “my mental health.”
“Yeah, it was my decision. I gave myself a lot of time in the summer to think on it and kind of play out in my head if I go back,” Villaseñor told The Daily Beast. “At the end of the day it was about my mental health. Last season, I had a couple of panic attacks.

Here’s a plot description from IMDb: “After the death of their father, three estranged sisters come together to steal back a priceless family heirloom, discovering each other (and lock-picking) in the process.” The show is largely based on Clan, a Flemish series created by Malin-Sarah Gozin, and will be set in London and Dublin. The past year and a half has been hard on ever couple, but it was especially hard on the husband and wife in Stephen Daldry’s BBC drama film “Together.” Shot in just 10 days during lockdown this past spring, the film stars UK favorites James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan as a married couple in crisis, and stuck in their apartment. After premiering earlier this year overseas, the film finally gets a stateside theatrical release from Bleecker Street Films on August 27. Check out the trailer below.
Written by celebrated British screen scribe and playwright Dennis Kelly, the film “is the story of a family, like so many, who found a way to survive — together. This hilarious and heartbreaking story intimately shows two partners forced to re-evaluate themselves and their relationship through the reality of lockdown,” according to the official synopsis.

Though historical drama fans in the United States might have to wait a bit, their UK counterparts will be excited for the next big period drama to take over their TV. The romantic comedy of the year is a half-hour sitcom that debuted in England in January and is now streaming on Amazon Prime: Catastrophe. You’ll smile whenever you say the title; the show’s first season, a brisk six episodes, leaves you no other option, because it’s so damn likable. Created by and starring Sharon Horgan (Pulling) and comedian Rob Delaney, it’s about an American businessman named Rob (of course) and an Irish schoolteacher named Sharon (why not?) who conceive a baby during a weeklong affair in London, then decide to stay together and raise it. The series has all the basic elements you want from a romantic comedy: yearning, heat, kindness, selfishness, impulsive stupidity, grand gestures, sharp dialogue, and an endless series of obstacles for the lovers to navigate — some occurring naturally, others placed there by their own ignorance, stubbornness, or inability to see what’s in front of them.

Right around this time last year, I put out my plea to the universe: Send me TV rom-coms, I begged. And it seems that my prayers have been answered and then some. Amazon's new six-episode series Catastrophe is a powerfully charming rom-com in all the best ways (including being British). It's also an example of how little premise good comedy actually needs: Specificity, yes; joy, yes; charisma and wit and smarts, yes. He's Rob, she's Sharon. And that's kind of it. Go.Rob here is comedian and author Rob Delaney, and Sharon is comedian and actress Sharon Horgan (you might recognize her from Pulling, which she also created). The two are the stars and creators of this series; he plays an American adman, she an Irish schoolteacher living in London. What starts as a one-night stand turns into a week-long fling — turns into something more when she discovers she's pregnant.

Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney's new Channel 4 sitcom Catastrophe is a deeply funny, down-to-earth look at relationships...
Sick of honey-sweet TV portrayals of relationships and hackneyed sitcom clichés about the drudgery of marriage, Sharon Horan (Pulling, Dead Boss, Free Agents) and stand-up Rob Delaney (Burning Love, Larry King, basically the king of Twitter) wrote and star in Catastrophe. It’s a deeply funny, down-to-earth story of two people whose strings-free hook-up is fast-tracked due to an unplanned pregnancy, and their attempts to stay their accelerated course.

It’s official: Dennis Kelly’s innovative, stylish drama series Utopia will not be back for a third series on Channel 4…
Sad news, this. After two exhilarating, bold, and eerily beautiful series, it's been confirmed that Channel 4’s Utopia will not be returning for a third run.
Utopia, from writer Dennis Kelly (Pulling, Matilda: The Musical), who had plans for a third and possibly fourth series of the drama, concluded its second series earlier this year.
The second run was another twisted tale of global conspiracy and dysfunctional family love that opened with an audacious flashback episode directed by Marc Munden that’s sure to top more than a few 'TV episodes of the year' lists come December.
Quality and audacity don’t often go hand in hand with massive ratings, sadly, and with a slate of new dramas arriving on Channel 4 in the coming year (including much-anticipated sci-fi Humans,...

Here's the first trailer for Utopia's highly promising second series, coming to Channel 4 in July...
Trailer
A brand new series of the darkly comic conspiracy thriller Utopia is coming to Channel Four this July, written by Dennis Kelly (Pulling, Matilda: The Musical) and lead-directed by visionary Marc Munden (The Devil's Whore, The Crimson Petal And The White).
Utopia series two reunites what's left of the gang to tackle the big, unanswerable questions of the first, with just as much style, just as many surprises and grimly comic moments, and - judging by episodes one and two - even more bloodshed. For fans of the first run, it's simply not to be missed.

After lengthy negotiations, Fox has given a six-episode order to single-camera comedy Weird Loners, from writer Michael Weithorn, who wrote the project on spec and sold it to Fox. It was then laid off at 20th TV, with studio-based director-producer Jake Kasdan coming on board to executive produce alongside Weithorn. Weird Loners is the story of four relationship-phobic people who are unexpectedly thrust into one another’s lives and form an unlikely bond in a townhouse in Queens, NY. Additionally, Fox has given pilot orders to comedies Dead Boss and Sober Companion, both geared toward series. Single-camera Dead Boss, which had a put pilot commitment, hails from Warner Bros TV and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. An adaptation of the BBC3 series created by Sharon Horgan and Holly Walsh and starring Horgan, Dead Boss was written by Patricia Breen (Suburgatory). Fox is to shoot a Us remake of BBC Three comedy Dead Boss.
The UK original starred Sharon Horgan and aired six episodes in June and July 2012.
Fox's version - which again follows a woman falsely convicted and imprisoned for killing her boss - will be written by Suburgatory's Patricia Breen, Deadline reports.
Horgan will executive produce the Us version alongside Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment.
Horgan and Kaplan previously developed a Us remake of the former's other BBC Three comedy Pulling and also worked on two original comedy projects - Bad Mom and Bad Management.
Fox has given Dead Boss a put-pilot commitment, meaning that the network will have to pay a fee if it does not air the episode - increasing the likelihood of a series pick-up.

The BBC is having its own celebrations, but what are fans doing to celebrate 50 years of Doctor Who?
Plenty of posh things are going on this year to mark Doctor Who’s 50th year, some, like the BFI season, Mark Gatiss docudrama, and of course the anniversary special are already in full swing, while others are being kept under wraps until closer to November the 23rd.
The glossy, official celebrations are one thing of course, and they’ll receive publicity aplenty. Alongside those, we want to highlight the smaller stuff, to support the publications, plans, and events being organised here in the UK and abroad by Doctor Who fans. To this end, here’s the first of our soon-to-be regular Doctor Who 50th anniversary local round-ups…

In less than a week, the broadcast networks will start announcing their lineups for the 2013-14 season, and all of them will tout rosters of new shows that are all high-testing, broad-based, sure-fire hits.
That, of course, won't end up being the case. The past few years, only about a third of the new shows the broadcast nets have rolled out made it to a second season. Which means, every year, ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and The CW are looking to fill some sort of need in their schedules.
That's where Zap2it comes in. As we do every year at this time, we're going to propose some network schedules for next season and assess what each network needs for the coming season.
Pics: 22 pilots we hope become series
So if we were running ABC, its fall lineup might look like this (new shows in italics, all times Et/Pt). The whys follow the schedule.

Kristen Schaal has joined the Us remake of BBC comedy Pulling.
The Flight of the Conchords star will play man-hungry Louise in ABC's pilot, Deadline reports.
Schaal replaces Mandy Moore, who was originally cast in the role but departed the project after the Louise character 'moved in a different direction'.
The original Pulling - which aired on BBC Three in the UK between 2003 and 2009 - was co-created by and starred Irish actress Sharon Horgan.
Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (NBC's The Office) have penned the Us adaptation, which will also star Jenny Slate (Saturday Night Live).
Latest cast addition Schaal is an actress and comedian - she currently plays a regular voice role on Fox animated comedy Bob's Burgers and also recurred on NBC's 30 Rock.

When Mandy Moore decided to leave ABC's comedy pilot "Pulling" last week, she said the character she was to play was being taken in a different direction. Writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky confirmed that was the case, and her departure apparently occurred with no hard feelings.
Judging by who is replacing Moore on the show, it seems clear the "different direction" talk wasn't just cover. Kristen Schaal, a master at playing off-center characters, is taking over the role of Louise from Moore, Deadline reports.
Schaal joins June Diane Raphael and Jenny Slate in the show about three women who are still figuring out their lives. "Pulling" is an adaptation of Sharon Horgan's acclaimed BBC series; Horgan is an executive producer of the new version alongside Eisenberg and Stupnitsky ("The Office," "Bad Teacher").
Schaal's credits include "The Daily Show," "Flight of the Conchords" and "30 Rock" along with a ton of voiceover work.

The project, written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky based on the British series and directed by Jason Moore, revolves around three dysfunctional women in their 30s — Donna (Raphael), Karen (Slate) and Louise (Schaal) — living their lives the way they want, even if society tells them they should have it all figured out by this point. "Roswell" and "State of Georgia" actress Majandra Delfino has left ABC comedy pilot "Keep Calm and Karey On." The pilot, led by Kelly Preston, is about a woman (Preston) who is the only decent person in her family full of petty thieves, drug addicts, and narcissists. Delfino was set to play her troubled sister, Penny.
Delfino was cast before Preston, who is older than originally envisioned for the character of Karey. As Preston is nearly 20 years older than Delfino, the addition of Preston to the cast complicated Delfino's role.
ABC has let several actresses go from their comedy pilots this season. Mandy Moore asked to be released from "Pulling" after cast additions changed the dynamic of the show, and Mercedes Masohn left "Mixology" for similar reasons.
Delfino's exit was first reported by Deadline.

Mandy Moore has pulled out of "Pulling."
TV Guide reports that the pop star turned singer has exited the ABC comedy pilot from "Bad Teacher" producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. Moore had signed on to play Louise, a woman desperate to walk down the aisle, in "Pulling," which follows three dysfunctional women in their 30s.
Moore was the first actress to sign on to the pilot, but the project wasn't working out the way it was originally presented to her. "Mandy is a pro, and has been very patient and accommodating with us," "Pulling" producers told TV Guide. "As we moved closer to production, it was clear we needed to go in a different direction for the character."
"Many things change quickly as a pilot moves into production," Moore told the site. "Lee and Gene moved the character in a different direction, it was clear this wasn't right for me.
