The Performer | Jane Krakowski
The Show | BoJack Horseman
The Episode | “The Old Sugarman Place” (Sept. 8, 2017)
The Performance | We don’t often honor animated shows in this space… much less melancholy animated sitcoms about a chronically depressed horse. But dammit, we had to this week, because Krakowski’s hilarious, heartbreaking Season 4 guest spot as BoJack’s grandmother Honey was just that good.
We met Honey in flashbacks, as BoJack retreated from the world in his family’s old Michigan lake house. At first, it seemed like Krakowski would just be in comedy mode as Honey rattled off 1940s slang while fawning...

warning: spoilers!
I feel like we have finally met Peter Capaldi’s Doctor for the first time. At last.
This was an incredible episode. Okay, the last 15 minutes were incredible. It was a bit of filler getting to that point, but even the filler had some good stuff: Osgood getting to hang out with and help the Doctor, almost like a companion; the sad Zygon so terrified it commits suicide, surprisingly poignant; Jenna Coleman showing off how good an actor she actually is with hard, callous Zygon Bonnie, who looks so very unlike Clara, for all that the Doctor can say that he “knows that face.” All so much better — smarter, more emotional, more cohesive as a story — than almost anything we’ve seen out of Doctor Who in years.
And then we get to this:

The Zygons return! Here's our spoiler-filled review of The Zygon Invasion...
This review contains spoilers. Our spoiler-free review is here.
9.7 The Zygon Invasion
“Did you just call yourself Doctor Disco?”
[Review has been updated to correct two factual errors. Apologies!]
It’s a while since a Doctor Who story needed to start with a bit of an exposition dump, but The Zygon Invasion is as dense an opening chapter of an adventure as we’ve seen in some time.
As the prologue demonstrates, this is a story that picks up from crumbs left behind in the wonderful Day Of The Doctor. And then it jumps, still pre-credits, to explain why Ingrid Oliver’s Osgood is still alive.
After all, we saw her brutally slain by Missy at the end of series 8, and yet it’s been known for some time that Oliver would be back. It is, of course, the ecosystem modern television exists in, whereby secrets...

Unit, shape-shifters and the Doctor cosplay. Here are the geeky bits and pieces we spotted in Doctor Who's The Zygon Invasion...
For at least the third time this series, one or all of the characters you care about on this show are dead. So what better way to celebrate than to read through our weekly list of callbacks, allusions, shared themes and generally interesting (if tenuous) nonsense? As ever, feel free to leave your own contributions in the comments below!
The Old-Who Invasion
This is the third appearance of the Zygons in Doctor Who; they first menaced the fourth Doctor in 1975’s Terror Of The Zygons, a story which revealed the Loch Ness Monster to be one of the Skarasen, a race from the Zygon homeworld. Unit also featured in that tale, with Kate’s father Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart revealing his Scots heritage in a fetching kilt.

The wrestling business is full of a lot of colorful characters. Some of them are legendary great performers like The Undertaker or Goldust. The ideas of those characters my Then there are the crappy characters that make us wonder what WWE’s creative force were thinking.
With April Fool’s taking place just a day ago, it’s a good time to look at some of the more foolish ideas for characters in WWE and WCW history with a focus on where they were billed from. A lot of times you’ll see a wrestler billed from their actual hometown or a made up one like how Cactus Jack was from Truth or Consequences, New Mexico (that’s a real place) even though he’s from New York or The Undertaker was from Death Valley even though he’s really from Texas. If it fit the character it was fine.

When it comes to pro wrestling knowledge and trivia, one thing that is an underrated topic of discussion is where wrestlers are from. When it comes to the best of the best, you can usually remember where they’re billed from. The Undertaker? Death Valley. Hulk Hogan? Venice Beach, California (or Hollywood, California during his years as Hollywood Hogan). Cactus Jack? Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico. John Cena? West Newbury, Massachusetts. Ric Flair? Charlotte, North Carolina. You just know these things from their entrances through the years.
Far more often than not, though, those hometowns are merely part of the character, and aren’t really where these people are from. Sure, there are plenty of wrestlers who were billed from their actual hometowns or current home cities, but that certainly doesn’t happen all the time.
If you want to kick things up a notch, you have to...

Road sign theft. Troublemaking tourists. Exclamations of “where?!” as the default response upon being asked from whence you hail; just a few of the galling things those from unfortunately named places have to put up with.
In fact, Britain alone has a wealth of towns, villages and hamlets whose names were probably perfectly innocent once – before these old English words gained their inappropriate connotations. Nestled in our famous countryside, one can expect to see idyllic rural areas with names such as Fingringhoe, Nob End, Twatt, Scratchy Bottom, Shitterton… the list seriously goes on and on.
How very quaint! Still though, we’ve got absolutely nothing on the merry old land of Dildo, Newfoundland or the quiet residential village of F**king, Austria. Staples of the world’s most inappropriate geographic labels, the latter especially is famed for its attraction of troublemaking tourists as much as its naughty name.

The iconic game show host turns 90 on Thursday, Dec. 12, the day he'll be seen again on the CBS game show "The Price Is Right." Barker's reappearance will be a highlight of a full week of celebrating him on the program, with current host Drew Carey also presenting a daily segment on a concern long advocated by animal rights activist Barker: pet adoption.
"It went very well," the ever-genial Barker tells Zap2it of his birthday show, which was taped last month. "It was heartwarming to even be there. The people were so nice, from [executive producer] Mike Richards right on down ... and certainly including Drew. He has always, always been very nice.

After 10 seasons of "NCIS" and 8 seasons of Ziva David (Cote de Pablo), it's high time someone devoted a marathon session of the procedural to the tough former-Mossad agent. She's not going to be on the show much longer, after all!
That's just what the USA Network is doing on Saturday (Sept. 7). 11 episodes focusing on the NCIS special agent will air in a row starting at 1 p.m. Et, continuing through 12 midnight. Episodes like "Kill Ari" parts 1 and 2, "Shalom," "Aliyah," "Truth or Consequences" and "Good Cop, Bad Cop" will air during this time.
Because TV is officially interactive these days, fans are also invited to post comments about Ziva throughout the afternoon. A collection of tweets with the hashtag "#USALovesZiva" will be broadcast between 6 and 10 p.m.
If this is still not enough interaction for you, there will be live tweeting as well. "NCIS" super-fan @ncisfanatic will keep active on Twitter throughout the marathon.

There are several entertainment journalists packed into a nine-seat helicopter taking off from a tiny airport in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico and none of us can stop humming the Jurassic Park theme. We'll be in the air for about 20 minutes, traveling across a desert so empty that it's hard to tell exactly how far we are from the ground. We're going to a spaceport. Truth Or Consequences, N.M. — Will Smith has a new outlook on teenagers: Parents do indeed understand.
The rapper-turned-actor says he's "grown a lot" since writing the Grammy-winning 1988 hit that humorously declared they didn't.
All three of his children now at least dabble in music and acting, most notably 14-year-old Jaden, who stars with his father in the new sci-fi film "After Earth," opening Friday. Even in the midst of a globe-hopping promotional tour for the movie, Smith recognizes the downside to making stardom a family affair.
"I think that the major risk of this particular business is strictly emotional," he said in a recent interview. "The business has almost a narcotic quality. So it's almost as if you're introducing a narcotic into your kid's life.
"So for (wife) Jada (Pinkett Smith) and I, the most important thing is that they have to stay focused and grounded on the fact that they are giving.

In the New Mexican desert, not far from the town of Truth or Consequences, Virgin Galactic is building the future. Last week, ComingSoon.net had the privilege of helicoptering in to Spaceport America, the world's first spaceport built specifically for commercial travel, to speak with Will and Jaden Smith about their new science fiction adventure After Earth . Set in a universe where Earth itself has effectively "evicted" humanity with catastrophic climate change, After Earth picks up 1,000 years into humanity's future. There, the elder Smith plays Kitai Raige, a legendary member of a Ranger Corps dedicated to intergalactic peace. Said to be able to overcome fear itself, Cypher is father to Jaden's Kitai Raige, a young man desperate to live up to his father's legacy....

In life, sometimes when you chase a dream you have to take a leap of faith. This jump is not without its consequences, gaining you many bruises and scars along the way. But if you put passion and love in everything you do you could transcend anything you thought possible and make an impact in the world. These words personify one of the most iconic wrestlers in the modern era. A guy that is the best-selling author, philanthropist, comedian, world champion and sock puppet aficionado Mick Foley. In the latest WWE DVD release, entitled “For All Mankind: the Life and Career of Mick Foley” they attempt to get a more in-depth look at the man behind the madness. Personally I think it’s much like the subject it follows it’s pretty good.

Scandal dropped bombs and shocked my face off tonight. My eyes are still wide open and, as is often the case with this show, I'm having trouble forming a complete sentence because so many sentences are flying into my head at once.
Total. Game Changer.
On "Nobody Likes Babies," some alliances were tested and renewed while others were broken, perhaps for good.
"Nobody Likes Babies" picked up right where "Truth or Consequences" left off: in the elevator.
Just as the doors began to close, Huck squeaked in with Charlie and Hollis and saved Hollis' life. If, that is, Hollis agrees not to take the deal being offered to him by David Rosen. As long as he doesn't take the deal and rat out the others involved in election rigging, Huck will protect him. If, however, he decides to talk, Huck won't get in Charlie's way.
Hollis is now one of the safest men alive,...

Scandal never fails to disappoint upon returning from a break. Never. In fact, I think this show is incapable of disappointing at all right now. Scandal is on fire!
As the once-divergent story lines came crashing together around Olivia Pope, "Truth or Consequences" was a game-changer.
I've said it all along, and tonight I was proven correct: Hollis was not behind the assassination attempt.
Truthfully, having him be the culprit was too easy. Setting him up to make it look like he was behind it all, however, was brilliant. I have my theories about who set him up, but I'll probably be proven wrong somehow by some crazy loop Shonda will find a way to throw at us. That's okay, though. I can handle the ride on that roller coaster.
Now that we've gotten that major bit out of the way, let's talk about Olivia.

"Truth or Consequences" is one of those episodes that's sets up for something bigger, presumably for next week. It gives more back stories, fills in more holes in story lines and pushes the plot along but with no reward in the end. Except for the one little bombshell that Scandal loves to pull on us -- what you believed all along isn't the case at all.

A conspiracy, a presidential shooting, an election-rigging, and illicit affairs – you name it and Scandal’s got it. Scandal has become the “water cooler” show of the season and nobody can predict what crazy thing is going to happen next. Fortunately, during the recent TCA set visit, cast of Scandal took a few minutes to share a few teasers about what Fitz, Mellie, Cyrus and David and what may lie ahead in their collective futures.

In this last episode, we saw Fitz trying to prove that his mental faculties were intact, and then when asked by Millie about the one thing he wants, he asked for a divorce. He’s probably not going to get that, but what else would he really want at this point? Now that he’s had this “wake-up call” in his life.

David Rosen in the good guy? Olivia and company are the bad guys?
What the heck is going on in Scandal Season 2?!?
In a newly-released sneak peek from tomorrow night's "Truth or Consequences," Olivia accepts her role in the election-rigging, opening up to Cyrus in a way he most definitely does not want to hear. What happens when the fixer herself needs some fixing?
Watch this clip now and then tune in tomorrow evening for the answer:

Scandal is easily one of the best shows of the year and things are not slowing down in the least.
In this new promo for an upcoming episode, Fitz tells Olivia about his pending divorce, she tells him about Edison's proposal, and shit hits the fan where that whole election rigging is concerned. It's getting good, you guys!

Dann Cahn, a pioneer of the three-camera method of filming and editing TV sitcoms, has died. Cahn also was the last surviving member of the original creative team behind the landmark series I Love Lucy. He was 89 and died Wednesday of natural causes at his home in west Los Angeles. Cahn worked on Lucy‘s entire six-season run from 1951 to 1957. Unlike series that preceded it, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz’s show used three motion picture cameras instead of one. The multicamera technique allowed for a show to be filmed continuously and in sequence, like a stage play. The amount of footage overwhelmed editors at the time, according to the La Times, and they located a cutting-edge device that had been created for the quiz show Truth Or Consequences. When it was delivered to Desilu, Cahn called it a “monster” because it wouldn’t fit into the editing room so...

Los Angeles—Using a newly developed editing machine that he dubbed the “three-headed monster,” Dann Cahn pioneered multi-camera editing on sitcoms in the 1950s while helping to craft a classic, I Love Lucy. Lucy broke ground in television by employing three cameras instead of one for filming, a then-novel system that allowed an episode to be filmed as though it were a stage play — continuously and in sequence. But the abundance of footage overwhelmed editors, who quickly sought out a cutting-edge contraption that was being created for the game show Truth or Consequences, Cahn later

Oh. Yes. Sofia Vergara is getting into the drama-importing business. The Modern Family star has sold a remake of Argentinian procedural Mueres Asesinas (Killer Women), about a law enforcement agency that's focuses on murders committed by women with a focus on their motivations.
In reaction to Mitt Romney's threats to cut funding for PBS, fans are organizing a Million Muppet March scheduled for November 3.

Truth or Consequences, one of the most popular game shows from the early days of TV, could be making a comeback. The Gurin Company, which produces Oh Sit! for The CW, has licensed the rights to the show and is currently shopping it to networks.
"Truth or Consequences is a great collection of game, stunt, hidden camera, reunions, surprises, strange talents and unique guests," says Phil Gurin, president and CEO of The Gurin Company. "It's just a really fun show. We're taking the original show and making it bigger."
Truth or Consequences ran for 38 years on radio and TV, including on both CBS and NBC, and later in syndication. The show, which Gurin licensed from Ralph Edwards Productions (which launched it on radio in 1939), was Bob Barker's first TV job in 1956. A town in New Mexico renamed itself Truth or Consequences, N.M., in homage and is still called that to this day.

It would be irresponsible, ignorant, and in some instances, completely unethical for Criminal Complex to encourage the dangerously unhealthy habit of cigarette smoking in others.
So that is exactly what we will do right now.
Hey, look, you’re intelligent (and damned attractive, if you don’t mind me saying so). You don’t need us to tell you that despite the facts that smoking can lead to a litany of health problems, that a full Nazi battalion is more welcome in a public place than a single smoker, and that the smell is on par to many with raw sewage, smoking is still the number one way in which a person can look cool. As intelligent as you are, you can argue against smoking however you please—cigarette manufacturers are the most manipulative, morally bankrupt businesses in America, if not the world; the money spent on cigarettes in a...

I was describing a new reality show I'd been watching for review -- called My Crazy Obsession- - when my wife asked the kind of salient question that probably is never heard in the programming department of any cable network.
"When did exploiting the mentally unstable become an accepted form of television entertainment?" she wondered aloud.
Indeed. On the episode of My Crazy Obsession that was sent out for review by TLC, half the show was devoted to a woman who wore only pink clothes, lived in an apartment totally decorated in pink, dyed her dog's coat pink -- even carried a small bottle of food coloring so she could get restaurants to serve her food in a pinkened state.
The other half was spent profiling a couple who collect Cabbage Patch Kids -- and are so devoted to their collection that the structure where they house their 3,000-plus dolls...

France's Cannes Film Festival has officially begun, and that means glamour, big premieres, gorgeous women in bikinis on yachts, and producers negotiating deals for oddball movies on said yachts.
One such cult-y sounding flick trying to come to life at the festival is a just-announced action-comedy starring none other than TV's Jack Bauer, Kiefer Sutherland.
According to THR Sutherland will headline "Sleight of Hand," a caper film "which centers on a crew of small-time crooks in Paris who inadvertently end up possessing a rare gold coin belonging to a notorious French gangster."
If that doesn't sound wacky enough, wait 'til you meet the rest of the cast:
Gérard Depardieu ("Cyrano de Bergerac"), Til Schweiger (Sgt. Hugo Stiglitz in "Inglourious Basterds"), Thomas Jane ("The Punisher," "Hung"), Johnny Hallyday (the Elvis Presley of France!), Eric Cantona (Manchester United football star!), and Jon Lovitz (Jon Freakin' Lovitz! "Yeah! That's the ticket!").

This actually isn't the first time Hilary Swank has seen one of her films go direct to DVD after the films "Red Dust" and "Birds of America" suffered the same fate, but surely there was more riding on this horror film from the resurgent Hammer Films about a recently separated doctor who learns her Brooklyn loft isn't quite as wonderful as she thought it would be. Kiefer Sutherland's next series debuts in just a few days -- just not on traditional television.
Sutherland is the star and an executive producer of "The Confession," a web series that debuts Monday, March 28 on Hulu. He plays a hitman who's making a confession to a priest (John Hurt), which is interspersed with flashbacks to some of the bad deeds his character has done.
In the latest behind-the-scenes featurette from the show (which you can see only on Zap2it), Sutherland talks about the freedom and the challenges of trying to tell stories in five- to seven-minute episodes. ("The Confession" will run for 10 episodes.)
"What's exciting to me, and also frustrating, about doing something on the Internet, is you're truly limited [only] by your own imagination," he says. "And you don't have to pay for a thing. You just log on and watch it."

Most people cannot tell from demeanor or body language when others are lying — this is best left to the experts. From executive producers of “24″ and “Arrested Development” comes “Lie To Me,” a drama of a deception expert who helps uncover the truth for the FBI, local police, law firms, corporations, and individuals. Season two arrives on DVD November 9 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.
“Lie to Me” stars Oscar® nominee Tim Roth (“The Incredible Hulk”, “Reservoir Dogs”) as the cheeky Dr. Cal Lightman, the world’s foremost expert on deception specializing in detecting facial micro-expressions and involuntary body-language to determine if and why someone is lying. Ning Hao's Crazy Racer is not the film I thought it was going to be. Granted, I went in having only read a brief summary, but that summary painted a very specific picture in my mind. What I was expecting was a purely cycle-centric film, a Chinese version of Breaking Away hopped-up on speed. And based on the opening, it appeared that's what I was going to get. The credits sequence is kinetic, frenetic, and borderline epileptic as we witness Olympic cyclist Geng Hao suffer a crushing defeat in an important race. Then, to add catastrophe to bruised ego, he is thrown out of racing for life after he tests positive for amphetamines- amphetamines found in the male-enhancement product he is conned into shilling. All things considered, Geng Hao takes this relatively well, but his coach becomes so enraged by the expulsion that he suffers a major heart attack.

There's no "i" in NCIS. Oh, wait, there is. While TV's #1 show features a talented cast from top to bottom, Michael Weatherly has probably shined the most so far this season.
In the heart-stopping Season 7 premiere, "Truth or Consequences," Weatherly's Tony Dinozzo was featured in an episode that seemed engineered to show off his character.
Whether he's tormenting McGee, being chastised by Gibbs, flirting with Ziva (Cote de Pablo) or annoying pretty much everyone, he's remained front and center ever since.
In an interview with TV Guide Magazine, Weatherly talked about his juvenile character, a song he has coming up on the NCIS soundtrack and much more. Excerpts below:
On NCIS now being TV's No. 1 show, not just the No. 1 non-reality show: "I just don’t want anything to change. No. 3 is kind of better. They’re still not gonna cancel you if you’re No. 3. But now everyone’s looking.

Already this is shaping up to be leaps and bounds ahead of season one of Lie to Me. The cases are more interesting, the writing is tighter, and most importantly, it's becoming far more personal for the employees of The Lightman Group. Every case has far more meaning when Cal and his team are in it for more than just a paycheck. That isn't to say that I'm against seeing cases like we saw in the season premiere with Erika Christensen, but finding out that Cal's daughter Emily has a connection to a statutory rape case he's investigating is far more compelling.

Fans of the much talked-about Tiva (that would be Tony and Ziva in NCIS speak) won't be pleased with tonight's season 7 premiere of CBS procedural NCIS. Tony (Michael Weatherly) and McGee (Sean Murray) are instructed by Gibbs (Mark Harmon) to search for a replacement for Ziva (Cote de Pablo), whose homecoming to Israel had not exactly been the most pleasant last season. From what we know, she was captured by the terrorists in Somalia that Rivkin had been investigating.
And true to form, Ziva is a no-show on tonight's premiere. Instead, we get a sort of Ziva, same willowy hair, same no-frills demeanor, and wouldn't you know it, Tony likes her too! The NCIS team heads back to work, despite the past still weighing heavily on their minds. Ralph Edwards, the radio and TV pioneer who created such enduring programs as This Is Your Life and Truth or Consequences, died Wednesday of heart failure at his home in West Hollywood. He was 92. Edwards died shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday in his sleep, surrounded by family members, according to a statement issued by Ralph Edwards Prods. Edwards was well known as the host of This Is Your Life, which debuted on radio in the 1940s and moved to TV in 1952 for a nine-season run on NBC. He later hosted a syndication version from 1971-73. This month, ABC and Fox Television Studios announced plans to revive Life as a series of specials next year, this time with Regis Philbin as host. In later years, Edwards' production company was the home of the syndicated hit that launched the court show genre, The People's Court, with retired Judge Joseph Wapner presiding from 1981-93.
