For well over a decade, Tate Steinsiek has brought nightmares to life in cinema and television with his amazing makeup effects, and soon he'll help bring scares to the screen behind the camera as the director of Cinestate's Castle Freak reboot.
The Castle Freak reboot news was announced by Steinsiek on his Instagram page (see below) over the weekend, where he wrote:
"So I can finally announce, I’m Directing the upcoming reboot of Castle Freak! It’s such an honor to be taking not only a Stuart Gordon classic, but also embracing the world of Lovecraft. Thank you @cinestatement Charles Band, and @fangoria for the opportunity, this is going to be fucking brutal. More news coming soon...."
Loosely based on H.P. Lovecraft's "The Outsider", the original Castle Freak (read Bryan Christopher's Catalog From the Beyond column on the film here) co-starred Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton as...

Barbara Crampton has been a mainstay in the horror community for more than thirty years, but she’d rather not be called a “Scream Queen.” In a recent essay, Crampton explained that for her, the term is reductive and dismisses the nuances and hard work that go into her roles. I can understand if she wants her legacy to carry more complexity than a catchy nickname, especially considering the wide range of roles that Crampton has contributed to the horror genre. In the past, she played a medical student hounded by reanimated corpses in Re-Animator, and more recently, she portrayed a grieving mother haunted by her past (as well as actual ghosts) in We Are Still Here, as well as the sinister host of a VHS board game in Beyond the Gates.

We may remember Independence Day, The Matrix, The Phantom Menace. But what about these forgotten 90s sci-fi films? And are any worth seeing?
Think back to the science fiction cinema of the 1990s, and some of the decade's biggest box-office hits will immediately spring to mind: The Phantom Menace, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Men In Black, Armageddon and Terminator 2 were all in the top 20 most lucrative films of the era.
But what about the sci-fi films of the 1990s that failed to make even close to the same cultural and financial impact of those big hitters? These are the films this list is devoted to - the flops, the straight-to-video releases, the low-budget and critically-derided. We've picked 50 live-action films that fit these criteria, and dug them up to see whether they're still worth watching in the 21st century.

From anime to pitch-black thrillers, here's our pick of the underappreciated movies of 1987...
Sometimes, the challenge with these lists isn't just what to put in, but what to leave out. We loved Princess Bride, but with a decent showing at the box office and a huge cult following, isn't it a bit too popular to be described as underappreciated? Likewise Joe Dante's Innerspace, a fabulously geeky, comic reworking of the 60s sci-fi flick, Fantastic Voyage.
What we've gone for instead is a mix of genre fare, dramas and animated films that may have garnered a cult following since, but didn't do well either critically or financially at the time of release. Some of the movies on our list just about made their money back, but none made anything close to the sort of returns enjoyed by the likes of 1987's biggest films - Three Men And A Baby, Fatal Attraction...

Welcome to another horror/sci-fi round-up! We have news on who will play the marvelous mutant Nightcrawler in X-Men: Apocalypse, a look at four new fright-styled T-shirts from Fright Rags (including an ’80's-esque Freddy Krueger), and home media release details for 20th Century Fox's The Pyramid.
Nightcrawler: He can teleport with his unique dimension-hopping ability, he's extremely agile, he knows how to handle a saber with expert ease, and he at times has a gleeful sense of humor. The X-Men mutant Nightcrawler has many admirable traits and was memorably portrayed by Alan Cumming in Bryan Singer's X2. With Singer back behind the camera for X-Men: Apocalypse, a film that will introduce more mutants to the growing ranks of the X-Mansion, it's been revealed by the director on his Instagram page that Kodi Smit-McPhee will play a young Nightcrawler.

Stuart Gordon shot his first film, 1985's much beloved gorefest Re-Animator, in Los Angeles but then decamped to Italy to shoot Dolls, his second movie and second terror tale. While there, Gordon was also taken down a peg, or 12, by a local craftsman. "They didn’t shoot sound in Italy, they weren't used to that," says Gordon, whose other directing credits include From Beyond, Castle Freak, and 2005's William H. Macy-starring Edmond. "I remember there was one day when I was shooting something and there was a carpenter hammering in the background, working on another one of our sets—hammering and sawing.

The heat thuds in the chest, the pulse races and the blood surges. We are not in the midst of a suspenseful and terrifying horror film where our emotions are being manipulated by the puppeteer filmmaker. We are preparing to speak with Master of Horror Stuart Gordon whose 1985 masterpiece Re-Animator has received an all new limited home entertainment release. Whilst Gordon has left the world of horror cinema to return to the theatre, he took us back into the past, to trace the journey of a child who grew into a master of genre.

The work of H.P. Lovecraft has inspired not only legions of fans throughout the years but an entire sub-genre of horror. Highlighted by frail, false realities masking a horrific and unfathomable truth… and of course, tentacles, fans embrace Lovecraftian horror films like the squishy appendages they feature.
And with the release of Dead Shadows, we remember our Top 11 Lovecraftian Horror Films.
This list contains not just movies inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, although some of them are certainly here; it also has movies that fall into the Lovecraftian-inspired category. Cosmic horror of the unknown and unknowable that could fracture sanity hovering over reality. Cthulhu. And, of course, those tentacles we mentioned earlier.
As for honorable mentions, how about the wildly popular hit HBO show "True Detective" for starters? There are certainly some Lovecraftian influences there, including Rust Cohle's ideas on fate and religion and the cult of Hastur operating in Louisiana.

Chris Alexander has snapped up some of the coolest jobs in horror journalism, and now he's creating cool new ones to take on as well. After a stint writing for Rue Morgue magazine, he moved on to become editor-in-chief at Fangoria, building a résumé between the two that is enough to make the rest of us genre hacks jealous. But then he went and resurrected Gorezone (which he edits), and now, in conjunction with horror/exploitation film legend Charles Band, he's helped create (and edit) Delirium, a magazine devoted to the film catalogs of Empire Pictures and Full Moon. It's with tongue planted firmly in cheek that I talk of jealousy, of course; Alexander is in the position(s) he's in through a combination of talent, hard work and an absolute love of the stuff he's writing about. That love shines through in Delirium #1, a debut issue that's as bold,...

Around here we keep a close eye on just what Full Moon Productions has cooking. Why? Because Charles Band and company have given us lots of laughs and frights over the years, and we love them like the Castle Freak's penile nub.
Next up for these cats is a movie called Trophy Heads, and right now we've got the title treatment and first images from the set for you. Band and company are being rather tight-lipped about the project, and thus far we don't have many details.
However, we can in fact tell you that genre icon Linnea Quigley will be starring in the flick alongside Carel Struycken (Lurch from The Addams Family films) and that judging from the images below... this may just be one hell of a bloody ride.
Check out the eye candy (literally) below, and look for more as we get it!

Not much more than a group of actors sat round in a Romanian castle (the very same one owned by Charles Band that featured in Castle Freak no doubt) talking trash to each other, with the occasional appearance by a group of deformed “creatures”… that is the plot of Hideous! in a nutshell. Although the official synopsis goes something like this: “Dr. Lorca, an eccentric collector of biological oddities, has just acquired his greatest specimen; a horrible mutant born of noxious waste… but the creature’s rightful owner wants it back. The collector’s clash is cut short though, as the sickening specimen comes to life, re-animating an angry, oozing little army of ferocious freaks.”

Though Charles Band is most known to horror fans as being the man behind Full Moon, his contributions to the genre began many years prior to forming the production company that birthed films like Gingerdead Man, Puppet Master, and my personal favorite, Castle Freak. Unhappy with the way distribution companies were handling the films he made under the Charles Band International Productions banner, Band launched his own theatrical distribution label in 1983, called Empire Pictures. Empire was responsible for the production and theatrical release of films like Re-Animator, Ghoulies and From Beyond, and it was only after the company folded that Band formed Full Moon.

Doctor Who: Spearhead From Space
Jon Pertwee's first outing as the Doctor – and the first time his adventures were shown in colour – is something of an oddity in the show's long run. Due to industrial action in the BBC studios, this one was filmed largely on location and, unique for old Who, shot entirely on glorious 16mm film.
It sounds like a small thing but it made an incredible difference; this is the only one of the vintage stories to have the picture quality worthy of a HD transfer. The Blu-ray looks superb, as if they shot a (very) low-budget Doctor Who movie late in 1969, which is pretty much what they did. The sets look sturdier, more colourful and far better than their usual overlit, studio-bound video camerawork. Pertwee impresses, as does his short-lived partnership...

Stuart Gordon's From Beyond has always been the stepchild when it came to his Lovecraft adaptations. The iconic gore fest Re-Animator is the elephant in the room, there's no two ways about that. While Re-Animator has gained an immense cult following, well deserved I might add, From Beyond languished in home video hell for many, many years. It wasn't until 2007 that the film hit DVD, and in its unedited, "director's cut" version and finally began to win some of the praise that it deserved all along. Now, as the Gods are good, we have not one, but two editions of what may be Stuart Gordon's crowning achievement in Lovecraft adaptation (Dagon and Castle Freak are fun, but definitely not in the running) on Blu-ray....

It's an iconic horror image that's proven inescapable for Barbara Crampton, the much-beloved cult actress and scream queen: being secured to a cold operating table while a demented, re-animated severed head licks at her with perverted glee, supported by it's deceased, but very much active former body. Luckily, the spirited actress is quick to inform all her fans and interviewers alike that scenes like this from Re-Animator may make your average, run of the mill actress run for the nearest phone to promptly fire their agents, but she welcomed it. Barbara Crampton was to be something more than more tits 'n ass slasher fodder, a pitfall often met by young actresses of the time.

Castle Freak
Stars: Jefffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, Jonathan Fuller, Jessica Dollarhide | Written and Directed by Stuart Gordon
I could argue that there is something subtly brilliant about Castle Freak, yes it’s got its faults and its level of sexual violence will put some off, but in other ways it’s the perfect horror film. It knows its limits it sets up the backstory for the whole film in just a few scenes at the start and it’s unashamedly brutally violent, especially in its uncut form.
When Duchess D’Orsino dies of old age she leaves a secret in the basement, a secret that survives and lays in wait for the next owners of her home. When John Reilly, his wife and blind daughter inherit the building it’s not long before the creature that has been hidden there is set free. Working through a stressful marriage and tortured...

Another week, another Monday. So it’s time for the rundown of DVDs and Blu-ray’s hitting stores online and offline this week. It’s another packed week, with plenty of movies waiting to take you money, so let us breakdown the new releases and highlight what you should – and shouldn’t – be buying from today, May 14th 2012.
Pick(S) Of The Week
The Sitter (DVD/Blu-ray)
When the world’s most irresponsible babysitter takes three of the world’s worst kids on an unforgettable overnight adventure through the streets of New York City, it’s anyone’s guess who’s going to make it home in one piece. Starring Jonah Hill (Knocked Up, Get Him To The Greek) and Sam Rockwell (Moon & The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy), The Sitter is a new level of twisted and debauched hilarity from the director of Pineapple Express, David Gordon Green.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows
As sure as night follows day, a hit film becomes a franchise. Robert Downey Jr and Guy Ritchie's take on the often-filmed subject plays the titular sleuth as a sort of supernatural mind-reader who favours punching people in slow motion over deductive reasoning. This second outing has almost even less of a right to trade on the Holmes name than the first, but is arguably the better movie – it's still great-looking, slick entertainment.
The supporting cast is more interesting and entertaining too, from Mad Men's Jared Harris's snobbish turn as nemesis Moriarty to Stephen Fry's even more snobbish Mycroft Holmes – who insists on calling his brother "Shirley". It's a more lavish, detailed, camp and fun world.
If you're expecting clever wordplay and thrashing through clues then you're better off with the BBC's Sherlock. This one is all about huge guns and running through exploding forests.

Most of us fell in love with actress Barbara Crampton after her portrayal of Megan Halsey in Stuart Gordon's cult classic Lovecraftian horror comedy Re-Animator in 1985.
In the film she gets mixed up in the bizarre experiments of Dr. Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs), who can reanimate the dead, and must suffer through one of the most insane moments involving a severed head in cinema ever.
From there Crampton continued to win us over with her countless other performances in independent genre films like From Beyond and Castle Freak (reuniting her with both Gordon and Combs) as well as with her roles in other B-movie delights like Chopping Mall, Puppet Master, Trancers II and Robot Wars.
After taking some time off to raise her family, Crampton has now made it back on the indie horror scene with roles in Adam Wingard's You're Next and in Rob Zombie's upcoming The Lords of Salem,...

For those of you who have yet to see Stuart Gordon's superb 1985 Re-Animator and its 1989 sequel, Bride of Re-Animator, allow me to introduce you to Doctor Herbert West, the titular Re-Animator, portrayed by the one and only Jeffrey Combs. What is Combs up to these days? We were lucky enough to catch up with him for an exclusive interview to find out.
Before we look forward, however, let's take a quick look back at Combs' career:
Through his seriously questionable research and macabre experiments in Re-Animator, Combs' Doctor West pioneers a serum that brings dead tissue back to life – often with disastrous consequences. Playing a man dangling so precariously on the edge of genius and lunacy -"I will not be shackled by the failures of your God!" - is no cakewalk for any actor, but Jeffrey relished the challenge, turning out one of the most entertaining madman performances...

Full Moon Pictures has given horror fans plenty of cult classic movies over the years and in its various incarnations whether it be the Gingerdead Man and Evil Bong franchises or, most famously and successfully, the Puppet Master, Ghoulies, and Subspecies franchises. This is, of course, to say nothing about some of their wild and crazy low-budget indie releases or their history of work with Stuart Gordon that led to such classics as Re-Animator and From Beyond and such underrated cult gems as The Pit and the Pendulum and Castle Freak!

There's no doubt that writer/director/producer Charles Band is one of the true pioneers of independent horror. He's written and directed over 30 independent genre films and produced some 244 titles as well, not to mention founding both Empire Pictures in the 80s as well as Full Moon Entertainment.
Full Moon has been producing and distributing horror films since 1989, including such classics as Puppet Master, Demonic Toys, Castle Freak, Killjoy and The Gingerdead Man.
Now Band is back with his latest feature, Evil Bong 3D: Wrath of Bong, which has the writer/director gearing up for a road tour in support of the film’s release that kicks off with a premiere at the historic Portage Theater in Chicago on April 9th. Dread Central recently had the opportunity to chat with Band to find out what inspired him to take Evil Bong 3D on the road, the gimmickry of 3D and...
