DC Comics' "Tales of the Titans" #1, now available, is written by Shannon Hale, Dean Hale and illustrated by Javier Rodriguez, with covers by Nicola Scott, Stanley "Artgerm" Lau, Rodriguez, Fatima Majid and Chris Samnee:
"...'The Titans' have stepped up to become the Dcu's premier superhero team, and all eyes are on them! Who are 'Starfire', 'Raven', 'Donna Troy' and 'Beast Boy'?
"Where do they come from, and what do they stand for? First up is alien princess and warrior 'Starfire', whose huge heart, huger hair, and fiery fists have made her a fan-favorite member of the team!
"When a spaceship bearing 'Tamaranean' markings crash-lands on Earth, Starfire goes on a solo mission to uncover its origins. But what awaits her on that journey will bring her back to the earliest days of her youth, to memories of two sisters eternally at war...and perhaps the...

For anyone who can’t get enough of Mr. Darcy and the other characters in Jane Austen’s books, welcome to Austenland.
In the movie, Keri Russell (TV’s The Americans) plays Jane Hayes, one such devoted fan, who has saved all her money for a trip of a lifetime — to the eccentric resort Austenland, where fans can live out the Regency era of the books.
Armed with her bonnet, corset and needlepoint, Jane aims to avoid spinsterhood, but her difficulties come in figuring out where the fantasy ends and real life – and maybe love — begins.
Rated PG-13, Austenland also stars Jane Seymour (Love Wedding Marriage), Jennifer Coolidge (American Reunion), J.J. Feild (Captain America: The First Avenger) and Bret McKenzie (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey). The film was directed by first-time helmer Jerusha Hess on a screenplay...

Austenland, allow me to tell you how ardently I loathe and despise you. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): the trailer looked dire
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Jane Austen would be appalled. Certainly Darcy would have a glare of withering disdain for all involved. And I don’t get how Austen fans — both within the narrative and watching from the outside — are supposed to find this enlightening or amusing. American Jane (Keri Russell: Extraordinary Measures) is so obsessed with Austen’s novels that she plunks down her entire life savings to travel to Austenland in England, which is meant to be an immersive Regency-era experience — sort of like those murder-mystery weekend things — and then makes no attempt whatsoever to engage with the scenario. This appears not to be because the place is like...

Remember the butterfly feelings you got the first time you saw Mr Darcy – aka Colin Firth – dive into the lake at Pemberley and emerge on the other side, all wet and troubled in the BBC’s adaptation of Pride and Prejudice? If no goofy smile creeps over your face, this crazy comedy will have no bearing on you whatsoever – or, you’re a straight male who had to endure the sighs of another while watching this iconic moment of dreaminess in the 1995 TV mini-series.

Keri Russell has been a shining light on TV thanks to Felicity and FX's The Americans, but she's never quite managed to catch fire on the big screen. Where Waitress should've provided her with a career springboard, it instead sent her into a series of thankless second-string wife or love interest parts. Russell's name sits above the title in new romantic comedy Austenland, but what a shame then that it's a huge waste of her considerable talents.
Based on Shannon Hale's chick lit novel, it follows an American singleton obsessed with all things Jane Austen who cobbles together her life savings to take a trip to an Austen-themed resort in the UK. Dress up, role play and comical British accents are the order of the...

Chicago – One of the most incorrect assumptions in literature iconography is the focus on Jane Austen as a purely romantic writer – skipping the depth of character, humor and cynicism in her work, for the sake of mooning over “Mr. Darcy.” The new film “Austenland” continues this trend.
Rating: 1.5/5.0
This is adapted from a novel that no one evidently should read, from screenwriters Jerusha Hess (“Napoleon Dynamite,” “Gentleman Broncos”) and the source novelist Shannon Hale. It would be a great relief to present Jane Austen to them, Marshall-McCluhan-in-Annie-Hall style, and have the legend say, “you know nothing of my work.” Co-opting the great author’s name for this dull and terrible exercise in “romance” is a travesty in story woven justice. The filmmakers may counter that it’s all in fun, but there is nothing fun about taking one element of an author’s good works, and creating a “theme park” imaging of it,...

Growing up, girls often tend to read and whole-heartedly believe in fairytales, and think their lives could magically turn into a head-over-heals love story, like the ones they read in Jane Austin novels. While many girls start to outgrow their romanticized fantasies as they mature into young women, there are some who wistfully cling to their belief that their Mr. Darcy will still arrive on their doorstep to sweep them off their feet.
Jane Hayes, the main character in the new romantic comedy Austenland, which marks the feature film directorial debut of Napoleon Dynamite writer Jerusha Hess, is one such hopeless romantic who longs to live in a Jane Austin novel. It isn’t until she lives out her life-long fantasy though that she realizes that her dreams aren’t as romantic as they seem.

Editor’s note: Kate’s review originally ran during this year’s Sundance Film Festival, but we’re re-running it as the film opens in limited theatrical release this weekend. Obsession with fictional literary heroes is nothing new, but Austenland’s Jane Hayes (Keri Russell) has taken her love for Jane Austen’s (again, fictional) Mr. Darcy and the Regency-era world he (as written in a fictional novel) inhabited in Austen’s (still fictional, Jane) “Pride & Prejudice” to new lows. While the source material for Jerusha Hess’s film, Shannon Hale’s very popular novel of the same name, found its heroine focusing her attentions on a still more fake Darcy – the one played by Colin Firth in the also very popular but not entirely true to Austen’s work BBC miniseries version of “Pride & Prejudice” – Hess wisely expands Jane’s obsession to apply more thoroughly to the rest of Austen’s work and her Regency Era...

As the writer of 2009's "Gentlemen Broncos" and now the writer-director of "Austenland," Jerusha Hess accomplishes the seemingly impossible — she makes the brilliant Jennifer Coolidge completely unfunny. Hess's Midas-in-reverse touch permeates all of "Austenland," taking an amusing premise (from the novel by Shannon Hale, who's credited as co-writer) and pounding the comedy out of it with a mallet. What could have been a sharp satire about women's unrealistic romantic expectations and the people who exploit them instead becomes a draggy, dreary mess with an empire waistline. She made her name and her fortune with the "Twilight" books and movies, but now Stephenie Meyer is ready for new experiences. She steps out as a producer of "Austenland," which opens in limited release this weekend. It's her fourth producer credit (she produced both "Breaking Dawn" installments and "The Host"), but the first movie she's worked on that's not based on her own writings.
The story focuses on a young woman (Keri Russell) who is obsessed with the work of Jane Austen and thus heads to an Austen-themed English estate to live out her Regency era dreams. Once there, she finds out that maybe living within a fantasy isn't all it's cracked up to be.
We chatted with Meyer ahead of the movie's release and got her to dish on her secret to youth (she's not a vampire), what she's obsessed with and her favorite "Twilight" fanfiction of all time.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single lady who obsesses over the works of Jane Austen -- particularly Pride and Prejudice, and specifically the 1995 miniseries version with Colin Firth -- will find her real-life boyfriends lacking when compared to the dreamily perfect Mr. Darcy. This subclass of fandom was explored amusingly by Shannon Hale in her 2007 novel Austenland, a fluffy bit of chick-lit that I am not ashamed to say I read and found quite agreeable, even though I am a boy. Well, not to be one of those "the book is better than the movie" people, but holy crap, what an insufferable load the Austenland movie is. In the hands of Jerusha Hess, who co-wrote her husband Jared's films (starting...

Keri Russell won the admiration of many an adolescent girl during her four-season run as the star of "Felicity," a teen drama focused on an awkward young girl's adjustment to college life. Now those teen girls have grown up, are in their 30s, and get to see Russell embrace an adult fantasy reminiscent of the wistful ones many of us had years ago. Russell stars as Jane, a Jane Austen obsessive who blows an exorbitant amount of money to immerse herself in a Jane Austen reenactment resort in England. The hilarious cast of supporting players includes Jennifer Coolidge, Jj Feild, Bret McKenzie, James Callis, Georgia King and Jane Seymour. Adapted from the novel by Shannon Hale and directed by Jerusha Hess, who previously brought us "Napolean Dynamite," the film premiered at Sundance and opens tomorrow, August 16 in New York and Los Angeles with plans to expand. Fans of Jane Austen’s acclaimed literary works have long appreciated the author’s heavy emphasis on outspoken women who aren’t afraid to say what they need to in order to capture their dream man. But the new romantic comedy ‘Austenland,’ which was co-written and helmed by Jerusha Hess in her feature film directorial debut, takes a quirky tone to show how even the most reserved women can fulfill their Austen fantasies. The movie, which is based on the 2007 Shannon Hale novel of the same name, celebrates the fun aspects of the iconic writer’s romanticism. ‘Austenland’ follows 30-something, single Jane Hayes (Keri Russell), a seemingly normal young woman with a secret: [ Read More ]

New York — When Stephenie Meyer's name is mentioned, most people think of her "Twilight Saga" vampire books and films. But the author wants a new audience as a film producer.
Meyer produced "Austenland," starring Keri Russell and based on the novel by Meyer's friend Shannon Hale. The film, directed by Jerusha Hess, opens in limited release Friday.
Although Meyer was a producer for "The Twilight Saga-Breaking Dawn" films and the movie adaptation of her novel "The Host," this is the first time she's produced someone else's work. She said in a recent interview that she got to be "a little bit more hands-on, a little more dirty" with producing duties.

It's been nine years since screenwriter Jerusha Hess introduced the world to the now cult classic "Napoleon Dynamite." Following the success and critical acclaim, she co-wrote two more features -- "Nacho Libre" and "Gentlemen Broncos" -- with her husband and writing partner Jared Hess. After this trio of "dude-centric" movies, she's making her directional debut with "Austenland," a movie that is positively for the ladies. Adapted from the novel by Shannon Hale, "Austenland" centers on a Jane Austen-obsessed woman (Keri Russell) who takes the trip of a lifetime to an Austen reenactment resort. Rounding out the cast are Jennifer Coolidge, Jj Feild, Bret McKenzie, James Callis, Georgia King and Jane Seymour. The film had its premiere at Sundance and is opening in theaters August 16. Indiewire recently sat down with Hess in New York to discuss "Austenland," its place on Jane Austen fan culture and what girls can learn about love from the film.

Author of novels behind film series vows to steer clear of future books about vampire Edward Cullen and wife Bella
Stephenie Meyer is "so over" Twilight and will steer clear of future instalments in the series of romance novels that spawned the blockbuster film saga.
The novelist told Variety she would only consider returning to the supernatural world of cleancut vampire Edward Cullen, hunky werewolf Jacob Black and the perpetually lovelorn Bella Swan (later Cullen) if it meant writing "three paragraphs on my blog saying which of the characters died". She then added, bizarrely (and somewhat terrifyingly for Tolkien fans): "I'm interested in spending time in other worlds, like Middle-earth."
"I get further away [from Twilight] every day," said Meyer. "For me, it's not a happy place to be."
The Twilight series, which stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, has so far generated almost $3.3bn (£2.1bn) at the global box office,...

Jane Austen fans, do not be afraid of "Austenland." With the 200th anniversary of "Pride and Prejudice" approaching, screenwriter-turned-director Jerusha Hess ("Napoleon Dynamite") worked with novelist Shannon Hale to bring her book "Austenland" to the screen. This movie about a mousy Austen escapist who plunks her hard-earned money on a getaway to the English countryside where actors pretend to be part of a real-life Regency romance is hilarious. (No mobiles allowed.) And it functions as a sharply observed comedy of manners. Central to "Austenland"'s success is actress Keri Russell, who at 37 is having a fabulous year. She is in her prime, as Miss Jean Brodie would say. For one thing, the actress, who broke out in J.J. Abrams' "Felicity" in 1998, is fussy about the parts she does. This is why you're more likely to see her in a tiny indie than a big bad studio rom-com. She is...

Jane Austen Will Have Her Revenge: Hess’ Debut a Pandering, Middle Class Courting Cipher
Jerusha Hess, screenwriter of Napoleon Dynamite, which her brother Jared Hess directed, turns her to sights to the adaptation of Shannon Hale’s successful novel, Austenland for her directorial debut. If 2007’s The Jane Austen Book Club didn’t feel enough like a resolutely ridiculous enough caper to the insane Austen mania that’s had book clubs and perennial film adaptations going strong for several decades, Hess’ film confirms the disturbing social tendencies reinforced by these mob think Austen obsessions on display here. Instead of exploring some of the subtext of what’s really going on here though, Hess rides the film into broad romantic territory. While there’s certainly an audience for this corrosive reinforcement of gender norms, for those that have been clued in to the cruel crookery of what real love looks like...

A rom-com about a Jane Austen theme park embraced gender apartheid for its launch in the hope of repeating the success of a wave of female-centred films scoring at the box office
"One half of the world cannot understand the pleasures of the other," sighed Jane Austen's heroine Emma. It is a lament that has resonated ever since. Entire industries – psychology, counselling, dating sites – have tried to bridge the gap. But what appeals to the opposite sex, it seems, remains a mystery.
This has long frustrated Hollywood. Directors have been hired and fired, scripts tweaked, audiences tested and endings reshot in search of a movie formula that appeals to men and women. Now comes a movie that says it is strictly a film by women, about women, for women. Men can take a hike.

Listen up all you Jane Austen fans – the brand new Austenland trailer is here.
Austenland is a romantic comedy about 30-something, single Jane Hayes (Keri Russell), a seemingly normal young woman with a secret: her obsession with all things Jane Austen. But when she decides to spend her life savings on a trip to an English resort catering to Austen-crazed women, Jane’s fantasies of meeting the perfect Regency-era gentleman suddenly become more real than she ever could have imagined.
Based on the novel by Shannon Hale (who also co-wrote the script), the film was written and directed by Jerusha Hess (writer, Napoleon Dynamite) and produced by Stephenie Meyer’s Fickle Fish Films.
How will Austen fans react to the film? Hess’ retort:

"I am single, because apparently the only good men are fictional." Though Keri Russell has been dealing with darker edgy material with appearances in films like Dark Skies and her FX series "The Americans," she took some time for another charming indie, not entirely unlike her alluring turn in Waitress from years ago. Austenland is a romantic comedy about a young woman obsessed with Jane Austen's seminal romance Pride & Prejudice, specifically, the leading man Mr. Darcy as brought to life by Colin Firth. Hoping for an escape, she heads to a getaway inspired by Austen's work, and just may find the man of her dreams. Watch! Here's the first trailer for Keri Russell's new comedy, Austenland. The movie is based on Shannon Hale's novel, and was adapted for the screen by Jerusha Hess, the wife of Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre director Jared Hess. The movie premiered at Sundance earlier this year, and here's what Eli had to say about it in his review:
"Austenland is a cute comedy with an interesting premise. Mixing role playing actors and real lovelorn women can, as the movie states, 'become a complicated thing,' but it keeps your interest and keeps you laughing - even though the predictable twists don't always keep you guessing."
So it might be something worth eventually checking out. Here's the synopsis:
Jane’s life-size paper doll of Mr. Darcy and her “I Love Darcy” tote may be tattered, but even in her thirties, she hasn’t grown out of her obsession with all things Jane Austen.

The Twilight series may be finished, but that doesn't mean that author Stephenie Meyer is done with the movie business. Earlier this year, a movie adaptation of The Host was released in theaters, and she also produced the upcoming rom-com Austenland. A trailer has just been released for the flick based on Shannon Hale's novel, which is set in a Jane Austen-themed, ultra-exclusive resort. The cast includes Keri Russell, Jennifer Coolidge, Bret McKenzie and Jane Seymour, and from the looks of it, they are all absolutely pitch perfect in their roles. Austenland will hit theaters in limited release on August 16th.

After making an impressive debut at Sundance at the start of the year, Austenland is heading into theatres across the Atlantic starting next month, and now a great first trailer has landed online.
Whilst we tend to think of cosplay as largely referring to dressing up works from anime, video games, or (blockbuster) movies, we get to see an entirely different side to dressing up as fictional characters in the first trailer below, via Yahoo Movies.
Keri Russell looks great in the lead. And whilst I admit that I’m not the biggest fan of Jennifer Coolidge, I love everything I’ve seen Bret McKenzie do, and can’t wait to see him here alongside Russell.

Giddy up! It's time to hop on that trusty old steed and head out to "Austenland"!
The first trailer for Jerusha Hess' directorial debut, which she co-wrote alongside the book's author Shannon Hale, is in and man can we relate to Miss Jane Hayes (Keri Russell), whose fascination with the literary world of Jane Austen has left her single and totally unwilling to mingle with just any regular chap.
You see, the girl's got Mr. Darcy — that'd be stud Fitzwilliam Darcy of Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," otherwise known as Colin Firth — on the brain (and in her colonial-themed living room by way of a cardboard cutout), and for her she's only alone in life "because apparently the only good men are fictional." Given the fact that "Twilight Saga" author Stephenie Meyer served as a producer on this film, the connection should be blaringly obvious here: There's a danger in...

In the latest Jane Austen-themed romcom "Austenland," Keri Russell plays Jane Hayes, a woman who becomes obsessed with the BBC miniseries of "Pride and Prejudice" and travels to an Austen re-enactment theme park to find herself a dashing gentleman, ideally someone along the lines of Mr. Darcy himself. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Shannon Hale. Moviefone debuted the poster today, which shows Keri Russell geeking out over Mr. Darcy (join the club, honey). Hopefully she's also read the book if she's going to survive in the world of Austen. Jennifer Coolidge plays Jane's buxom sidekick who is sure to get a few laughs in. Also starring is J.J. Feild, a period piece vet who played Henry Tilney in "Northanger Abbey," and seems a likely contender for Jane's hero. Rounding out the cast is unlikely period pick Bret McKenzie ("Flight of the Concords...

A second clip from Stephenie Meyer's latest project, the book-to-screen adaptation of Shannon Hale's Austenland, has now been unveiled. In it, Jane (Keri Russell) finds herself in trouble with the administration at the Jane Austen theme park because she's got an "unmentionable" - that is, a cell phone, which is highly forbidden presumably because it detracts from the time-specific ambiance of the place. As her first production project of a movie not based on her own material, Meyer has said that the set of Austenland was much more peaceful and relaxing than her prior film projects. Because of that experience, her company Fickle Fish Films has now acquired two other books - Lois Duncan's Down A Dark Hall and Kendare Blake's Anna Dressed In Blood - to adap ....

Naturally, as the Sundance Film Festival continues to unfold in Park City, Utah, more clips and trailers from films featured in the festival are being released this week. This time around, we’ve got two clips from “Austenland,” which debuted last week, showcasing the film’s quirky, offbeat charm. You also get a pretty good taste of some of the cast, which includes Keri Russell, Jennifer Coolidge and "Flight of the Conchords" star Bret McKenzie. Russell leads the film as a woman obsessed with the BBC production of “Pride and Prejudice,” who travels to an Austen-styled England resort to find her perfect gentleman. The film marks the feature debut of “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Nacho Libre” co-writer Jerusha Hess, and it’s based on the novel of the same title by Shannon Hale. Also of note, Stephanie Meyer, the creator of the "Twilight" series, helped produce the film. The picture has gotten.

Twilight World? Stephenie Meyer, Austenland Stars Discuss Which Books Would Make The Best Theme Park
You don’t have to read too much into Twilight to realize that before she was the creator of books people obsess over, Stephenie Meyer was obsessed with other people’s books. She took that obsession to new levels recently, becoming a producer on the film Austenland, based on Shannon Hale’s book about a woman (played by Keri Russell) who visits a Jane Austen theme park in search of some old-fashioned romance. At the flick’s Sundance premiere, VH1 News asked Meyer and a handful of the movie’s stars what books or authors they’d like to see made into theme parks, a la The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
“[Austenland] is my theme park,” Meyer said. “If this place really existed, if I could go and dress up in Regency attire and hang out all day, reading books in a beautiful library, I would totally … That’s my vacation.

From the co-writer of Napoleon Dynamite, Gentlemen Broncos and Nacho Libre comes another venture into the bizarre. Don’t dismiss this project because Jerusha Hess collaborated with Twilight writer and fellow Mormon Stephanie Meyer. Yes, this is a romance, but there are no traces of sparkling vampires. The dialogue delights with abrupt silliness and veers into the unexpected. Fed up with the gross misconduct of men in the modern age, Jane (Felicity’s Keri Russell) uses her life savings to escape a mundane desk job and disappear for a short time into an immersive Jane Austen role playing experience. Having memorized the first three chapters of Pride and Prejudice and saying she knows the book “intimately,” Jane believes that this will literally make her dreams come true. Despite the objections of her grounded best friend, the travel agent sells Jane...
