For every Harry Potter or Hunger Games series, there are those franchises that didn't quite set the world on fire...
Since Insurgent came out, I’ve been thinking about those less fortunate: the franchise wannabes. While Divergent may have succeeded financially, (a film that rode on the coat-tails of the even more lucrative The Hunger Games franchise) there are others who didn’t quite make it into the movie world’s big leagues. These are the franchise-starters that flopped, the films produced with the optimistic hope that they will bring in the readies and kick-start Hollywood’s latest franchise. Worse luck for them, really.
For the sake of simplicity, this list will zero in on Ya franchise-starters, films adapted from a young adult novel or with that audience in mind. There are plenty of more mature films that struggled such as Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time, The A-Team...

Today, Entertainment Weekly has revealed the cover art for "The Fall Of Five," book four in Pittacus Lore's best-selling "Lorien Legacies" series. "Five" follows the first three installments, "I Am Number Four," "The Power Of Six" and "The Rise Of Nine" and picks up where the third book left off. The official book description, which was revealed in late March on Pittacus Lore's blog, explains the plot synopsis as follows: The Garde are finally reunited, but do they have what it takes to win the war against the Mogadorians? John Smith—Number Four—thought that things would change once the Garde found each other. They would stop running. The ....

Straight from the halls of the Anaheim Convention Center during WonderCon, we have the brand new trailer for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, courtesy of Apple! While everyone points to Harry Potter, Twilight and The Hunger Games as examples of blockbuster hits, the truth is that the young adult adaptation genre has seen its fair share of disappointments over the last few years. I Am Number Four, based on the book by Pittacus Lore (aka Jobie Hughes and James Frey), and Beautiful Creatures, based on the work of Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, were both box office disappointments, and even Stephenie Meyer's The Host, which just came out last weekend, was considered an under-performer. So what will the fates have in store for The Mortal Instruments? Based on the first book in the series by Cassandra Clare, the new movie stars Lily Collins as Clary Fray, a seemingly...

Kevin Durand is not a rookie when it comes to young adult novel adaptations, though it's possible you totally missed him. The actor played the central villain in last year's I Am Number Four, which was based on the book by Pittacus Lore (akaJames Frey and Jobie Hughes), though in the film he was covered in make-up making him hard to recognize unless you already knew he was in the movie. Hopefully he'll get some actual screentime in the newest project that he's lined up. Durand, along with actor Robert Maillet, have signed on for parts in the upcoming The Mortal Instruments adaptation, according to Variety. The movie is based on the young adult novel by Cassandra Clare that centers on a young girl named Clary Fray who learns that she actually comes a long line of demon hunters. Lily Collins, best known for her roles in films like Abduction...

Release date: August 23, 2011
I Am Number Four was an entertaining bit of young adult sci-fi in theaters last year. It did make money, but it was mostly overlooked even though the book on which the movie was based was a bestseller. The book series continues even if the movie franchise is shelved.
The latest book in the series, The Power of Six, picks up after I Am Number Four with Four and Number Six still on the run. In case you’re unfamiliar with the mythology of the book series it goes like this: a group of powerful alien youths were sent to Earth with protectors to hide until the day comes that they can return home and use their abilities to save their home world that’s currently under attack by another vicious alien race. I Am Number Four (Blu-Ray/DVD Combo Pack)Walt Disney Home Entertainment2011/Rated PG-13/109 minsList Price: $44.99 – Now AvailableDoes anyone remember an NBC TV series from back in the eighties called The Powers of Matthew Star? It featured a young Peter Barton as a High School kid who began to manifest incredible abilities and discovered he was the member of a Royal family on an alien planet. Sharing his secret was the school janitor, Louis Gossett, Jr., who served as his mentor and would guide him in the ways of their planet. When I heard the premise of I Am Number Four, it was nearly impossible for me not think of that short-lived sci-fi series. And to be honest, the final product ain't much different. Instead of being hunted by FBI agents, the teenager from another world, played here by Alex Pettyfer, is running from an evil alien race out to kill him.

Back in the day, Bill Cosby’s “Leonard Part 6″ didn’t have much luck introducing itself to audiences as an original product with a higher integer in its title, and the teen-lilting sci-fi action adventure “I Am Number Four” perhaps elicited similar confusion when it bowed in theaters earlier this February. Unimpressive domestic returns ($55 million), however, might not have sullied the chances of survival for this adaptation of the first in a proposed six-book series cowritten by James Frey (yes, the lying author emasculated by Oprah Winfrey) and Jobie Hughes. If it returns, one will have both international markets (where it grossed $90 million) and the presence of Teresa Palmer,...

I Am Number Four is a fast-paced sci-fi romp that feels familiar, but manages to be entertaining. It is a popcorn adventure film with decent effects and acting that is a fun watch on a rainy afternoon. Based on the novel by Pittacus Lore (James Frey and Jobie Hughes), the film was directed by D.J. Caruso (Eagle Eye and Disturbia) with a screenplay from Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (the creative minds behind Smallville and the upcoming Charlie's Angels television series) and Marti Noxon (television's Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the upcoming remake of Fright Night). It stars Alex Pettyfer (Beastly), Timothy Olyphant (A Perfect Getaway), Teresa Palmer (The Sorcerer's Apprentice), Dianna Agron (Glee), Callan McAuliffe (Flipped),...

I Am Number Four (2011), the film adaptation of the young adult science fiction novel by Pittacus Lore goes to Blu-Ray/DVD on May 24th. The book spent seven straight weeks at #1 on the children's chapter of the New York Times Best Seller list before being picked up by DreamWorks Pictures who released it as a film this past February. For teen sci-fi fans, this could be the beginning of a beautiful relationship. I Am Number Four (2011) is the first of a proposed six book (and possible film) adventure series that follows nine teenage aliens from the planet Lorien as they try to escape from another race of aliens hell-bent on their destruction. The teens hide among us here on Earth protected by a charm that only allows them to be killed in a specific order. The main character, 15 year old John Smith (played by Alex Pettyfer), is Number Four and...

A young boy from another world is raised on in the mid-west to use his special abilities for the good of all. He struggles to fit in at high school, constantly hiding his true nature under the watchful eye of his mentor. After Smallville, one would have thought the writing team of Alfred Gough and Miles Millar would have been comfortable with the subject matter much as Marti Noxon could have used her experiences from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to add some snark and fun to the high school life. Instead, the three combined to pen a middling, ineffective script adaptation of I Am Number Four. The movie, made for just under $60 million earned barely $90 million worldwide and extinguished much hope of a film series to follow the projected six book franchise. Now out from Walt Disney Home Entertainment, the movie is so incredibly devoid of personality and charm, it...

Back in 2006, it’s clear that James Frey vs. Oprah resulted in a total Ko in favor of the talk show maven. But! Could the tables be turned later this year? Harpo confirms to EW that James Frey is set to return to The Oprah Winfrey Show sometime in May, five years after being publicly scolded and humiliated by Oprah for fabricating parts of his best-selling memoir, A Million Little Pieces. We shouldn’t, however, expect a scene as tense as the one we all witnessed in 2006; after all, Oprah did apologize to Frey for shaming him on TV in...

I Am Number Four Directed by: D.J. Caruso Written by: Alfred Gough & Miles Millar, Marti Noxon (Screenplay), Jobie Hughes & James Frey (novel) Starring: Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Dianna Agron I Am Number Four is Number Two. A cheap joke, but it's just what this adolescent stinker deserves. Granted, nigh unwatchable cinematic misfires haunt the calendar's early months, amongst whose company D.J. Caruso's latest foray into teen actioners is admittedly a god among insects. Copping a Michael Bay aesthetic (Bay produces), Number Four does Twilight by way of Transformers. The film is slick, glossy, and absolutely uninteresting. Never mind that these characters are extraterrestrials from the planet Lorien, it's their blatant lapses in logic that seem most alien. After all, the good guys are identical to human beings (the bad guys have facial gills) in all but one key way. Cue our hero's warrior guardian with this hilariously hokey line: "When we love,...

The lonely son of a dying planet, sent out to into the depths of space to protect an alien world, relies on his extraordinary powers and sense of Right and Wrong to protect his new-found home. Sound familiar? I’m talking, of course, about the plot of I Am Number Four, the first book in a series of young-adult science fiction novels written by ‘Pittacus Lore’ (an apparently ‘in-world’ pen name of Jobie Hughes and James Frey), the adaptation of which is shortly to hit cinemas nationwide.
To give credit where it’s due, the film is less Superman-inspired than that vitriolic opening paragraph makes it sound. Alex Pettyfer stars as Number Four, one of nine aliens sent to earth to one day fight against the baby-eatingly evil ‘Mogadorians’ who were responsible for the destruction of Four’s home planet, Lorien. Four lives on earth with his Guardian, Henri (played...

I went into I Am Number Four without any preconceived notions whatsoever. I enjoyed the cryptic trailer, but besides that and the fact that it was directed by D. J. Caruso I wasn’t sure what the flick was gonna deliver. I’m glad I’m not one of those stuffy, pretentious critics that bash everything to make myself sound cool, because the truth is, I Am Number Four delivered on the action and even threw a little romance into the mix.
The flick is based on a novel by Jobie Hughes and James Frey. It tells of a young alien named John (Alex Pettyfer) who came to Earth to escape a race of evil aliens that killed his people. Only, he’s not alone. There are others like him and as they mature they gain powers that can be used to help them fight off the evil aliens. Along with his protector,...

Number Three sure picked a bad time to get nailed by the Mogadorians.
All the Numbered Folk are linked by some strangeness that causes painful though artfully drawn welts to spring up on the limbs of the surviving Numbers if one of them ever gets it. The problem is, Number Four (Alex Pettyfer) was just about to get laid - and then Number Three has to go and die, causing Four's leg to cramp up in agony as this strange welt forms in a blaze of light. Summary: This sci-fi color-by-numbers feels just a little too marketable.
Like its main character, sci-fi teen action flick I Am Number Four has a bit of a troublesome pedigree. The movie's based on a popular young adult novel written by "Pittacus Lore," the pen name shared by authors James Frey and Jobie Hughes. That novel is the first product of James Frey's so-called "fiction factory," Full Fathom Five, whose mission is to manufacture literary phenomena like the Twilight saga. I can't speak for the book, but Number Four's cinematic incarnation is proof that it's hard to sweep the nation on purpose.

Although 'I Am Number Four' is based on a bestselling young-adult book by Pittacus Lore (the fictional pen name of James Frey and Jobie Hughes), there's a chance your tween or teen hasn't read it. If that's the case, what better way to motivate them to read than to promise them a trip to the movies afterward?
What's the story?: The book is told from the perspective of 'Number Four,' an adolescent alien that hails from the planet Lorien. Four, aka John Smith, is one of only nine young aliens (plus their assigned Keepers) who were sent to Earth before Lorien was destroyed by Mogadorians, greedy and sadistic aliens from a neighboring planet. Each of the children possessed special powers, or "Legacies," that would help them live long enough to eventually restore the Lorien race. The chosen nine...

Teen angst, this is my friend, aliens. Aliens, meet my old pal, teen angst. That’s how I imagine the introductions going if, you know, teen angst and aliens were actual people. There are all manner of films about angsty teen vampires, angsty teen werewolves, angsty teen wizards, and, hopefully soon, angsty teen necromancers. It was only a matter of time before someone paired the story of an angsty teen with the drama of an alien invasion. Thinking about it, it seems inevitable, and a little shocking that it hasn’t happen sooner. But happen it does in D.J. Caruso’s (with an assist from Michael Bay) new film “I Am Number Four”. Literary lightning rod James Frey, who famously pissed off Oprah by fabricating most of his memoir (I’m surprised she hasn’t had him ‘disappeared’ yet), decided to dip his fingers into the ever-expanding young adult literary market.

The towheaded Alex Pettyfer sails into theaters this weekend for the first of two theatrical attacks. Our subject for evaluation is I Am Number Four, where fair Mr. Pettyfer finds himself the forth surviving alien superman hiding out on Earth, fighting yet more evil alien monster-thingies coming after him to kill him. Oh and he falls in love with a human girl along the way.
Hey! That’s a plot twist we haven’t seen before.
The trailer, embedded below, shows Pettyfer blasting lightbeams from his hands, walking through fire, levitating cars, and jumping shirtless into large pools of water. I’m thinking that the producers of the movie read my diary, as those are all the kind of things I want to see… either in a movie or in real life. Which means I’m going to be first in line to see the film.
Ah, you ask, but should I be?...
