When the opening scene ended with a pretty cool and gory death, in what was a traditional but fun slasher film build-up, my hopes were kind of high. It feels like we have had very few new slasher movie villains to get excited about. Of course, Michael Myers, Chucky, Ghostface and more are still going strong but other than Art the Clown in the Terrifier franchise, no one seems to have lasted for more than one movie in more recent times. So when Randy Couture is standing tall as Hank, giant axe in hand, things were looking up. But the movie doesn’t quite pan out the way I was expecting.
The Bell Keeper follows a group of friends, including two brothers, who travel to a campsite at Lake Bell.

The American soaps weren’t the only game in town at the 2024 Daytime Emmy nominations, which were announced by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on Friday, April 19. CBS dramas “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “The Young and the Restlesss” led with 12 bids apiece, but tying them at that number was the Netflix anthology series “African Queens: Njinga.” Check out the complete list of nominations here.

Two-time Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins has signed on to star in Eyes in the Trees, a reimagining of H.G. Wells’ The Island of Dr. Moreau, which is co-written by “The Bay” and “Days of Our Lives” actor Mike Manning.
According to Deadline, Hopkins will portray a geneticist who has been isolated after the government stopped funding his research following the violent outbreak of one of his test subjects. Later, two renowned filmmakers and their crew embark on a journey of discovery, only to find their excursion turned into a fight for survival for themselves and the entire human race.

The classic H.G. Wells story The Island of Dr. Moreau has been adapted multiple times in various different ways over the years – I’d personally like to recommend Island of Lost Souls, the classic 1932 adaptation starring Charles Laughton and Bela Lugosi – and Deadline reports that Anthony Hopkins has just come on board to star in the latest adaptation.
Hopkins will star in Eyes in the Trees for director Timothy Woodward Jr., being described as a “reimagining of the classic H.G. Wells novel The Island of Dr. Moreau.”

The 1996 version of The Island of Dr. Moreau, which was directed by John Frankenheimer (who replaced Richard Stanley after half a week of filming), is a well-known disaster, but that was just one of many cinematic adaptations H.G. Wells’ 1896 novel has received over the years. That novel has inspired the 1932 classic Island of Lost Souls, 1959’s Terror Is a Man, 1972’s The Twilight People, a 1977 film that actually kept the The Island of Dr. Moreau title, the Full Moon production Dr. Moreau’s House of Pain, and more. Now we can add another title to the list, as Deadline reports that Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins has signed on to star in the The Island of Dr. Moreau reimagining Eyes in the Trees.

Lightyear Entertainment has acquired U.S. rights to coming-of-age drama “Edge of Everything” from Visit Films. The film stars Sierra McCormick, previously seen in Slamdance award winner “The Vast of Night.”

The drama will have its U.S. premiere on Feb. 8 at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, and a limited theatrical release will follow in the spring, after which the film will be released on digital platforms and in the home entertainment market.
Abby, on the cusp of turning 15 and at a delicate moment in life, is forced to move in with her father and his younger girlfriend (Sabina Friedman-Seitz). Two special episodes of The Bay are coming up next week that give some insights into the characters of Adam Kenway (Kristos Andrews) and Caleb McKinnon (Mike Manning). The show’s current story is put on hold while the action shifts to not only the past but also to Terracina, Italy (a seaside town about an hour outside of Rome), and we have an exclusive first look in the promo above! “This is three years before either [Adam or Caleb] arrived in Bay City,” The Bay executive producer, director, and writer Gregori Martin tells TV Insider. “This is the origin story of Adam and his nefarious ways. John Blackwell has sent a woman to seduce Adam and get some information from him.” Caleb also gets a romantic entanglement, which sets the stage for his coming out. “The story digs into Caleb and why he was afraid to be who he is,” Martin explains.

Here at /Film, we have talked quite a bit about how much we love genre-specific streaming services like Shudder or Alter, but does such a platform exist for fans of science fiction? Sure, there's always the Syfy channel on cable, but with so many people cutting cords and pivoting exclusively to streaming, you may be wondering where to find new and unique sci-fi stories. Well, may we interest you in Dust? A sister site of Alter, Dust comes from the folks at Gunpowder and Sky, the independent studio behind hits like "Summer of 84," "Tragedy Girls," "Her Smell," "Hearts Beat Loud," "Call Me Miss Cleo," and "Kobe Bryant's Dear Basketball."
A hub for the very best in sci-fi short films, Dust also has a live linear channel constantly playing from their selection of shorts, so if you don't feel like wading through the selections, you can let the service choose for you.

"You shouldn't have rang the bell!" Screen Media has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled The Bell Keeper, the latest from young filmmaker Colton Tran. It's heading to VOD in October, yet another new horror film releasing during Halloween Season. A group of friends travel out to a campsite with a mysterious bell that summons a murderer if you ring it at midnight. Their plan to debunk the myth and film a documentary goes awry as they discover that the truth is stranger – and far more frightening – than fiction. What they find is something much more sinister than they could have ever imagined... Starring Randy Couture, Kathleen Kenny, Reid Miller, Chaz Bono, Bonnie Aarons, and Mike Manning. Yeah it looks as bad as it sounds. This used to be the kind of direct-to-bargain-bin crap we'd all laugh at. My guess: they'll turn into demons, Couture is just slaying the demons.

He has help from his AA sponsor and his best friend but when a new guy enters his life full of promises and seemingly good advice, he can’t help in becoming a little infatuated. And this infatuation leads to some unwanted situations in this psychological thriller.
The Way Out comes from Terror Films, a company I generally enjoy but my general expectations are that their movies will be low-budget, sometimes amateur, horror movies that I will mostly have fun with. So The Way Out stuck out like a sore thumb immediately by just looking good and having clearly experienced actors in the lead roles. The performances are strong from...

Bianca D'Ambrosio, August Maturo, Mirabelle Lee and Chiara D'Ambrosio in Slapface
Lucas (August Maturo) has lost his parents. He’s being looked after by his older brother Tom (Mike Manning), who is ill-equipped at cope and takes out his own stress by bullying him, so he seeks refuge in the woods, where he befriends a monster. Beautifully shot and beautifully played, Slapface captures the magic of a Spielberg film, only to transform into something emotionally devastating. It screened at Frightfest 2021 and is now getting a release on Shudder, which prompted me to discuss it with director Jeremiah Kipp.
I might not have caught Slapface at Frightfest were it not for the urging of Julie Kauffman, whose documentary The Brilliant Terror explores grassroots filmmaking. She had been really impressed by Jeremiah’s work, so I ask him how he felt about that film.

Writer/director Jeremiah Kipp has expanded his short, also titled Slapface, into feature-length; which, as with any short, is a risky undertaking. What works at fifteen or twenty minutes may be drawn out and dull at ninety. Changes to the plot may ruin the mood or message of the original. That’s even more true for something like Slapface which relied heavily on feeling and emotion.
Lucas and Tom lost their parents in a car accident, leaving Tom an unprepared and somewhat unwilling guardian for his younger brother. He would much rather be at the bar with Anna than be at home, or at work for that matter. This leaves Lucas on his own a lot and he spends his time wandering around the woods and getting into trouble with the cops,...

"What happened?" "Did you see it?" Shudder has revealed the official trailer for Slapface, an indie horror film landing on the streaming service this February. It originally premiered last year at the Cinequest Film Festival and FrightFest, also stopping by Grimmfest and the Razor Reel Flanders Film Festival in Belgium. A boy deals with the loss of his mother by creating a dangerous relationship with a monster rumored to live in the woods. When the two reach a tentative trust, a bizarre friendship is born, and Lucas is swept up in a series of primal adventures. The film stars August Maturo as Lucas, with Mike Manning, Dan Hedaya, Mirabelle Lee, Lukas Hassel, Libe Barer, Bianca D’Ambrosio, and Chiara D'Ambrosio. This won the Audience Award at Cinequest, and looks like a thrilling little horror film with a good twist in the story. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Jeremiah Kipp's Slapface,...

“You understand why we have to do this,” says Tom, hitting his little brother in the face.
Tom (Mike Manning) has been legally responsible for Lucas (August Maturo) ever since the death of their parents. Deprived of his family and future in one fell swoop, he works in a manual job, drinks in the local bar and tries to suppress his rage and grief so that he can provide the care the kid needs. Naturally, Lucas is also traumatised and would be a handful even for an experienced adult. He disappears for hours on end, he refuses to listen, he smashes things up and he engages in strange rituals, longing to reconnect with his mother somehow. So Tom, not knowing what else to do, hits him in the face, and Lucas hits back, and each uses an open hand and Tom never uses his full strength, but still, he’s doing damage.

On the surface, from its pure and simple, monster-in-the-woods logline, Slapface might sound like another Blair Witch, Slender Man-esque urban legend chiller waiting to happen. Lots of creeping, twig-snapping tension, mysterious whispers in the forest, and a plethora of halloween mask-lead visuals that you might assume will eventually play out like any other cheap Blumhouse clone. It’s a solemn surprise then that the reality is anything but.
Slapface, after all, isn’t the monster, but a highly sinister game, played by two recently-orphaned brothers, struggling to make ends-meet, now on their own in a secluded house on the margins of society. The older Tom (Mike Manning), has turned to drinking to feed his grief, while the much younger Lucas (Girl Meets World’s August Maturo), struggles with loneliness, spending his days wandering the woods, trying (and failing) to escape local bullies.
The only way the boys can connect it seems,...

There's something of a fad, in the early years of the 2020s, for making films set in and styled like the 1980s, and few have captured that era quite as well as this energetic teen horror tale from Timothy Woodward Jr. From the elaborate make-up to the pulsing synthesizer score to the lofty moral tone of its most brutal scenes, it's a film which draws heavily on nostalgia and on the borrowed memories of a generation of viewers who were not born the first time around.
The protagonists, of course, are themselves teenagers. Quiet, withdrawn Chris (Chester Rushing) is the new boy in town, weighed down by a secret from his past. Tonya (Erin Sanders) is queen bee at his new high school, oozing confidence and glamour yet haunted by the disappearance, so years previously, of her younger sister. Together with her ex-boyfriend Zack (Mike Manning) and his younger brother Brett.
