John Le Carre, a former British intelligence agent and perhaps the most celebrated spy novelist of all time, says he wouldn’t be surprised if the Russians have dirt on President Trump. Le Carre’s comments came during a conversation with The New York Times and nonfiction writer Ben Macintyre, whose recent work focuses on British espionage. The subject turned to whether they believe Russia has blackmail material, or kompromat, against the president. It’s Obi-Wan versus Fidel! Well, not really. The pre-Bond espionage genre lights up with cool intrigues and comic absurdities, as a Brit vacuum salesman in Havana is recruited to spy for Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The filmmakers and stars are all top caliber, and the location is legendary: Castro’s Cuba, immediately after the revolution.

For a man whose first claim to screen immortality came when an extraterrestrial freak of nature ripped a hole in his chest and screeched bloody murder in Alien, John Hurt was a hell of an actor. "The alien won the Oscar," a laughing Hurt told me nearly three decades later, referring to the Academy Award that Ridley Scott's 1979 film took home for H.R. Giger's visual effects. It might be the only time in his 55-year career that anyone, let alone a creature that looked like a penis with teeth,...

It’s been a kaleidoscopic and crazy week, stuffed with meetings and showcases, holiday receptions, and random conversations across what I like to call the Golden Triangle, the Westside Los Angeles neighborhoods and suburbs where startups and tech giants, social-media influencers, and new kinds of entertainment companies are haphazardly creating a New Hollywood, and a new relationship between creators and fans.
At the same time, I’m seeing more of Old Hollywood – if not all of it – starting to figure out how to live with the new stars, platforms, and business models. It’s been a messy transformation, but it’s been damned fun to watch.
For instance, I met with my friends at RelishMix, which advises networks and studios about the social-media conversation around their films and TV shows. Too often, RelishMix will find the majority of the cast on a film is “not socially active,” with little or no social-media presence.

A version of this story on Hugh Laurie also appears in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine. “The Night Manager” is a quietly gripping six-hour British miniseries that aired on AMC and landed a dozen Emmy nominations, including nods for Tom Hiddleston as the title character, Hugh Laurie as a suave arms dealer and Olivia Colman as the dogged British agent determined to bring him down. But it didn’t have an easy path from the pages of John Le Carre‘s 1993 novel to the screen. Le Carre’s novel, about a hotel manager drawn into a shadowy world of.

10. “The Night Manager”
It took Oscar-winning filmmaker Susanne Bier to finally bring John Le Carre’s espionage thriller to life, and boy, did she ever. The miniseries was striking in every way, from the global locales and picturesque hotels to the way characters were displayed upon such backdrops. More than just eye candy, Tom Hiddleston as soldier-turned-spy Jonathan Pine was a man with a mission, quietly stoic in the face of his nemesis Richard Roper, played with dangerous glee by Hugh Laurie. Olivia Colman brought the heart, Elizabeth Debicki the heartache and Tom Hollander a sense of impotent rage. The storytelling was large in scale yet intimate in how it played out, and it’s no wonder that viewers are hoping for more, even though Le Carre never wrote a sequel.

Spy thriller The Night Manager starring Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie premieres on AMC in the U.S. tonight, though it premiered in the U.K. in February. The six-episode miniseries based on the John Le Carre novel of the same name follows the story of a luxury hotel night manager who is recruited to infiltrate an arms dealer's network. Here, Roth Cornet and Alicia Malone talk with director Susanne Bier about adapting the classic novel for a modern audience that is very attuned to the tropes of the genre; whether Tom Hiddleston should be the next Bond; her energetic creative process with Laurie; why female directors aren't approaching Kathleen Kennedy to helm a Star Wars movie; and if there should be a separate category for male and female directors at the Academy Awards. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has often been criticised for its weak villains. Hope was high for the likes of The Mandarin, Red Skull, Malekith, Whiplash, Ronan, Ultron, etc. but it has only been Tom Hiddleston's Loki and Sebastian Stan's Winter Soldier that seem to have been truly embraced by fans.
This week though, chatting with The Daily Beast, Hiddleston revealed that he's seemingly retiring his sinister Asgardian role with the upcoming "Thor: Ragnarok" to be his last time: "Thor 3 will be cool because I've not done it for four years. I love working with Chris [Hemsworth]. This will be my last time out of the gate."
So does that mean he's not a part of the "Avengers: Infinity War" saga? The actor says he doesn't know and indicates Marvel hasn't decided either: "I don't know! Honestly, I don't know. They haven't got their ducks in a row yet.

Talks are underway for a second season of the BBC-amc spy thriller "The Night Manager" starring Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Colman and Hugh Laurie.
Scoring stellar reviews and strong ratings out of the United Kingdom, and set to launch on AMC in the U.S. on April 19th, the $28.7 million six-episode first season was helmed by Susanne Bier ("In a Better world") and penned by David Farr.
An adaptation of John Le Carre's novel, Hiddleston plays a former British Soldier who infiltrates the inner circle of arms dealer Richard Onslow Roper (Hugh Laurie) to uncover Roper’s unholy alliance with the West’s intelligence community.
The series aired on BBC One to eight million viewers - beating out rival ITV's "Doctor Thorne" series launch. Talks with the lead producers, Le Carre's sons Simon and Stephen Cornwell, for another six-episode season have reportedly reached "an advanced stage".

A troubling hush seems to follow Anton Corbijn’s fourth and least enthusiastically received Life, a snapshot on the short but intensely felt celebrity of actor James Dean revolving around a famed photo shoot for the titular magazine administered by Dennis Stock. Considering the film stars Dane DeHaan and Robert Pattinson in the lead roles, the lukewarm reception of the film seems surprising, beginning with a muted response at the premiere at the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival, where it played as a Special Gala Screening. Based on the film’s marketing and demure DVD release, one would be surprised to note Us distributor Cinedigm collected a titch over one million in box office following a limited theatrical and VOD release in December of 2015.

Author John Le Carre provided the basis for the exceptionally cast Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy a few years ago, and that trend is continuing with upcoming adaptations of his work. The Night Manager, which stars Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie, looks fantastic, but this new trailer for Our Kind of Traitor looks just as good (if not better), and it features a cast that includes Ewan McGregor, Naomie Harris, Damian Lewis, Stellan Skarsgard, and Sherlock's Mark Gatiss.
McGregor plays a professor who gets caught in a web of international espionage, and it looks like a terrific little thriller that will scratch the itch of anyone yearning for an adult spy drama. The movie has a May 6th release date in the U.K., but Lionsgate hasn't set a U.S. release date yet. We'll keep you posted.

Audiences just can’t get enough of spies, it seems: last year saw a wealth of different super-agents on screen, from long-running heroes James Bond and Ethan Hunt, to fresher faces from “Kingsman: The Secret Service” and “Spy,” to Oscar nominee “Bridge Of Spies,” and mostly with great success financially. This year is a little quieter, but not by much, with “The Brothers Grimsby” and “Jason Bourne” among those on the way, we’re also seeing a resurgence of one of the kings of the genre, author John Le Carre. The success of “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” a few years ago made the veteran author hot again, and surprisingly strong box office for “A Most Wanted Man” helped to, so we’re soon to get a couple more. First up is Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie in miniseries adaptation “The Night Manager,” and soon to follow is big-screen outing “Our Kind Of Traitor,...

Or Something Like It: Corbijn Resurrects Dean Without a Cause
Following his 2014 John Le Carre adaptation A Man Most Wanted, director Anton Corbijn delves into the life of another desired individual, cherished cinematic icon James Dean with Life. Focusing on the behind-the-scenes relationship between Dean and photographer Dennis Stock during the creation of a belabored, but eventually fruitful 1955 photo shoot for the titular magazine, Luke Davies’ screenplay falls short of showcasing any kind of notable bond potentially worth documenting.
Two artists come together for what would eventually become a particularly notable moment for them both and Corbijn does a fine job of catching the significance of changing times. Dean exhibits the sort of Beat sensibility that had revived a new generation’s interest in literature the decade prior, and Corbijn catches him just at the cusp of the stardom that would possess the public’s attention. But neither persona manages...

This morning's "Better Call Saul" panel isn't the first time Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould have come to press tour to discuss the "Breaking Bad" prequel, but their panel back at summer tour was incredibly light on details and didn't feature any actors. So this session — featuring Gilligan, Gould, "Breaking Bad" alums Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks, plus fellow "Saul" castmembers Michael McKean, Rhea Seehorn, Patrick Fabian and Michael Mando — should be much livelier, and not just because critics have now seen the first two "Saul" episodes(*). (*) Reviews are embargoed until closer to the Feb. 8 premiere, but I can say that I enjoyed both episodes, even though I have some reservations. As I did in the summer, I'll be live-blogging the panel as frequently as my fingers and the ballroom wifi will allow, so check back frequently for updates. (And I'll be doing the same in a little bit for...

★☆☆☆☆ The Green Prince (2014) is the fantastical story of Mosab Hassan Yousef, the son of Hassan Yousef one of the founders of Hamas; who was an informant for the Israeli internal secret service Shin Bet for more than 10 years until his escape to America and a conversion to Christianity. Here lies an intriguing story that calls to mind John Le Carre at his murky best, yet what we are given is the self justification and propaganda of a trio of ideologues: Mosab Hassan Yousef, his handler Gonen Ben-Itzhak (a man who was fired from the Shin Bet years ago for lying and financial mismanagement, a topic conveniently not alluded to in the film) and lastly the Israeli filmmaker Nadav Schirman.

There seems to be a new interest in the works of premiere spy-master John Le Carre. Recent years have seen the release of a number of Le Carre adaptations, from a new version of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy to the recent A Most Wanted Man, with Philip Seymour Hoffman. Now, Le Carre’s work is moving back to the small screen in the form of a limited TV series based on The Night Manager, and Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston have signed on to star.

Exclusive: British Egyptian actor Khalid Abdalla talks new film venue in Egypt.
British Egyptian actor Khalid Abdalla (The Kite Runner, United 93), in Toronto with the premiere screenings of Danis Tanovic’s Tigers and Tala Hadid’s The Narrow Frame of Midnight, is one of the driving forces behind a new cinematheque in Cairo.
‘Cimateque’ [Cima being the Egyptian slang for cinema], currently under construction, will include an 80- seater cinema, 8 and 16mm labs, library, digital archive, DVD library and cafeteria. The hub will host screenings, workshops and events throughout the year.
“Filmmaking courses and scriptwriting programmes have already taken place,” Abdalla explained to Screen. “This will be a base from which to host activities in Cairo and beyond”.

The stakes are surprisingly low in Anton Corbijn's latest effort A Most Wanted Man; a skewed take of the war on terror and the complexities of institutions and stateless beings. The film, set in the wintry German city of Hamburg, purposely keeps it low key, slowly reaching its clinical conclusion in just over two hours with barely an eyebrow raised. The film shoots for realism, achieving it ten-fold; this is, after all, a John Le Carre adaptation. Boorish sector administration and hushed conversations can only carry a film so far, however, and the results of this muted screenplay ensure a safely disappointing ride. The late Philip Seymour Hoffman is on-point as Gunther, a troubled anti-terrorist agent who runs a small group of dull spies comprised of actors...

This Friday should have been a cause for celebration: the release of "A Most Wanted Man," an adaptation of John Le Carre's novel by one of our favorite working filmmakers, Anton Corbijn ("Control," "The American"), and starring one of our finest working actors, Philip Seymour Hoffman. Instead, it's a bittersweet occasion: as we all know, Hoffman heartbreakingly passed away in February, only a few weeks after the film premiered at Sundance (as well as "God's Pocket," which was released a few months back). It was the last film that Hoffman saw to completion: he was in production on what will turn out to be his very final pictures, the two-part finale to "The Hunger Games" series, when he passed. It's all too easy to get choked about one of our final opportunities to see Hoffman do what he did best—Lord knows, every time we've caught a trailer or similar,...

As we arrive at the end of July with just one month to go in the summer, this weekend is going to be one more test of whether starpower makes a difference when it comes to box office hits as we have two action movies featuring top stars as well as a smaller box office comedy starring two Oscar-winning actors who have never appeared in a movie together, although both of them may be considered past their prime.
Before we get to that, Scarlett Johansson stars as the title character in French action director Luc Besson's sci-fi action thriller Lucy (Universal), which co-stars Morgan Freeman in his third movie of the year.
This week's "Chosen One" is Anton Corbijn's adaptation of John Le Carée's post-humous spy thriller A Most Wanted Man (Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions), starring the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, Willem Dafoe and Robin Wright.

Next week, one of just two more performances from the late Philip Seymour Hoffman arrives in theaters in Anton Corbijn's quiet, stirring spy thriller A Most Wanted Man. We've already seen the great trailer (I saw the film at Sundance and loved it), but now we get a look behind the scenes, where we get to enjoy what little unseen footage we have of Hoffman still alive and making great movies. Time debuted the featurette, and in it we also learn that Corbijn wanted Hoffman, before he passed away, to have a role in his forthcoming film Life starring Robert Pattinson and Dane DeHaan, but we'll never see it happen now. At least we get to enjoy this fantastic performance from an actor who is missed more everyday. Watch below! Here's the new featurette for Anton Corbijn's A Most Wanted Man, originally from Time: There's an awesome piece...

It's truly tragic to think that audiences only have two more Philip Seymour Hoffman performances to look forward to following the upsetting death of the actor earlier this year. He'll return as Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part I this fall, but next month everyone should go see A Most Wanted Man. This quiet, understated thriller features a stirring performance from a grizzled and perpetually smoking Hoffman as he leads a covert German intelligence organization tasked with hunting spies. It's the perfect slow-burning spy thriller, and a new trailer from across the pond has arrived. Watch!
