Exclusive: Fox has set Peter Chelsom to direct The Boy Who Knew Too Much, an adaptation of the memoir Cathy Byrd wrote about her son. From about the age of 2, Christian Haupt began an obsession with baseball, insisting on wearing a baseball uniform and talking about his experiences of being a pro ballplayer in the 1920s and ’30s, only to have his career cut short and dying soon after. The youth, who’s considered a baseball prodigy, convinced his family that in that former life he was Hall of Fame New York Yankees slugging first baseman Lou Gehrig. DeVon Franklin is producing the film.
Byrd, a residential real estate broker whose family had no association with baseball, was moved to write a book that was published by Hay House in May 2017. It was picked up by the studio and Franklin, the producer and preacher who has generated such faith-based hits...

Last Friday, my pal Larry Hama invited me to a “friends and family” screening of the first two episodes of Marvel’s The Defenders. I mean the new series debuting on Netflix today, not the classic television show, The Defenders, the source of many many jokes made during the screening.
Also in attendance: Tony Isabella, Michael Gaydos and his adorable son, Arvell Jones, and the families of Archie Goodwin and George Tuska. Plus a bunch of current Marvel folks who had probably already seen the whole series, but who were gracious hosts.
Before the screening began, I was feeling pretty warm and fuzzy about seeing so many of my old friends and meeting people whose work I admired. Hence, I was psyched to enjoy two hours in a comfy chair in a screening room.
Mostly, I had a great time. I have a huge crush on Charlie Cox, the beautiful man who plays Matt Murdock.

Given the genre cred of Simon Pegg and the ascendance of Rosamund Pike, I approached Hector and the Search for Happiness with a certain level of curiosity. I was unfamiliar with the original novel by French author Francois Lelord and somehow missed the film’s release back in September. 20th Century Home Entertainment resolved that with the release today of the film on DVD.
In short, the film is about a psychiatrist, Hector (Pegg), who wants to shake up his tedious life. He doesn’t feel like he’s good at his job or able to help people, and laments to his girlfriend Clara (Pike) that he has yet to sample the very experience he recommends to his clients. As a result, he goes walkabout, seeking to taste life and find happiness. Then things happen.
It’s a charming premise and certainly well-trod territory but one expects, well, more from the story,...

Hector and the Search for Happiness
Directed by Peter Chelsom
Written by Peter Chelsom, Tinker Lindsay, and Maria von Heland
USA, 2014
There’s a burgeoning subgenre of films about people in existential crisis setting out on a globe spanning adventure to find themselves, to figure out how to really live. These movies are ostensibly inspirational, but for several reasons, they often play out as somewhat depressing. For one thing, they seem to suggest that all it takes to feel alive is a costly globe-spanning adventure. Even more troublingly, they tend to turn the problems and wonders of the rest of the world into just more glib lessons for their heroes to learn. To the ranks of films like Eat, Pray, Love and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, we can now add Hector and the Search for Happiness.

There is not a cynical or mean-spirited moment in Peter Chelsom's new film "Hector and the Search For Happiness," and the film's observations about life are in some ways so direct, so fundamental, that it would be easy to shrug it off and laugh at its sincerity. Happiness is a subject I've been thinking about quite a bit this year. At 44, I find it elusive, temporary. I've upended my life this year, moving out of my house, negotiating a divorce, building a new life to share with my kids, and even exploring the notion of new love, and all of it has been life-altering and shattering and scary and exhilarating, and above all else, necessary. Completely and totally necessary. When I was a young man, I saw happiness as something that landed on you, something that was simply a by-product of living life. I took happiness for granted, and...

Simon Pegg tackles the meaning of life as the eponymous wanderer and/or wonderer in an adaptation of a book by French psychiatrist François Lelord. Hector and the Search for Happiness is part fable, part self-help manual with echoes of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, but like that film, there's a considerable gap between its deeply profound objective and the soft handling.
Hector is subject to gentle teasing for taking life too seriously, but he isn't a purely comic character and that's unfortunate for Pegg who usually gets laughs playing pompous idiots. He's much less compelling being moody and teary-eyed, especially because he doesn't have much to complain about. Hector is a successful psychiatrist who lives in a plush London home with a lovely girlfriend,...

Ben Stiller went searching for a more satisfying existence in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and now it's Simon Pegg's turn Hector and the Search for Happiness, a new film slated to hit the United Kingdom this fall. In the film Pegg plays a psychiatrist who can't seem to help his patients, and just feels like something in his life is missing. And so, Hector sets out to find out to find true happiness, wherever it may be in the world. This looks charming, and like something completely different for Pegg outside of the realm of sci-fi, action and comedy. But The World's End actress Rosamund Pike is still here for good measure. Peter Chelsom will direct the movie from a script he co-wrote with Tinker Lindsay, but I’m sure you already know that the whole thing is actually an adaptation of Francis Lelord‘s novel of the same name. As we said, the film will center on Hector, an eccentric...

If you follow esteemed (and occasionally steam-driven) thespian type Simon Pegg on Twitter, you’ll already know that Toni Collette is aboard rom-com Hector And The Search For Happiness. But Deadline’s story at least breaks the news that Jean Reno, Stellan Skarsgård, Desiree Zurowski and Jakob Davies have all joined the cast. The film, which already boasts Pegg, Rosamund Pike and Christopher Plummer, is shooting now in Canada under the direction of Peter Chelsom. Pegg plays the titular Hector, an eccentric London psychiatrist who hits a crisis when he can’t help any of his patients to get any happier and decides to go off on a search for the secret of happiness.Pike will be Hector’s girlfriend, while Plummer is aboard to play a UCLA professor who specialises in Happiness Studies. Not much is known about the other roles, though Davies is apparently playing Hector as a lad.

It always helps a film being touted for sale at the Cannes Film Market when it has a big name attached in the lead. Luckily for Peter Chelsom’s next project, Hector And The Search For Happiness, it has nabbed the services of one Simon Pegg.Chelsom worked with Tinker Lindsay to adapt the script from Francois Lelord’s bestseller. The plot focuses on an unusual but personable London psychiatrist (Pegg), who is facing a professional struggle because his patients just don’t seem to be getting any happier. So he sets off on his own mission to find a little joy.Chelsom seems convinced he’s found his next gig and his man. "I've been searching long and hard for a film that would bring me back to my European sensibilities. Not unlike Being There and Forrest Gump, Hector is a contemporary love story, a fable wrapped around a very human hero's journey,...

We’re next going to see mega-talent multi-hyphenate funnyman Simon Pegg have “a fantastic fear of everything” in, uh, a film called A Fantastic Fear of Everything, but he’ll soon go on a “search for happiness” in a film called, you guessed it, Hector and The Search for Happiness (ha, fooled you!). Of course, Pegg also has both the Star Trek sequel and The World’s End lined up before that (and, oh, thank heaven for that), but this is a news piece about Search for Happiness, so here we go. News from Cannes (told you to get used to it) announces that Pegg will star in Peter Chelsom‘s (Serendipity, Shall We Dance, and yow! Hannah Montana: The Movie) film, billed as a “drama comedy” (perhaps a “dramedy”?) about a wacky London psychiatrist. Chelsom has adapted the film’s script with Tinker Lindsay from the bestselling novel by François Lelord. The...
