“The Pact” exceeded my expectations. I honestly had never heard of this film until I was doing a search for horror films during that particular year and decided to give this unnoticed film a shot. I am glad I did. I was expecting a rather predictable haunted house flick that turned out to be . . . the exact opposite of what I thought would happen. Upon research, I found out this film had a good reception at a festival and then the director was given a shot to make it “again” with a better budget. This is one of the better horror...

When thinking of recent horror movie sequels garnering minimal demand, The Pact II could be one of the most prominent examples. I don’t care much for Nicholas McCarthy’s original 2012 haunter, a film that only made waves throughout hardcore genre communities, but such an under-the-radar lifespan didn’t stop a sequel from being greenlit – without the involvement of Nicholas McCarthy himself. Placed in the hands of co-directors Dallas Richard Hallam (Entrance) and Patrick Horvath (Die-ner), the Judas Killer lives once again in The Pact II, a direct sequel that strikes an impressively similar tone to McCarthy’s chilling signature style. My problems with the first film never complained about scares, though, only convoluted storytelling more focused on atmosphere than comprehension. Do Hallam and Horvath learn from McCarthy’s weaker notes? Yes and no – but we’ll get to that shortly.

Heading for release in U.S. theaters on October 10, The Pact 2 picks up where Nicholas McCartney's unsettling horror thriller left off. In the first film, Caity Lopez starred as Annie, a troubled young woman who came home for her mother's funeral. She discovered that "home," or, more specifically, the house itself, harbored very troubling things. Now, in The Pact 2 ... A series of brutal murders lead authorities to believe the Judas killer is back and Annie (Caity Lotz, Arrow, Mad Men) returns home for the final showdown. The film, directed by Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath, also stars Camilla Luddington (Grey's Anatomy), Scott Michael Foster (Halt and Catch Fire, Greek), Patrick Fischler (2 Guns, Mad Men, Californication), and Haley Hudson (The Pact).Distributed by IFC Midnight,...

Arriving this September on VOD is Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvat's horror sequel 'The Pact 2'. A small selection of new stills from the production have emerged, three of which are fairly unremarkable but do have the bonus of featuring the gorgeous leading duo Camilla Luddington ('True Blood') and Caity Lotz ('The Machine'). The fourth bringing along a lot more creepiness of what we should expect. 'The Pact 2' will also receive a theatrical release on 10 October. The sequel also stars Scott Michael Foster ('Zero Hour'), Patrick Fischler ('Lost'), Haley Hudson ('Freaky Friday') and Mark Steger ('I Am Legend'). Check out the new pics below....

The Pact
Stars: Caity Lotz, Casper Van Dien, Agnes Bruckner, Haley Hudson | Written and Directed by Nicholas McCarthy
There’s nothing wrong with a film not being groundbreaking, particularly in the horror genre, and Nicholas McCarthy’s The Pact certainly isn’t. And that’s not a problem if you do all the stereotypes well, and give your audience a good scare.
Following the death of her abusive mother, Nicole (Bruckner) returns to her childhood home to sort through her mother’s things. The following morning, her sister Annie (Lotz) very reluctantly joins her, but Nicole is nowhere to be found, and shortly after arriving, their cousin Liz also goes missing. What follows is Annie’s search for her sister and the secrets she uncovers along the way. Based on McCarthy’s own short, the film doesn’t set out with the intention of doing anything different with the genre.

Now the British summer has made a belated reappearance, we can expect a few downsides such as hay fever, sunburn and insect bites - but no flying pests in our gardens can rival Dragon Wasps. And a can of the standard repellent probably won't do much good either.
This giant creature feature is written by Mark Atkins. Title: The Pact Director: Nicholas McCarthy Starring: Caity Lotz, Casper Van Dien, Agnes Bruckner, Haley Hudson, Kathleen Rose Perkins, Mark Steger A horror movie in only the loosest sense, writer-director Nicholas McCarthy’s “The Pact” is actually more of a psychologically rooted chiller, in which the dark, repressed memories of a turbulent and unhappy childhood come bubbling to the surface. Whether its disturbing twists are meant to be taken literally or as intense manifestations of trauma is a matter of debate up until the final reel, and then even afterward. Following their estranged mother’s death, Nicole (Agnes) leans on her sister Annie (Caity Lotz) to return to their childhood home and help [ Read More ]...

Seasoned horror fans generally know what to expect from a haunted house movie these days. The protagonist or family with a troubled past moves into a house where tragic events have occurred years before. At some point, a creepy old woman/child/bald corpse pops up in the bathroom mirror to scare the crap out of us.
The Pact appears initially to fit this mold. Fortunately, the story diverges from the formula in an interesting way.
Two young women return to their childhood home to attend their mother's funeral. Neither has fond memories of the mom, whose strict approach to parenting has adversely affected them as adults.
Troubled Nicole (Agnes Bruckner) is first to arrive at the now vacant house. She hears strange noises and begins to suspect that she is not alone.

Title: The Pact Director: Nicolas McCarthy Starring: Caity Lotz (TV’s ‘Mad Men’), Casper Van Dien (‘Born to Ride,’ TV’s ‘Monk) and Haley Hudson (‘Marley and Me,’ ‘Freaky Friday’) Manipulating imagery and using psychological antics to motive characters are some of the most frightening elements in the horror genre. Scribe and helmer Nicholas McCarthy, who made his feature film writing and directing debut with the new IFC Films horror mystery thriller ‘The Pact,’ successfully used those elements in his first movie. Instead of just focusing on psychical scares, the filmmaker also effectively implemented emotions and relationships to drive the plot forward. ‘The Pact’ follows the independent and strong-willed Annie (played by [ Read More ]...

The Pact

Written by Nicholas McCarthy
USA, 2012
Chances are, you’ve probably seen a film like The Pact. But, conversely, chances are you’ve never seen it done quite like this. Although bereft of groundbreaking originality or genre epiphanies, Nicholas McCarthy’s modern take on the haunted house horror picture manages to use these tropes in a way that allows his film to transcend, albeit nominally, above the commonplace drivel of his contemporaries. Well-crafted, competently acted, and with methodical attention to pacing, The Pact is an insidious exercise in atmosphere.
Following the death of her mother, Annie (Caity Lotz) is persuaded by her sister (Agnes Bruckner) to return to their childhood home so they can mourn as a family. Once there, however, Annie discovers that her sister no longer is. The forewarn situation is compounded when things take a turn for the paranormal, culminating in her...

Director/writer: Nicholas McCarthy. Cast: Caity Lotz, Casper Van Dien, Agnes Bruckner, Mark Steger, Haley Hudson, Kathleen Rose Perkins, and Sam Ball. The Pact is Nicholas McCarthy's first feature. The story here is based on a short film of the same name that debuted at Sundance in 2011. The short has been expanded upon with some casting changes. Caity Lotz stars as Annie; she is a woman returning to her birthplace. Her mother has recently died and the funeral leads to some mysterious disappearances. McCarthy then plays with genres as the film begins as a supernatural mystery that shifts to a serial killer thriller. Both of these genres are set in one very haunted house. The story begins with Nichole (Agnes Bruckner) who returns for the funeral first. She talks with her daughter on Skype late one night only to see mysterious shapes out of the corner of her eye.

If I was to ever be the star of a ghost story it would be the shortest story in history, because the minute I heard an eerie noise or noticed the room getting colder, I would get the hell out of dodge. Thankfully this doesn't happen in movies as it would be a waste of a ticket. Now that that thinly veiled attempt to gloss over the fact that I had no real introduction to this review is out of the way, lets talk about The Pact. Returning to her childhood home for her mother's funeral, Annie (Caity Lotz) discovers a ghostly presence inhabits the house. Already responsible for the disappearance of her sister, it begins to terrorise Annie. Enlisting the help of a detective (Casper Van Dien) and a medium (Haley Hudson), Annie is determined to get to the bottom of what is happening. Making his feature film debut,...

Things of an unexplainable nature go bump in the night in this effective little Us chiller which proves there’s still mileage left in the haunted house set-up without resorting to using the found footage or single-take machinations.
Nicole, the eldest daughter of a recently deceased woman, moves back into the family home whilst making arrangements for her estranged mother’s funeral. Tempted into a closet upstairs one evening after hearing noises from within it, she appears, inexplicably, to go missing somewhere within the house.
The following day, her younger sister Annie (Caity Lotz) arrives with both her cousin and Nicole’s young daughter to find the house empty and with no trace of her sister. That night, the girl’s cousin also disappears under mysterious circumstances. Determined to unearth what is happening in her childhood home, Annie is attacked by an invisible entity. That isn’t the only presence...

Horror frequently proves to be one of cinema’s most frustrating and difficult-to-master genres, such that when we happen to stumble across an even half-way decent entry, it tends to warrant attention. The Pact, a slow-burning investigative poltergeist pic, serves best as a calling card for director Nicholas McCarthy, who somewhat balances out his weaknesses as a writer with a strong visual instinct and knack for atmosphere.
From practically minute one, all of the above becomes clear; the film is shot in a meticulous, almost grimly painterly style, but is sloppy when handling exposition, self-consciously doling out all the pre-requisites over a phone conversation. Annie (Caity Lotz) has arrived back in town to visit her deceased mother’s house and family home, as her sister, Nicole (Agnes Bruckner), has disappeared, seemingly without a trace. Soon enough, Annie discovers that a troublesome family secret holds the key to her whereabouts.
