What do an ogre, a clownfish, a rat, a wooden toy and a robot have in common? They’ve all been the stars of Academy Award-winning films for Best Animated Feature.
Film animation has come a long way since pioneering films such as Walt Disney‘s “Steamboat Willie” (1928) captured the hearts and imagination of a loyal public, making characters like Mickey Mouse a permanent and beloved part of our pop culture. But these films have had a harder time gaining recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 1939, at the 11th awards ceremony, Disney received special recognition for “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” the first ever feature-length animated film, and was bestowed one full-size statuette and seven miniature ones. Two years later, Disney would receive the first competitive Oscars given for an animated film, with “Pinocchio” winning Best Original Score and Best Original Song for “When You Wish Upon a Star.

It’s a case of one score to rule them all, as Howard Shore’s stirring epic soundtrack for The Lord of the Rings trilogy was voted the U.K.’s favorite movie music.
Shore’s score for the Rings film, which has won three Academy Awards, three Golden Globes and four Grammys, came out ahead of some of the greatest and most recognizable soundtracks of all time, including John Williams’ music for Schindler’s List and Star Wars, which came second and third respectively.
The list of the top 100 film scores was compiled by popular U.K. radio station Classic FM, as part of their annual Movie Music Hall of Fame. More than 10,000 people voted for this year’s edition and the winner was revealed on Sunday by Jonathan Ross, the former presenter of the BBC’s Film program.

Plot: A deadly female assassin comes out of hiding to protect the daughter that she gave up years before, while on the run from dangerous men.
Review: Since it was first announced over a year ago, I have been mildly intrigued by The Mother. With a mysterious plot featuring Jennifer Lopez as a vengeful parent, I expected this film to be a cookie-cutter action replica of John Wick and the myriad spin-offs and copycats it has spawned. Instead, this film benefits from having a gritty but realistic plot that is accentuated by bursts of violence. With a solid director and the burgeoning talent of writer Misha Green, The Mother is a solid throwback thriller that echoes the action flicks of the late 1990s. With some brutal violence and engaging character development, The Mother is a better offering than the hit-or-miss fare churned out by the Netflix machine.

American computer-animated musical fantasy comedy film ‘Encanto’ clinched 3 honours at the 65th edition of the Grammy Awards. The album won Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media and Best Song Written for Visual Media for the song ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’. The film’s music was done by Germaine Franco.
Franco became the first woman to score a Disney animated feature film with ‘Encanto’. Franco, who is of Mexican American descent, began composing as a student at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, where she graduated in 1984.
‘Encanto’ follows a multigenerational Colombian family, the Madrigals, led by a matriarch whose children and grandchildren, except for Mirabel Madrigal, receive magical gifts from a miracle that helps them serve the people in their rural community called the Encanto.
The 65th annual Grammy Awards are being held at the Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles.

Female composers are shining bright at the 2023 Grammys.
Germaine Franco won best score soundtrack for visual media for composing Encanto, telling the audience she believes she’s the first woman of color to take home the honor.
That was followed by Stephanie Economou’s win for best score soundtrack for video games and other interactive media — a new award at the Grammys. Economou earned the honor for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok.
Franco and Economou were the solo female nominees in their categories.
Franco beat out Hans Zimmer (No Time to Die), Jonny Greenwood (The Power of the Dog), Nicholas Britell (Succession: Season 3) and Michael Giacchino (The Batman). Economou edged out Bear McCreary (Call of Duty: Vanguard), Richard Jacques (Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy), Austin Wintory (Aliens: Fireteam Elite) and Christopher Tin (Old World).

The 2023 Grammy Awards returned to the Crypto.com Arena on Sunday evening, and while Beyoncé made history by breaking the record for the most Grammy wins of all time, Harry Styles took home Album of the Year for his album “Harry’s House.” Styles also won Best Pop Vocal Album.
Beyoncé took home four awards, bringing her career total to 32 — enough to unseat composer Georg Solti as the winningest artist of all time. But this marks the fourth time in a row she’s lost Album of the Year. An astonishing fact for the Grammy record-holder.
Bonnie Raitt pulled an upset in Song of the Year for “Just Like That,” besting the likes of Lizzo, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé.
Lizzo, meanwhile, became the first Black woman to win Record of the Year since Whitney Houston in 1994 for “I Will Always Love You.” Lizzo won for “About Damn Time,” stressing the need for positive,...

Well… Oscar night 2022 was certainly one to remember. Many obituaries will have received their first lines last night, and there’s a few moments that will appear half way down for some of them.
But – here’s the good news: Sian Heder’s Coda won Best Picture, and genuine living legend Troy Kotsur took home the Best Supporting Actor award. It may have been a surprise for some, as Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog was hotly favoured. In the second piece of excellent news it was Campion herself who took home the Best Director gong, many would argue it’s long overdue.
Elsewhere Encanto, Will Smith, Jessica Chastain all took to the stage to collect their awards, and it’s pleasing to see another year when the awards were well spread out. It’s a sign of an industry in fine fettle, which is just as well given,...

Women at the 94th Academy Awards won 10 of the 43 individual Oscar statuettes handed out on Sunday night, the worst showing for female winners since the 2018 Academy Awards.
That’s 23% of the overall individual winners across the Oscars’ 23 competitive categories, bolstered by wins for Best Director Jane Campion, as well as others for Sian Heder for Best Adapted Screenplay and Billie Eilish for Best Original Song. This tally, however, does not include the International Feature category, which is awarded to the film’s country of origin — in this case, Japan for Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s “Drive My Car.”
That total was a drop from last year when we saw Chloé Zhao win Best Director for “Nomadland,” just the second woman to ever do so, as well as Emerald Fennell picking up Best Original Screenplay for “Promising Young Woman.” Their wins in 2021 helped women secure 17 wins out of 47 individual winners from the 23 competitive categories,...

With a trunk of tunes from 3x Tony winner Lin Manuel Miranda, and a double platinum hit song in “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” Encanto is clearly Broadway bound, right?
Clark Spencer, President of Disney Animation Studio, and one of the Oscar winning producers on Encanto tonight said it’s “still early” but “it feels like a natural for someday.”
And again, it’s because of all the glory the film carries, from being a celebration of diversity to “eight incredible songs that Lin wrote and the story Charise (Castro Smith) and Jared (Bush) wrote” said Spencer.
Recently it was announced that Apple Original Films’ Coda was being developed into a stage musical by the pic’s co-producers Vendôme Pictures and Pathé in conjunction with Deaf West.

“We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” the breakout hit from Best Animated Feature winner “Encanto,” has been an unexpected chart-topper since the movie debuted on Disney+ at Christmas. The song finally got the live treatment at the Academy Awards Sunday night even though, you know, it wasn’t actually nominated for the Best Original Song Oscar.
Cast members Adassa, Stephanie Beatriz, Mauro Castillo, Carolina Gaitan, and Diane Guerrero performed the infections song alongside the previously announced Becky G and Luis Fonsi and a very unannounced Megan Thee Stallion. The films in the running for the 2022 Best Original Score Oscar are “Don’t Look Up,” “Dune,” “Encanto,” “Parallel Mothers,” and “The Power of the Dog.” Our current odds indicate that “Dune” (16/5) will take the prize, followed in order of likelihood by “The Power of the Dog” (19/5), “Encanto” (9/2), “Don’t Look Up” (9/2), and “Parallel Mothers” (9/2).
Four of this year’s five composers are previous nominees, with Hans Zimmer standing out from the rest with a dozen bids to his name, the first of which was for “Rain Man” (1989). He triumphed on his second outing for “The Lion King” (1995) and has since earned notices for “The Preacher’s Wife” (1997), “As Good as It Gets” (1998), “The Prince of Egypt” (1999), “The Thin Red Line” (1999), “Gladiator” (2001), “Sherlock Holmes” (2010), “Inception” (2011), “Interstellar” (2015), and “Dunkirk” (2018).

As Deadline broke Monday, Beyoncé has now been officially confirmed to sing in one of the slots of Best Original Song contenders on the 94th Oscars on Sunday. As noted in the Deadline article, speculation is her performance of the nominated song (co-written with Dixson) called “Be Alive” from King Richard will take place via satellite from a Compton tennis court. That aspect, however, was not in the Academy’s long-awaited announcement today of plans for the Best Song presentations on the ABC Oscarcast.
As my colleague Mike Fleming noted, the formal announcement would come after voting closed Tuesday, and indeed it did — exactly at 5 p.m. Pt, which is the same moment ballots had to be in to PricewaterhouseCoopers. The campaign is over. All that is left now is the show itself.

In any given year there are so many fantastic scores by talented composers that end up just outside the five Academy Award nominations. This year was a particularly competitive year with five movies making it into the nominations, cut down from a stacked shortlist of 15.
Gold Derby odds-makers have Hans Zimmer’s score for Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” in the lead, but not winning by a landslide, because there’s also support for Jonny Greenwood’s “Power of the Dog” score, and for first-time nominee Germaine Franco for Disney’s “Encanto.” But this piece is more about listening to each of the five contenders and analyzing why they were indeed worthy of nominations.

“And the Oscar goes to …” A hushed pause permeates throughout the Dolby Theatre, followed by the familiar sounds of an envelope being eagerly torn open. A knowing smile, and the words “Hans Zimmer! ‘Dune!'” are called out, followed by raucous applause and a standing ovation. A joyous celebration overtakes the auditorium. The Oscar orchestra begins to play Zimmer’s triumphant “Herald of the Change” track from his “Dune” score, as the world-renowned composer bounds up on stage to accept his long overdue second Academy Award.
Doesn’t that sound like a memorable Oscar night moment? While it’s a shame that this year’s show has decided to cut eight categories from being presented live on stage during the broadcast, we will hopefully still see an edited reel of a jubilant Zimmer accepting the Oscar, capping off a successful run of precursor wins in the lead-up to the big night.

Updated for March 15: The race has tightened with “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” winning best feature at the 49th annual Annie Awards on March 12. In fact, “The Mitchells” dominated with eight prizes, while “Encanto” earned three for character animation, music, and storyboarding. However, despite the impressive outpouring of support for “The Mitchells” by the animation community, “Encanto” has garnered too much adulation and buzz to be denied the Oscar this late in the season.
Updated for February 8: The Oscar nominations are out and Disney dominated with “Encanto” and “Raya and the Last Dragon,” and Pixar’s “Luca.” This marks the first time that Disney has had two in contention since 2016 and the first time it’s had three since 2012. The other two slots were taken by “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” (Netflix/Sony), and the acclaimed documentary “Flee” (Neon/Participant), which also scored historic noms in the doc and international categories.

If you thought you were free of “Encanto” fever, think again.
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 60th feature, which just won a BAFTA for Best Animated Film over the weekend, is about to get new life as a new sing-along version of the movie is about to be released on Disney+ this Friday. As the early clip (which you can watch above) shows, it’s a little bit more sophisticated than the follow-the-bouncing-dot version you were probably imagining. (Anybody who had a Disney Sing-Along Songs VHS tape knows that we’re talking about.) This new version has more complicated visuals (those big graphics with the characters’ names are great) and a zippier presentation.
And what’s more – there’ll be plenty of these special releases down the line.
The official press release states that there will be more sing-along versions of Disney classics on Disney+ later this year, including “Frozen, “Frozen 2,...

Composer Germaine Franco has already made Oscar history with “Encanto” as the first Latina and woman from Disney feature animation to be nominated in the original score category. She’s also broken with tradition by bringing magical realism to the Disney animated musical, holding her own against four veteran composers: Hans Zimmer (“Dune”), Jonny Greenwood (“The Power of the Dog”), Alberto Iglesias (“Parallel Mothers”), and Nicholas Britell (“Don’t Look Up”).
After being recruited by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who musically spearheaded “Encanto” with his eight songs (including the Oscar-nominated “Dos Oruguitas” and the record-breaking “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”), Franco immediately started thinking about Colombia and its vibrant musical traditions, the magical Madrigal family and their enchanted village, and the plucky Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz), whose quirky ordinariness makes her feel like an outsider.

The “Encanto” soundtrack remains truly enchanted, spending its ninth week at number-one on the Billboard 200 albums chart for the tracking week spanning March 4 through March 10. This comes as the film continues to notch wins during the awards season, claiming the BAFTA for Best Animated Feature and a Society of Composers and Lyricists prize for Germaine Franco‘s score. Sony Animation/Netflix’s innovative, 2D-inspired “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” led the 49th annual Annie Awards Saturday with eight wins, including best feature, direction and writing, character design, production design, editorial, FX, and voice acting (Abbie Jacobson as Katie). Asifa-Hollywood’s animation version of the Oscars was held virtually at UCLA’s Royce Hall for the second consecutive year because of the pandemic.
Disney’s Oscar frontrunner, “Encanto,” the animated musical set in Colombia, followed with three awards for character animation, music, and storyboarding. Netflix owned the Annie Awards on Saturday, picking up 20 of the night’s 31 competitive trophies during the virtual show. The streamer’s “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” was named best animated feature, topping the film categories with eight wins while “Arcane” ruled the TV side with nine, including best TV/media – general audience.
Neon’s animated documentary “Flee,” by Jonas Poher Rasmussen, was named best indie feature.
In addition to the top film award, “Mitchells,” from Sony Pictures Animation for Netflix, won awards for writing, FX, character design, production design, voice acting and editorial. The victory could give it an edge at the Academy Awards, with final Oscar voting set to start Thursday.
“This team never settled for anything that wasn’t original, bold or new and they broke the rules,” said Christopher Miller, who produced the film along with his Lord Miller partner Phil Lord and Sony Pictures Animation’s Kurt Albrecht.

Netflix’s “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” dominated the 49th annual Annie Awards on Saturday, winning eight awards to only three for Disney’s “Encanto.” While “Mitchells” from Mike Rianda and Jeff Rowe has won more critics’ awards than “Encanto,” the Disney film has won virtually every Hollywood guild award and is the prohibitive favorite to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
“Mitchells” won in every one of the eight categories in which it was nominated at the Annie Awards, including Best Feature, Best Direction, Best Writing and Best Voice Acting (Abbi Jacobson). The three wins for “Encanto” – for character animation, music and storyboarding – came in categories in which “Mitchells” was not nominated.

The Academy’s 400-member music branch singled out an especially diverse group this year, including composers born in England, Spain and Germany, along with two Americans – one of whom is not only female but also a person of color.

And while “Dune” has long been the favorite of Oscar prognosticators, don’t count out critically praised “Power of the Dog,” the colorful backdrop of “Encanto,” or Academy voters’ frequent use of the score category as consolation prize: a convenient way to reward a film that won’t win anything else.

Composer Germaine Franco’s Oscar nomination for “Encanto” is a landmark moment in film music:
– She is the first Latina to be nominated in that category;
– She is only the sixth woman ever to be nominated for an original score;
– And she is the first woman to score a Disney film.
But ask any of her colleagues in the profession and they’ll tell you something else: that it’s a triumph for a musically talented, genuinely kind person who has worked hard her entire life, dating back decades to her childhood in El Paso, Texas, just across the border from where her grandparents were born in Chihuahua and Durango, Mexico.
Franco landed the “Encanto” assignment in part because she had firmly established the Mexican backdrop of Disney’s 2017 film “Coco” via her orchestrations and original songs. Says Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is also nominated as songwriter for “Encanto”: “I...

In a possible preview of what may take home Oscars for music, “No Time to Die” songwriters Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell and “Encanto” composer Germaine Franco won Society of Composers & Lyricists awards Tuesday night at Los Angeles’ Skirball Center.
Franco’s Colombian-flavored music for “Encanto” took the award for outstanding original score for a studio film, overtaking scores for “Dune” and “The Power of the Dog,” among others, in the balloting. Daniel Hart’s medieval sounds for “The Green Knight” won original score for an independent film. “Encanto” is Oscar nominated, while Hart was short-listed for the Oscar but didn’t make the final five.

The Disney musical “Encanto” about a magical Colombian family and the Danish documentary “Flee” about a boy’s struggle to escape Afghanistan couldn’t be more different from each other, but they’re tied at the Oscars with three nominations apiece. That gives them the chance to make history: strangely, no animated film in the history of the Oscars has ever won more than two competitive Oscars.
There are 12 animated films that are tied with two Oscars each. Before the motion picture academy introduced the Best Animated Feature category in 2001 that meant victories for Best Score and Best Song. Those were the wins for “Pinocchio” (1940), “The Little Mermaid” (1989), “Beauty and the Beast” (1991) “Aladdin” (1992), “The Lion King” (1994), and “Pocahontas” (1995).

The Academy Awards Nominees Luncheon was a happy occasion full of hugs between stars, but also a sense of trepidation as the first Academy luncheon since the Covid-19 pandemic started in March 2020. With a live, in-person event held at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, with remarks from Oscars producer Will Packer and Academy president David Rubin, over 200 guests gathered to celebrate the achievements of this year’s nominees for the 94th Oscars, set to take place on March 27.
Rubin’s opening remarks acknowledged the war in Ukraine and the Academy’s global support for a peaceful resolution.
Some key takeaways from the event
1. The Academy wants the show to be fun.
Packer emceed the top of the event, praising the year’s crop of nominees. “This is the year,” he says to the crowd. “If there’s ever been time for celebration, this is the year. You...

Monday’s Oscar Nominees Luncheon tried hard to be a normal event. But in this odd, stop-and-start, elongated awards season, it should come as no surprise that it didn’t quite pull it off.
The annual event, an Academy Award tradition since the early 1980s, was celebratory and collegial, as this luncheon always is. But it also had a tentative air to it, as if nobody was quite secure with the idea of gathering, largely unmasked, in a tightly-packed room at the Fairmont Century Plaza – and the fact that the usual “class photo” was not taken in one big group but in about 10 separate photos of smaller groups of nominees made things even odder.
“This. Is. The. Year,” said Oscar show producer Will Packer in his speech welcoming 169 nominees to the event. “If there was ever a time to revel in a celebration, this is the year.”

Director Byron Howard joined producer Yvett Merino and composer Germaine Franco on a panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees event to discuss Encanto, the Disney movie that is nominated for three Oscars.
Encanto takes place in a magical town sheltered by mountains in Colombia. As she is fleeing from her home, Alma Madrigal (María Cecilia Botero) loses her husband and prays for a miracle to save her three children. The candle she was holding becomes magical and builds an “encanto” around the refugees, blasts away the invaders, and builds a sentient house for her family to live in. The candle gave magical gifts to Alma’s family for 50 years, until her granddaughter Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz) mysteriously receives no gift. Mirabel starts to notice cracks forming in the house and goes on a quest to fix the magic of the candle, without the aid of any special gifts herself.

If we’ve found a little silver lining to this Covid situation, it’s that it inspired us to stream our Contenders events since the earliest days of the pandemic. And we’ve not only reached a global audience in the comfort of their own homes, but we’ve also found a brave new world in which we screen chats with talent who couldn’t have made it to the stage in person anyway due to their schedules.

As Disney’s “Encanto” continues to break music chart records, a much more personal moment stands out to composer Germaine Franco. It’s a viral moment, captured on social media, of a little boy who lights up at realizing that he looks just like the young character Antonio. “It’s so beautiful because he sees himself on screen,” she tells Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast.
“Encanto” features eight original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, while Franco’s score cuts in and out of the songs, evoking a sense of magical realism. On the latest episode of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Franco talks about working with Miranda, the film’s success and landing an Oscar nomination. Listen below:
When Germaine Franco began the scoring process on “Encanto,” she says the whole film wasn’t completely animated and the songs were still being worked on. “I met with [filmmakers] Byron Howard and...

Disney's animated film "Encanto" debuted to critical acclaim and, for a pandemic-era release, solid box office numbers upon its theatrical opening in late November 2021. A month later, however, it exploded in popularity upon premiering on Disney+, with Lin-Manuel Miranda's song "We Don't Talk About Bruno" sky-rocketing its way up the Billboard 200 charts. The "Hamilton" mastermind is now on the verge of earning the coveted Egot distinction at the 94th annual Academy Awards ceremony, where the tune "Dos Oruguitas" is up for the Best Original Song Oscar, with Germaine Franco also in the running for Best Original Score and...

Updated, March 1: The Set Decorators Society of America addressed this letter to top Academy brass on Monday.
“In a climate of great cultural and political division, the Academy has elected to demote eight branches from equal recognition at the Academy Awards: Production Design, Documentary Short, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Animated Short, Live Action Short, and Sound. The Sdsa takes this as a tremendous blow to the ideal of equality among the Academy’s branches. The Oscar for Outstanding Production Design is presented to the Production Designer and Set Decorator.
“The diminution of these specific awards, which you declare to be “the fat in need of trimming” from the broadcast in order to make it more entertaining, is punitive not only to the individual artists singled out for this treatment, but to entire industries represented by each one, who take enormous pride in their part in the...

The team behind Disney Animation’s “Encanto” gave themselves a high degree of difficulty: In a development/production process that took five years of constant rewrites, they insisted on a film with a family of 12 principals, while most animated films center on half that number.
The film is about 15-year-old Mirabel Madrigal (voiced by Stephanie Beatriz) and her family; the breakout star for fans and social media is Bruno, the exiled uncle voiced by John Leguizamo. “Encanto” was written by Jared Bush and Charise Castro Smith from a story credited to six writers, including those two. Castro Smith and Bush directed alongside Byron Howard.
“We knew he was someone people would gravitate towards,” Bush says on Bruno. “John was so spectacular: funny, lovable and weird — and in not a lot of screen time!”
Bruno is part of a long line of family outcasts, starting with Greek tragedies through Shakespeare to Buster Keaton,...

The Alliance for Women Film Composers (Awfc) has released a statement condemning the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ decision to not broadcast the best original score category live during this year’s Oscar ceremony.
The Academy first confirmed its decision to present several Oscar categories outside of the live March 27 telecast on Tuesday, via a letter from president David Rubin that was sent to Academy membership. The letter explained that these awards will instead be given out an hour prior to the on-camera ceremony, with clips from the speeches being incorporated into the telecast. The other categories aside from score that won’t be awarded live this year are documentary short, animated short, live action short, film editing, makeup and hairstyling, production design and sound. The move generated instant controversy among industry veterans, with the American Cinema Editors guild issuing a public statement condemning the decision.

Details of this year’s upcoming Oscars telecast are emerging following a Wednesday meeting between the Academy and representatives for the studios and talent publicists.
On Tuesday, it was announced that several major categories will not be presented on the air during the live telecast. Instead, in an effort to present a more streamlined and television-friendly broadcast, eight honors will be awarded one hour before the on-camera portion, and then later edited into the March 27 ceremony.
The reaction to the Oscars’ new format was met with strong reactions from the industry. Though some crafts guilds were diplomatic, their public statements hinted at bruised feelings. However, multiple sources tell Variety that there are currently discussions among members of the music branch to ask the score nominees to boycott, appealing to the nominees for best original score — Nicholas Britell (“Don’t Look Up”), Germaine Franco (“Encanto”), Jonny Greenwood (“The Power of the Dog...
