Now that Francis Ford Coppola has unveiled his long-in-the-works epic Megalopolis to buyers and the industry, we’re just a few weeks away from its official premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. As he hopefully secures U.S. distribution soon, the first look has finally arrived.
Featuring Adam Driver and Nathalie Emmanuel towering above the metropolis, the first image comes courtesy from Vanity Fair, who also share a few new quotes from Coppola himself. “My first goal always is to make a film with all my heart, so I began to realize it would be about love and loyalty in every aspect of human life,” said the director. “Megalopolis echoed these sentiments, in which love was expressed in almost crystalline complexity, our planet in danger and our human family almost in an act of suicide, until becoming a very optimistic film that has faith in the human being to possess...

Spoiler Alert: This post contains some details of Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, set for an eight-episode launch on the streamer March 21.
“Why should I get bent out of shape about what the world might look like 400 years from now,” physics research assistant Saul Durand (Jovan Adepo) says flippantly in Netflix’s 3 Body Problem. “I have no control over that.”
The sentiment of those words landed hard on me, because that’s almost exactly how I felt about the bloated and often remarkably boring big-budget sci-fi series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and True Blood producer Alexander Woo.
Premiering Friday night at SXSW in Austin’s Paramount Theatre, Netflix’s much-hyped series is based on the Hugo Award-winning writings of Cixin Liu. Set to launch with eight episodes worldwide almost everywhere but Liu’s native China on March 21, the fact is 3 Body Problem...

Fresh off of winning her second career Grammy, Kylie Minogue has signed with UTA for live representation in the United States and Canada and acting worldwide.
The Australian singer won the best pop dance recording Grammy — a new award — earlier this month for her viral hit “Padam Padam.” The song is from her 16th studio album, Tension, which was released last year and reached the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
Minogue, 55, won her first Grammy — best dance recording — in 2004 for her groovy hit “Come Into My World.” Her hits also include “Can’t Get You Out of My Head,” “The Loco-motion” and “Love at First Sight,” among others.
She has sold more than 80 million records worldwide, earned five billion streams and launched nine U.K. No. 1 albums. She’s won three Brit Awards and two MTV Video Music Awards, and is the only female artist to score a No.

“With great power comes great responsibility” – that Voltaire quote resonates with The Bachelor this week as Joey Graziadei made his rounds on his publicity tour ahead of the Season 28 premiere.
We first met Joey on Charity Lawson’s season of The Bachelorette, and though he didn’t win that final rose, he was given the lead role instead.
Now, it’s his turn to hand out roses.
And it turns out that it’s not his favorite thing to do – at all.
The newest Bachelor star is learning that sometimes being in charge means making hard decisions and hurting some feelings along the way.
There are a lot of feelings to hurt this season too, as 32 women gathered at the mansion in hopes of winning Joey over, and only one will remain at the end.

In the years before Twitter was euthanized, I’d patiently wait for the onset of the holiday season, and the renewal in my feed of the great “Love Actually” Debate. Every year, the best and brightest of the world — middle management apparatchiks, underemployed magazine writers and hall of fame doomscrollers — would chime in, mostly on the nein side, and make their arguments with eloquence. My favorite was ‘You’re a fucking idiot.’
That one I heard a lot.
“Love Actually” turns 20 this month, and I thought it was time for a thorough revaluation. Was it still a glorious double-steak overstuffed Chipotle burrito of humanity, or would I now see it as they did — a foot-long Subway sandwich with way too many olives bought at a South Dakota gas station?
So I watched the movie again this week. I was struck with an unearned epiphany, the kind that you find in a middlebrow holiday romantic comedy.

Leading European artists, including Maria Choustova (“Donbass”), Sergei Loznitsa (“Donbass”), Pawel Lozinski (“Film balkonowy”) and Radu Jude (“Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn”), have taken a stand to support the Israeli film community as it seeks to rally voices and help free over 220 hostages in Gaza.
These names penned a heartfelt letter addressing the resurgence of antisemitism across Europe and the significant part that European artists must play in raising the alarm. The letter will be sent to the European Film Academy with a request to circulate it among its 3,000 members ahead of the European Film Awards ceremony on Dec. 9.
In Israel, prominent filmmakers such as Ari Folman, Hagai Levi, Jasmine Kainy, Eliran Peled and Joseph Cedar (“Footnote”) have spearheaded an online campaign called Bring Them Home Now, documenting the stories of relatives whose loved ones, including children and elderly people, were abducted during the Hamas terror attack on Oct.

Forget the clichés about the Vegas residency being a déclassé prelude to retirement. Since 2003, when Céline Dion began her $681.3 million residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, talent has been clamoring for coveted spots on Vegas stages. Chart toppers who could fill arenas across the country are setting up shop in Vegas to take advantage of state-of-the-art venues such as Dolby Live at Park MGM or the new Resorts World Theatre. Among the megastars with recent runs are Silk Sonic, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Usher, whose kinetic show was a celebrity magnet, attracting the likes of Tom Holland and Zendaya.
But with all of the above moving on, who will take their place as must-see resident artists? The most obvious — or at least most imminent — candidate is U2, whose 25-date show, U2:uv Achtung Baby Live at Sphere, debuts Sept. 29 at the 20,000-seat venue, the most capacious to ever host a residency.

The last time Haley Bennett starred in a gloriously romantic period piece, it was Joe Wright’s daring musical re-imagining of “Cyrano de Bergerac,” 2021’s “Cyrano.” She’s back in lavish gowns and rapturously beautiful settings in “Widow Clicquot,” Thomas Napper’s ode to (in no particular order) champagne, doomed romance and girl power. If it’s neither as bold nor as swooning as “Cyrano,” it does provide additional evidence that Bennett slips easily into the 19th century as both an object of beauty and a force of nature.
The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it is one of a number of wildly varied films in which women claim power that had been denied to them in patriarchal societies. But the gender-driven power struggles in “Widow Clicquot” are in some ways the most conventional part of the film, which can soar in one...

‘Widow Clicquot’ Review: Haley Bennett in Champagne Biopic with More Personal Than Professional Fizz
Like the elixirs that Barbe-Nicole (Haley Bennett) so carefully tends to at her vineyard, Widow Clicquot takes time to come into its fullest potential. Initially, it appears a sticky-sweet tale of love, as manifested by its heroine’s determination to carry on the vision of her late husband François (Tom Sturridge). But it takes on added layers as Barbe-Nicole reveals the breadth of her ambition, and as her rosy recollections of her marriage give way to thornier ones — ultimately yielding a drama that feels more substantive than its 89-minute run time might suggest, if not quite rich enough to leave its own lasting legacy.
Rooted in the history behind the still-renowned champagne Veuve Clicquot, Widow Clicquot arrives amid a bumper crop of biopics about brands. Like most of the others, it’s not exactly a commercial, but does have the PR-friendly side effect of bolstering the company’s image.

“The impertinence!” scream the courtiers of Louis Xv when his newly recruited mistress, Countess Jeanne du Barry, has the audacity to look him in the eye. It is just the latest in a long line of taboo-breaking outrages that surround the affair between the king and the commoner: She doesn’t have a title! She turns her back on him! She dresses like a man! For this reason alone, it’s easy to see why Maïwenn, one of France’s more controversial directors, saw fit to topline herself with Johnny Depp in a film that’s entirely about class and status and whose leading characters are bent on committing reputational suicide.
Jeanne du Barry also flexes the specifically French cultural views surrounding the topic of sexual impropriety. While the Cannes Film Festival continues to appear to be wilfully deaf to the topic of cancel culture, Maïwenn’s latest feature — which...

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has cryptically talked about the ban on the recently released film ‘The Kerala Story’ in a thread about the “propaganda” film.
Cryptically reacting to the ban of ‘The Kerala Story’ in West Bengal, Kashyap tweeted on Wednesday: “You agree with the film or not, be it propaganda, counter propaganda, offensive or not, to ban it is just wrong.”
He also shared a quote by French philosopher Voltaire, which read: “I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.”
‘The Kerala Story’ is currently in controversy after the film’s trailer claimed that 32,000 girls from Kerala went missing and joined the terrorist group, Isis. Later, the film’s makers had changed it to three women.

‘The Kerala Story’ is currently in controversy after the film’s trailer claimed that 32,000 girls from Kerala went missing and joined the terrorist group, Isis. Later, the film’s makers had changed it to three women.
Anurag tweeted it is “just wrong” to ban a film, even if it is “propaganda” and asked people to watch...

On May 23, 2023, the streaming service Max will debut a reboot of "Clone High," the Canadian animated series created by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Bill Lawrence that initially ran in 2002 and 2003.
For those unfamiliar with the series, it had something of an odd premise. A shadowy governmental organization called the Secrey Board of Shadowy Figures has found a way to clone notable leaders from throughout human history. Hundreds of them were cloned about 16 years ago, and the teenage versions of the historical figures are now all attending the same all-American high school. The series lead was Abraham Lincoln (Will Forte), who would encounter the usual trials of adolescence. Abe would have an on-again-off-again relationship with Cleopatra (Christa Miller), and was best friends with Joan of Arc (Nicole Sullivan) and Gandhi (Michael McDonald). Abe's primary rival was the womanizing JFK (Chris Miller). Other attendees of Clone High included Martin Luther King, Jr.,...

The Guardians of the Galaxy writer-director and DC Studios CEO has turned his focus to the company’s ultimate hero. But will anyone ever fill Christopher Reeve’s 45-year-old red boots?
The old DC adage (with apologies to Voltaire) always went that if Superman did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him. Perhaps such religious imagery goes some way to explaining why, despite umpteen reboots over the years, and even though the character had been in existence for four decades by the time he really arrived on the big screen, it is Richard Donner’s 1978 take, starring the quietly majestic Christopher Reeve, that remains the definitive iteration. For comic-book fans, that version of the man of steel really was right up there with Jesus and, frankly, there never has been a second coming.
Nobody could accuse James Gunn of not being up for a challenge then, following the...

This week we wind up our discussion about the 6th volume of DC’s reprint of my (and Kim Yale’s) run on the Suicide Squad. We’ll be discussing the final story in the book; it was issues 48 and 49 and featured Oracle, a.k.a Barbara Gordon, the former Batgirl crippled by an attack from the Joker. She then re-made herself into the go-to information broker in the Dcu. Well, Kim and I re-made her but you get the idea.
This story brings back another character from the Squad, Simon Lagrieve who had been the Squad’s shrink. He and Waller had not parted well and now he was the head of the Institute for Metahuman Studies (the Imhs). La Grieve was doing Waller a favor in treating two members of the Squad who were hurt in the previous story and in return, had a favor to ask of her.

Two well-regarded, nonagenarian British performers have died in the last few days: 93-year-old Christopher Lee (June 7, '15), best known for his many portrayals of Dracula and assorted movie villains and weirdos, from the title role in The Mummy to Dr. Catheter in Gremlins 2: The New Batch. 91-year-old Ron Moody (yesterday, June 11), among whose infrequent film appearances was the role of Fagin, the grotesque adult leader of a gang of boy petty thieves, in the 1968 Best Picture Academy Award-winning musical Oliver!, which also earned him a Best Actor nomination. Having been featured in nearly 200 movies and, most importantly, having had his mainstream appeal resurrected by way of the villainous Saruman in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies (and various associated merchandising,...

Sex sells, and I’m buying! I have a confession to make that shames me. I have never read 50 Shades of Grey. It just got so mainstream and the ‘done thing’ to do. I couldn’t even tell you what its about. However, I am very acquainted with classic erotic literature which has long been a passion of mine for years.
Erotica has been around for centuries – from the bawdiness of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales (beautifully brought to life in Pasolini’s cinematic version of the work) right up to feminist neurotica erotica novel Fear of Flying. And a lot of us have had a gander at it over the years. Has it made corrupt perverts out of us? We will be discreet about that issue and take up our prime positions for filth mongering at 10 classic works of erotic fiction…

Stanley Kubrick brings war criminals to justice in his unflinching portrayal of the war, but unfortunately history wasn't as kind
• More Reel history
Paths of Glory (1957)
Director: Stanley Kubrick
Entertainment grade: A–
History grade: C
Trench warfare in the first world war (1914-18) involved intense hardship for soldiers and a massive toll of casualties (400,000-800,000 at Passchendaele; between 600,000 and a million at Verdun; perhaps more than a million at the Somme.
Strategy
The film begins on the French front in 1916. (In a rare moment of historical authenticity, Hollywood has resisted making the heroes American. The fact this is set a year before the Us entered the war wouldn't necessarily stop them.) General Broulard (Adolphe Menjou) tells General Mireau (George Macready) that he must take a German position known as the Anthill. His reward will be a new star. "I'm responsible for the lives of 8,000 men," Mireau says. "What is my ambition against that?...

"We live as we dream," wrote Joseph Conrad, "alone." Mira Schor's recent exhibition at Marvelli, Voice and Speech, makes a compelling argument against Conrad's existentialist notions with paintings that are interrogations of thinking, speaking, writing and, of course, the act of painting.
In this exhibition of recent paintings, Schor explores the concepts of "voice" and "speech" in contemporary politics and art theory, inspired by an idea put forward in Michel de Certeau's The Practice of Everyday Life. De Certeau's theme is that there exists a knowledge...

Jason Segel's Jeff is a slacker mooch. He's thirty; he's never left home, never dated after high school, and spends all of his time as a toilet Jungian getting high, watching infomercials, and trying to find meaning in his life because “Everyone and everything is interconnected in this universe.” The guy's a mess, but he's an earnest mess. In some ways, he's the modern version of Candide. Unlike Voltaire's old hero, Jeff can recognize and feel pain (and be set back by it), but he also exudes a certain unstoppable passion for meaning. He loves the movie Signs, and when the universe seems to be giving him a series of signals about some guy named Kevin, Jeff embarks on ridiculous, yet well-crafted slapstick journey for answers. Washington — The good times never seemed so good for Neil Diamond.
Known for his songs that have become anthems at ballparks and bars, Diamond was chosen Wednesday to receive the Kennedy Center Honors this year along with some of the biggest names from Broadway, jazz, classical music and Hollywood.
Diamond will be honored with Broadway singer Barbara Cook, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, saxophonist Sonny Rollins and actress Meryl Streep for their contributions to American culture through the arts. President Barack Obama will salute the artists and others will perform in their honor at a ceremony at the Kennedy Center on Dec. 4. CBS will broadcast the show Dec. 27.
Diamond said he was "flying way above sea level" when he heard about the honor.
"I've watched, and I've seen, and I've even dreamed that someday that would happen to me," he told The Associated Press. "But I never really believed that it would.

Italian creator of the satirical film Mondo Cane and its 'shockumentary' successors
When the Italian film director Gualtiero Jacopetti, who has died at the age of 91, made Mondo Cane (A Dog's Life) in 1962, he tapped into people's curiosity and provided the strangest commercially successful film in the history of cinema. Audiences not yet accustomed to cheap air travel or the idea of globalisation were unprepared for its colourful National Geographic-style montages of "primitive" rites and "civilised" wrongs. The following year, they flocked to see the film's sequels, Mondo Pazzo (Mad World, or Mondo Cane No 2) and La Donna nel Mondo (Women of the World).
Mondo Cane was a film made out of a compilation of pithy sequences depicting strange rituals from around the globe. But while Jacopetti documented the peculiarities of what was then described as the third world, he also mocked the alleged superiority of western culture. The...

When screenwriters or, more often, directors and studio executives want to impress, they natter on with would-be eloquence and erudition about how a movie reveals “the hero’s journey.” They namecheck figures from Greek mythology and the Bible, Voltaire’s “Candide” and, of course, Luke Skywalker and the original “Star Wars” trilogy. The phrase, “the hero’s journey,” originates with the revered classics scholar Joseph Campbell. In his 1949 book, “The Hero With a Thousand Faces,” he used it to describe the outlines of a recurring story, one which is found repeatedly across times and...

At several points during Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, a quote by Socrates flashed into my mind. That’s a sentence you didn’t expect. Perhaps further throwing off your expectations, the quote is, “Children today are tyrants. They contradict their parents, gobble their food, and tyrannize their teachers.” That quote has always stuck with me, because he said it (if he really did) around 400 B.C..

Publisher Drawn and Quarterly has compiled the work of parody cartoonist Robert Sikoryak in a single volume titled Masterpiece Comics. The satirical artist made a name for himself in the 1990s with his comedic crossover projects. Some of his notable strips have combined Batman with Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, John Stanley's Little Lulu with The Scarlet Letter and Ziggy with Voltaire's Candide. "When I was putting the book together, I had some trouble trying to reconcile the 12 different strips that were created over many years," Sikoryak told Cbr. "I had always imagined them being in one book, but I didn't have an organising principle for them. It became clear that I had to find some structure. I'm all about (more)...
