Stage: 1975 Tony
Award winner for his new libretto for the 1974 revival of
Leonard Bernstein's musical, "Candide". Wheeler's script, more faithful to
Voltaire's original novel and more directly humorous than 'Lillian Hellman''s original libretto, helped "Candide" to finally become a smash hit on
Broadway, and eventually replaced the Hellman script as the official version.
