Canadian director Atom Egoyan is bringing his latest movie, Seven Veils, to the Toronto Film Festival for a world premiere, with Amanda Seyfried in the lead role as a tortured opera director.
Seyfried reteamed with her Chloe director Egoyan for the opera-themed drama where she plays Jeanine, a theatre director remounting her former mentor’s most famous work, an adaptation of the opera Salome from composer Richard Strauss, based on the play by Oscar Wilde. As Jeanine reenters the opera world after years away, she is haunted by dark and disturbing memories from her past as her repressed trauma colors the present.
Rebecca Liddiard, Douglas Smith, Mark O’Brien and Vinessa Antoine also star in Seven Veils, which was shot in and around Toronto earlier this year. Should the ongoing strikes by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA continue into the fall, American actors will be barred from publicizing any big-ticket studio movies...

Paris-based WTFilms has released a first image of Sarah Gadon and Raoul Trujillo in Canadian director Sook-Yin Lee’s new feature Octavio Is Dead!, which is currently shooting.
Billed as a mysterious, sensual ghost story, the film stars Gadon as a reserved young woman called Tyler, who escapes her overbearing mother, played by Rosanna Arquette, and enters the rich and strange world of her deceased father, Octavio (Trujillo).
“The dailies are electric. On screen, Sarah Gadon, Raoul Trujillo and Rosanna Arquette build passionate, complex and haunting relationships,” said WTFilms co-founder Gregory Chambet.
The feature is produced by Jennifer Weiss, Simone Urdl and Jamie Manning of The Film Farm with the participation of Telefilm Canada, CBC, and the Ontario Media Development Corporation.

The enterprising Us outfit, which acquired the film in partnership with DirecTV and plans to release this fall, brokered the deal with Wme on behalf of eOne and the filmmakers.

The Captive
Director: Atom Egoyan
Writers: Atom Egoyan, David Fraser
Producers: Simone Urdl, Jennifer Weiss, Stephen Traynor, Atom Egoyan
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Scott Speedman, Rosario Dawson
While we were a bit disappointed in Egoyan’s 2013 offering, Devil’s Knot, which managed to hit all the rote clichés of an unnecessary and glamorized reenactment of a rather well documented criminal case, we’re holding onto hope for this latest effort, a glossy looking thriller starring some Egoyan regulars (Bruce Greenwood, Speedman) and some American matinee presence. It seems 2009′s Chloe marked a major turning point for Egoyan, whose independent films once had a distinct tone and attitude. While Chloe was a remake of an Anne Fontaine film and Knot was based on actual events, we’re thinking Egoyan has less pressure facing this venture as there shouldn’t be so much weighted preconception. We’re not crazy about the new title,...

Perhaps not as sturdy or as developed as it is with Cannes or Tiff, Atom Egoyan’s relationship with Sundance remains a good one when you double his output of films directed (Next of Kin and Exotica) with films that he exec-produced in The Saddest Music in the World and Away From Her. Formerly going by the title of “Queen of the Night,” The Captive features Ryan Reynolds, Egoyan lucky charm Scott Speedman, Rosario Dawson, Mireille Enos, Kevin Durand, Alexia Fast and the almost always dependable Bruce Greenwood in what should be some welcome genre diversion at the fest and one that will make us forget about the poorly executed Devil’s Knot.

“Tracking Shot” is a monthly featurette here on Ioncinema.com that looks at a dozen or so projects that are moments away from lensing. This February we’ve got a slew of projects that we feel are worth signaling out: we start with a sequel (and pictured above) we find The Raid 2 (also known as Berandal) which has set up shop with the same producing team, star player and writer/director Gareth Huw Evans. Sony Pictures Classics backed the film prior to production. This picks up two hours after the first installment ends.
We have the highly touted Black List screenplay that could very well place itself in the fall festival releases in David O. At some point in the not too distant future, Ryan Reynolds will be facing down hordes of sword-wielding immortals in Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's Highlander remake. Before he heads to Scotland, however, Reynolds is off to Canada to star in Atom Egoyan's Queen Of The Night. No, it's not an entire film based on a Whitney Houston song or an operatic character. The details are scarce at this point, but the film is apparently a kidnap thriller in which Reynolds will play the father of an abducted child. Don't expect much in the way of clock-ticking revenge action though: Egoyan's films (like Calendar, Exotica, Ararat and Adoration) tend to be more cerebral than that.Egoyan, as usual, has co-written the screenplay, and will produce the indie thriller along with Simone Urdl, Jennifer Weiss and Stephen Traynor. He's currently still hard at work on The Devil's Knot, his dramatisation of...

Yeah, we know. We're as surprised as you are. The last we hard about French filmmaker Laurent Cantet's adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates' "Foxfire" was when it was announced over a year ago. We were excited by the prospect of the director behind the fantastic Palme d'Or-winning "The Class" as well as "Time Out" and "Human Resources taking on the tale that has most famously already hit the screen in a version starring Angelina Jolie and Jenny Lewis. Well, lo and behold, this thing already went in front of cameras last summer. And with some additional photography now underway in Peterborough, Ontario in Canada, producers Jennifer Weiss and Simone Urdl have revealed to the Peterborough Examiner that the film is being prepped for a bow at the Toronto International Film Festival this fall. "Foxfire" follows the story of a group of headstrong, adolescent girls who grow up amidst violence and frustration in.

Toronto -- Sarah Polley's heart just isn't in it. The Canadian actress-turned-director on Tuesday withdrew her name from "The Heart," a two-minute film she shot on female cardiac health to air this Sunday on Canadian broadcaster CTV's nationwide telecast of the Academy Awards.
Polley said she pulled her credit from the Oscar short after she learned that the project from Canada's Heart and Stroke Foundation might indirectly market the Unilever brand margarine Becel.
"In December 2009, I made a film to be aired during the Academy Awards that I believed was to promote the Heart and Stroke Foundation," Polley said in a statement Tuesday.
Polley said she was initially thrilled to be associated with a film for the medical research charity. But her anti-corporate radar was raised when Polley learned that Becel commissioned the short.
"I have since learned that my film is also being used to promote a product.

Adoration, Cannes, In Competition
Atom Egoyan's remarkable new film Adoration is a haunting meditation on the nature of received wisdom and how it can warp individuals, damage families and even threaten society.
Shot on beautifully utilized film but employing images vividly from the Internet and mobile phones, it's an examination of the power that false ideas may have on people's imagination and beliefs when they are repeated over and over.
Featuring an exquisitely measured score for violin, cello and piano by Mychael Danna (The Sweet Hereafter, Little Miss Sunshine), the film treats moviegoers as grownups and it will appeal greatly to audiences that relish articulate and insightful filmmaking.
Structured as a mystery story with shifts in time and scenes from the imagination of characters, Egoyan's intelligent script tells of a high school student named Simon who takes a unique approach to an assignment in his French language class.
Required to translate a news story about a pregnant woman who arrived in Israel with a bomb in her luggage placed there by her boyfriend, Simon imagines himself to be the resulting child with his own dead parents cast as the people involved.
Encouraged by his teacher, Sabine (Arsinee Khanjian), Simon develops the story to the point where his classmates believe his father really was a terrorist and soon it's all over the Internet to the alarm of his uncle, Tom (Scott Speedman), who has raised him since his folks were killed in a car accident.
The boy's late grandfather, Morris (Kenneth Welsh), a condescending bigot and proud of it, always made him believe his Lebanese father (Noam Jenkins) had deliberately caused the death of his adored mother (Rachel Blanchard), and Simon feels he was in some way responsible.
Tom feels accountable too and in a series of well-staged and illuminating scenes, Sabine contrives to help them recognize something closer to the truth.
Bostick, who has to carry much of the film, does so with great aplomb while Speedman and Khanjian provide rewarding portraits of people only slowly coming to terms with great personal loss.
Danna's music maintains the film's high IQ with delicacy and warmth employing wonderful soloists Yi-Jia Susanne Hou on violin, Winona Zelenka on cello, and Eve Egoyan on piano. It's destined to make a very popular soundtrack album.
Cast: Arsinee Khanjian, Scott Speedman, Devon Bostick, Rachel Blanchard, Noam Jenkins, Kenneth Walsh. Director: Atom Egoyan. Screenwriter: Atom Egoyan. Director Of Photography: Paul Sarossy. Production Designer: Phillip Barker. Costume Designer: Debra Hanson. Music: Mychael Danna. Editor: Susan Shipton. Producers: Atom Egoyan, Simone Urdl, Jennifer Weiss. Executive Producers:
Robert Lantos, Michele Halberstadt, Laurent Petin. Sales Agent: Fortissimo Films.

- It was a non-Egoyan kind of year at this year's equivalent to the Academy Awards, but "Egoyan-apprentice" Sarah Polley managed to leave a long-lasting impression with her directorial debut. The actress-turned-director picked up a total of seven awards (a trio of acting awards and the cream of the crop awards of Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director and Best Film) for Away From Her while David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises equaled that tally winning mostly technical awards. Apart from a short film win, the ceremony blanked any wins from the French part of Canada - of course nothing stood a chance against the two popular titles mentioned above. - The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television have announced the nominees for the 28th annual Genie Awards and leading the pack with 12 noms each is David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises and Roger Spottiswoode's Shake Hands with the Devil. The real applause goes to films like Away From Her (7 noms), The Tracey Fragments (6 noms) and Continental, a Film without Guns (5 noms). Two highly promising films that fizzled this year are veteran directors François Girard's Silk (it garnered many technical noms) and Denys Arcand's Days of Darkness who got some sympathy votes. Interesting side note: Ellen Page is going up against Julie Christie not with Juno but with Canadian made Bruce McDonald's The Tracey Fragments. Awards will be handed out just after the Oscars on March 3rd. Best Motion Picturedays Of Darkness - Denise Robert, Daniel LouisAWAY From Her - Daniel Iron, Simone Urdl, Jennifer WeissCONTINENTAL, A

VENICE, Italy -- Veteran director Brian De Palma's filmmaking skills have seldom been as razor sharp as they are in his sensational new film about members of a U.S. Army squad who rape and murder a 15-year-old Iraqi girl and slay her family.
Made on HD video and employing images from digital cameras, video recorders, Internet uploads and old-fashioned film, De Palma's movie is a ferocious argument against the engagement in Iraq for what it is doing to everyone involved.
Made so expertly that it appears to be assembled from genuine footage, the film details the extraordinary psychological pressure suffered by young soldiers on checkpoint duty in occupied areas of Iraq, and then follows one unit as two of its members skew monstrously out of control.
De Palma's screenplay is outstanding, and he draws wonderfully naturalistic performances from his youthful cast. Sympathetic to the young men who lose their way in horrible circumstances but unflinching in its depiction of the horrors that can result, the film is harrowing, but it should find responsive audiences everywhere.
A fictional story based on real events, "Redacted" distills images from an array of sources to tell its story, beginning with those captured by Angel Salazar (Izzy Diaz), a young soldier who hopes they will buy his way into film school. Clean-cut Lawyer McCoy (Rob Devaney) also wields a video camera, but Salazar goes to extremes making a daily record of almost everything he sees.
That includes conversations with the other guys in the unit: Reno Flake (Patrick Carroll), a doper whose name is apt; B.B. Rush Daniel Stewart Sherman), a blowhard with a lot of body fat; Gabe Blix (Kel O'Neill), who likes to read John O'Hara; and two sergeants, Sweet (Ty Jones) and Vazques (Mike Figueroa). They goof around for the camera off duty and Salazar even records them on duty so that when one of them is blown to pieces by a bomb left in roadside trash, he gets it all.
By then, footage from a French documentary about the unit has made clear how the monotony and constant fear of maintaining checkpoints grinds the men down. Constantly being told they have to remain on duty for a further tour, they are drained and on edge. The docu reports that over 24 months 2,000 Iraqis were killed at checkpoints with only 60 proven to be insurgents. In one such incident, a pregnant woman and her baby are killed when her brother, taking her to the hospital, races through the unit's checkpoint thinking he's been waved on.
Rush and Flake are especially vulnerable to demonizing an enemy that they don't recognize or understand. Their plan to rape the daughter of a Sunni man recently arrested comes up almost idly but then becomes one of deadly intent.
De Palma uses all his considerable talent to make clear what has happened to these young men and the performances, especially by Carroll as the callously indifferent Flake and Devaney as the conscience stricken McCoy, are first rate.
The director makes great use of Handel's "Sarabande" in the picture, the somber tones familiar as the main title music in Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon". It's a reminder that nothing depicted in this film is new and that it's a shame it needs to be told again.

The director makes great use of Handel's Sarabande in the picture, the somber tones familiar as the main title music in Kubrick's Barry Lyndon. It's a reminder that nothing depicted in this film is new and that it's a shame it needs to be told again.
