Jeopardy! fans are once again proving that they are quite the passionate bunch. Some viewers of “America’s favorite quiz show” are making their feelings known about a recent contestant, and they aren’t pulling any punches. Some passionate fans have even taken to calling the recent contestant names. Fortunately, Karen Morris seems to be taking it all in stride. In fact, Morris has even gone out of her way to explain her strategy to those who have been hurling vitriol her way.

“Top Gun: Maverick” won the live-action feature film award at the Cinema Audio Society’s Cas Awards, which took place in Los Angeles on Saturday evening.
It won in a category whose nominees were identical to the lineup in the Oscars’ Best Sound category: “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman,” “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” During the time when the Oscars gave out separate sound awards for mixing and editing, the Cas winner went on to take the Oscar for sound mixing a little less than half the time – but in the first two years after the Academy combined its two categories into one, the guild and Oscar winners have matched both times.
Other feature-film winners included “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” for animation and “Moonage Daydream” for documentary.
Television winners included “Better Call Saul,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” and “Only Murders in the Building.

“All Quiet on the Western Front” supervising sound editor Frank Kruse and “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” re-recording mixer Jon Taylor found themselves in a position so many industry artisans face in this modern era: working on a theatrical film for a streaming platform, in this case, Netflix. But both say that the work they do in creating sonic landscapes for the screen doesn’t really change regardless of where the audience eventually finds the film.
“You always are thinking about the end user. So if you’re mixing theatrically and then you do a separate mix for home, how’s that going to translate?” Taylor says in an exclusive video interview on the Gold Derby: Meet the Experts sound panel. “We always mix in Atmos, regardless of what they want…. For acclaimed re-recording mixer Jon Taylor, getting the chance to work on “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” was an entirely new experience.
“I’ve never done a film like this before,” Taylor, a four-time Oscar nominee for “Unbroken,” “Birdman,” “The Revenant” and “First Man,” tells Gold Derby about the stop-motion animated feature in an exclusive video interview as part of our Meet the Experts: Sound panel. The medium, Taylor says, provided the sound team with many advantages, but also some challenges. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“It’s all so precise in the sound that there’s nowhere to hide. You just don’t add extra things to cover production flaws or help loop lines,” he adds. “All of the dialogue and all the music is recorded generally in many different places over the past three years or so. And stringing that together to make it sound like one is definitely a challenge.

When Damien Chazelle’s “First Man” fell out of the Best Picture Oscar race, much of its crafts prestige slipped as well. And, after being shut out last weekend from both the Mpse and Cas awards for sound editing and mixing, “First Man’s” stunning sound work has drifted from favorite to underdog. It’s going to be very hard to beat the rock’n’roll force of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which has all the momentum.
But, regardless of what happens on Sunday, the dramatic and complex sound editing and mixing of “First Man” ranks as one of the best achievements in recent years. “First Man” visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert is nominated for an Oscar for his work on Damien Chazelle‘s docudrama, but the director “wasn’t really interested in trying to reimagine” the Gemini and Apollo missions that led up to the moon landing. “Avengers: Infinity War” is currently predicted to win Best Visual Effects at the Oscars with 82/25 odds. With Best Picture contender “Black Panther” not around to split the vote, this does seem like the perfect opportunity for the former film to become the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to ever win this award. However, fellow Visual Effects nominee “First Man” has more overall Oscars support than all four of its competitors. It is in second place with 19/5 odds. Is it primed for an upset?

Oscar-nominated “First Man” sound editor Ai-Ling Lee says director Damien Chazelle “wanted space travel to have this classical, big, intense feeling,” while giving space itself “this lonely, chilling feeling.” So in addition to “all the authentic sounds that we needed to gather, we also had to create some abstract sounds [for] some of these cockpit sequences.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Lee and fellow sound editor Mildred Iatrou above.

As 2018 draws to a close and various critics groups and deliberating bodies measure the year in movie superlatives, a look below the line at the Academy’s crafts races reveals an art form invigorated by many of today’s most brilliant cinematic minds.
Perhaps the most fully realized visual effort is director Barry Jenkins’ follow-up to the Oscars-crashing “Moonlight”: an adaptation of James Baldwin’s “If Beale Street Could Talk.” For the task of translating 1970s Harlem to the screen, Jenkins tapped underappreciated production designer Mark Friedberg, who despite genius efforts on films like “Far From Heaven” and “Synecdoche, New York,” has never been nominated for an Oscar. “Moonlight” composer Nicholas Britell returned with intricate themes to bear, along with costume designer Caroline Eselin, who embraced a far juicier opportunity this time around. Cap it off with lush photography, once again courtesy of Dp James Laxton, and this is quite an attractive package.

As a child, author Jeannette Walls sometimes went hungry for days, lived for years in a rat-infested shack without running water, and fiercely loved her charismatic, alcoholic father, who frequently spent the few dollars the family had on beer. She transformed the story of her painful childhood into her 2005 book, The Glass Castle, one of the bestselling memoirs of all time. Now the book is finally coming to the big screen, as a movie starring Brie Larsen, Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts, in theaters Aug. 11.

30 years ago today, audiences were treated again to the utterly watchable pair of Daniel and Mr. Miyagi. The Karate Kid, Part II opened in theaters on June 20, 1986. In the sequel, released two years after the original film, Daniel’s wax on, wax off early training days are behind him, and he’s impressively slicing through six blocks of ice. The boy and his mentor travel together to Mr. Miyagi’s home village in Okinawa, Japan. Sparks fly between Daniel and Kumiko, the niece of Mr. Miyagi’s childhood girlfriend, to the synthesizer-tastic tune of “Glory of Love” by Peter Cetera. The song hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 later that summer and got an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. Other notable June 20 happenings in pop culture history: • 1948: The Ed Sullivan Show — then titled Toast of the Town — premiered on CBS. 1. "The Revenant": The sound team (led by sound editors Martin Hernandez and Lon Bender and mixers Jon Taylor, Frank Montaño, Randy Thom and Chris Duesterdiek) brilliantly make nature a sonic character and immerse us in Leonardo DiCaprio’s intense journey in the most effective way. They found existing sounds (bear vocalizations, trees creaking in the wind) and recorded them in real, appropriate locations. The opening Native American ambush has a natural ebb and flow and a nice lull between the action, with the sound of footsteps, wind blowing in the trees, and distant dogs barking in between each flurry of arrows. Plus, the incredible bear attack was sonically underplayed for greater realism, and getting the breathing right — using the sound of a sick horse toward the end when the bear is injured, for example — was just as important as the vocalizations. And what was that weird, mantra-like sound effect?...

Leave it to the Brits! The BAFTA nominations were announced and they gave us a slightly different look at the awards season! For instance, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," the leading Oscar contender in the U.S. just received 3 noms including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Original Screenplay. No Director nomination for McCarthy.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," a handsomely-produced period piece led the pack along with Todd Haynes' "Carol," another handsomely-produced period piece. Both films garnered nine nominations each including Best Picture. "Bridge of Spies" and "Carol" will duke it out with "Spotlight," Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's "The Revenant" (eight nominations), and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" (five nominations) for the Best Picture trophy.
So where's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" you ask? They're relegated to the technical categories. Apparently, sequels, no matter how great they are, can't compete with originals.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just announced there nominations and there’s quite a lot to process, so let’s start from the top. Not far behind is Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s revenge epic The Revenant with eight nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Editing.
What may come as a surprise to some is that Adam McKay’s comedy-drama about the 2008 financial crisis did rather well. It may have only received five nominations, but they were all major nods: Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Christian Bale), and Best Editing. Meanwhile, the film that has...
