Dementer
Stars: Katie Groshong, Brandy Edmiston, Larry Fessenden, Eller Hall, Scott Hodges, Stephanie Kinkle | Written and Directed by Chad Crawford Kinkle
Cults are a classic horror film troupe for good reason… In Dementer our protagonist Katie (Katie Groshong) runs away from a cult and takes a job caring for people with special needs in a centre. Our opening scene of running naked through the woods, with some surreal horror elements is suitably tense and peculiar.
Our “low on background checks” special needs centre plays out in the manner of a fly on the wall documentary and it works rather well. Katie gets involved with the patients drawing and colouring. She seems to care about the people, and she is clearly off to a good start. She befriends one of the patients, Stephanie, in particular/ Sadly, her past seems to be just behind her. She has tried to mystically protect herself,...

Religious cults seem to be plentiful in the USA, or so the movies would have us believe. In a country where it is automatically assumed that one has a relgious belief, it would seem that fear of the devil runs deep, particularly in more isolated areas. So what happens when you've managed to escape such a cult, but the fear follows you? Can you shut out the voices? Can you truly believe it isn't real? Or will it always be inside you, a worm wrapped around your heart? In the follow up to his 2013 film Jug Face, Chad Crawford Kinkle returns with Dementer, another story of people and their strange beliefs in the backwoods of Tennesse. This time, it's the story of a woman...

Dementer is a new horror film from writer/director Chad Crawford Kinkle (Jugface) that explores the unstoppable, unpredictable nature of evil.
Katie (Katie Groshong) has recently escaped life inside a strange cult (led by genre fave Larry Fessenden), and is looking to make a fresh start. Living out of her car, and with nowhere to go, she finds a glimpse of hope when she secures a job at a disability resource center. She seems to fit right in—she interacts well with the residents, displays an air of responsibility, and genuinely feels like she might be able to make a positive contribution in this role.
However, Katie’s ties to her past life might not be that easily severed. Within days of starting her new position, she begins experiencing sudden headaches, which lead to flashbacks of the world that she left behind. The flashbacks themselves feel like puzzle pieces to...

Chad Crawford Kinkle's horror flick Dementer, starring Katie Groshong and Larry Fessenden, will be available on digital platforms March 2nd from Dark Star Pictures. The official trailer was released today. Check it out below. Our own, Dr. Shelagh Rowan-Legg, caught Dementer when it played at the Nashville Film Festival back in 2019. Here are a couple excerpts from her review, followed by the press release. The result is what you might call an analog portrayal of cult and ritual, of belief and trauma, one that relies on its actors and post-production sound editing to convey its story; I write this as a complement, as the films relies on its wits and an audience that is keen to follow where the literal and metaphorical...

Ahead of Dementer's world premiere screening on October 10th at the Nashville Film Festival, we have a look at the official trailer and poster:
"The sophomore feature from writer/director Chad Crawford Kinkle, whose 2013 film Jug Face made waves across the indie genre scene, Dementer is daring, full-force arthouse horror that pulls absolutely no punches.
Katie, a young woman determined to do something positive with her life after fleeing from a backwoods cult, takes a job at a center for special needs adults. Desperately attempting to live a normal life, she is overwhelmed by signs that “the devils” are after Stephanie (newcomer Stephanie Kinkle), a woman with Down Syndrome that she now cares for.
Using writings from a strange notebook, Katie creates rituals to ward away the evil while taking care of Stephanie at the center and in her home. But nothing seems to work, and Stephanie is becoming sicker with each passing day.

"I don't sleep much anyway..." Smithland Films has debuted an official trailer for this indie horror thriller called Dementer, the second feature from filmmaker Chad Crawford Kinkle (of Jug Face previously). This is premiering at the Nashville Film Festival coming up this month, hence this new trailer to promote that festival debut. After fleeing a creepy backwoods cult, a woman tries to turn her life around by taking a job in a home for special needs adults only to discover that she must face her dark past to save a down syndrome girl. Described as a "daring, full-force arthouse horror that pulls absolutely no punches." Starring Katie Groshong, Stephanie Kinkle, Brandy Edmiston, Eller Hall, and Larry Fessenden. An odd trailer. This reminds me a bit of Ben Wheatley's Kill List, especially with that eerie blood logo. Check it out below. Here's the first trailer (+ teaser poster) for Chad Crawford Kinkle's Dementer,...

We’re just over a month away from Halloween and there are no less than four major UK horror festivals on the horizon, so what better time to take a look at you choice of “home video” horror – with ten of the best independent horror movies to rent or buy on TheHorrorShow.TV
The Top 10, in no particular order, are…
Camp Dread
Mixing the slasher movie with reality TV doesn’t seem like the best idea for horror movie, especially considering the mainstream backlash against both genres, but surprisingly Camp Dread manages to overcome it’s much-maligned origins. Of course any slasher movie set at a summer camp is going to be filled with the tropes of the genre and this film is no different – although this time around the stereotypes and cliches which would typically hinder such a production actually work in its favour. Written by: Chad Crawford Kinkle
Directed by: Chad Crawford Kinkle
Cast: Lauren Ashley Carter (Ada), Daniel Manche (Jessaby), Larry Fessenden (Sustin), Sean Bridgers (Dawai), Alex Maizus (Emaciated Boy), Sean Young (Loriss), Mathieu Whitman (Bodey)
I gotta say that this movie could be about anything. Let me present a few possible scenarios: A poor, homely, simpleton girl that is abused by those more fortunate than her, and hopefully, she executes a cold and calculating plan of revenge using supernatural means? Nope. Maybe a backwoods girl possessed by something unholy whose only salvation is an exorcism by a righteous crusader? No, but closer than the first option.
“Jug Face” begins with Ada, a young rural girl getting crudely deflowered in the woods by her boyfriend perhaps, unfortunately more like her brother. A few weeks later, she suspects and then confirms that she is pregnant.

On Friday, October 25th, we took a trip to Sheffield, South Yorkshire, to enjoy three days of premier horror programming at the Celluloid Screams film festival. Take a look in here for some of the fear-filled sights and sounds to come from the Sheffield Showroom Workstation this year.

Director, writer, producer, and actor Larry Fessenden has slogged his way to becoming a prominent force in the horror genre over the course of more than two decades. His first film to really start turning heads was the provocative thriller No Telling (1991). He secured his place on the horror film map by writing, directing, and starring in the gritty vampire nightmare Habit (1995), which was followed by Wendigo (2001) and The Last Winter (2006).
His acting roles have ranged from brief glimpses in films like Martin Scorsese's Bringing Out The Dead (1999), Brad Anderson's Session 9 (2001), Jim Jarmusch's Broken Flowers (2005), and Neil Jordan’s The Brave One (2007), to leading roles in Glenn McQuaid's I Sell The Dead (2008) and Chad Crawford Kinkle's Jug Face (2013). I want to say Chad Crawford Kinkle’s backwoods thriller Jug Face prepared me for Jim Mickle’s remake of We Are What We Are, but the latter had just a little more, um, bite to it – slowly peeling back each dirty secret that the Parker family has been hiding. As far as English language remakes go, Mickle and writing buddy Nick Damici pay proper tribute to Jorge Michel Grau’s original Spanish language film while injecting the most red, white, and blue blooded influence possible. I expected nothing less from the duo who created an underground horror hit in Stake Land, and it’s reassuring to see that Mickle’s keen, stylistic eye wasn’t just some beginners luck. Jim Mickle brings a dirty, grimy vision to his horror films, setting up the dark, disturbing secrets of the Parker family with a nasty Southern twang.

Backwoods cult communities – is there anything creepier? Just imagine a bunch of brainwashed radicals living miles away from civility, abiding by their own communal rules and ignoring the social norms that govern most “typical” Americans. I don’t know, that sounds pretty horrifying to me, right? People that make their own rules, justify them, and treat them as common law – especially when there’s a bloody pit holding a creature who is basically pulling all the strings? Oh, did that catch your attention? Welcome to the country bumpkin world of Jug Face, where if you see yourself sculpted into the water jug you’re drinking out of, then you’re shit out of luck.

Thank you for taking the time to talk with us. Can you tell us how you became involved with Jug Face? Was it something you heard about and auditioned for or did they reach out to you specifically for this part?
Lauren Ashley Carter: Thanks for having me! Andrew Van Den Houten and I have worked together previously on two films, Rising Stars and The Woman. He asked me to read the script and tell him what I thought. I called him after I finished and told him I really liked it.

In writer-director Chad Crawford Kinkle’s moody horror drama “Jug Face,” Lauren Ashley Carter plays Ada, a pregnant, panicked teenager who tries to escape her backwoods community when she realizes she may be the latest person to be sacrificed to a mysterious pit that the townsfolk believe has healing powers. In real life, though, Carter is a young New York City actress paying her dues and just starting out in her career climb, which means there are still commercial auditions for a feminine hygiene product superhero (more on that later). For ShockYa, Brent Simon recently had a chance to talk to Carter one-on-one, about “Jug Face,” horror movies, stage fright, auditioning [ Read More ]

Title: Jug Face Director: Chad Crawford Kinkle Starring: Lauren Ashley Carter, Larry Fessenden, Sean Young, Daniel Manche, Mathieu Whitman, Sean Bridgers A rising tide of dread and desperation marks “Jug Face,” a low-budget, independent slice of Southern Gothic characterized by a solid technical package. The freshman feature effort of writer-director Chad Crawford Kinkle, this psychologically rooted horror film recalls the movies of Lucky McKee — and with good reason, since the “May” and “Sick Girl” director serves as an executive producer here. The story unfolds in a rural, backwoods community, where moonshine peddled once a month to city folk seems to be the only connection to the outside world. Teenager [ Read More ]

The Deep South can be a very strange place for outsiders. Mired in traditions and rituals that may now seem foolish or outdated, it is still a ripe place to cull old legends anew, projecting them up on the silver screen for a scare or two. The familiar, often sensationalized, role that cultish backwoods communities have played for decades in horror films is inverted in Chad Crawford Kinkle's feature debut Jug Face. Moving away from the usually gruesome antagonistic role they have been known to play against often bright-eyed and bushy-tailed northerners out 'a frolicking, Kinkle instead focuses his sympathies squarely on the tight-knit community itself, and how such a twisted, insular folk can be born. Grim and heavy in atmosphere right off the bat,...

Face of Another: Kinkle’s Backwoods Horror a Promising, Faulty Debut
Like a low-fi hybrid of Winter’s Bone and Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery comes Chad Crawford Kinkle’s debut, Jug Face. Lucky McKee’s name listed in the producer credits (as well as featuring Sean Bridgers from The Woman) perhaps promises more redneck grotesqueries than the film actually delivers, but one can’t deny that Kinkle has crafted an intriguing creepathon that’s just a bit too rough around the edges to be as effective as its potential suggests. While the film establishes an enjoyable, foreboding tension, the film loses its element of surprise about the time overtly supernatural elements are introduced, unable to maintain the subtle sense of insane, isolated communities it has so painstakingly prepared.

The anthropologist Margaret Mead played an instrumental role in dragging America out of its post–WWII frigidity by documenting the sexual mores of distant tribes. We should therefore consider ourselves lucky she never studied the Tennessee hayseeds featured in Chad Crawford Kinkle's debut feature, Jug Face, or we might still be wearing petticoats and sock garters. Ada (Lauren Ashley Carter) lives in one of those rural fundamentalist enclaves occasionally featured on PBS, where moonshine is distilled and roadkill is considered no-joke dining. Here, for an added bonus, siblings are viable romantic partners and those who transgress against the desires of the monster residing in a nearby pit are flogged and left to be horribly devoured. The creature, beneficiary of a blood pac...

Chicago – Chad Crawford Kinkle’s Slamdance hit “Jug Face,” opening this Friday, August 9, 2013 at the La Grange Theatre just outside Chicago and now available On Demand, would have made a great episode of “Masters of Horror.” It has the feel of a memorable short story with its memorable use of setting and sketch of a very unique community on the other side of civilization.
Yes, there are still close-knit communities in the woods who pray to Gods and demons not recognized on public access TV and Kinkle’s film captures something often mesmerizing about these people who could be relatives of the lunatics of “The Wicker Man”.
