Novelizations became popular at a time when home video was either unavailable or just too expensive to own. So these books were, in essence, cheap keepsakes after seeing and enjoying a film in theaters. In the case of 1981’s The Funhouse, however, the novelization came out first. This was on account of the film, directed by Tobe Hooper, taking longer to complete than originally anticipated. It seemed unwise to release the book first, considering the risk of spoilers. As it turned out, though, it was hard to spoil anything when the novel and film were as different as night and day.
Dean Koontz, who used multiple pseudonyms throughout the early years of his career, had yet to achieve any substantial success when he agreed to write the novelization for The Funhouse. On top of the financial incentive, the proposal of adapting Larry Block’s screenplay simply intrigued Koontz. After all,...

Anyone who has read any of my writing on Daily Dead or listened to me on the Corpse Club podcast probably already knows what a Tobe Hooper fan I am, and it’s his 1981 slasher The Funhouse that first started me down the path of reassessing his work and made me fall completely in love with him as a filmmaker. It’s rarely talked about as one of his greater efforts and is too often dismissed as a generic slasher, a characterization with which I could not disagree more. Not only is it a great horror film, but it’s also my favorite film from my favorite filmmaker.
Though he's something of a brand name and considered a "Master of Horror," Tobe Hooper has made only two movies that get much love and respect. The first, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, is rightfully considered a classic, albeit one that appeals primarily to diehard horror fans.

It’s no stretch to say that Rusty Cundieff’s 1995 horror film “Tales from the Hood” has become a cult classic in its own right. The film launched a franchise that now includes three films. The latest installment — led by Candyman Tony Todd — premiered on the SyFy network this month, and can now be streamed on Amazon Prime and other VOD platforms. “Tales from the Hood 3” comes with the same degree of social commentary as the previous two films.
From a searing indictment of gentrification featuring a murderous realtor (London Brown) to a right-wing nutjob (Cooper Huckabee) who attempts to protect his property from a diverse America, the movie hits a lot of nerves at once. Once again, Spike Lee serves as executive producer, while Darin Scott co-directed and wrote the last two entries with Cundieff.

Everyone needs an escape from time to time. A place apart from reality, where the strange whisper with the miraculous, and cheap trinkets are bartered with greasy denizens of the night. What better place to set a horror film than the carnival, where the potential for mystery awaits around every crimson tent and distorted mirror? If you’re so inclined, step right up and buy a ticket to The Funhouse (1981), the late Tobe Hooper’s wonderful tribute to the seedy shadowed world of carnies, caramel apples, and Universal monsters.
Released in March by Universal, The Funhouse underperformed at the box office, but critics (including Gene Siskel) admired it for focusing on suspense and thrills rather than gruesome mayhem. In a landscape littered with severed limbs and phallically inclined urban legends, Mr. Hooper used his genius to once again showcase the underbelly of the American psyche, this time with a major studio’s dollars.

Time can be a hell of a drug, especially when it comes to the projected image. There’s an inherent danger in revisiting a film we have fond memories of; is it as good as we recall? Conversely, can a film improve after an initial viewing, one that perhaps was initially dismissed with a shrug and a wave of the hand? Case in point: actor David Keith’s directorial debut, The Curse (1987), a film that inspired nothing in me beyond guffaws 30 years ago. But that was then; now it inspires a sense of awe, because if you’ve ever wondered what an American-flavored Lucio Fulci film would look like, clear a spot in your collection for the class clown of the Class of ’87.

Starve is a film from Griff Furst. Described by some reviewers as Saw-style torture porn (THR), this indie horror title is soon to darken DVD store shelves. The release is scheduled for this summer. And, the film stars Bobby Camp (The Final Destination), Mariah Bonner (The Social Network), Cooper Huckabee and Johnny McPhail. Also, this title was supposedly released on television, but this film fan could find no evidence of this. Starve has shown at film festivals, including Spain's Sitges International Film Festival, though. A preview of the film's DVD release is hosted here. In the story, three friends are kidnapped. They are trapped with several other people, in an abandoned building. Here, they are starved, unless they can find the fortitude and amorality to kill another. A loudspeaker encourages everyone's darker side to come out and kill! Mti Home Video will handle the release. And, Starve will be available on DVD,...

“The Funhouse” (1981)
Directed By: Tobe Hooper
Written By: Larry Block
Starring: Elizabeth Berridge (Amy Harper), Shawn Carson (Joe Harper), Jeanne Austin (Mrs. Harper), Jack McDermott (Mr. Harper), Cooper Huckabee (Buzz), Largo Woodruff (Liz), Miles Chapin (Richie),Sylvia Miles (Madame Zena), David Carson (Geek), Sonia Zomina (Big Lady), Kevin Conway (Carnival Barber), Herb Robins (Carnival Manager), Mona Agar (Strip Show Dancer), Wayne Doba (The Monster), William Finley (Marco the Magnificent)
With Tobe Hooper having many popular films in his directing filmography, The Funhouse falls by the way-side on being familiar in horror. I enjoyed this early Hooper movie a lot. It takes many of the various slasher elements and adds the right mix of camp and bloodshed for a delicate treat for viewers. Opening up at a limited scope of theaters, it had a respectable opening in 1981. It is available on all media formats; it...

One of the heaviest ensembles in a film this year, Django Unchained is Quentin Tarantino’s latest work. Tobe Hooper has had a very diverse career, and I say that with nary a blurb of hyperbole. For every The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, you get Crocodile. I love the majority of his films because they give me the feeling of warm and fuzzy nostalgia. But, with The Funhouse which came out at the height of the slasher craze, he was still shaping his now wild career. And the film is drastically different from some of his other films, yet it still retains some of Hooper’s erraticism. There are crazed characters and most of the carnival folk feel very, very real. Hell, the carnival feels real, it’s like it may have visited your hometown. It’s also a great slow burn film, you get to...

Cooper Huckabee might not be a household name, but I guarantee you would recognize the veteran character actor if you saw him. He’s usually playing the grizzled old villain in things like HBO’s True Blood and TNT’s Major Crimes nowadays, but it wasn’t always that way. Way back in 1981, Cooper Huckabee got a chance to play the muscular male star, Buzz, in Tobe Hooper’s horror classic The Funhouse. Not only is Huckabee one of the kindest and most gracious actors to ever grace the screen, but his role in the cult classic film also caught the eye of Quentin Tarantino, landing him a gig in the director’s upcoming film Django Unchained.

Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse failed to make the impact his earlier Texas Chainsaw Massacre did on horror audiences, but still delivered a few solid shocks for viewers in 1981. Much like Chainsaw, it consists of twisted characters and fun-loving youngsters being brutalized by them. However, this time around carnival workers get a bad rap versus backwoods rednecks like in Hooper's 1974 spine-chiller. Seeing The Funhouse now on Blu-ray doesn't quite deliver the same jarring surprises it did thirty years ago. The horror genre has seen it all since then.

Director Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Poltergeist) pays affectionate tribute to various classic horror movies in this tale of two teenage couples who spend the night in a sleazy carnival funhouse.

Halloween 2 & 3, TerrorVision, The Funhouse and other forgotten gems like Death Valley and The Island, these are all films that Cliff MacMillan holds near and dear to his heart. Cliff is the one responsible for bringing us all of these great titles to DVD/Blu-ray through Shout! Factory's genre arm, Scream Factory and Cliff is the first to admit that he might be being a little bit selfish in his work. But these titles are just the tip of the iceberg for what Scream Factory has in store for us. We grabbed a few minutes with Cliff to talk about Shout Factory's recent and future genre output. Here's what he had to say...
FEARnet: So why don't you want my kid to go to college?
Cliff MacMillan: (laughs) It's only going to get worse next year, I'm sorry.
Why did Scream Factory release their Halloween 2 Blu-ray so close to Universal's?...

The biggest story of the last week, by a mile, was the debut of the first trailer for Quentin Tarantino's sure-to-be-controversial Western "Django Unchained." Starring Jamie Foxx as the title character, a slave out to rescue his wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), with bounty hunter Christoph Waltz as his mentor and companion Dr. King Schultz, and Leonardo DiCaprio as Calvin Candie, one of the villains, it was already one of the most anticipated films of the year beforehand, but the excellent teaser has certainly raised expectations even further.
With the trailer now having been out there for a few days, we thought it was a good time to dig into a little, and highlight some of the less obvious moments in the clip -- hints and glimpses of some of the characters who'll play key roles in the script, as well as one example of the kind of Easter Egg...

Capping off The Weinstein Company press presentation this evening was what was arguably the longest look of the trio of films they unveiled, Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained." And for better or worse, it's pure Tarantino through and through. Longtime fans of the director are going to be thrilled, and for anyone hoping he's changed his visual approach, or swapped out his longstanding influences for something different, they might be advised to skip this one entirely, even though it will be their loss.
Mixing real locations with what are clearly soundstages, "Django Unchained" makes its debt to Sergio Leone clearly known, but the rest is all Qt. The reel we saw opened with Christoph Waltz's Dr. King Schultz, traveling through the woods in his mobile medical practice -- complete with a giant tooth, hilariously swinging on a spring from the roof -- coming across a group of slaves, chained...

"Twilight" actress Kristen Stewart has emerged as a potential candidate to star in Jaume Collet-Sera's live-action "Akira" remake at Warner Bros. Pictures.

Cooper Huckabee, who recently starred as Joe Lee Mickens on "True Blood", is apparently the latest to join the cast of Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained".

Finally! Last night’s episode of True Blood gave fans the relief they’ve been waiting for, the much-talked-about-but-never-happening Eric and Sookie hookup. Unfortunately, there are some clouds on the horizon, with Gran’s omen, the threat of more witches, the relief will be short lived. The opening scene was more action packed than usual with Tommy (Marshall Allman) finally killing his father Joe Lee (Cooper Huckabee) out of self-defense and accidentally killing his mother in the cross fire. We all know that if a shifter murders a member of their own family they have the power to shift into humans. There are certainly some interesting story lines to explore with Tommy. It also looks like he and Sam (Sam Trammell) have more in common, although no one really cares. Creepy baby Mikey is still at it. Arlene (Carrie Preston) and Terry (Todd Lowe) decided to perform an exorcism on their house like in Poltergeist.

The Funhouse
Stars: Elizabeth Berridge, Shawn Carson, Jeanne Austin,Cooper Huckabee, David Carson | Written by Lawrence Block | Directed by Tobe Hooper
As a horror fan I always like going back to the older movies that I missed in that past. The Funhouse is one of these so now it’s been released on Blu-ray it’s the perfect opportunity for me to watch and review it.
I found The Funhouse to be quite a confusing movie in parts, to the point it seems to be confused as to what it’s trying to achieve. It starts like a Halloween clone but this proves to be a misdirection to confuse the watcher making the opening scenes more a homage to the famous Halloween opener. These scenes are important for later though as it builds up a rivalry between one of the teens that get stuck in the funhouse and her younger brother.

Out of everyone in "True Blood," Lafayette has it right: Stay away from the supernatural, hooka, or be ready for some ugly consequences coming your way. He does his best to set things right in Season Four's fourth episode, "I'm Alive and on Fire," among the witches and the vampires, but the magic involved takes its own turn. Equally, and thankfully, keeping her cool is Sookie -- resourceful, helpful and not entirely in distress. Paquin seems to be having more fun with her character this season, giving her a personality but steering clear of caricature territory. In fact, most of the characters have settled nicely into the campy Southern gothic tableau, and while "True Blood" still deals with some fairly messed up plots, the show is funnier of late -- more comfortable in its own skin, as last night's episode showed. The humor is welcome, and we need more of it.

The Funhouse (Original Release Date: 13 March 1981)
The Funhouse isn't the movie I wanted it to be. I mean that as no offense to the movie. It's just that for much of my life, I've been trying to find a specific movie I saw as a child. Every few years or so, I will think I've found it, only to watch my find and be disappointed when it turns out not to be the one I hoped it would be. The Funhouse was one of the two most recent candidates for this lost movie from my childhood. The other, Hell Night, is also a 1981 release. (I've peeked ahead and determined both that I've seen Hell Night before and that it isn't the one I'm looking for, either.)
A horror fan would probably classify both Funhouse and Hell Night as entries in the “Teenkill” subgenre. From the title alone you can probably...

This week's episode of True Blood (TV) wasn't as impressive to me as last week's. Maybe that's because we're still in the middle of everyone's "plans" and nothing has been accomplished yet. Well, Tara (Rutina Wesley) gets to beat Franklin's (James Frain) head in, but who knows if that'll actually do anything to him or not. Probably just make him wail and moan some more when he wakes up. King Russell (Denis O'Hare) brings Sookie (Anna Paquin) back from Alcide's (Joe Manganiello), intent on having a little game of 20 questions with her. Bill (Stephen Moyer) is handed off to his melodramatic sire, Lorena (Marianna Klaveno), for punishment for betraying the King's trust. Both Bill and Sookie plead with Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) for help -- both begging him to save the other -- but coldly brushes them off, in favor of siding with Russell. Sookie thinks this is just an act for the King's sake,...

We're halfway through the third season of HBO's "True Blood", and things have reached a fever pitch. Eric spurning Sookie's pleas for help, Lorena torturing Bill to the point of near death, and Sam's valiant efforts to save his younger brother, Tommy, are just the tip of the iceberg. Want more? Wherever Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) goes, trouble follows. And trouble usually has fangs, fur, or any combination of the two. Sunday's episode of True Blood (TV), finds our heroine still under the protective watch of the werewolf hottie, Alcide (Joe Manganiello), as they narrowly escape the rival wolf pack lair, where they watched his ex, Debbie (Brit Morgan) branded into the service of the King of Mississippi, Russell Edgington (Denis O'Hare). Again I am amazed at the splendid casting this show has managed to procure. Nearly every roll is exactly cast buy an actor or actress who fits my imagination of the book characters. They hit a new level of awesome with casting Manganiello as Alcide. Anyway, Sookie wants Alcide to continue helping her get closer to the vampire who branded all those wolves in the club, but he wants to consult his "pack master," Colonel Flood (Grainger Hines) first.

Are you starting to salivate for the next episode of "True Blood" on Sunday? So are we and waiting sucks! Here are few stories that are helping us get over hump day!
HBO is shopping around reruns to commercial cable networks. That would be an easy sell for the network, but a few previously sold HBO shows didn't do very well in repeats at their new homes: "True Blood" creator Alan Ball's "Six Feet Under" for Bravo, "Entourage" for Spike, and "The Sopranos" for A&E. [Los Angeles Times]
The fact that "True Blood" broke the Emmy vampire curse and got nominated for outstanding drama series was good news for fans and HBO. The bad news is that one of its competitors is Showtime's "Dexter." Of course, we're rabid fans of both shows. Well, our pals at FEARnet did an "Emmy Death Match" pitting the two shows against each other. We won't ruin the ending for you,...

HBO just released the official loglines for True Blood‘s five August episodes and, as per usual, they’re pretty damn spoilery.

Season Three of Alan Ball's "True Blood" has been hot and heavy and loaded with surprises, and from the synopses released today by HBO for Episodes 31-35, it shows no signs of slowing down in the slightest.
Thanks go to The Ausiello Files on EW.com for the lowdown; just beware that spoilers abound in the summaries. Sadly, these episodes take us almost to the end of the season (it's short but sweet), and there's no mention of Franklin. I hope we haven't seen the last of him; he's my favorite new character so far!

After last week's frenetic pace, it was good to have a return to form with a more focused episode that was well-paced and funny. Anna Paquin continues to be ridiculously bad even as her co-stars hone their chops (though I must give tiny props for a chuckle over her Bill imitation). I don't know what those Golden Globe voters were thinking, but I hope they lay off the cheap champagne this year and award someone who can genuinely act. Hell, Kristen Bauer conveys more emotion just putting on lipstick in the ladies' room. Stephen Moyer's well-played amusement at Cooter's name had me giggling at the outset, Deborah Ann Woll is a joy to watch as she parades Jessica's rumbling emotions and Nelsan Ellis' Lafayette delivers the serious and deadpan both with natural ease. Is it just me who listens to Skarsgård's every syllable for a hint of his delicious accent?...
