For nearly a decade, Silent Hill existed only in our restless dreams, with Konami refusing to finance any new projects and not even facilitating the rerelease of previous games. Sure, there was a spark of hope when Hideo Kojima revealed P.T. and his plans for a franchise reinvention, but that promising endeavor was soon replaced by Pachinko Machines and crossovers in other games. That’s why, for the longest time, fans had come to accept that their favorite survival horror series was finally dead.
Of course, that all changed with Konami’s recent Silent Hill Transmission, which revealed not one, but five simultaneous projects meant to bring the series back to its former glory! As a life-long fan of the series (Silent Hill was actually what got me into horror in the first place), I was naturally ecstatic. And with the cursed town possibly receiving new arrivals in the near future,...

Our lookbacks at the screen adaptations of Stephen King find us at Thinner, starring Robert John Burke...
The film: Morbidly obese and deeply unpleasant lawyer Billy Halleck (Robert John Burke) runs over an old gypsy woman with his car, distracted by his wife Heidi (Lucinda Jenney) who is doing something rather rude to him. His ties to the local law enforcement, Judge Cary Rossington (John Horton) and Chief of Police Duncan Hopley (Daniel von Bargen), means the case is dismissed before it gets to court. However, the old woman’s father (Michael Constantine) has a different kind of justice in mind. He curses Halleck with the word ‘thinner’ and soon, Halleck begins to lose weight at a dangerous and ever-increasing rate.

The third Children Of The Corn movie is a step up, and a really fun movie...
The film: After the disappearance of their father, brothers Eli (Daniel Cerny) and Joshua (Ron Melendez), are adopted by a Chicago couple, William (Jim Metzler) and Amanda (Nancy Lee Grahn). The brothers are from Gatlin, Nebraska and are used to more conservative ways, but slowly Joshua acclimatises to his new environment. However, Eli is less keen to shed the religion of He Who Walks Behind The Rows and begins scheming to lure in his fellow students with his magic brainwashing corn.

Our lookbacks at the screen adaptations of Stephen King land at Children Of The Corn 2...
One of the more interesting aspects of these revisits so far has been how the sequels to different films have adapted to work without source material from Stephen King (Creepshow 2 aside). Mostly, they’ve not worked very well, but the Children Of The Corn franchise seems very determined to see if it can succeed in its seven further instalments. I like a challenge and have a morbid curiosity when it comes to these movies so I shall be watching all of them. Ask me again after the eighth Children Of The Corn movie as to whether this was a good idea or not.

Composer Daniel Licht, who specialized in the horror genre and scored all eight seasons of the creepy Showtime series Dexter, has died. He was 60.
Licht died Wednesday at his home in Topanga Canyon, Calif., after a battle with sarcoma, his representatives, Seth Kaplan at Evolution Music Partners and Jana Davidoff at Impact24 PR, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Television, film, and video games composer Daniel Licht, best known for his work on Showtime’s “Dexter,” died late Wednesday following a battle with cancer. He was 60. Originally from Detroit, Licht’s first major work was scoring the 1991 horror film “Children of the Night.” His compositions caught the attention of Clive Barker, who tapped Licht to score “Hellraiser: Bloodline.” Licht scored numerous horror films but also forayed into more mainstream fare like the Ben Stiller film “Permanent Midnight,” and indies like “The Winner” and “Cowboy Up.” Licht’s work on “Dexter” was well regarded, and each season’s soundtrack was released for sale.

A celebration of film and television music was once again at the heart of Krakow’s Film and Music Festival, now in its eighth year.
Running from May 27-31, the event brought together more than 58 international composers - including Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love, Mon Roi), Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones), Jeff Beal (House of Cards), John Lunn (Downton Abbey) and Trevor Morris (The Borgias, The Tudors) – for a culmination of performances, panels and master classes.
“Composers are not often given the attention they deserve,” said Artistic Director Robert Piaskowski. “So we wanted to create a space that presents film music as art, and where audiences can come and appreciate a score’s symphonic sounds.”
Piaskowski is not alone in his interests. The festival now aligns itself as the start of the season, with similar musical events taking place in Tenerife and Cordoba in July and Vienna and Gent (that also hosts the World Soundtrack Awards) in October...

Everyone has been concerned about finding out who'll end up playing Doctor Strange in Marvel's planned adaptation, that the following nugget from San Diego Comic Con seems to have gone unnoticed. During the “Behind the Music: Crime, Death and Resurrection” panel -- which also included Jeff Russo (Fargo), James Levine (American Horror Story), Daniel Licht (Dexter), Brian Reitzell (Hannibal), and Steve Jablonsky (Transformers franchise) -- Scott Derrickson's Sinister/Deliver us From Evil composer Chris Young stated that he looked forward to working with the director on his next project. Perhaps not aware of the level of secrecy Marvel like to maintain when it comes to their movies, he elaborated when pushed: “Am I gong to do Doctor Strange? Oh, I better had. All I know is, I spoke to [Scott Derrickson] and did a little pitch on the phone and he kind of laughed. He didn’t say, ‘and by the way,...

While Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch was busy dodging Doctor Strange rumors during the Dreamworks panel, composer Christopher Young let a few tidbits slip on the upcoming superhero film in the middle of "Behind the Music: Crime, Death and Resurrection." The panel consisted of six film and television composers - Jeff Russo (Fargo), James Levine (American Horror Story), Daniel Licht (Dexter), Brian Reitzell (Hannibal), Steve Jablonsky (Transformers franchise), and Young (Deliver Us From Evil) - discussing their work on various projects. During the conversation, the frequent Scott Derrickson collaborator commented on his possible involvement in the director's 'Marvellous' next project. "Behind the Music: Crime, Death and Resurrection," moderated by Salem's Shane West, was an entertaining look into the world of scoring film and TV (and video games, which is apparently the most secretive of all mediums), but the highlight was when Young hinted that he might be continuing...

The montage that opens every episode of Dexter is an interesting example of how showing every day images from certain angles can make innocuous actions suddenly look like potential crime scenes. Paired with composer Rolfe Kent‘s creepy theme full of Asian and European instruments like a ukulele, bouzouki and saz, Dexter‘s open is the perfect way to prepare to dive inside of the mind of a serial killer who ties his shoes just like you or me. But the violent images in the open (and the show itself) also bleed into Dexter‘s score as created by composer Daniel Licht. Dexter (Michael C. Hall) prefers a surgical approach when dealing with his victims, and Licht reflects this preference in the show’s score by taking surgical instruments and turning them into musical instruments that pair surprisingly well with the more classical orchestration. Using scissors and knives as percussive elements helped Licht give Dexter the ominous...

Daniel Licht was "really happy" to be given the job of composing the main title theme music for the new Sundance small-town drama “The Red Road" as well as the score for each of its six episodes. And just why was this extra work so important to him? As he explained during our recent webcam chat (watch below), he had spent eight years scoring “Dexter” but was not responsible for that drama’s Emmy-nominated main title theme. -Break- Dish all the Emmy races right now in our notorious forums He admitted to being “a little disappointed” at being brought onto that crime drama after Showtime had commissioned Rolfe Kent to compose the main title tune. However, he was quick to add, “Rolfe did a great job, so kudos to him.” Licht is set to soon begin work on the second season of “The Red Road,” which he explains has a “completely different” score than “Dexter,...

Dexter, Season 8, Episode 12, ‘Remember the Monsters?’
Written By Scott Buck & Manny Coto
Directed By Steve Shill
Airs Sundays, 8pm on Showtime
When you begin dreading the final episode of a show you love, it should really be an understandable reaction, one born out of fear and sadness that it is coming to end. Thanks to a collective brain melting session in the offices of Showtime’s Dexter however, this dread has come about due to the pessimistic angst that the closing chapter, the final lines, will be utterly botched and thus conclude the tainting of a once grand story with amateur nonsense. There’s no doubting that the awful quality of Season Eight has left an indelible mark, meaning that anyone going into the grand finale should be wary of being hopeful. Bearing no expectations is probably the best way to go into ‘Remember the Monsters’. Doing that, perversely, means...

We've heard of composers employing strange and macabre instruments for genre projects before (Daniel Licht's work on "Dexter" comes to mind), but they've got nothing on Marco Beltrami, who used animal bones and other assorted oddities to convey horror in the score for World War Z.
From the Press Release:
Composer Marco Beltrami is bringing the clacking of teeth and the wailing of sirens to his score for World War Z, in theaters June 21, 2013. The story of the zombie apocalypse, World War Z stars Brad Pitt, James Badge Dale, and Mireille Emos. Beltrami based all the melody, harmony, and rhythm of the score on the U.S. Emergency Broadcast System signal siren and then incorporated non-traditional percussive elements, like the sound of animal skulls and teeth being mashed together, creating an atypical sonic palette, blending the rhythms of bone-on-bone with a full orchestra. The score album for World War Z...

Dexter, Season 7, Episode 3: “Buck the System”
Written by Jace Richdale
Directed by Stefan Schwartz
Airs Sundays at 9pm (Et) on Showtime
At the tail end of this week’s episode of Dexter, something wonderfully familiar occurred: a change in direction of plot dictated by well penned conversational exchange, followed by a distinctive musical accompaniment, and one ambiguous, brief reflective piece of narration by the titular character. This is a classic chord from the show’s golden era, and its arrival is not egregious or out of place. It’s like we’ve simply been transported back to a better time.
This quiet, well judged conclusion to the hour wraps up a story strand and murkily sets in motion another, one that can quite comfortably be described as unpredictable, yet another sign that the show has its shooting boots back on. After opening with another callback to old times, namely humorously psychotic daydreams,...

In the first two parts of a three-part web series, developer Arkane Studios explores what went down before Dishonored's supernatural assassin Corvo began walking the path of vengeance. In the first one, "The Awakening," a philosopher ponders his life's ambitions only to discover that everything he worked for was wrong.
The trio of shorts are scored by Dexter composer Daniel Licht who also supplies the music for the game.
You can check out the second short after the jump.
The second short, "The Hand That Feeds," shows the true costs of accepting the supernatural gifts offered by the Outsider.
Dishonored will be available on October 9th for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 from Bethesda Softworks and Arkane Studios.

Bethesda Softworks' Dishonored is one of the most hotly anticipated game releases of the fall. When it's released on October 9th, it will be the first game from Bethesda since last year's near-consensus Game of the Year, The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. Dishonored will bring a stealth twist to the open-world gameplay that made The Elder Scrolls and Fallout (Bethesda's other big series) instant classics. Bethesda has sunk a lot of money into the game's presentation, pegging Dexter's Daniel Licht to compose the soundtrack and hiring big name voice actors like Susan Sarandon, Chloe Grace Moretz, Princess Leia, and Wormtongue. Luckily, we won't have to wait for the game to come out the get a sneak peek of what to expect from this team. Bethesda are releasing a three-part web miniseries called Dishonored: Tales from Dunwall. It features Licht's music and a narration from Moretz accompanying some beautiful hand-drawn animation from the Psyop studio.

After multiple delays, it looks like Silent Hill: Book of Memories is finally ready for release. The full game is expected to be available on October 16th, but Konami has announced that a demo will be released tomorrow:
“The exclusive, single-player taster of the first Silent Hill title for the Sony handheld, features the first two zones from the game and a battle against the game’s Fire Boss. The demo will give PlayStation Vita users their first chance to experience the combat and exploration elements of the new game and also features the intro cinematics, to whet the appetite for the full game’s horrifying story.
Players can select one of two characters for use in the demo and a selection of weapons and adversaries from latter stages of the full game, are also included.”
There are some conflicting reports about when the EU and North America will see the demo release.

Dishonored, the upcoming first-person stealth game from Bethesda Softworks and Arkane Studios, has been looking good in previews so far. Now, Bethesda has pulled back the curtain on the game’s voice cast, and there are some impressive names on it for sure.
Oscar winner Susan Sarandon will perform her first video game voiceover as street hermit Granny Rags, while Carrie Fisher will take the role of a voice broadcasting government propaganda over numerous loudspeakers. Other voices include Brad Dourif (Child’s Play), John Slattery (Mad Men), Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass), and Lena Headey (Game of Thrones). Daniel Licht, composer for the TV series Dexter, will also provide the game’s musical score.
More details can be found in the following press release:

This morning, Bethesda released details about the voice cast for their upcoming supernatural revenge title Dishonored, from Arkane Studios. Among the names joining the cast are a whole mess of Academy Awards and Golden Globes. So the game's gonna sound good at least, right?
More details after the jump.
A curious note: among the cast announcements, there's no one lending their pipes to the role of assassin and lead character Corvo. Does that mean Bethesda's not announcing it yet or that the character is simply going to be voiceless throughout the campaign?
In any event, we've got Susan Sarandon onboard as Granny Rags, a deranged blind woman and former aristocrat and Carrie Fisher as an announcer spouting government propaganda throughout the game. Kill Bill star Michael Madsen plays another assassin here as Daud. This isn't his first go-round with game Vo after he voiced the English dub of Yakuza for Sega.

Konami is one of a number of developers showing off upcoming titles at Comic-Con and we have a batch of new screenshots from Silent Hill: Book of Memories. Sadly, the game was delayed from its originally scheduled release date earlier this year, but Silent Hill fans will be able to get their hands on it this October.
Book of Memories is an all-new game in the Silent Hill series, with a unique premise and storyline. The story begins with a strange book that is received, inside that book is your entire life story to this point, everything that’s ever happened to you; all of your memories. You discover that by altering what’s written… you can actually change the past. You can write your own ideal history.
Book of Memories is a departure for the series, with a focus on co-operative multiplayer action rather than traditional Psychological Horror.

On June 10 at Largo at the Coronet, a very special musical event was held for Dexter. The concert featured composer Daniel Licht with special guest Rolfe Kent and an introduction from Dexter himself -- Michael C. Hall. Hall told The Hollywood Reporter that he believes that the music plays a key role in the show. “I feel like it’s a fundamental part, as much as any character,” Hall said. “The aural landscape that is created, that Dan creates, that Rolfe creates with his main title music -- it really sets the tone for us. We all know Dexter Morgan, the title character of Showtime's popular series "Dexter", but not everyone is aware of where he came from: the wonderfully twisted mind of author Jeff Lindsay, who recently finished his sixth book about the lovable serial killer, Double Dexter.
Lindsay sat down recently with Centurion Agency for a video chat about Dex's origins, his future, and more, including whether or not the creator still feels as if he "owns" the character. For us, the most interesting part of the interview is when Lindsay is asked if he'll kill off Dexter. Lindsay replies that he's wanted to several times, but his wife and agent usually talk him out of it!
As for what's coming next, Double Dexter is getting a new paperback release from Vintage on Tuesday, June 12th, and Lindsay assures us there will be a seventh book at least.

For whatever reason, it feels like the current console generation has been unkind to the survival horror genre. What developer has the knack for creating that deep sense of dread and powerlessness, while still delivering a memorable gameplay experience? I'm not talking about half-measures, either—those games that were pretty scary but had terrible combat, or had a cool mechanic here and there but figured horror meant endless gore.
Have any designers remembered what William Castle knew so well, that all you need is a house, a sound, and some commitment and you'd have the audience in the palm of your hand? And that's what the Silent Hill games are, after all: elaborate haunted houses where the things you imagine—what's around the corner, what will I do, what's next—are worse that anything the game can realize.

While originally slated for release later this year, we knew that a delay was highly likely given the lack of a firm release date and marketing push. Now we have confirmation from Konami that the release of Silent Hill: Downpour has been pushed back.
According to a report at gaming site Beef Jack, Konami has confirmed with them that the game has been delayed, with a new target release date for Q2 2012. That would mean we’d see a release sometime between March and June, but obviously the target window is also subject to change.

Sharpen your knives, ready your slides and wrap your living rooms in plastic wrap, Dexter is back! Everyone’s favorite serial killer returns for his sixth outing, newly recharged and finally freed of all that pesky, “my wife was murdered” nonsense. Not a moment too soon!
Dexter’s sixth season faces something of an uphill battle for longtime fans of the series, which struggled to find its footing in the wake of Rita’s murder and the poorly received Lumen (Julia Stiles) last year. Thankfully, sixth season premiere “Those Kinds of Things” sets a clear and re-energized tone for the season to follow from its very beginning. Viewers who caught the early tease of the episode’s opening scenes with a stabbed Dexter in distress might be disappointed to learn our killer has played his paramedic prey for chumps, but the sequence still serves up a clever way to re-introduce...
