The first surreal one-off industry gathering of 2017 was not a party, but a protest: the Women’s March at the Sundance Film Festival. In between that Saturday morning in Park City, Utah, and the year ending with a less-merry-than-usual awards season marching through the industry sexual assault reckoning, there were standout moments on the Hollywood party circuit. BioWare and Obsidian’s Old Republic games are ripe with cinematic potential. Here’s why we really want a film adaptation...
In November, Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is developing a brand new trilogy within that galaxy far, far away. This new triumvirate of Star Wars movies will be "separate from the episodic Skywalker saga" that has dominated the franchise’s cinematic output thus far.
Millions of voices from the fandom suddenly cried out in anticipation, declaring that BioWare’s Knights Of The Old Republic (Kotor) games could be the perfect blueprint for a new Star Wars film trilogy. That’s despite the fact that Lucasfilm’s announcement clearly stated that Johnson’s trilogy "will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored". Johnson himself subsequently confirmed that, as much as he loves the games,...

The great millstone around Justice League‘s neck is the uneven quality of the films that have preceded it, but it’s also the thing working in its favor. Here we have the rare movie that both benefits and suffers from the inconsistencies of its franchise. Like a house half-built and laid on a shoddy foundation, the voids where quality work may have been also exist where poor craftsmanship may have further marred the edifice. The vacuums must be filled, and open space is nothing but opportunity.
The answer to the question of whether or not Zack Snyder’s latest is a good film is illusory and ever-changing. The movie seems to exist in a quantum state of uncertainty, and like all works of art, the quality will depend upon the observer. But then even to a single observer, the merits of the film will shift and change, like a...

Mother-daughter relationships have always been the stuff of great drama. And the Oscars are no exception. Three decades ago the “Moonstruck” acting duo Olympia Dukakis and Cher both won gold for playing a strong-willed New York Italian mother and her feisty daughter. Six years later, as a mute Scottish teacher and her de facto interpreter in New Zealand, Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin repeated that twofer triumph with Jane Campion’s “The Piano.”
Onscreen mother-daughter conflict has resulted in other dual Academy Award nominations: selfless Barbara Stanwyck tricked Anne Shirley into marrying rich in tearjerker “Stella Dallas” (1937); Meryl Streep’s big mouth inspired a rebellious Julia Roberts in “August: Osage County” (2013); Piper Laurie was literally crucified by Sissy Spacek in “Carrie” (1976). André De Toth made tough-minded action films with the best of them, and this nail-biting commando mission with Michael Caine and Nigel Davenport is simply superb, one of those great action pictures that’s not widely screened. To its credit it’s not ‘feel good’ enough to be suitable for Memorial Day TV marathons.

The new design for the Klingons in “Star Trek: Discovery” has been polarizing with fans. Some are intrigued by the new take on the bellicose alien species, while others decry what they perceived to be flouting canon. On the most recent “After Trek,” lead creature designer Neville Page and prosthetics/special FX makeup effects department head Glenn Hetrick explained that Bryan Fuller, who has since departed the show, was a huge influence on what the revamped Klingons look like.

Even though now it’s almost impossible to think of a world in which Jane Goodall isn’t the preeminent primatologist, her notorious career could’ve been thwarted due to sexism. As a 27-year-old secretary with no college education, she “struck gold” when paleontologist Louis Leakey chose her to conduct research on chimpanzees in Tanzania. Leakey was looking for a fresh mind, unbiased by scientific knowledge, and Jane happened to be at the right place at the right time. More than five decades have passed since Goodall left for Africa and revolutionized the study of primates, and while her astonishing career and scientific breakthroughs are rightfully celebrated in Brett Morgen’s documentary Jane, more than being a standard biographical doc, the film serves as a cautionary tale against the perils of male chauvinism.

In 1995, Harvey Weinstein tried to give Mira Sorvino a massage, chasing her around the room when she rebuffed him. In 1996, he sexually assaulted rising French actress Judith Godrèche in a hotel room; a year later, he had another incident with Rose McGowan. In 2008, actress Louisette Geiss fled a hotel room where Weinstein tried to get her to watch him masturbate. In 2010, he tricked another French actress, Emma de Caunes, into visiting a hotel room where he exposed himself and tried to get her lie down.
In all of these accounts, Weinstein seemed to think that the relative privacy of the hotel room provided him with a sanctuary in which he could perform deplorable acts on whomever he pleased, but the context was more specific than that: In every instance, he was at a film festival.

Jan. 6, 1994, continues to be known as the day one of the biggest sports scandals in American history took place. Olympians Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan were preparing for their second Games together when Kerrigan was attacked - but was Harding involved? She holds onto her innocence to this day. Multiple documentaries have been made on the incident, and now Margot Robbie will star in Hollywood's big-budget film I, Tonya, set to hit theaters on Dec. 8. The scandal occurred over 20 years ago, yet the movie offers a new reason to revisit the case. In a time when some women choose to tear each other down for the sake of their own careers and relationships, the movie will surely open a fresh perspective. Their Relationship Harding was the first American woman to land a triple axel (the name just sounds difficult in itself) in the 1991 Us Figure Skating Championships. She ended up...

During the lengthy sit-down, the 24-year-old songstress took listeners back to the start of it all, chronicling her beginnings as a child yearning to entertain all the way to becoming a full-fledged international musician. This week, we will be taking a look at Werner Herzog’s ‘Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans’. For the story behind the genesis of Canon Of Film, you can click here.
Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans (2009)
Director: Werner Herzog
Screenplay: William Finkelstein
If there ever was a better example of how to show the old adage true that it’s not what the film is about but rather, how it’s about it… Abel Ferrara’s 1992 masterpiece ‘Bad Lieutenant‘, took place on the streets of New York and starred Harvey Keitel as a “bad lieutenant”. He wasn’t even given a name in the film. He did every drug he could, he pulled over women to sexually harass them, he screwed hookers, and gambled large amounts of money. In between, he tries to solve a crime, haphazardly involving the rape of a local nun. I met...

Skinheads, hit men, cops, criminals, cops-posing-as-criminals, princes, junkies, executioners, politicians, supervillains, an 18th-century fop, a 19th-century impressionist painter and a 21st-century psychotic chimp – you name it, and there's an extremely good chance that Tim Roth has played it. The 56-year-old British actor has the sort of varied, overstuffed resumé that suggests a reserved spot in the steadily-working-character-actor canon, and has not one but two projects hitting TV screens at the moment: Tin Star, an Amazon thriller that about an expat cop living in Canada that starts as a quirky fish-out-of-water...

You still have a week before “Blade Runner 2049” arrives in theaters, which is nothing when you consider the fact that the original film was released a full 35 years ago. In between those two films came a 1997 computer game that allowed players to point and click their way through 2019 Los Angeles, though Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard doesn’t appear.
Taking his place is a detective named Ray McCoy in this “sidequel,” which was well received 20 years ago but has since been lost in time — not unlike tears in rain, you might say.

The story of three young Arab women navigating love and life in Tel Aviv has caused walkouts and won prizes
The freedom to love who you want or live how you like does not come, says Maysaloun Hamoud, without consequence. The Palestinian film-maker has caused a sensation with her debut feature In Between, the story of three young Arab women living together in Tel Aviv, by determinedly breaking the stereotype of what that reality is and what its consequences look like on screen.
Salma, Laila and Nour – the sullen lesbian DJ, the sexy criminal lawyer and the strait-laced hijabi student – might sound like the setup of a joke without a punchline, but theirs is a fresh, little-seen take on breaking rules and taking risks in the underground party scene of their city.

Edgar Wright chats to us about making Baby Driver, A Fistful Of Fingers, Bad Boys 3 and what he's up to next...
There’s a scene in Baby Driver, Edgar Wright’s hit crime film from this summer that’s just being released on home video now, where the eponymous Baby is warned by a more experienced criminal that everyone in their game eventually ends up with blood on their hands and that it doesn’t wash off so easily. Baby plays it cool. Later Baby is given some driving gloves that are white leather on one side and red leather on the other. And, later in the movie, when he thinks he’s clear of the game he takes the gloves off, removing the red from his palms, soon to discover that blood really doesn’t wash off quite so easily.

Chrissy Teigen was such a fan of Kermit the Frog when she was younger that she would’ve permanently immortalized the Muppets character on her body.
The model and cookbook author, 31, posed a question about tattoos to her 7.5 million fans and followers on Twitter Wednesday, revealing that she “thankfully” never went through with a Kermit body ink.
“What is a tattoo you wanted when you were younger but, thankfully, never got? mine is kermit,” Teigen tweeted.
The outspoken social media star received many submissions and later shared that singer Eve’s infamous paw prints on her chest tattoos also once crossed her mind.

With awards season approaching it’s time to get serious at the multiplex, at least for some actors that may be best known for rowdy raunchy comedies. That may be the case for Ben Stiller who’s playing this flick’s title character. Mind you, there’s still some funny stuff in this story, we’re not in heavy, somber tragedy territory at all. It’s just that Ben is playing an “everyman”. a fellow that many of us know, or “down deep” the person staring back at us from the mirror. Oddly, this man is constantly reflecting on his past, his regrets, and choices. These concerns and worries make up the bulk of Brad’S Status.
The title Brad is played by Mr. Stiller. Brad Sloan is sliding toward the big “5-0” and shares a home in Sacramento, CA with his lovely wife Melanie (Jenna Fisher) and their eighteen...

"I think the job of art is to raise questions and to put up a mirror for society" - Maysaloun Hamoud Photo: Anne Maniglier
It might seem like a modest subject for a film - three women sharing a flat, developing a strong friendship and helping each other to deal with life's challenges - but Maysaloun Hamoud's In Between has had a phenomenal impact on Palestinian society. Such has been the anger inspired by its frank portrayal of women's lives that a fatwa has been issued against the director. Maysaloun admits that it frightened her, but as far as the film was concerned, it gave it a massive publicity food. Now this thoughtful, intelligent drama is pulling in crowds not only at home but also overseas. It's about to open in UK cinemas. Maysaloun and I spoke on the phone about the impact is has had.
